Qatar has expressed its condolences to the government of Kuwait and its people, on the death of two members of its armed forces while performing their national duties.In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) affirmed Qatar's full solidarity with Kuwait in this tragic loss and its support for all measures taken by Kuwait to preserve its sovereignty and security.  

South African anti-apartheid activist Mosiuoa Lekota, who broke away from the African ‌National Congress to found ​a new ‌political party, died in the ‌early ⁠hours ‌of Wednesday morning, ‌his party said in a statement. ⁠He was 77 years old.Lekota died after a period of illness and had stepped back from active politics. He was a close ​ally of former President Thabo Mbeki and served as South Africa's ‌defence minister from ⁠1999 to ​2008. Lekota, nicknamed "Terror" for ​his fearsome skills on the soccer pitch as young man, quit in protest at Mbeki's ousting and was voted off the ANC's National Executive Committee after repeated criticism of Mbeki's successor, Jacob ‌Zuma.He co-founded ‌the Congress ⁠of the People (COPE) party ⁠in 2008. ⁠COPE won roughly 7% of the vote in the first national election it contested, in 2009, but its vote share has ​been below 1% at every national election since then.Lekota worked as a student activist during the 1970s. He served jail time on Robben Island with the country's liberation hero Nelson Mandela. islam 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received a phone call on Tuesday from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. In the call, the Indonesian president expressed his country's full solidarity and support for the State of Qatar and its people in the face of the blatant Iranian aggression. He condemned any targeting of national territory and sovereignty in the region and emphasized the urgency of de-escalation and a return to negotiations. Meanwhile, HH the Amir expressed his deep appreciation for Indonesia's stance and support, noting that it reflects the strong bilateral relations and mutual understanding between the two countries. Both leaders also discussed current regional developments, underlining the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts as the way to contain the crisis and preserve regional security and stability.

More than 40mn people were under blizzard warnings in the northeast United States Monday, as a winter storm dumped shin-deep snow and officials in New York enforced a citywide travel ban. The so-called "Nor'easter" pummeled the region overnight, disrupting flights and leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power.  Thousands of homes and businesses were without power and officials, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, ordered residents to stay off the roads so emergency crews could clear the streets. Many schools were closed throughout the region. "I'm urging every New Yorker to please stay home," Mamdani said.  Authorities in neighbouring New Jersey and Rhode Island issued similar travel restrictions. Some were frustrated by the region's second major winter storm in weeks. "I'm sick of it. I don't want to see no more snow," Vincent Greer, a resident of Wildwood, New Jersey, said as he shoveled outside his building.  Meanwhile, at New York's Grand Central station, others were admiring the city blanketed in snow. "It's beautiful," Chris Crowell, 45, told AFP after a walk with a friend. "So much snow, it's just gorgeous. We did not expect to be out this long." The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that blizzard conditions and "crippling impacts" would continue in the northeast US for much of the day. As of 11am (1600 GMT), more than 5,500 flights in or out of the United States were canceled and hundreds more delayed, according to tracking service FlightAware.  New York's three major airports as well as Boston Logan Airport saw the most cancellations. At least four states – Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island – had seen 2’ (60cm) of snow by morning Monday.  The storm comes weeks after the region recovered from another devastating winter weather system that was linked to more than 100 deaths. Officials did not hold back in their public warnings ahead of the latest snowfall. "New York City has not faced a storm of this scale in the last decade," Mayor Mamdani said on Sunday after declaring a state of emergency. Some 15.1” (38cm) of snow were recorded in Central Park, the most at New York City's official reporting station from a single storm in over five years.  The United Nations, which is headquartered in the city, was closed Monday due to the storm. "The worst is yet to come," New York Governor Kathy Hochul told a briefing on Sunday, urging residents to stock up on groceries and medicines. She said she had activated 100 National Guard members to assist in Long Island, New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley – areas expected to bear the brunt of the heavy snow and coastal winds.  In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu warned of a storm of "historic proportions" and closed all public schools and municipal buildings. "We ask everyone to plan ahead, stay safe and warm, and stay off the roads to help our public works and public safety efforts," she said. Citing the severe weather, Boston's transit authority said that subway, bus and rail services would be limited, and ferry services canceled. Snowploughs were deployed across the northeast US as officials sought to reduce prolonged disruption from the storm.  Major cities including New York, Philadelphia and Boston advertised dedicated warming centres for people caught outside in the cold. In an update on Sunday, the agency said that despite its ongoing funding lapse, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema)'s disaster-response work continues uninterrupted, including staff travel, emergency operations and critical assistance for people affected by active disasters, with life safety and property protection remaining top priorities. Last week, Reuters reported that the Trump administration had ordered the Fema to suspend the deployment of hundreds of aid workers to disaster-affected areas around the country while the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is shut down.

A delegation from the Ministry of Finance recently visited the National Center for Privatisation and PPP in Riyadh, aiming to review the centre’s experience and benefit from its expertise in privatisation and public-private partnerships (PPP). The visit included a presentation of the national privatisation strategy, governance models, and operational mechanisms for projects, alongside discussions on lessons learned and ways to enhance ongoing and collaborative cooperation between the two sides, the Ministry of Finance said in social media handle X.

Ons Jabeur, the Tunisian tennis player and two-time Wimbledon runner-up, has joined Qatar Foundation (QF) as the international ambassador of its Creating Pathways programme, with tennis introduced as the initiative’s final sport.Tennis joins track and field, basketball, volleyball, and fencing in the Creating Pathways programme, which was launched as part of QF’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 legacy plans. The five-sport programme aims to expand opportunities for women and girls, develop local athletic talent, and create sustainable pathways from grassroots participation to high-performance sport. A key component of this programme is identifying role models for young girls from Qatar and the region to relate and look up to.Jabeur is the first Arab and African woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final and the highest-ranked Arab and African player in history. Her success has inspired millions, broken barriers, and expanded what young people – especially girls – believe is possible. Beyond the court, she is a powerful advocate for women in sport and for humanitarian causes.Speaking about why she joined QF’s Creating Pathways programme, Jabeur said: “I was inspired by the programme’s focus on empowering young people, especially girls, and creating real opportunities through sport and education. It reflects my own journey and values, and being part of it allows me to give back in a meaningful way.“I hope girls see that sport can build confidence, discipline, and belief in themselves. Through tennis, they can discover their potential and feel empowered to dream big on the court and beyond. I want to help create a future where girls have equal opportunities, feel confident and supported, and are free to dream big, both in sport and in life, knowing they truly belong.”The programme is open to girls aged under 16, and in addition to on-court development, it takes a holistic approach, educating young people on the importance of regular exercise, proper nutrition and overall wellbeing.“Inspirational sporting figures like Ons Jabeur epitomise what it means, and what it takes, to be a champion in both sport and life,” said Alanoud al-Mesnad, executive director, Women’s and Girls’ Sports, QF. “The stories and successes of Ons and all our program ambassadors educate, motivate, and energise our Creating Pathways participants as they pursue their goals of reaching sport’s elite level.”During this week’s National Sport Day, Jabeur led several activations at Education City celebrating sport, as part of QF’s contribution to the nationwide showcase of the benefit of sporting participation and active, healthy living.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani met at his office in the Amiri Diwan Wednesday with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani as he visited the country.  They discussed co-operation between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen it, in addition to discussing developments in the region and efforts to reduce tensions and enhance regional security as well as a number of regional and international issues of common concern. **media[415641]**The meeting was attended by His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, His Excellency Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed al Khulaifi, and a number of senior officials. From the Iranian side, it was attended by Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri, Assistant Foreign Minister Alibek, and a number of senior officials.
