Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, met separately Monday with Imec Centre executive vice-president and chief Global Development, Partnerships and Venturing officer Max Mirgoli, and Imagine Institute for Genetic Diseases director Dr Bana Jabri, on the sidelines of Web Summit Qatar 2026. They discussed avenues of collaboration across research, medicine, technology, and innovation.  

Dukhan Bank has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Teyseer Group on the sidelines of Web Summit Qatar, establishing a structured framework to explore potential areas of collaboration aimed at supporting startups, SMEs, and employee segments through integrated banking, technology, and financing solutions, subject to regulatory approvals and internal governance requirements.Under the MoU, the parties will explore joint onboarding propositions for startups and SMEs, including bundled offerings that combine Dukhan Bank’s startup and SME banking solutions with technology products and services provided by Teyseer Group entities, including Computer Arabia. These initiatives may include curated ‘Startup Packs’ featuring essential hardware, software, point-of-sale systems, and IT infrastructure for newly established businesses.The collaboration will also assess tailored product bundles for Teyseer Group employees, integrating Dukhan Bank’s banking solutions, such as accounts, cards, and payment services, with value-added offerings, subject to eligibility criteria and applicable regulations.In addition, Dukhan Bank and Teyseer Group will explore Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) and embedded financing propositions for SME and retail customers, including point-of-sale financing models to support SME capital expenditure requirements in a Shariah-compliant manner.The MoU further provides for joint marketing and lead generation initiatives, including cross-referrals of qualified startup and SME leads, alongside collaborative campaigns, events, and digital activations aimed at driving awareness and customer acquisition.The MoU reflects the shared intent of Dukhan Bank and Teyseer Group to explore potential areas of cooperation in a structured and non-committal manner, with any future engagements subject to further evaluation and formal agreement. 

Calling for enthusiasm for technology to be ‘guided by critical awareness and illuminated by moral insight’, Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, Monday highlighted the need to contemplate on the conditions that will secure the survival and continuity of the Arabic language.“Today, in the Arab world, we face a rare turning point, where resources alone no longer suffice. What is required today is the building of trust between minds and institutions and faith in the Arabic language, and in the creative power it has enabled through the ages. Yet, this must not obscure the truth that, today, Arabic fights its decisive battle on the frontlines of technology,” HH Sheikha Moza told a huge gathering at the ongoing Web Summit Qatar 2026.Her Highness noted that this battle is not over tools, but over meaning, identity, and the power to persist.“Should the Arabic language be defeated in this era, it will not be only a linguistic defeat, but a defeat for all that this language represents in terms of identity, culture, memory, spirit, and civilisation. In this context, it is imperative to contemplate the conditions that will secure the survival and continuity of the Arabic language,” urged, Her Highness.The QF chairperson highlighted that no nation rises without mobilising its energies, discourse, horizons, determination, and tools, and through everything that makes this rise a reality being nourished by collective will and sustained by self-driven growth.“Our conviction in safeguarding the distinct identity of our language, amid the unprecedented transformations the world is witnessing, is in harmony with our commitment to cultural diversity within the field of technology; for technology was never the child of a single civilisation, destined to remain its exclusive inheritance. Rather, solutions that emerge from diverse local needs, and the ‘cultural DNA’ of one community or another, can acquire global significance and influence when empowered by technology. They can evolve from isolated national or institutional efforts into genuine shared creativity that transcends regions, disciplines, and sectors,” she explained.HH Sheikha Moza highlighted the importance of long-term vision and investment in people and knowledge as the foundation of sustainable economic transformation."What you witness in Qatar is a transformation from oil and gas to a knowledge-based economy. I am convinced that, today, we are more ready than ever to be pioneers in the field of technology, and I believe that Qatar is the most reliable place for technology investment. Qatar has earned the trust of the world through its investment in education and scientific research, and demonstrated its credibility and neutrality at both regional and international level. Given its human and material capacities, its transparent legal framework, and its clear ethical standards, Qatar is well positioned to lead," she highlighted.Her Highness added: "It is a call to invest in a web of research built on global partnerships – not to humanise technology, but to humanise its uses." 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani expressed hope that Web Summit Qatar 2026 will help stimulate the exchange of expertise and boost the knowledge-based economy in the region. In a post on his official account on X, HH the Amir said that during his visit today to the Web Summit Qatar 2026, he was briefed on the advanced initiatives that this leading technological platform in the region is hosting, which will open new paths for innovation, partnerships and entrepreneurship in the digital field, hoping that the summit will contribute to stimulating the exchange of experiences and supporting the knowledge economy in the region. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani visited the Web Summit Qatar 2026 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) Sunday.  Having toured the booths of the participating national and international companies, His Highness the Amir was apprised of the latest innovations and cutting-edge technological systems in the areas of technology and artificial intelligence as well as entrepreneurship and digital transformation.  His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani listened to an explanation about the position of this summit as a global forum to share expertise through holding panel discussions and specialised workshops, representing solution platforms and modern technologies, in addition to public and private sector initiatives supporting the technology sector, with the participation of a contingent of keynote speakers and decision makers in this sector.

Web Summit Qatar has become a powerful catalyst for the country’s innovation-driven economy, reinforcing its position as a global platform for technology, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation, His Excellency Sheikh Jassim bin Mansour bin Jabor al-Thani, director of the Government Communications Office (GCO), said at a news conference at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre Sunday.  Speaking about the momentum shift, Sheikh Jassim said revenue from previous editions of the Web Summit exceeded QR800mn, including more than QR330mn in spending by individuals who travelled to Qatar to attend the summit. “More than 66,000 hotel nights were booked, with visitors staying an average of six days.  We expect these figures to go up in 2026 and we will continue building on this momentum,” said Sheikh Jassim. “Some of the goals we have set for 2026 event include expanding this conference and making it more comprehensive and more international.  We will host the participation of more than 1,600 startups at the Web Summit Qatar, which will be the largest gathering of startups in a single venue in the region,” he underlined. Sheikh Jassim also highlighted that, before hosting conferences in Doha, an extensive study is conducted to determine how such events can add real value to the country and the private sector. “The report we published last week confirms that this conference is a positive contributor to the economy.  Indicators such as hotel occupancy and visitor spending clearly show the significant benefits for the private sector and the strong activation of tourism facilities. “Since the first edition, we have seen nearly a 90% increase in startups, with an even greater rise in local startups this year. Qatari startups are now competing strongly with international companies, and this conference provides substantial value to the local economy through direct engagement with major global firms.  We remain committed to providing even greater support to Qatari startups,” he said. The GCO director said the summit will feature more than 600 speakers, investors, media figures and key decision-makers from around the world.  According to Sheikh Jassim, the most prominent Qatari speakers at the event include Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation; His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; Her Excellency Sheikha al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, and several Qatari ministers.  “We want to see how this conference generates an economic return for the country, local companies, and all participating companies,” Sheikh Jassim added. Addressing the press conference, Web Summit founder and CEO Paddy Cosgrave said the scale of the Doha event has exceeded initial expectations. “This year’s edition is the biggest event we have done so far in Qatar.  We had initially committed to Doha that in the first year we would bring 5,000 people together and by the fifth year the event would reach 12,000. That was the aspiration at the initial stage,” Cosgrave noted. “This year, we will have more than 30,000 attendees from all over the world and there will be a more diverse representation with many countries for the first time here.  There are attendees and startups representing countries such as Palestine, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Pakistan and The Netherlands among others,” he continued. “It is a true global group. We have more startups than ever before. Nearly 85% of the 1,600 startups at the event are from outside Qatar,” he highlighted. According to the Web Summit CEO, this edition of Web Summit Qatar will feature more investors than any previous edition, with an expanded programme of meetups and networking sessions throughout the four-day event.

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, chairperson of Qatar Foundation, attended the opening day of Jadal -- Al-Mujadilah Centre and Mosque for Women’s annual research summit -- designed to build and extend research networks on topics related to the contemporary challenges and lived realities of Muslim women around the world.Jadal was also attended by Her Excellency Buthaina bint Ali al-Jabr al-Nuaimi, Minister of Social Development and Family, and other distinguished guests and dignitaries. Held at Al-Mujadilah, Jadal has welcomed over 100 delegates from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, bringing together Muslim women scholars, researchers, and practitioners from across the globe and providing a home for international female Muslim scholarship. They will explore the summit’s 2026 strategic theme, ‘Muslim Women Navigating Theology, Ethics, and Society’.The summit will explore the role of Muslim women within the Islamic intellectual tradition and examines how they draw from this living heritage to navigate and respond to contemporary challenges. Through dialogue, research, and public engagement, Jadal continues to advance scholarship rooted in faith, lived experience, and global perspectives.The opening remarks were delivered by Dr Sohaira Siddiqui, executive director of Al-Mujadilah, who emphasised the importance of bridging scholarly knowledge and community life. She spoke on the need for research that is both rigourous and accessible, and for institutions that place Muslim women at the centre of knowledge production, ethical inquiry, and public engagement.She said, “Al-Mujadilah was founded on a simple but demanding premise: that religious knowledge is a form of stewardship. It carries responsibility to history, to ethics, and to the community it serves. It must be rigourous yet accessible, principled yet responsive, rooted in tradition while attentive to context.“Jadal was conceived not simply as a conference, but as a conversation, one that unfolds over time, across disciplines, and within our Muslim community.”During the summit, a new partnership between the Ministry of Social Development and Family and Al-Mujadilah was launched, marking a shared commitment to highlighting women’s contributions in Islam across history and in contemporary life. Rooted in awareness and renewed impact, the partnership will deliver a series of public initiatives aimed at deepening understanding of women’s roles in shaping knowledge, community, and society, grounded in faith, values, and lived experience.The collaboration was announced in the presence of HE al-Nuaimi, who shared reflections on women, community, and social development. ‘More Muslim’, a new narrative audio documentary podcast exploring the Muslim experience in all its complexity and depth, was also launched during Jadal.Blending storytelling and historical reflection, the series takes listeners on transhistorical journeys into themes that have shaped, and continue to shape, Muslim life in the modern world. This first season, produced by Al-Mujadilah, examines the lived experiences of Muslim women, sharing thoughtful, layered stories that illuminate faith, culture, and belonging beyond simplified narratives.Across the three days of Jadal 2026, panels and sessions are exploring themes including women’s agency and ethical leadership in Islamic history and civilization, as well as their normative authority and intellectual contributions from the inception of Islam to the present day. 

Doha Debates, an initiative of Qatar Foundation, examined the ethical, political and social ramifications of the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) during its latest “town hall”, held amid growing concerns that AI’s accelerating power could surpass human capability and escape meaningful control. Hosted at Multaqa, the Education City Student Center, the open forum brought together students, researchers and global experts to explore whether current institutions, ethical frameworks and governance systems are prepared for an era of fast-moving technological transformation. Moderated by Nadir Nahdi, the session featured strategic philosopher and transhumanist thinker Max More; Dr Roman Yampolskiy, professor of computer science and a leading expert on AI safety and security; and Nabiha Syed, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation and a prominent advocate for accountable technology governance. Approaching the issue from sharply different perspectives, the speakers debated whether advanced artificial intelligence represents an unprecedented opportunity for human flourishing or a profound threat to the core of human agency. Reflecting a proactionary outlook, Max More urged humanity to resist paralysis driven by fear, stressing the importance of innovation grounded in reason and reinforced by proportional safeguards. He warned that risk and opportunity are emerging simultaneously as AI capabilities expand. By contrast, Dr Roman Yampolskiy expressed deep scepticism about the possibility of maintaining real control over systems that exceed human intelligence, cautioning that governance structures may collapse as the intelligence gap widens and power becomes increasingly asymmetric. From a societal perspective, Nabiha Syed focused on how decisions around artificial intelligence are made, questioning who benefits and who bears the consequences when these technologies are deployed unevenly across societies. She called for stronger accountability, transparency and public participation, particularly at a time when fears are rising without a clear vision for maximising benefits while minimising harm. Students from universities across Qatar played an active role in shaping the discussion, raising questions related to work, human dignity, surveillance, the meaning of existence and the future of human control in a world where artificial intelligence may become inexpensive and widely accessible. Doha Debates announced that the town hall episode will be broadcast online on February 17. The organisation also revealed that a new episode of The Negotiators podcast, recorded during the Doha Forum and focused on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, will be released on February 2, followed by a new Doha Debates podcast episode on superheroes on February 10.

His Excellency the Governor of the Qatar Central Bank (QCB) and Chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani met Sunday with Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of General Atlantic William Ford, reports QNA. During the meeting, they discussed the latest developments in global finance and investment. 

Qatar's maritime sector began 2026 on a solid note with Hamad, Doha and Al Ruwais ports witnessing a year-on-year (y-o-y) growth, particularly in the container and bulk cargo segments this January, according to Mwani Qatar.As many as 230 ships had called on Qatar's three ports in January 2026, which was lower by 8.73% and 1.77% year-on-year and month-on-month respectively.Hamad Port's strategic geographical location offers opportunities to create cargo movement towards the upper Gulf, supporting countries such as Kuwait and Iraq and south towards Oman.The container movement through three ports amounted to 128,229 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), shooting up 3.17% and 15.75% year-on-year and month-on-month respectively in the review period.Hamad Port, the largest eco-friendly project in the region, had in January seen the berthing of container ship MSC REEF, one of the largest vessels in the MSC Cargo fleet, measuring 398.4m in length and 59m in width, with a capacity of 19,224 TEUs.Its arrival reflects the high operational efficiency of Hamad Port and its readiness to receive the world’s largest container ships.The container terminals have been designed to address the increasing trade volume, enhancing ease of doing business as well as supporting the achievement of economic diversification, which is one of the most important goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030.The general cargo handled through three ports amounted to 94,626 freight tonnes in January 2026, which however, shrank 33.56% and 24.36% on yearly and monthly basis respectively. The bulk cargo handled through the three ports amounted to as much 44,675 freight tonnes in January 2026.Hamad Port's multi-use terminal is designed to serve the supply chains for the RORO, grains and livestock.The container and cargo trends through the ports reflect the positive outlook for the country's non-oil private sector.In line with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030, Mwani Qatar continues to implement its ambitious strategy to enhance the maritime sector's contribution to diversifying the national economy and strengthening the county's position as a vibrant regional trade hub.The three ports were seen handling 26,150 livestock in January 2026, which showed 55.53% and 8.67% contraction year-on-year and month-on-month respectively.The three ports witnessed as many as 10,151 RORO in January 2026, which registered 20.95% and 21.05% shrinkage year-on-year and month-on-month respectively.Qatar's automobile sector has been witnessing stronger sales, notably in heavy equipment, private motorcycles and private vehicles, according to the data of the National Planning Council. 

Qatar Chamber first vice-chairman Mohamed bin Towar al-Kuwari held a meeting Sunday with Ruwa Jabr, CEO of the Palestinian Trade Centre (PalTrade), and her accompanying delegation.During the meeting, both sides reviewed economic and investment relations between Qatar and Palestine, as well as ways to enhance co-operation between the two countries.Al-Kuwari affirmed Qatar Chamber’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at strengthening commercial relations with Palestine and to assist Palestinian companies seeking to invest in the Qatari market across various economic sectors.Jabr said the delegation comprised several Palestinian companies participating in the Web Summit Qatar, noting that these companies operate in the Information Technology and advanced technology sectors.She emphasised PalTrade’s aspiration to enhance cooperation with the Qatar Chamber in the commercial and investment fields, and to organise joint business meetings between Qatari and Palestinian entrepreneurs, in a manner that contributes to expanding bilateral trade and investment relations.It is worth noting that PalTrade was established in 1998 as a non-profit organisation dedicated to leading export development as a driver of sustainable economic growth. PalTrade works to enhance trade competitiveness and support Palestinian companies by assessing their export readiness, building export capacity, and identifying new export markets.
