The Lebanese Army Thursday received 37 vehicles from Qatar, delivered through the Qatar Fund for Development as part of a 162-vehicle grant to bolster operational capacity. “This support reflects Qatar’s steadfast commitment to Lebanon’s security and stability,” said His Excellency Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman al‑Thani, Qatar’s ambassador to Lebanon. Brigadier General Amin al-Qaai, representing the Lebanese Army Commander, thanked Qatar for “its continued and sincere support to the Lebanese military institution.” 

Silence is a cornerstone of Gustavo Santaolalla’s music. A silence so loaded with meaning because of how and where it arises in his compositions that “sometimes it’s louder than the notes,” as he puts it.At his recent special performance at QNCC with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the Doha Film Festival’s music line-up — and also a part of the Qatar-Argentina and Chile 2025 Year of Culture activities — that majestic silence of his music kept shining through like gentle sunbeams filtering through the leaves of trees. Often, Santaolalla’s signature ebbs and flows is described simply as music that “connects with the heart and with emotions” and his moving Doha debut show was instant proof.The two-time Oscar-winning composer, songwriter, and producer’s iconic scores include Brokeback Mountain, Babel, The Motorcycle Diaries, Amores Perros, and most recently, The Last of Us (for both the video game and the web series). Towards the end of his visit to Doha, Gulf Times caught up with the 71-year-old Argentine multi-instrumentalist for an exclusive interview. From winning two Oscars, two Grammys, a Golden Globe, and 17 Latin Grammy awards, to an almost six-decade-long musical career that shaped the soundscape of Latin rock music and world cinema, how do you look at your musical journey in its entirety?Somewhere along the way, I realised that doing everything completes me. I love every aspect of making music; producing, composing by myself, composing with a group, composing for films, for animation, you name it. I love art and to be able to express my creativity. As an Argentinian, let me use a football analogy. Sometimes, I’m a striker scoring goals. Sometimes, I’m a midfielder strategising, or a goalkeeper, manager, coach. Sometimes I’m just cheering. But I’m always in the match. I have endless curiosity. I love to learn and expand my knowledge. Apart from making music, I run a book publishing company, a beverage company, and I am working on a perfume that we will be releasing next year. Doing different things allows me to keep learning and applying those learnings to the multiple interests that I have developed. Your Doha performance was phenomenal. Would it be correct to say that your ongoing global Ronroco Tour is a tribute to your vast body of work?Yes, the Ronroco Tour is my tribute to a 10-stringed, Andean instrument called Ronroco, my special relationship with that instrument, and the music that the ronroco has inspired, including my album (Ronroco). This tour is my first such in my career where all my music is centred in one space, connected through the ronroco. My concerts have always been marked with incredible eclecticism. So the Ronroco tour is very different and it has really blossomed.You like to experiment with various stringed instruments. Tell us a little about how this influences your approach to a film score.For Babel, I wanted to find an instrument that can connect the three stories. I wanted it to sound like world music and yet one shouldn’t be able to tell from which part of the world it was. In Oud I found a wonderful Middle-Eastern instrument that could tie the story together. I’m not an oud player and it doesn’t have frets like a guitar has. I played it with my fingers without using a plectrum. What I like about playing a new instrument is that it demands me to be minimalistic and allows me to play with silence and space. It was playful but it had an element of danger too. Your music is most often described as very visual and that it “touches the heart”. How does it play out deep inside you?Sometimes, I feel that music is like scenes in a movie and the choice of instrumentation is like the set design. What elements would you put in the set and why? I like the idea of breaks and pauses in songs, which to me are like a movie’s editing where you can move to an entirely different shot or thought. So I think almost in film terms when I’m making music. It’s always about storytelling anyway. So the element of surprise is there. The moments of calm and action are at play. I’m always conscious about all of these things when composing and performing music. Does this explain your usual approach where you read the film’s script and talk to the filmmaker and then dive into scoring music?Yes. That’s because I haven’t been trained to read or write music. Although I have composed music to visuals too, I find it very inspiring to write or compose based on the script, the story, the characters, and from a conversation with the director so that I see his or her vision. Once the vision is clear, it helps define. Filmmaker David Lynch said that the more you define something, the less things that thing is. So by defining something more specifically and giving more information about something, you kill it. If there’s magic that you are to discover, it’s gone. When you see it already on screen, then you know how someone looks, walks, and talks. But when I work out of a script or a conversation, it’s all so abstract and can be musically interpreted in several ways. That’s why it’s important to retain the mystery that things have, and be wary of how much you define something.

Qatar Chamber board member Ali bin Abdellatif al-Misnad held a meeting Tuesday with a trade delegation from the Czech Republic comprising several companies operating in the energy sector. The delegation was headed by engineer Ali al-Fatesh, director of the Czech Trade Promotion Agency office in Qatar. The meeting reviewed Qatar–Czech trade and investment relations and explored opportunities for co-operation between the Qatari business community and its Czech counterpart. During the meeting, Czech energy companies presented potential investment and partnership opportunities. Al-Misnad lauded the strong Qatar-Czech trade relations across several sectors like trade, tourism and healthcare, stressing the Qatari private sector’s interest in expanding co-operation and establishing trade and investment partnerships with Czech companies. He affirmed Qatar Chamber’s support for such co-operation and its readiness to assist Czech firms seeking to enter the Qatari market, highlighting Qatar’s attractive investment environment and expressing hope for long-term partnerships between the two sides. For his part, al-Fatesh noted that the delegation included five leading Czech energy companies keen to establish businesses in Qatar, form partnerships with Qatari firms, and benefit from the country’s economic incentives and advanced infrastructure.

The Qatar Society of Engineers marked Qatari Engineers Day with the support and participation of the Ministry of Social Development and Family Affairs, and in co-operation with the College of Engineering at Qatar University.Qatari Engineers Day is an occasion to celebrate and highlight the pivotal role of engineers in building a sustainable future and supporting Qatar National Vision 2030. It also underscores the Qatar Society of Engineers' pioneering role in launching national professional platforms that bring together decision-makers, academic institutions, and the labour market in a practical dialogue aimed at developing the engineering profession and empowering national talent.Chairperson of the Qatar Society of Engineers, Eng. Amna Mohammed al-Naama said the celebration coincides with the society's anniversary. She noted the achievements of Qatari engineers and their active contributions to all engineering sectors and the nation's development.She explained that the celebration, in addition to showcasing the engineers' achievements, addressed the challenges they face, including the various engineering specialisations, labour market needs, the integration of artificial intelligence and new technologies into the engineering sector and their impact, as well as the field of cybersecurity.She added that among the many achievements of the association, particularly during the past year, were those related to training and organising engineering conferences and forums. For example, the association launched the "Engineers Without Borders" programme and its website, in addition to organising the Qatar International Facilities Management Conference and Exhibition, the LED Technology and Renewable Energy Exhibition last October, and other important events.In her speech during the celebration, Eng. Amna al-Naama emphasised that holding the event at the College of Engineering at Qatar University reflects the depth of the partnership between the association and academic institutions and the belief that empowering engineers begins with integrating education with professional practice and the needs of the labour market.She pointed out that the engineering sector is witnessing rapid transformations that present new challenges and opportunities, noting that the true investment is in human capital, and that empowering engineers is a fundamental pillar for achieving Qatar's National Vision and building a future based on knowledge and innovation.Assistant Undersecretary for Social Development Affairs at the Ministry of Social Development and Family, Fahad Mohammed al-Khayarin commended the efforts of the Qatar Society of Engineers in his speech during the ceremony, praising its dedicated work in serving the profession, engineers, and the community.He stated the Ministry of Social Development and Family believes that associations and private institutions are essential partners in development, particularly professional associations, given their crucial role in advancing the profession, empowering national talent, and building sustainable career paths.He explained that, from this perspective, the ministry plays its role in supervising, regulating, supporting, and empowering institutions, as well as promoting governance and sustainability within the legal frameworks governing the work of associations.This ensures their stability, growth, and societal impact.He specifically mentioned the Qatar Society of Engineers, which he described as a distinguished model of an effective professional association, highlighting its high-quality initiatives, targeted programmes, and its role in supporting engineers, promoting a culture of professional volunteering, and building partnerships with academic, governmental, and private sector entities.He noted that the ministry views professional associations as strategic partners that contribute to raising the efficiency of national talent, supporting innovation and professional excellence, and ultimately achieving the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.Al-Khayarin reiterated the Ministry of Social Development and Family's full commitment to continuing its work with the Qatar Society of Engineers and all professional associations, thereby strengthening their role, enhancing their impact, and serving the nation and its citizens.Dean of the College of Engineering at Qatar University, Dr Mohammed Hussein Farouk also spoke at the event, emphasising that this gathering represents a significant milestone as it addresses pivotal issues of concern to both the academic and industrial sectors in Qatar.He highlighted Qatar's remarkable progress and development across various sectors, and the active and influential role of engineering graduates in these achievements.During the celebration, two panel discussions were held, addressing topics related to the challenges facing engineers and the job market, as well as the societal role of national associations in empowering national talent.These discussions touched upon the rapid advancements in technology, particularly digital technologies, and their impact on education, the nature of work in the industrial sector, and the job market in general. The role of artificial intelligence in reshaping the job market and the skills required was also discussed.
