QF rolls out Rasekh framework for international schools

In a major initiative to promote cultural identity as well as Arabic language and connect it with global academic standards, Qatar Foundation (QF) has launched the accreditation framework for its innovative programme, Rasekh.At a forum held at Multaqa Sunday at Education City, Sheikha Noof Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, vice-president (Strategic Educational Initiatives) at the QF’s Pre-University Education (PUE), announced the details of the initiative.The QF also introduced the first cohort of participating institutions from Qatar and the wider region, which will serve as a foundation for Rasekh’s future expansion.The event ‘Rasekh Strategic Forum’ was attended by QF chief executive Yousif al-Naama, PUE president Abeer al-Khalifa, private international school leaders, and local and global education partners.Rasekh works to align international curricula with the local context, integrate core values into daily school life and channel innovation toward community needs and local challenges while supporting schools in promoting Arabic as a language of learning and knowledge development.Speaking at the event, Sheikha Noof said: "Rasekh represents a practical step forward in the development of international education in Qatar.”“It looks at educational quality from a broader perspective, encompassing not only what students learn, but how they perceive themselves within that learning, and their connection to their language, environment, and values,” she said.The official said that the QF has established a framework that supports international schools in implementing global standards in the local context, and brings the educational experience closer to the student's life.“We want the international education experience to provide students with a strong foundation of belonging and confidence, empowering them to contribute to their communities and interact with the world consciously and capably," she explained.The new phase also saw the launch of the awareness campaign “Roots”, designed to bring the message of Rasekh closer to the community through a symbolic image that reflects how the initiative promotes language, instils values, and consolidates identity.The campaign has three main messages: “Roots that Empower the Arabic Language”, “Roots that Instill Values”, and “Roots that Nurture Identity”, with an official slogan, *Toward an Education That Deepens Roots and Creates Impact.Featuring contemporary Arabic visual identity, Roots’s digital materials are intended to make Rasekh’s message resonate with parents, students, and the wider community.The forum brought together school leaders and international educational institutions to discuss how Rasekh accreditation provides schools with a practical, measurable roadmap for aligning the education they offer with their local context without compromising global academic standards.Maryam al-Hajri, executive director of Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships at the PUE, gave a presentation on the initiative as a whole.The forum also featured a panel discussion with Farida Aboudan, head of Education Sector at Unesco Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen; Mary Tadros, IB Development & Recognition senior manager for Africa, Europe and the Middle East; Fatima Hassan Fadlallah, Qatar country manager, Partnership for Education, at Cambridge University Press and Assessment' and Samia Bishara, managing director of Tarsheed.Rasekh’s first cohort of schools include: QF schools; Al Maha Academy for Boys, Al Maha Academy for Girls, Al Jazeera Academy, Arab International Academy in Doha, Arab International Academy in Lusail, Amman Baccalaureate School in Jordan, and Houssam Eddine Hariri High School in Lebanon.This inaugural cohort will help to build applied models demonstrating how international schools can adopt the framework to elevate educational quality, strengthen school character, and improve student outcomes.

'So many of us!' Mexicans attempt world's biggest human wave

Just days before Mexico hosts the World Cup’s opening match, thousands of people packed the capital’s main thoroughfare Saturday in a bid to set a new record for the largest-ever human wave.The tradition of the wave was popularized in Mexico’s soccer stadiums during the 1986 World Cup to cheer on the home squad, and it has grown into a global phenomenon.Locals rallied to the cause early Saturday, donning national football jerseys and waving flags as they danced to loud music and stretched their arms and legs.Standing in the front row of a crowd stretching two kilometers (1.2 miles) down the iconic Paseo de la Reforma, a wide avenue that runs through the heart of Mexico City, Sally Aviles expressed confidence in a new record.“I say we’re going to break it. There are already so many of us, and we can do it!” said the 31-year-old content creator.“We’ll make it happen because we’ve always done it — at every game, in every stadium.”Joining the crowd were women dressed in lavish gowns and wearing skeleton masks in the style of “catrinas,” iconic figures tied to the country’s Day of the Dead holiday.Members of the La Sonora Santanera orchestra pumped out tropical rhythms while a master of ceremonies guided the mass movement.“Attention! We drop to our knees, bend and spring up as fast as we can. Hands way up!” she shouted.On cue, the front row stood with arms raised and then knelt, while those behind repeated the motion in succession until the entire crowd swayed like swells on an ocean.“I couldn’t miss out on being part of this wonderful event, on showing the world what Mexico is really like — the atmosphere, the love, the unity, the peace,” said Gloria Fragoso, 55, wearing a traditional headdress.Fragoso said Mexico is “more than ready” to welcome fans arriving for the World Cup, which is being co-hosted by Canada and the US.Gang violence has scarred Mexico for years, and authorities have vowed to boost security as the country hosts tournament matches in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.Cultural authorities reported on social media later Saturday that the record for the largest human wave had been broken, without providing details.The Guinness World Records is to assess whether or not the record has been broken.

Guardiola goodbye spoiled by Man City loss to Aston Villa

Pep Guardiola bid an emotional farewell to Manchester City as a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday brought down the curtain on a glittering decade under the Catalan. The 55-year-old announced Friday that he is set to depart after winning 20 trophies in 10 seasons that made City the dominant force of English football. Guardiola made his entrance to a rousing reception alongside a giant banner bearing his face and the message "Game changer. History maker. City forever." **media[449633]**Catalan flags were unfurled behind one goal, while at the other end the newly named and expanded Pep Guardiola Stand was in operation for the first time. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss won six Premier League titles and City's only Champions League among his haul of 17 major pieces of silverware. Bernardo Silva and John Stones were part of the squads that won all of those trophies and were also given a fitting send-off in their final game for the club after a combined 19 seasons of service. Silva was in tears even before kick-off as he led City out as captain for the day. But there was little on the line for both sides on the field. City fell short in their quest to chase down Arsenal at the top of the table as a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth on Tuesday saw the Gunners crowned champions. Villa were still in celebratory mood after winning their first trophy for 30 years on Wednesday by claiming the Europa League. But victory for Unai Emery's men did ensure they finished in fourth ahead of Liverpool. Guardiola made nine changes from the side that started at Bournemouth with Erling Haaland among those to not even make the bench. Antoine Semenyo was one of the few City regulars to start and he put the home side in front with a clever finish from a corner. Decked in a resplendent white t-shirt and khaki trousers for the uncharacteristically searing temperates in England's north-west, Guardiola remained an animated figure on the touchline despite the dead rubber nature of the contest. However, he suffered a rare home defeat after Ollie Watkins struck twice in the second half to further justify his inclusion in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup. Watkins pounced on a poor header by England team-mate Stones to prod home from a corner. Both sides then stopped to make a guard of honour for Silva as he was substituted, prompting more tears from the Portugal international and Guardiola. Villa took advantage as City struggled to compose themselves moments later, Watkins surging clear and producing a classy finish for his 21st goal of the season. The testimonial nature of the afternoon continued as play was stopped once more for Stones to this time receive a guard of honour and appreciation from the City support. City thought they had salvaged at least a point when Phil Foden crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. But a controversial VAR review deemed Foden was offside despite inconclusive evidence.

After amassing 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the club's first Champions League, Pep Guardiola will step aside following Sunday's match at home to Aston Villa. (Reuters)

Man City needed 'new energy' as Guardiola seeks break from coaching

Pep Guardiola said on Friday he feared he would run out of the energy required to lead Manchester City after announcing his glittering 10-year tenure as manager will come to an end.After amassing 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the club's first Champions League, Guardiola will step aside following Sunday's match at home to Aston Villa."I think the club needs a new manager, new energy with these incredible players that we have right now and you start to write another chapter," said Guardiola at his pre-match press conference. "I feel I will not have the energy that requires, (matches) every three days, the expectations to fight for the titles, with being in front of the players."One of Guardiola's former assistants Enzo Maresca is reportedly set to take charge next season. Maresca, 46, has been out of work since leaving Chelsea in January, where he won the Club World Cup and Conference League in his only full season in charge.Guardiola will remain associated with the club as a global ambassador for the City Football Group. However, Guardiola ruled out an immediate return to the game in a coaching role.Since taking charge of Barcelona in 2008, the 55-year-old has had just one year out of the sport, when he took a sabbatical in New York before joining Bayern Munich in 2013. "I will not train for a while," added Guardiola."It's not 10 years. I've been, except for a year in New York, 17, 18 years, every three days, three days, three days, three days. I need to breathe a little bit, and relax. It'll be a while, that is my feeling right now."City announced that a stand at the Etihad Stadium will be named in Guardiola's honour and a statue has been commissioned of the Catalan. "It's been the experience of my life I would say, otherwise I would not be here 10 years," he said."I did my best, I gave everything, until the last drop of what I have. I am leaving with incredible peace, a sense of peace in my soul, that I gave everything to this club to be in a better position."City narrowly missed out on the Premier League title this season to Arsenal, managed by one of Guardiola's former assistants Mikel Arteta.But the City boss will depart with silverware in his final campaign after lifting both the League Cup and FA Cup.A parade through Manchester will take place on Monday to mark those achievements and Guardiola's legacy.

Arsenal on the brink of title after nervy win over Burnley

Arsenal are on the brink of ending a 22-year wait to win the Premier League after beating Burnley 1-0 to open up a five-point lead at the top. Kai Havertz headed in the only goal but was also lucky to avoid a second-half red card that could swung the title race back in Manchester City's favour.The Gunners could be crowned champions as early as today should City fail to win at Bournemouth. Even if City do end the Cherries' 16-game unbeaten run and beat Aston Villa, Arsenal will secure the title with victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday.However, the narrow margin of victory against a Burnley side that have long since been relegated does offer City hope.An Arsenal draw at Selhurst Park would allow City to snatch the title on goal difference if Pep Guardiola's team win their final two matches. To add extra intrigue to the final days of the season, reports on Monday suggest Guardiola will leave City after a decorared decade in charge after Villa visit the Etihad on Sunday.Roared on by an expectant capacity crowd in their final home game of the season, Arsenal were tipped to put the Clarets to the sword with ease. Burnley have taken just two points from their last 10 matches but made Mikel Arteta's men work for the three points on another nervy night at the Emirates.Leandro Trossard struck the post from the edge of the area before Bukayo Saka saw a penalty appeal waived away as he attempted to turn in Havertz's low cross. Arsenal were forced to rely on their set piece threat once more to prise Burnley open.Havertz rose highest to power in Saka's delivery on 37 minutes as they scored from a corner for the 18th time in the league this season. Yet the floodgates did not open and Arsenal were very fortunate not to have to defend their lead with 10 men for the final quarter.Havertz raked his studs down the calf of Lesley Ugochukwu in a mistimed challenge. Despite a VAR review, the original decision of a yellow card was not upgraded to red.Havertz was quickly replaced by Viktor Gyokeres. The Swede's arrival failed to kickstart Arsenal as an attacking force. But their rock solid defensive record again edged them closer to the title. Since losing to City last month, Arsenal have not conceded in their last four league games.
