There was a time when Mutaz Essa Barshim chased heights. Now, as the curtain slowly begins to fall on one of athletics' greatest careers, he is chasing something far more enduring - legacy. On the eve of Friday’s Doha Diamond League at Qatar Sports Club, the four-time Olympic high jump medallist and three-time world champion spoke not about medals or metres, but about ensuring that when he finally walks away from the runway, his name remains inseparable from the sport he transformed. "I want to create a legacy. I want to separate myself from the pack. I want whenever I leave this sport, it won't be like I've done something - you cannot mention high jump without mentioning my name," Barshim said on Thursday, with the same effortless elegance that has long defined his high jump run-up. For the Qatari icon, who turns 35 on June 24, Friday's competition is another step in what he openly described as "the final lap" of his extraordinary journey. "I feel like I'm definitely on the final lap of my career. Just to make sure that cherry on top, it's tasty and shiny. The message now is legacy," he said. Those words carry even greater significance after two injury-ravaged seasons that threatened to bring his legendary career to a premature end. Since claiming bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Barshim has battled recurring physical setbacks, limiting him to just two low-key competitions this year before returning to the global spotlight at the Doha Diamond League. Yet, after months of rehabilitation, the most decorated athlete in Qatar's history is simply grateful to be back doing what he loves. "I'm happy to be back. It's been a long time since my last jump at 2.41m or something. Unfortunately, I was injured and couldn't do what I wanted for the last few seasons. But now I feel good, I feel healthy, and I just need to go out and do what I know best - jumping," Barshim said. **media[459088]** The uncertainty surrounding his form only adds to the intrigue. "When you compete, you kind of know where you are. Here, I have no idea, and I kind of missed that feeling. It's just going out there. It's still on the track and a lot of fun," he said. Barshim has spent nearly two decades redefining excellence in the high jump. An Olympic champion after his unforgettable shared gold with Gianmarco Tamberi in Tokyo and the only man to win three world titles in the event, he has little left to prove. He knows it too. "At the moment, it doesn't really matter. I've done so much. I can just step off the field," he said matter-of-factly. But the fierce competitor inside him still demands one final challenge. Reflecting on his motivation during a lonely training session last week, Barshim admitted he questioned why he should keep pushing after conquering virtually everything the sport has to offer. "I was alone and I was like, what's the reason? I've done that, won this, won that. What's the reason for me to step out today?" he recalled. Then he found his answer. "I was reading somewhere somebody said I'm that close to becoming the greatest, some historic mark as a high jumper. For me, that's the reason. That's why I'm here today. I'm going to make sure when I leave this high jump, when I leave track and field, it's going to be so difficult for the next person to come close to my legacy," Barshim said. Statistics, he admits with a smile, are among the few things capable of reigniting his competitive fire. "I like to read stuff that is statistical. People try to compare this and that. That's kind of triggering," he said. Home has often brought out the very best in Barshim, none more memorable than his emotional world title defence in Doha in 2019 after returning from a serious ankle injury. "If you've seen 2019, coming back from a very serious injury and being able to defend my title in front of my home crowd, it just shows you how much pure support can do. I need a little bit of blast for tomorrow," he said. Friday's competition will be without Olympic and world champion Hamish Kerr after the New Zealander withdrew from the event. Reigning world indoor champion Oleh Doroshchuk, world bronze medallist Jan Stefela and a strong international field will feature, but for many inside Qatar Sports Club the spotlight will remain fixed on Qatar's greatest sporting hero. Every appearance now carries the possibility that it could be his last. Asked whether next year's World Championships in Beijing could mark his farewell, Barshim refused to commit. "Maybe. Nowadays every competition I take as my last. I'll make sure I'm doing my best and I'll make sure I enjoy it as well," said Barshim, who also left the door open to competing at 2026 Asian Games in Japan, which will be held from September 19 to October 4. He recalled how he fought until the very last moment to compete at last year's World Championships in Tokyo despite unbearable pain before eventually pulling out.  "Many doctors told me it was impossible. But again, that mindset - yes, it's possible. I was with the team until the last day before jumping. In the end it wasn't possible. It was terrible pain. But I'm happy because it was about giving 110 percent. I didn't give up,” he said. "I guess, if it wasn't meant to be, it doesn't matter, because I put my effort. There is the World Championships in Beijing next year. Maybe, maybe I can compete in one more." Barshim turns 35 next week, yet his ambitions remain remarkably unchanged. "The same objective. I want to be there. I want to perform. I want to create a legacy," said the legend as signed off.

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra’s (QPO) CineMoon Ensemble brought audiences into the colourful world of animation with a concert programme that combined beloved cartoon characters and classical music at the Qatar National Library. Every musical phrase, cue and movement was carefully synchronised with the animated films projected on screen, creating a multisensory experience in which the music and visuals unfolded together. From the mischievous antics of Tom and Jerry to the unmistakable stride of the Pink Panther, audiences witnessed cartoons come to life through live performance, with each note precisely aligned to the action on screen. The concert marked the second edition of CineMoon Ensemble’s animation-focused programme, the first one was during their 10th anniversary three years ago. While the inaugural edition combined Charlie Chaplin clips, films from the black-and-white era and cartoons, and was presented in several countries, including Turkiye and Italy, the latest production was dedicated entirely to animation. “The world has changed, yet the timeless world of animation continues to endure. Animation is not solely for children—it is a meaningful part of who we are, preserving our childhood experiences, memories, and imagination,” Merve Kenet Bulun, founder and artistic director of CineMoon Ensemble, said. “At CineMoon Ensemble, we have always been inspired by the great musicians and artists who brought joy and beauty into the world despite its challenges. Through their creativity, they created moments of wonder, poetry, and inspiration, reminding us that imagination remains one of the most powerful ways to connect with one another,” she added. About the inspiration behind the programme, Bulun said that it “came a long time ago, when I first encountered the work of Emanuele Luzzati. His world of illustration had a kind of simple, almost poor magic—created through colour, imagination, and his unique visual language. I was especially fascinated by the way he translated classical music, particularly Gioachino Rossini, into images. His universe of colours and imagination stayed with me ever since.” The programme featured a selection of classical and popular works paired with animated films, including Gioachino Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie and Cat Duett accompanied by cartoons by renowned Italian artist Emanuele Luzzati; Johann Strauss II’s I Can’t Stop Conducting from Tom and Jerry; Leroy Anderson’s The Waltzing Cat; Louis Jordan’s Is You or Is You Ain’t My Baby; and Henry Mancini’s The Pink Panther. The production was conceived by Bulun and conducted by Giovanni Pasini, with specially created visual content by Suleyman Hakan Bulun. Moreover, it is notable that there’s a good dynamic between the musicians and the audience during the Wednesday concert, Bulun said “what makes this experience so special is the sincere and interactive atmosphere it creates, allowing the audience to feel closer and truly connected with us.” Adding to the atmosphere, the performance extended beyond the stage. During the concert, the Pink Panther character moved through the audience alongside Maestro Pasini, greeting guests and creating moments of interaction that were well received by children and adults. Bulun noted that presenting the performance at QNL highlighted the programme’s educational dimension. “Libraries are another world of imagination, wisdom, and human history—and for us, the perfect place to connect more closely with our audience. The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra is not only a musical institution; as part of Qatar Foundation, we also carry a responsibility for music education. Science shows that music helps children think more creatively, develop broader perspectives, improve concentration, and become more engaged learners. In this sense, the library is a perfect match for us.” The concert, which was a full house, featured vocalists Anna Dieterich and Maria Klimenko, alongside Matteo Gaspari, who performed as a double bass soloist and vocalist. The ensemble was led by co-founder and concertmaster Lorena Manescu and featured musicians from the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra across strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Following strong audience demand and a lengthy waiting list, CineMoon Ensemble is considering opportunities to present the production again. The ensemble’s next community engagement performance will take place on June 26 at Mall of Qatar. The free programme will feature well-known music from film and television, audience sing-alongs and performances by additional QPO ensembles, offering a day of music for audiences of all ages.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) signed a cooperation program with ExxonMobil Research Qatar Ltd. to study biodiversity and prepare seabed maps in the northwestern areas of the State of Qatar, as part of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides in 2023.In the presence of HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, the program was signed on behalf of the MOECC by Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves Affairs Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Maslamani, and on behalf of ExxonMobil Research Qatar Ltd. by Director of Research and Vice President Dr. Easa Al Musleh.The cooperation aims to study and classify marine biodiversity in the northwestern areas of the State of Qatar using environmental DNA technology, and to prepare accurate seabed maps, in support of efforts to protect marine ecosystems and employ modern technologies in monitoring and studying environmentally significant areas in the country.The program includes conducting field surveys, collecting environmental samples, using remote sensing techniques and high-resolution satellite imagery, benefiting from bathymetric data using LiDAR technology, in addition to conducting a temporal analysis of environmental changes in the region.MOECC, represented by the Department of Environmental Monitoring and Inspection, is also cooperating in conducting a preliminary environmental survey prior to the start of the project, to assess seawater quality and seabed sediment quality, with the results of this survey to be used as a baseline for the project.In this context, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Maslamani confirmed that the cooperation program with ExxonMobil Research Qatar Ltd. comes within the framework of the Ministry's efforts to protect marine ecosystems and support specialized scientific studies that contribute to understanding the components of biodiversity in marine environments in the State of Qatar.Al Maslamani explained that the northwestern areas of the country represent a site of high environmental importance, making their study and the preparation of accurate seabed maps an important step to support environmental monitoring work and provide scientific data that contributes to the protection and sustainable management of marine habitats.He pointed out that the use of environmental DNA technology in studying and classifying marine biodiversity represents a qualitative addition to research and monitoring tools, due to its ability to detect species and biological indicators through environmental samples, thereby enhancing data accuracy and supporting environmental decision-making.For his part, Director of Research and Vice President of ExxonMobil Research Qatar Ltd. Dr. Easa Al Musleh confirmed that the program reflects the ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in the field of environmental studies and scientific research, noting the company's keenness to employ modern technologies and research expertise to support national efforts in marine environmental protection.Al Musleh added that the project will contribute to providing specialized scientific outputs, including a scientific report on biodiversity containing results of environmental DNA analysis and diversity indicators, precise digital seabed maps and geographic information system data, in addition to a report on the environmental status of the region and a brief awareness booklet in Arabic and English.In a related context, MOECC and the ExxonMobil Research Center Qatar announced the completion and delivery of a research project on mangrove trees in the State of Qatar, which resulted in identifying several suitable coastal sites for their cultivation, as part of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two sides in 2023.The project was based on an integrated scientific methodology combining data analysis, field studies, and advanced modeling techniques, aiming to assess the Qatari coasts and identify the most suitable locations for mangrove growth, in support of environmental planning and coastal ecosystem protection and rehabilitation programs.The results of the project showed that the areas suitable for mangrove growth exceed their current distribution range, with Al Reem Reserve identified as a high-priority area, while Al Dhakhira and Al Zubarah were classified as medium-priority sites.The two sides had signed the memorandum of understanding in 2023 to enhance cooperation in the fields of scientific research and technology, provide technical advice, offer training and exchange expertise opportunities, and implement research projects that support efforts to protect ecosystems in the State of Qatar.

The State of Qatar reaffirmed the importance of enhancing women's participation in peace and security efforts, stressing that women are a fundamental pillar in achieving sustainable peace and building more stable and prosperous societies.This came in a statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani during the open debate of the United Nations Security Council on Women, Peace and Security, held in New York under the theme: "Peace is decided with women: Emerging from conflict by enhancing their participation."Her Excellency noted that ongoing wars and conflicts have profound repercussions for women and girls, as they are among the groups most affected by the consequences of crises. She stressed that this reality necessitates concerted international efforts to strengthen the role and status of women as key partners in achieving peace and security.She further pointed out that the international community cannot overlook the catastrophic humanitarian conditions faced by women in conflict zones, including in the occupied Palestinian territories, as a result of violations committed under the Israeli occupation. These conditions, she said, place Palestinian women and girls at risk and contribute to the deterioration of education, healthcare, and other essential services.In this regard, she referred to the latest report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Women, Peace and Security, which noted that grave violations committed against women and girls, including in the occupied Palestinian territories, provide stark examples of the serious dangers faced by women in crisis-affected environments.Her Excellency stressed that recent developments in the Gulf region have underscored the importance of preserving regional security and stability, given their direct impact on communities, including women and girls. She emphasized the need to continue efforts aimed at promoting dialogue and diplomacy, upholding international law, and resolving disputes through peaceful means, thereby fostering a safer and more stable environment that supports development, ensures the continuity of essential services, and empowers women and girls.She reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to continuing its intensive efforts and support for good offices initiatives aimed at strengthening regional security and stability in a manner that serves the interests of the peoples of the region and the world, including women and girls.In this context, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations reiterated Qatar's welcome of the agreement on a memorandum of understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran to address outstanding issues between them, including ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, considering this agreement an important step toward consolidating sustainable peace and promoting economic growth at both the regional and international levels.She also expressed appreciation for the willingness of both sides to move forward in addressing their differences through dialogue and peaceful means, and commended the efforts made by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and other regional and international parties to help reduce tensions, bridge differences, and facilitate the agreement.Her Excellency affirmed that Qatar's steadfast commitment to the Women, Peace and Security agenda is reflected in its initiatives and widely recognized diplomatic efforts in mediation, as well as its dedication to creating broader opportunities for women to participate in dialogue processes and decision-making.In this regard, she noted Qatar's accession to the campaign launched by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, entitled "Common Pledge for Women's Full, Equal and Meaningful Participation in Peace Processes." She also highlighted Qatar's active membership in the Arab Women Mediators Network and pointed to the country's hosting of the third meeting of the Working Group on Women, Peace and Security for the Arab States in Jan. 2025, which emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in supporting women's roles and leadership in peace and security efforts.

A delegation from the Russian Ministry of Defense visited the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security as part of efforts to strengthen security cooperation between the State of Qatar and the Russian Federation.The delegation was welcomed by the Director General of Coasts and Borders Security, Staff Lieutenant Colonel (Navy) Hassan Ahmed Al Sulaiti, along with several officers.During the visit, the Russian delegation, led by Deputy Chief of the National Defense Management Center of the Russian Federation, Vice Admiral Kalganov Viktor Andreevich, was briefed on the duties of the General Directorate of Coasts and Borders Security, its role in coastal protection, executing search and rescue operations, and securing vital marine installations.
