 The Metrash App has become one of Qatar’s most widely used government service platforms, with over 10mn services annually and more than 2.8mn active users, an official at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said. “Launched in 2011, Metrash has grown into one of Qatar’s most widely used government service platforms, with more than 2.8mn active users accessing more than 500 services,” Captain Ali Ahmed Syed, head of MoI’s Internet and Electronic Services Section at the Systems Development Department, said yesterday. “On an annual basis, Metrash is used for processing more than 10mn services and can be accessed in six languages.”  He was addressing the participants of a webinar organised by the MoI on the topic “E-Services of the Ministry of Interior through Metrash App”.“The Metrash platform has undergone a major overhaul, with a redesigned interface, streamlined procedures and a wider range of electronic services aimed at making government transactions faster and easier for residents, citizens, companies and visitors,” Capt Syed said.The latest upgrade reflects advances in smart application technology, improving accessibility and simplifying procedures.“The Metrash application has been comprehensively redesigned to reflect the latest advancements in digital technology, offering a streamlined, intuitive and accessible user experience across all smart mobile devices,” he said.  The revamp includes a new interface, re-engineered services, revised classification of government transactions, and the introduction of new services.Services have been grouped by nature and frequency of use, allowing users to access several related transactions through a single icon.Traffic-related services, for instance, have been consolidated to make procedures easier to navigate, while new categories cover security, traffic, personal files, delegations, Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) citizens, visa enquiries, notifications, certificates and payments.  Among the new services is a facility that lets users pay traffic violations for friends or family members.Capt Syed highlighted the platform’s importance in reducing the need for individuals and company representatives to visit MoI service centres.“Many services relating to traffic, passports and immigration can now be submitted electronically through Metrash or the Ministry of Interior website, with applicants able to follow the progress of their transactions online,” he said. “Users who choose delivery through Qatar Post can also track the status of their documents, including whether a document has been printed and when it is expected to reach them.”  The upgraded Metrash platform provides users with access to a wide range of personal information and documents.These include the ID card, driving licence, vehicle information, military driving licence and details of companies registered under a user’s name.The application provides enquiry services covering sponsored persons, travel movements, travel bans, police clearance certificates and other information.Residence permit services have also been organised into dedicated categories.  Users can renew or cancel residence permits, complete required approvals, pay residence permit fines, follow applications and reissue previous permits.Capt Syed explained that residence permit renewal, one of the most-used Metrash services, can be completed in a few steps.“Users can select the residence permit procedures, choose the people whose permits are to be renewed, specify the renewal period and make the payment,” he said.“The renewed ID card can then be delivered through Qatar Post,” Capt Syed continued. “The platform also enables users to follow up applications for lost or damaged documents, update personal photographs, change passport details and submit applications relating to name changes.”  “Visa-related services have similarly been brought together under dedicated categories covering application submission, visa procedures, application follow-up and medical check-up procedures for recruitment from outside of Qatar,” he added.

Qatar remains committed to advancing its long-term economic expansion plans, including a new energy project that will double liquefied natural gas production capacity to 145mn tonnes per year by 2030 despite the damage sustained by facilities.The commitment was highlighted Sunday during an interview featuring Qatar Central Bank Governor His Excellency Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani with Bloomberg TV on the sidelines of the Special Edition of the Qatar Economic Forum 2026, Powered by Bloomberg, convened in New York alongside the UN General Assembly.“The non-hydrocarbon sector grew by 3.5% despite regional challenges, while the State of Qatar successfully reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio from 60% to 40%, while maintaining a sovereign credit rating of AA,” noted Sheikh Bandar, who is also chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA).He said the contribution of the non-hydrocarbon sector to GDP increased from 40% in 2011 to approximately 70% in recent years, supported by the accumulation of fiscal surpluses over the past years, as well as the establishment of reserves and funds that provide the economy with greater resilience in addressing the challenges.According to Sheikh Bandar, Qatar enjoys a strong external financial position and substantial reserves held by the central bank, alongside operating one of the largest sovereign wealth funds globally.These financial strengths enhance the country's ability to navigate challenges and capitalise on growth opportunities as regional conditions improve, he pointed out.“The Qatar Investment Authority is pursuing a long-term investment strategy aimed at creating sustainable value for future generations, with an increasing focus on technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation, particularly in the US, while continuing to invest across a range of sectors in support of its broader diversification strategy,” he said.Meanwhile, the QCB is implementing 18 artificial intelligence projects, four of which have been completed, Sheikh Bandar noted.“These projects have contributed to reducing costs and accelerating workflows, while the QCB remains committed to continued investment in this technology and to leveraging its potential to further develop and enhance its operations,” he said.Sheikh Bandar added that the central bank remains committed to continued investment in technology to enhance its overall operations.

The Qatari-Saudi Joint Business Council convened Sunday, co-chaired by Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani and Hamad bin Ali al-Shuwaier, chairman of the Saudi side.Discussions focused on key economic and commercial issues aimed at accelerating economic integration between the two countries. Key areas included increasing bilateral trade, facilitating cross-border business establishment, promoting mutual investments, and reinforcing the private sector’s pivotal role in advancing economic integration.The meeting was also attended by Qatar Chamber first vice-chairman Mohamed bin Towar al-Kuwari, second vice-chairman Rashid bin Hamad al-Athba, who is also vice-chairman of the Joint Business Council’s Qatari side, along with council members from both sides.The council also discussed local government investment initiatives under public-private partnerships (PPP) offered by both governments to the private sector, identifying priority sectors for investment, exploring frameworks for cooperation on international projects, and establishing a fast-track mechanism to address challenges facing Qatari and Saudi investors.Both sides affirmed their commitment to developing mechanisms for trade and investment cooperation in a manner that contributes to advancing development and prosperity in the two brotherly countries.Sheikh Khalifa emphasised that the shared heritage and deep-rooted ties between Qatar and Saudi Arabia provide a strong foundation for strategic and sustainable partnerships that serve the interests of both countries.He noted that both countries share close historical, geographical and social ties, as well as common aspirations for a secure, stable, and prosperous future. He noted that Qatar National Vision 2030 and Saudi Vision 2030 offer broad opportunities to expand cooperation in economic diversification and investment.Sheikh Khalifa said the meeting comes at a critical time marked by rapid regional and global developments, highlighting the need for closer coordination, economic readiness and resilience to ensure business continuity, safeguard supply chains, and address emerging challenges.He said the meeting builds on a series of previous meetings held in Qatar and Saudi Arabia aimed at advancing partnerships between companies, exchanging expertise, addressing challenges facing trade and investment, and facilitating the movement of goods and services.Furthermore, Sheikh Khalifa highlighted opportunities for Qatari and Saudi companies arising from Saudi Arabia’s major projects, including Expo 2030 Riyadh and the 2034 FIFA World Cup, particularly in construction, supply chains, services, tourism, transport, and technology.He also underscored the private sector’s key role in advancing development and economic integration, stressing the importance of greater cooperation and shared responsibility. Sheikh Khalifa expressed hope that the discussions would lead to practical initiatives that strengthen business partnerships and contribute to a more secure, stable and prosperous future for both countries.Al-Shuwaier said since its establishment, the Joint Business Council has developed a strategy aligned with the directives of the leaderships of the two countries, implementing innovative initiatives that have yielded tangible economic results.Highlighting the council’s major achievements, he pointed out that bilateral trade has tripled compared to its 2022 level. Qatari investments in Saudi Arabia have reached around SAR12bn, while Saudi investments in Qatar have reached SAR6bn. He also noted the signing of more than 10 joint agreements and efforts that helped resolve 80% of the identified challenges affecting trade and investment growth.He stressed the important role of business leaders in the next phase, particularly as both governments seek to empower the private sector to lead sustainable economic development, calling for a new strategy in which business leaders and their institutions play a greater role in shaping and implementing joint initiatives.At the conclusion of the meeting, Sheikh Khalifa and al-Shuwaier witnessed the signing of five business agreements between Qatari and Saudi companies spanning diverse economic sectors, including furniture, medical supplies, real estate brokerage, advertising and promotion, exhibitions, and international investment.

Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has hailed three Qatar Charity (QC)-sponsored Somali orphans after they swept the top three places in the international “Rofaqa” category of the Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani Qur’an Competition.He also praised the QC’s longstanding support for orphan care and education in Somalia.The event, held recently in Qatar, drew hundreds of orphaned contestants from around the world.The prime minister made the remarks while receiving the winners at his office in Mogadishu.Competing in the full Qur'an memorisation category, Abdulghani Abdulqadir Sheikh Hussein claimed first place, Abdulrahman Qasim Mohammed took second, and Abdulrahman Ahmed Mahmoud secured third.Barre commended Qatar Charity for combining orphan care with education and empowerment, helping young people excel academically and in Qur'anic studies.He said the students’ success underscores the respected status of Qur'an memorisers in Somali society and highlights the country’s promising talent in Islamic and Qur'anic studies.Describing the clean sweep as “a source of pride for the Somali people”, the prime minister urged the winners to continue memorising and teaching the Qur'an and promoting its values in their communities.He also announced that the three winners would receive free education under the same support granted to the country’s top performers in the national secondary school certificate examinations.He told them: “The government is proud of you for winning first, second, and third places in this international competition. Your achievement is an honour for all Somalis, and I will direct the ministry of education to provide you with free education in support of your academic journey.”The winners were among 389 contestants from 20 countries who entered the international “Rofaqa” competition for orphans, organised by the QC in partnership with Qatar’s Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs.A select group advanced to the final round.The “Rofaqa” category is the Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani Qur'an Competition’s first international category dedicated to orphans sponsored by Qatar Charity.Open to participants aged 12-20, it offers a competitive Qur'an memorisation platform within an educational setting that combines Qur'anic excellence with humanitarian care.Somalia’s ambassador to Qatar Dr Mohammed Ahmed Sheikh Ali also congratulated the winners, saying that their clean sweep reflected the value of investing in people.He said the result showed how sustained care, education, and training can turn talent into achievement.

Gulf supply chains have demonstrated strong operational agility through re-routing and improvisation during geopolitical shocks, yet critical structural vulnerabilities persist across the region, according to an industry expert. Speaking on the impact of the ongoing conflict, Dr Iman Adeinat, an expert in logistics and supply chain management at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), explained that the fundamental exposures evident six months ago remain unresolved despite successful operational workarounds. Dr Adeinat noted that while essential commodities continue to reach Qatari markets through alternative routes, the core structural dependency on the Strait of Hormuz presents an enduring challenge for the energy sector. “The agility was real. Within days of the February closure, goods moved overland through Saudi Arabia, transshipped through Red Sea and Omani ports, and drew on Qatar’s reserves. Even now, half a year on, essential goods still reach Qatari shelves. “The structural vulnerability is equally real and has not gone away. A fifth of the world’s oil and gas, and effectively all of Qatar’s LNG, still depends on a single channel that remains largely closed. No amount of agility manufactures a second Strait of Hormuz. That is the exposure the war laid bare, and it persists,” Dr Adeinat told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview. Dr Adeinat stressed that trade flows have split significantly, with import logistics maintaining stability while energy exports bear the brunt of the maritime closure. “Exports and imports have behaved completely differently and conflating them has been the main source of public anxiety. Six months on, that divergence is starker than ever,” she noted. Regarding the export environment, infrastructure damage alongside restricted vessel movement has severely affected gas shipments out of the country. “On exports, the damage is severe and ongoing. Iranian strikes on Ras Laffan in March destroyed two production trains, taking roughly 17% of Qatar’s LNG capacity offline for what QatarEnergy says could be three to five years. “Worse, the brief June reopening that let a few cargoes out has reversed: since the July breakdown, Qatar has again been largely unable to move LNG at anything near its normal three-shipments-a-day rhythm. This is now the longest sustained interruption to Qatari gas exports in the country’s history,” Dr Adeinat pointed out. In contrast, consumer supply lines have avoided significant shortages owing to earlier infrastructure investments and strategic coordination with regional logistics hubs. “On imports, the picture remains far more reassuring, and that contrast is the story worth telling. Qatar imports most of its food, yet after six months availability has held, because reserves were reinforced early and multi-route sourcing through Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea has been sustained,” she explained. Dr Adeinat noted that long-term strategic initiatives, including port expansions and agricultural self-sufficiency programmes established over the past decade, provided the baseline security necessary to withstand current pressures. “Qatar’s most important diversification step was taken almost a decade ago, and that is the key to understanding why it has coped for six months. Within the last eight years, Qatar expanded Hamad Port, built domestic dairy and agriculture almost from scratch, diversified suppliers, and institutionalised food security as national policy. The systems performing under sustained pressure today are the ones built then,” she stressed. She emphasised that land transport links through Saudi Arabia and Red Sea ports have emerged as key logistical substitutes for containerised cargo during the maritime blockage. “What is new in this conflict is the overland dimension. With the sea contested, Qatar leaned on road corridors through Saudi Arabia and the kingdom’s Red Sea logistics services, and those have become a durable part of the toolkit,” she said. However, Dr Adeinat stated that overland routes cannot replace maritime channels for bulk energy logistics, reinforcing the necessity of maintaining open international maritime corridors. “Qatar has diversified how it feeds its people. It cannot, yet diversify how it sells its gas, which is why the prolonged closure has hit exports so much harder than imports, and why a secure strait remains a global interest, not just a Qatari one,” Dr Adeinat added.
