Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique admitted that his side still had considerable room for improvement after they edged past Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday to set up a last-16 showdown against Barcelona or Chelsea. “We had the toughest draw in the league phase, and we are used to playing games like these against anyone,” the Spaniard said after Wednesday’s 2-2 draw in the all-French knockout phase play-off tie that allowed PSG to squeeze through 5-4 on aggregate. PSG led 3-2 from last week’s first leg but Maghnes Akliouche gave Monaco the advantage on the night at the Parc des Princes to level the scores on aggregate. The sending-off of Monaco’s Mamadou Coulibaly early in the second half paved the way for PSG to equalise through Marquinhos and then go 2-1 up in the second leg through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. But with a man fewer, the principality team still scored again through Jordan Teze and Wout Faes missed a glorious chance to force extra time. “Of course we can and want to improve, but there is also always an opponent and we knew how difficult it would be,” said Enrique. “The next one will be easier, no? Chelsea or Barca – not bad. But if any team is ready, it is us.” PSG lead Ligue 1 and remain in the running to retain the Champions League title they won for the first time last season. They have also won the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the French Champions Trophy in this campaign – all on penalties. There is a sense that the Qatar-owned club are a long way short of the form they showed in the second half of last season when they blew away their continental rivals on the way to thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final in Munich. “We knew how difficult it would be and we were not surprised by Monaco,” Enrique added. “We showed our resilience and our ability to overcome problems, but this competition is difficult. It is important to improve and that is what we will try to do.” He will also hope to get last year’s Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele back fully fit – the 28-year-old scored 35 goals last season but has just 11 this season and has started only 14 games out of 38. PSG will find out on Friday their path to this season’s final in Budapest, beyond the identity of their opponents in next month’s last 16. They beat Barcelona 2-1 away during the league phase in October and have faced the Catalans in five knockout ties since 2013. Paris also played Chelsea in knockout ties in three straight seasons from 2014 to 2016 and lost to the Blues 3-0 in last year’s Club World Cup final. Asked how his team can get back to the levels of last year, Enrique said: “Just keep doing the same things. We are ready to play any opponents in any competition. We have had a lot of injuries, but that is not an excuse. There are still more or less three months of the season to go and we have the same mentality. The objective is to win every competition.” Meanwhile, Monaco are left to focus on trying to qualify for Europe again next season after being knocked out in the Champions League play-offs for the second year running. “We could have done more in this campaign but it has still been satisfying,” said Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli, whose side are eighth in Ligue 1. “Let’s hope this experience helps us progress more quickly in the future.” 

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni said his team’s 2-1 win against Benfica on Wednesday to reach the Champions League last 16 was a victory for “everyone who is against racism”. The Frenchman was referring to the first leg of the play-off tie, which Madrid won 1-0 last week, which was marred by alleged racial abuse aimed at Vinicius Junior by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni. “We didn’t play our best match of the season, that’s for sure. But I think there are things more important than this match, and more important than football,” Tchouameni told reporters. Vinicius scored Madrid’s second goal at the Santiago Bernabeu and Tchouameni said the result was a “victory for everyone who is against racism”. Prestianni was provisionally suspended by UEFA for the game while the incident is under investigation and Benfica had an appeal against his ban rejected earlier Wednesday. “The dance continues,” wrote Vinicius on social media afterwards, along with a photo of a big banner hung at the Bernabeu reading “no to racism”. Real Madrid said they had thrown out one of their own supporters before the game for performing a Nazi salute. “This (club) member was identified by the club’s security staff moments after appearing on the (television) broadcast and was immediately expelled from the Santiago Bernabeu stadium,” said Madrid in a statement. “Real Madrid condemns this type of gesture and expression that incites violence and hatred in sports and society.” Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said he was happy when Vinicius found the net. “(I reacted) with joy obviously, for the great goal he scored, and because it was him, he deserves it,” said Arbeloa. “Without (Kylian) Mbappe I think it’s even more important and I am very happy for him.” Before the game Arbeloa said French superstar Mbappe would spent some time out as he recovers from a knee problem. “After yesterday’s session, we talked with the doctors, I spoke with him, and we felt the best thing was for him to stop, to recover 100 percent, and to come back in top shape, confident and without any discomfort for everything that’s coming, which is obviously very important,” Arbeloa told reporters after the match. Asked if it was discomfort or an injury, he added: “I think we can call it an injury, but it seems, and I hope, that it’s not a very serious injury, nothing major, and that he’ll be able to come back in a few days or weeks.”

Olympic, world and Commonwealth high jump champion Hamish Kerr of New Zealand will return to Qatar for the Doha Meeting – the opening meeting of the 2026 Diamond league series – on May 8.A proven championship performer, the 29-year-old national record holder has a best of 2.36m, a title-winning height he’s achieved on three occasions, first at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow (2024), followed by the Olympic Games in Paris (2024) and most recently, at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (2025).He finished second at the Doha Diamond League meeting in 2025 with 2.23m, but after a summer that included series wins in Rabat and Silesia, he went on to claim his first ever Diamond Trophy with 2.32m at the Diamond League final in Zurich.“The Doha crowd support was amazing last year and while I was happy enough with my result, I obviously wanted more from a performance perspective,” said Kerr, who is currently preparing for the New Zealand Championships – and a tilt at his tenth national title – next month.“It’s still early in the season so my training will be pretty heavy, but it’s about building momentum and confidence. I’ve always said you can chase easy or you can chase growth, and taking risks – even when it’s early season and it feels a bit scary – can be where you learn the most. That all said, nothing beats the feeling of jumping high and I hope I can give the crowd something to really cheer about this time around.”Kerr is the second major star announced for the Doha meeting, after pole vault world record holder Mondo Duplantis confirmed his attendance earlier last month. The Swedish pole vaulter will be hoping it’s third-time lucky the Qatar Sports Club.A two-time Olympic gold medallist, the dominant 26-year-old has been crowned world champion six times at senior level (three times outdoors, three times indoors), won a hattrick of senior European outdoor titles and won five successive Diamond league titles from 2021-2025 inclusive.He has broken the world record 14 times since 2020, most recently clearing a gravity-defying 6.30m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo where he successfully defended his global title.He is also unbeaten in this Doha Diamond League fixture, but it’s been far from plain sailing. The 2020 event was postponed due to the pandemic (he won the rescheduled competition with a best of 5.82m), while in 2022 the men’s pole vault was delayed by one day and moved indoors due to high winds. Duplantis cleared 6.02m for the win on that occasion – a mark that still stands as the meeting record.Meanwhile, the organisers of the Doha meet have already confirmed that athletes who set new meeting records at the 2026 event will be awarded a $5000 bonus, an innovative concept that was first introduced in 2025.The Diamond League series broke new ground in 2025 with $9.84mn awarded in prize money across the series as a whole, the largest prize pool in Diamond League history.While the introduction of meeting record bonus payments in Doha provided another welcome incentive for athletes, the high standard of past-performances meant that only Bahrain’s Olympic silver medallist Salwa Eid Naser came close. Her winning time of 49.83 in the women’s 400m matched the meeting record set by Allyson Felix of USA in 2008, but it wasn’t quick enough for the outright best required to meet the criteria for the $5000 bonus payment.The Doha Meeting is the opening meeting of the 2026 Diamond League. The series comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field across four different continents. It concludes with a single final across two days in Brussels on September 4 and 5

Paris Saint-Germain recovered from a shambolic start as Desire Doue inspired a comeback from two goals down to beat Monaco 3-2 in the principality in the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase play-off tie on Tuesday.United States star Folarin Balogun opened the scoring after just 55 seconds and found the net again on 18 minutes to put Monaco in control against their French Ligue 1 rivals at the Stade Louis II.Vitinha then missed a chance for the reigning European champions to reduce the deficit when he had a penalty saved and last year's Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele came off injured before the half-hour mark, but his replacement Doue sparked the comeback.He scored and then helped set up Achraf Hakimi for the equaliser just before the break, and Monaco then had Aleksandr Golovin sent off right at the start of the second half. Doue then got the winner on 67 minutes."He is an incredible player and a different player. I am very pleased for him because he deserved it," PSG coach Luis Enrique told broadcaster Canal Plus."There is pressure on us to win and we like that pressure, but there are difficult moments in games that are hard to overcome," he added.The result keeps the tie alive going into the return leg in Paris next Wednesday, but PSG are now strong favourites to seal a place in the last 16.They came into this game having been knocked off top spot in the French league last weekend following a defeat at Rennes, with Lens replacing them at the summit.However, they are a huge 20 points clear of Monaco, who find themselves languishing in eighth due to an inability to put together a consistent run of form.Nevertheless, Monaco notably held Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus at home during the league phase in Europe and also won 1-0 at home to PSG in Ligue 1 in November.Balogun double, Dembele injuryThis time they went in front as Balogun headed in from close range from a Golovin cross for the fastest goal ever conceded in a European tie by PSG.Monaco were in dreamland as they doubled their advantage when Balogun played a quick one-two with Maghnes Akliouche before running through to finish past goalkeeper Matfei Safonov.A shock result appeared on the cards, with PSG's title seemingly very much on the line, all the more so when Vitinha's penalty was saved by Philipp Koehn after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was brought down by Wout Faes.That was the fourth penalty out of their last five in the Champions League that PSG had failed to convert, and things got worse for them when Dembele - who had been a doubt pre-match and has had an injury-hit season - had to come off.Yet his withdrawal really turned out to be a blessing, as Doue entered the fray and had a devastating impact.The standout performer in PSG's 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in last season's final had been on the field barely two minutes when he controlled Bradley Barcola's pass in the box before smashing a left-foot shot low into the far corner.The leveller then came four minutes from the interval when a Doue shot was parried by Koehn, with Hakimi controlling the loose ball before applying the finish.Monaco's grip on the game was really gone within three minutes of the restart as Russian playmaker Golovin saw red following a VAR check for his challenge on Vitinha, granting PSG the extra man. The visitors took advantage as Warren Zaire-Emery laid the ball off for Doue to score his second of the night and make it 3-2 midway through the second half."I just did my job. We are pleased because the most important thing in games like these is just to win," Doue told Canal Plus.PSG will hope to finish off the tie next week, with the winners facing either Barcelona or Chelsea in the next round.It is a big ask now for Monaco, although they will likely be relieved to be heading to Paris with just a one-goal deficit after playing for so long with 10 men. 

Qatar participated in the celebration of the Arab Sustainability Day 2026, which was held Monday at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo, under the theme ‘path of sustainable development: a decade of achievements.’ Amna Abdulrahman al-Sulaiti attended the celebration, representing the Permanent Delegation of Qatar to the Arab League. The celebration was held with high-level participation from representatives of the Arab League’s member states, along with officials, experts, and representatives of civil society organisations. The celebration included a dialogue session on the contributions of civil society organisations to achieving sustainable development goals in Arab countries, in addition to honouring a number of Arab figures working in the fields of sustainable development. The Arab Sustainability Day, which falls on Feb 16 of each year, aims to raise awareness of sustainability concepts and the achievements of Arab countries and various stakeholders in achieving international goals for the well-being of Arab people, and to highlight the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their objectives and ways to create a supportive Arab climate for them. 

Al Sadd secured a place in the AFC Champions League Elite round of 16 despite a 4-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad Club at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium Tuesday.The big victory for Al Ittihad still allowed Al Sadd to claim the final last 16 spot from the West Zone, edging out fellow Qatari side Al Gharafa, who were eliminated after a 2-0 loss to Tractor FC.Qatar’s other representative, Al Duhail, also advanced to the last 16 following Tuesday’s outcomes. Al Duhail finished seventh in the West Zone with eight points, edging Al Sadd on goal difference.Al Sadd entered Tuesday’s match needing a win to advance, while Al Ittihad had already secured qualification.The Saudi side dominated early, testing goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham before breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute.Houssem Aouar pounced on a rebound to slot home, putting Al Sadd on the back foot. Eight minutes later, Youssef En-Nesyri doubled the lead, evading defenders and firing through Barsham’s legs.Pedro Miguel inadvertently added to Al Sadd’s woes with an own goal in the 33rd minute. Rafa Mujica pulled one back for Al Sadd before halftime, but Stephane Keller sealed Al Ittihad’s 4-1 victory in the 63rd minute.Despite the defeat, Al Sadd’s previous results and goal difference were sufficient to secure Round of 16 qualification, ensuring Qatar had two representatives advancing to the knockout stage."We are happy to qualify. Two months ago, the team was almost out of the tournament, and now we have made it. We will reassess and prepare for what comes next. Saudi clubs are currently the strongest in the AFC Champions League, which is natural," Al Sadd coach Roberto Mancini.On defeat to Al Ittihad, he added: "We were not happy with the result, but the team overcame the early difficulties and secured qualification despite a tough match against a strong opponent."Al Gharafa SC’s campaign, however, ended in disappointment in 10th place with six points. Facing Tractor FC at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium, the Cheetahs needed a win to keep their hopes alive but were controlled by the Iranian side for much of the match.Tractor broke the deadlock in the 61st minute after Al Gharafa failed to clear a rebound, with Mahdi Hashemnezhad finishing clinically. The visitors then doubled their advantage in the 81st minute through Amirhossein Hosseinzadeh, leaving Al Gharafa unable to respond and confirming their exit from the competition. 

After six thrilling rounds filled with intense competition and high-speed action, the 2026 Arabian Drag Racing League concluded in spectacular fashion at the drag strip of Qatar Racing Club (QRC).The event was held under the patronage of QRC Chairman His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al-Thani. The fight for season titles intensified across all ten categories, with several championships decided in the final races and sealed at the finish line, closing one of the most successful seasons in the championship’s history.In the INDEX 9.0 category, Abdul Latif Abdul Latif claimed his second win of the season, having previously won Round 2, after defeating Rumaith al-Rumaith, who secured second place. With consistent results across the six rounds, Suleiman al-Sanousi was crowned season champion, having won Rounds 1 and 4 and finished runner-up in Round 2.The INDEX 8.50 category once again delivered a new round winner, with no driver claiming two victories this season. The final round produced a fresh podium lineup, as Hamdan al-Kaabi secured first place, followed by Nawaf Mohammed al-Ansari in second and Rakan al-Saqran in third. Despite the fierce competition, Yousuf al-Faraj emerged as the overall season champion in the category.The INDEX 4.00 category witnessed strong competition, with Rashid al-Balushi earning his second victory of the season after also winning the opening round. Thanks to podium finishes in all six rounds, Al-Balushi was crowned season champion in this class.Shawn Langdon claimed victory in both the INDEX 4.50 and INDEX 4.80 categories during the sixth round. In the INDEX 4.50 final, he defeated Ali al-Qattan, and in the INDEX 4.80 final, Langdon overcame Sheikh Jabor bin Hassan. Langdon also secured the season title in INDEX 4.80 after winning three rounds, while Saeed al-Balushi was crowned season champion in INDEX 4.50.The fiercest contest in the car categories came in Super Street Pro, where Yousuf al-Ali and Jaber al-Maghribi met in the final for the fifth time this season, with the title on the line.Al-Ali entered with four wins from four podiums, aiming for a fifth triumph, while al-Maghribi had five podium finishes, including one earlier victory. In the decisive showdown, al-Maghribi delivered when it mattered most, claiming his second win of the season and sealing the championship title.In the Super Street Outlaw category, the situation was slightly different. Mustafa Atat had already secured the season title at the end of the previous round, regardless of the final round results. The sixth-round title went to Turki al-Dhafiri, who defeated Ahmed Afsisi in the final.In the premier Pro Bike final, Mohammed al-Awad defeated Christopher Garner to clinch the season title, denying Mishaal Al-Saber any chance of overtaking him. Garner placed second, with Bradley McCoy third.In Super Street Bike, Mohammed Bourashed beat Mishari al-Turki to secure both the sixth-round win and the overall championship, while Badr bin Eidan finished third. Meanwhile, Mustafa Mahmoud confirmed his dominance in Street Bike, claiming a fifth straight victory in the final round ahead of Abdullah Abdul Rahim and Ahmed Karam to seal the season crown. At the conclusion of the event, participating clubs presented commemorative shields to His Excellency Sheikh Khalid and QRC Director General Sheikh Jabor bin Khalid al-Thani. The Director General then honored the media representatives, followed by the awarding ceremony for the top three finishers in each category and the crowning of the 2026 season champions.
