Pakistan's central bank holds key rate at 11.5%

Pakistan's central bank kept its key interest rate unchanged at 11.5% for a third straight meeting on Monday, as a sharp pickup in inflation and lingering risks from the Middle East conflict kept policymakers on hold.The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has held the rate steady since raising it by 100 basis points in April, its first increase in nearly three years, after a surprise 50 bps cut in December 2025, and holds in January and March.Eight of nine analysts surveyed by Reuters last week expected SBP to maintain the rate at 11.5%, while one had forecast a 50 bps increase to 12%.Headline inflation jumped to 11.15% year-on-year in August from 9.2% in July, more than tripling from 3.1% a year earlier and moving further above the SBP's 5%-7% medium-term target.Renewed US-Iran hostilities and the risk of disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have kept oil prices elevated, adding to import costs in energy-dependent Pakistan.The South Asian country remains under a $7bn, 37-month IMF Extended Fund Facility, together with a $1.4bn Resilience and Sustainability Facility, with a Fund mission due to conduct reviews for a fourth tranche.

Global banks coalesce around Fed hike call after inflation surprises

A growing number of brokerages expect the Federal Reserve to raise rates this week after stronger-than-expected inflation readings raised doubts that price pressures would ease without further tightening. Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, HSBC and Deutsche Bank forecast a quarter-point hike at the Fed's September 15-16 meeting, with several expecting rates to stay higher for longer to bring inflation back to its 2% target. The shift follows data showing US consumer and producer prices rose more than expected in August, while oil prices climbed above $100 a barrel amid renewed hostilities in the Middle East, raising concerns that inflation pressures could remain elevated. The growing hawkishness marks a sharp turnaround from earlier this year, when many economists expected the Fed to remain on hold after keeping rates unchanged throughout 2026 following a quarter-point cut in December 2025. "Lack of inflation progress has tipped the balance," HSBC economist Ryan Wang said in a note, backing a September rate hike. JP Morgan struck a similarly hawkish tone following the inflation reports. "The week that saw rising bond yields and energy prices and a firm enough set of inflation readings to make a rate hike at next week's FOMC meeting more likely than not," JP Morgan economists led by Michael Feroli said in a note. The outlook for further Fed tightening will be in focus this week as policymakers conclude their meeting on Wednesday, while investors also watch the Bank of Japan for policy signals. JP Morgan said the latest inflation data cast doubt on a sustained disinflation trend, leading it to forecast another Fed rate hike this year and raise its estimate of the long-run policy rate to 3.25%. Markets are pricing in about 90% chance of a quarter-point Fed rate hike this month, up from about 70% before the latest inflation data, with another increase expected in December, according to CME's FedWatch Tool. In a separate note on Sunday, Goldman Sachs said it still expects two Fed rate cuts in 2027, though later than previously forecast, as it sees this week's expected hike as driven more by market pricing than inflation fundamentals.

ECB lifts borrowing costs amid energy shock, opens door for more hikes

The European Central Bank raised interest rates on Thursday for the second time this year as renewed Middle East fighting fans fears of higher inflation, and opened the door for further hikes.As widely anticipated, the central bank for the 21 eurozone nations lifted its benchmark rate a quarter percentage point to 2.5%, its highest level since March last year.It was the ECB's second increase this year after policymakers lifted borrowing costs in June for the first time since 2023 in response to the energy shock triggered by the US war on Iran.With renewed energy price rises set to push eurozone inflation even higher, President Christine Lagarde told a press conference that the unanimous decision by the ECB's governing council had been a "no-brainer"."The conflict in the Middle East continues to generate inflation pressures, and inflation is set to remain well above target for an extended period," she said in Berlin, where rate-setters were meeting on one of their trips away from the ECB's Frankfurt headquarters.Markets are pencilling in further hikes but Lagarde, as usual, declined to give clear guidance, saying the outlook was too unclear to plot a path ahead.But the ECB hiked its growth forecasts for this year to 0.9% and for next year to 1.4%, underlining that the eurozone economy has withstood the Middle East war energy shock better than feared.Lagarde said the near-term economic outlook had "improved", adding: "We have been surprised by the resilience of our economy."The central bank also raised its inflation projections for 2027 and 2028, while maintaining this year's at 3%.Analysts said Lagarde had struck a "hawkish" tone — tilting in favour of further hikes — opening the door for potential further tightening."The communications from the ECB can be read as at least having a hawkish tilt," said Roman Ziruk, FX Strategist at Ebury.Lagarde "signalled that inflation is proving more persistent than expected (and) talked up the resilience of the eurozone economy," Ziruk said.Fears of higher inflation are being fanned by rising global energy prices.The Brent international oil benchmark has climbed back above $100 a barrel this week, while natural gas prices, a key energy cost for Europe, reached their highest level in more than three years.The surge is being driven by an escalation in the US-Iran conflict as well as a flare-up in fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemeni rebels, dimming prospects of Gulf energy shipments returning to normal.But for households in the euro area, another rate hike means pricier mortgages, consumer credit and other loans.The central bank has faced criticism in some quarters for trying to tackle an energy supply shock with tighter monetary policy.Rate hikes aim to slow inflation by dampening demand from consumers and businesses, but critics say they can do little to tackle the root cause of the current burst in price rises — a shortage of energy.So far there has been little sign of eurozone inflation seeping more broadly through to the economy via higher costs for food, goods or services.Some economists say the ECB is worried about a repeat of 2022, when the central bank was criticised for raising rates too slowly in response to the inflation surge following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.Lagarde also faced questions about her own future after recent media speculation that she could step down as ECB president before the end of her term in October, 2027 and take over the presidency of the World Economic Forum.But she refused to be drawn on the topic, telling journalists: "When there is something to report about me personally, you'll be the first one to know... and there is nothing to report."
