 Mikel Arteta is “fully convinced” Arsenal can be crowned champions of Europe for the first time this weekend after ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title. The Gunners face reigning European kings Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday’s Champions League final in Budapest after wrapping up their first Premier League title since 2004. A star-studded Paris Saint-Germain, who thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in last season’s final, are widely regarded as favourites to lift the European Cup once again. But Arsenal manager Arteta believes the confidence gained by winning the Premier League will inspire the Gunners to upset the odds. “You could sense the energy, you can sense the positivity and the confidence in the players and everybody around the club,” he said. “We have an amazing opportunity to write new history in our football club, and we are convinced that we’re going to do it. We will fly to Budapest on Thursday fully convinced that in a few days’ time we can be champions of Europe.” The 44-year-old Spaniard was speaking at the League Managers Association’s annual awards dinner in central London on Tuesday, where he was named Premier League manager of the year. “First of all, thank you so much for giving me this award,” said former Everton and Arsenal midfielder Arteta. “It’s an immense honour. You’re related to some of the great managers and all the colleagues that are in this room. It’s been a fascinating journey for a few years. We’ve been knocking on the door, we’ve been trying, we fell short a few times, and to actually win it made it so special.” Arteta thanked several people upon receiving the award, including Everton boss David Moyes for introducing him to English football when he signed him in 2005. He also praised his “instrumental” coaching team, saying: “They’ve been an inspiration, they’ve been extremely supportive with me. They made me enjoy this profession in a way that probably I could not imagine.”

Neymar has been ruled out of Brazil's upcoming friendlies ‌and is set to miss their World Cup opener ​after scans revealed a ‌grade-two calf injury, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on ‌Thursday.CBF doctor Rodrigo ⁠Lasmar delivered ‌the blow ahead of a players' ‌press conference, confirming the 34-year-old forward faces two to three more ⁠weeks on the sidelines."Neymar reported for duty yesterday here at Granja Comary, underwent all the medical tests, which concluded with an MRI scan revealing a grade-two calf injury, not just swelling. He is expected to be cleared in two to three weeks," Lasmar said.He did not say whether Neymar could be dropped from the ​squad. He had joined the team on Tuesday but missed Wednesday's first training session and was sent to a private clinic in Teresopolis for imaging tests ‌after complaints of swelling in ⁠his right calf.​According to Lasmar, the MRI showed not swelling, as ​previously reported, but a Grade 2 calf strain - a moderate injury involving a partial tear of the muscle fibers that requires rest and rehabilitation.The diagnosis differs from that presented by Santos prior to the squad announcement. The club's doctor Rodrigo Zogaib had stated the problem was merely swelling and that Neymar would arrive fit to begin training on Tuesday.Instead, Brazil's all-time leading scorer will miss Sunday's friendly against Panama at the Maracana and the ‌subsequent match against Egypt ‌in Cleveland. He is also ⁠all but ruled out of Brazil's World Cup opener against African ⁠champions Morocco on June ⁠13 in New Jersey.Brazil are in Group C also alongside Haiti and Scotland.Manager Carlo Ancelotti had already been without defenders Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos and forward Gabriel Martinelli for Sunday's fixture due to their involvement in last weekend's Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.Neymar's ​recall last week had generated widespread excitement after he had not featured in Ancelotti's plans during the Italian's year in charge. The forward, who has scored 79 goals in 128 international appearances, has endured years of injury trouble and an underwhelming return to Santos.In an interview in early May, Ancelotti said that Neymar would receive no special treatment and that his place in the squad ‌would be strictly based ​on fitness and form, not sentiment.For now, Brazil must plan without him.

A 28-member Qatar football squad - coached by Julen Lopetegui - on Wednesday left Doha for Dublin where they will play an international against Ireland on Thursday. Following their friendly in Dublin, the Qatar squad will then leave for Los Angeles, United States, where they are scheduled to play their final friendly against El Salvador on June 6. On Tuesday, coach Lopetegui announced a 28-member squad. The squad will be trimmed to 26 on or before June 2nd deadline announced by FIFA. The FIFA World Cup will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Two-time Asian champions Qatar secured qualification for a second consecutive FIFA World Cup - the first on merit - after progressing through the play-offs against Oman and the UAE late last year. Al Annabi have been drawn in Group B and will open their campaign against Switzerland on June 13 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium before facing co-hosts Canada on June 19 in Vancouver and Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 24 in Seattle. Qatar will base their FIFA World Cup campaign in Santa Barbara, California, with the national team set to train at Westmont College after FIFA confirmed team base camps for the 2026 tournament. The Qatar squad will stay in the coastal Californian city during the expanded 48-team World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from next month. FIFA announced the official list of team base camps, with Qatar assigned to Santa Barbara, where Westmont College will serve as the team’s training site as the Gulf nation prepare for another appearance on football’s biggest stage. “Team Base Camps are an integral part of the fabric of any FIFA World Cup,” said Heimo Schirgi, FIFA World Cup 2026 chief operating officer. “They are where teams put down roots, train and recuperate, and experience the day-to-day rhythms of the tournament,” he added. Defending champions Argentina and England were both assigned bases in Kansas City, while the majority of participating nations will be stationed across the United States.According to FIFA, 39 of the 48 competing teams will be based in the United States, with seven teams located in Mexico and two in Canada. Iran were confirmed to be based in Tijuana, Mexico, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum saying on Monday that the country would allow the team to stay there to avoid potential United States visa restrictions.  

The Local Organising Committee for Football Events (LOC) has announced that the Lebanon v Yemen AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier will take place on June 4 at Grand Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Originally scheduled for March 31, 2026 in Beirut, Lebanon will now play their home match on neutral soil in Qatar, where they face Yemen’s Al-Yaman as-Sa'eed in this decisive fixture jointly staged by the LOC and the Lebanese Football Association (LFA). Starting 31 May, fans in Qatar and across the region can purchase tickets for the much-anticipated qualifier at www.roadtoqatar.qa. Upon purchase, tickets will be made immediately available on Road to Qatar, the official ticketing app for the match. Grand Hamad Stadium will host Lebanon for the second time during their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign, where they previously claimed a 2-0 win over Bhutan on October 9, 2025. The venue also most recently hosted Yemen in the FIFA Arab Cup Qualifier on November 26, 2025 that ended in a dramatic 4-4 draw against Comoros. Lebanon and Yemen will meet for the second time in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign, with their previous encounter on June 10, 2025 ending in a 0-0 draw. On 4 June, both nations will vie for the final spot in Group E of the tournament, with the winner joining South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. The 19th edition of the AFC Asian Cup is set to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027. Lebanon have made three appearances at the competition, as hosts in 2000, and qualifying in 2019 and at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023. The 2019 edition also marked Yemen's historic debut at the continental championship. The Lebanon v Yemen qualifier is the latest in a series of high-profile international matches hosted by Qatar, showcasing the international football community's trust in its ability to deliver world-class sporting experiences. Grand Hamad Stadium, with a capacity of 13,000, has hosted several international fixtures, including FIFA World Cup qualification matches. The stadium also served as the base camp for the Brazil national football team during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and currently serves as home ground of Qatari club Al Arabi SC.

AC Milan announced they had sacked coach Massimiliano Allegri and a host of senior club management after missing out on next season's Champions League.The 19-time Serie A winners lost 2-1 at home to Cagliari on Sunday in the final game of the league game season denying them a return to European football's leading competition.Allegri, 58, was appointed last May, returning to the northern club 11 years following his first tenure ended, after they also failed to qualify for the Champions League. Former striker and now RedBird advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic keeps his position despite being heavily criticised by the seven-time European Cup winners' fans."After the disappointment of last year, the mandate ownership set for the club was to return to the Champions League and to establish a foundation for winning consistently at the top of Serie A," AC Milan's owners RedBird capital said."It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganisation of football operations. Effective immediately, we are parting ways with CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, head coach Massimiliano Allegri and technical director Geoffrey Moncada."We thank each one for their hard work and dedication to AC Milan during their respective tenures. Further announcements regarding the next appointments will be made in due course - with the goal to be ready and well prepared for the next season," they added.Milan finished one point below Como in the fourth and final Champions League spot after the loss to lowly Cagliari and Cesc Fabregas' side's win at Cremonese. They had started the day in third.They spent more than half of the season in the top two of the table before an end of season slump which included three losses, a draw and just one win. After the Cagliari shock former Juve boss Allegri had said nothing about his future at the San Siro."For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto," RedBird said. "The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night's disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure," they added.Milan will start the new Serie A season on the weekend of August 22-23 and will also feature in the second-tier Europa League. Red Bird will now look for a fifth man in charge since they took over the club in 2024.Italian media have linked Antonio Conte, who has just left Napoli and Atalanta's Raffaele Palladino, with the Milan job.
