The Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) at Qatar Chamber, in cooperation with the Community Service and Continuing Education Centre at Qatar University, has concluded the first edition of its specialised training programme for 2026 titled ‘Qualification and Preparation of Arbitrators’. The programme aimed to equip Qatari professionals and residents working in the country with practical and legal expertise in the field of commercial arbitration. QICCA vice-chairman Sheikh Dr Thani bin Ali al-Thani attended the closing ceremony held at the College of Law at Qatar University. Following the completion of the final stage, titled ‘Practical Mock Trial’, Sheikh Thani presented certificates to 24 trainees from various governmental, semi-governmental, and private entities. The programme comprised five stages covering key topics, including the concept and practical applications of commercial arbitration, case management procedures from the arbitrator’s perspective, and the drafting of arbitration awards. It concluded with a practical training session featuring a mock arbitration exercise involving all participants. 

Amidst uncertainties surrounding the US-Iran talks, the Qatar Stock Exchange Wednesday saw its key index fall more than 19 points with four of the seven sectors coming under the bearish grip.The domestic institutions were increasingly net sellers as the 20-stock Qatar Index shed 0.17% to 11,270.62 points, although it touched an intraday high of 11,290 points.The telecom, consumer goods and transport counters witnessed higher than average selling pressure in the main market, whose year-to-date gains truncated to 4.72%.About 51% of the traded constituents were in the red in the main bourse, whose capitalisation was down QR0.2bn or 0.03% to QR672.22bn mainly on account of microcap segments.The Arab retail investors’ increased net selling had its impact on the main bourse, whose trade turnover fell amidst higher volumes.The Gulf individuals were seen increasingly net profit takers in the main market, which saw 0.01mn exchange traded funds (sponsored by AlRayan Bank and Doha Bank) valued at QR0.03mn trade across six deals.The local retail investors continued to be net sellers but with lesser intensity in the main bourse, which saw no trading of sovereign bonds.The Islamic index was seen weakening slower than the main barometer of the main market, which saw no trading of treasury bills.The Total Return Index was down 0.17%, the All Share Index by 0.11% and the All Islamic Index by 0.14% in the main bourse.The telecom sector declined 0.79%, consumer goods and services (0.73%), transport (0.38%) and banks and financial services (0.04%); while real estate gained 0.56%, insurance (0.24%) and industrials (0.08%).As many as 23 gained, while 27 declined and three were unchanged.Major shakers in the main market included Widam Food, Qatar Oman Investment, Meeza, Gulf Warehousing, Ooredoo, Salam International Investment, Woqod, Mekdam Holding, Estithmar Holding, Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding, Qamco and Milaha.Nevertheless, Mosanada Facilities Management Services, Ahlibank Qatar, Ezdan, Baladna, Vodafone Qatar, Industries Qatar and United Development Company were among the gainers in the main bourse.The domestic funds’ net profit booking increased noticeably to QR18.03mn against QR9.41mn on February 24.The Gulf institutions turned net sellers to the tune of QR7.32mn compared with net buyers of QR6.56mn on Tuesday.The Gulf individual investors’ net selling grew markedly to QR2.27mn against QR1.08mn the previous day.The Arab individuals’ net profit booking rose marginally to QR2.94mn compared to QR2.88mn on February 24.The foreign institutions’ net buying decreased significantly to QR34.55mn against QR48.03mn on Tuesday.However, the foreign individuals were net buyers to the extent of QR2.2mn compared with net sellers of QR3.31mn the previous day.The local retail investors’ net profit booking shrank considerably to QR6.19mn against QR37.9mn on February 24.The Arab funds had no major net exposure for the third consecutive session.The main market saw an 8% jump in trade volumes at 144.34mn shares but on 13% decline in value to QR406.39mn and 19% in deals to 24,007.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Ramadan tournament got underway on Tuesday evening with men’s shooting competitions (individual and family categories) and men’s singles table tennis matches. The tournament, organised for QOC employees and their families, runs until March 5 at the Lusail International Shooting Complex, in a vibrant Ramadan atmosphere filled with unity, energy, and sporting spirit.The opening day featured shooting and table tennis competitions, along with traditional games and recreational activities for children. A range of community services were also provided by the Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan), Qatar Diabetes Association, Cyber Sports Events Center, and Naseem Medical Centre. The program included an Olympic quiz segment and the distribution of prizes to participants.In the shooting (singles) event, Khalid Nasser al-Rumaihi claimed first place, while Mohammed Ahmed al-Rumaihi finished second. In the shooting (doubles) event, the duo of Khalid Nasser al-Rumaihi and Abdulrahman al-Rumaihi secured first place, with Salem Abdulhalim and Abdulrahman Abdulhalim coming in second. Meanwhile, in the men’s table tennis singles event, Mohammed Abdulsalam captured first place, while Khalid Al-Akkad finished as runner-up.This year’s tournament includes five diverse sports: shooting, table tennis (introduced for the first time), padel, football (making its debut), and beach volleyball. The variety reflects the QOC’s commitment to expanding its sports programs and enhancing competitiveness and renewal in each edition.Football competitions will take place on March 1 and 2, featuring teams from the General Secretariat, the Shooting Federation, the Procurement and Logistics Department, the Public Relations Department, and the Sports Events Department. Beach volleyball matches will be held from March 3 and 5, with teams representing the President’s Office, Sports Events Department, Procurement and Logistics Department, Shooting Federation, Public Relations Department, and Sports Affairs Department.Mana Ahmed al-Jael, Director of the QOC Ramadan Tournament 2026, confirmed that this year’s edition includes 250 participants. He explained that the addition of table tennis and football came in response to a staff survey, allowing participants to select sports that suit their physical abilities and personal interests.He also noted that the Qatar Shooting and Archery Federation, as the host entity, will participate for the first time in football and beach volleyball competitions, after successfully hosting five previous Ramadan editions at its venues.

The Community Education Programme at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), in collaboration with Qatar Academy Doha, has concluded a six-week initiative that invited young students to explore sustainability through hands-on creative practice, combining environmental awareness with digital storytelling.Waste to Art ran from January 4 to February 17, engaging 26 QAD students across years four to five. Participants repurposed everyday waste into sculptural figures and then “activated” their creations through stop-motion film, bridging traditional craftsmanship and digital media.“The Community Education Programme at VCUarts Qatar is committed to building a strong and equitable creative community,” said Rasha Alkasab, programme manager at VCUarts Qatar. “By integrating themes such as sustainability into art and design, we equip students with a strong creative foundation while contributing to a multiversity environment that nurtures collaboration and innovation across the Qatar Foundation ecosystem.”Mada Sadek, art teacher at Qatar Academy Doha, highlighted the pedagogical impact: “For the past three years, our students have engaged regularly with VCUarts Qatar. By starting this journey in Grade 3 and continuing through Grade 5, they have developed skills that broaden their horizons. This experience supports the development of the 'whole child,' as these innovative thinking skills transfer into subjects like mathematics and language.”Projects were evaluated based on design quality, conceptual development, sustainability, technical execution, and reflection.First place was awarded to Alesha Gunay for The Sunset Race, a work inspired by a passion for Formula 1 that used old pastels, sandpaper, cardboard, wire, and yarn to capture the energy of the track. Second place went to Yosra Aqel for The Evolution of Amber, an animation created using pinecones, pompoms, and feathers that follows a character named Amber as she overcomes challenges to learn to fly, symbolising resilience and integrity. And third place was awarded to Lynn Alameddine for Monty, constructed from forks, straws, and recycled cardboard. The story follows Monty, a character navigating a disability, serving as an inspiring reminder that anyone can shine regardless of physical challenges.The VCUarts Qatar Community Education Programme offers creative learning opportunities for youth and lifelong learners through workshops and short courses in art and design. Rooted in experimentation, critical thinking, and cultural exchange, the programme fosters artistic growth and community engagement across Qatar. 

His Excellency the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie affirmed that Qatar Environment Day, observed annually on Feb 26, represents an opportunity to evaluate the progress of environmental work, review its priorities, and highlight the importance of community awareness in protecting the environment as a fundamental pillar of comprehensive development and Qatar National Vision 2030.In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), HE the Minister said that this year’s slogan, "Our behaviour reflects on our environment," stressed the notion that environmental protection was no longer solely an institutional responsibility, but rather a daily approach that begins with the individual and extends its impact to society.He noted that the daily practices of individuals and institutions directly affect environmental quality, underscoring the importance of community participation in supporting national environmental efforts.He added that the State of Qatar, with the support of its wise leadership, has established a balanced approach to environmental and climate work that reconciles economic development with the protection of natural resources.This approach is based on strategic planning, effective governance, scientific data, and integrated coordination among national entities to ensure resource sustainability and enhance quality of life.He said that the year 2025 marked a pivotal phase, witnessing the implementation of national policies, strategies, and projects that contributed to developing the environmental work system and enhancing the country’s readiness to address environmental and climate challenges, within the framework of the National Environment and Climate Change Strategy 2024-2030 and the Third National Development Strategy.Among the most notable achievements were the launch of the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan, the National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2025-2030, and the introduction of a biodiversity database documenting more than 2,567 species and making it accessible to researchers and the public through an interactive platform.On the legislative and regulatory front, he revealed that the legal framework governing environmental work had been updated, including a draft law on environmental protection and sustainability, as well as regulatory decisions related to the safe transport of radioactive materials and grazing regulation. Specialized technical and guidance manuals on environmental assessment and radiological and nuclear emergencies were also prepared to strengthen environmental compliance and improve risk management efficiency.Digital transformationDr al-Subaie also highlighted the development of the environmental assessment system through updated licensing methodologies and the launch of an intelligent environmental impact assessment system. He noted the progress in digital transformation, with electronic services expanding to include 89 services and 30 services available through the Bee’ah (environment) application, alongside the launch of an AI-powered virtual assistant to enhance user experience and government performance efficiency.In the field of monitoring and surveillance, HE the Minister that the ministry continued developing the national air quality monitoring network, implementing marine and water monitoring programs, supporting biodiversity and wildlife protection, managing protected areas, and carrying out breeding programs for endangered species and rehabilitating degraded environments.He emphasized the importance of environmental innovation through the national environmental creativity and innovation platform Bithrah (seed), which supports research projects and community initiatives, in addition to strengthening international cooperation, actively participating in environmental and climate forums, and signing memoranda of understanding in environmental protection and biodiversity.He said that media campaigns and awareness programs during 2025 helped reinforce responsible environmental behaviour, and that the slogan "Our behaviour reflects on our environment" embodied the essence of national environmental work, as environmental protection begins with daily conduct. He stressed that the commitment of individuals and institutions forms the foundation for ensuring the sustainability of natural resources and quality of life.In environmental monitoring and surveillance, he noted the continued development of the national air quality monitoring network and the availability of its data to the public through an updated electronic platform, alongside regular monitoring programs and the issuance of technical reports and specialized environmental studies that support preventive policies and strengthen environmental knowledge.He added that marine environmental protection was a priority in 2025, through the implementation of monitoring programs for coastal and marine waters and estuaries in co-operation with national research institutions, to ensure the health and sustainability of marine ecosystems. Regarding biodiversity and wildlife, he explained that the ministry implemented programs to protect species and natural habitats, manage protected areas, carry out breeding programs for endangered species, and activate the national program for effective management of protected areas, in line with the Global Biodiversity Framework.He also noted the implementation of programs to rehabilitate degraded rawdas (natural depressions), cultivate native wild plants, fence numerous rawdas, and expand desertification control efforts through the launch of the second phase of a project for wild plant propagation, with a production capacity of approximately 25,000 seedlings and 300,000 seeds annually.Ministry's effortsIn the field of studies and research, he highlighted the ministry’s efforts to institutionalize environmental innovation through the launch of the national environmental creativity and innovation platform, the first specialized digital platform for environmental innovation in Qatar. He noted that the platform attracted community participation and supported research projects in co-operation with relevant national entities.Regarding international co-operation, he said that Qatar continued its active participation in regional and international environmental and climate forums and contributed to shaping global environmental policies. He added that the country expanded its network of international partnerships and signed memoranda of understanding in environmental protection and biodiversity, and exchanged expertise in these fields to strengthen its position on the global environmental stage.On the awareness front, HE the Minister emphasized the importance of raising environmental awareness, noting that during 2025 the ministry implemented several media campaigns, awareness programs, and community activities targeting various segments of society, which contributed to reinforcing responsible environmental behavior.In conclusion, HE al-Subaie said that Qatar Environment Day represents a national milestone for strengthening partnerships between government entities, the private sector, and society, within an integrated approach that balances development and environmental protection.

Waad al-Maadeed, who graduated from Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) last year, received the Platinum Educational Excellence Award during the Educational Excellence Award ceremony from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. The award recognises students who demonstrate excellence across multiple dimensions, including leadership, personal development, community contribution, and research.Standing on the stage with His Highness the Amir, with her family in the audience, was a surreal experience for al-Maadeed. “It felt like the perfect ending to a long chapter of hard work, but also the beginning of something even bigger,” she said. “It was a moment I shared with my family, who have supported me every step of the way and a reminder to the community that Qatar’s investment in its youth is resulting in excellence across the country.” At the GU-Q, there was resounding response to her achievement. “It is an incredible honour and a powerful testament to Waad’s dedication, talent, and perseverance,” said Dr Ken Grich, associate dean of students. It was also a chance to celebrate two other GU-Q students recognised at the ceremony: first-year students Fatma al-Mohannadi and Fatma al-Kuwari, honoured for their exemplary high school careers. It’s a fitting place for them to continue pursuing excellence, says al-Maadeed, who saw the GU-Q as a place to grow not just academically, but as a person committed to the greater good. Shortly after graduating, she was selected for the Qatar Leadership Centre’s Young Leaders Programme, a competitive international fellowship that placed her at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Now working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, al-Maadeed is focusing on a future of giving back to her country.
