Switzerland's Audrey Werro clocked a meet best to win the 800m on home soil at the Lausanne Diamond League on Friday, but fell well short of the world record. The newly-crowned European champion, the third fastest ever in the women's two-lap race, is aiming to break the 1min 53.28sec run by Jarmila Kratochvilova of then-Czechoslovakia in 1983.It remains the oldest world record in track and field, albeit one that is highly contested having come during a period when systemic doping of athletes was prevalent. Kratochvilova, however, never failed a doping test. Unlike the European champs, the Diamond League features wavelight technology, trackside lighting that enables runners to see at what pace they are running.Werro also had Myrte van der Schoot as her pacemaker, but depite the Dutchwoman clocking 54.64sec for the opening 400m, the 22-year-old Swiss could not maintain the pace, ultimately winning in a meet record of 1:55.33. Femke Broeders-Bol, the former two-time world 400m hurdles champion who won European bronze behind Werro and Britain's Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson in Birmingham, came second in a national record of 1:55.41.World and Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi claimed victory in the men's 800m in 1:42.19 ahead of Algeria's Djamel Sedjati, the two-time world silver medallist who won bronze at the Paris Games. It was a first Diamond League 800m win of the season for the Kenyan after two second places and a fourth-placed finish in London last month. He did, however, set a new world best for the non-Olympic distance of 1,000m in Monaco."I had a battle, especially over the final 100 metres, but I felt very strong and I'm happy to have won the race," said Wanyonyi, with Canada's 2023 world champ Marco Arop finishing fourth. Hunt second in 200 Britain's Amy Hunt, who won a historic four golds at the recently-concluded European championships, had to be happy with second behind American Kayla White in the 200m. White won in 22.18sec, with Hunt holding off Nigeria's Favour Ofili in a photo-finish at 22.32.Jamaica's Shericka Jackson, the two-time former world champion in the event, pulled up with 70 metres of the race to run. Hunt acknowledged that she had been "tired before the race and my pre-competition felt pretty stiff".Botswana's Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo dominated the men's 200m, winning in 19.87sec in a dominant display. Like Hunt, there was also no joy for Italy's Andy Diaz Fernandez, who went out to the third longest distance ever, of 18.15m, to win gold at the Euros in Birmingham. He finished third in Switzerland with a best of 17.20m, Portugal's Pedro Pichardo winning with 17.44.Pre-empting Werro, there were also meet records for American Masai Russell in the 100m hurdles (12.27sec) and teammate Rai Benjamin, who has been focused on the 400m flat this season, in the 400m hurdles (46.67), beating Edwin Moses' mark of 47.14 from 1981."It was my first 400m hurdles race of the season, so it was rusty as hell, but I'm happy with it," said Benjamin, the reigning Olympic and world hurdles champion. "I feel really good, and I have a flat 400m at the Silesia Diamond League in Chorzow on Sunday. "I wanted to do things differently this year, have some fun and try some interesting things." 

Newly promoted Lusail will begin their first Doha Bank Stars League campaign, determined to prove they belong among Qatar’s elite when they face title contenders Al Rayyan today. The opening-round match at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, kicking off at 7.30pm, marks a historic occasion for Lusail after the club won the Second Division shield last season and secured promotion to the top flight for the first time. Head coach Emanuel Mesquita said the achievement had created excitement, but insisted the newcomers were not entering the league merely to make up the numbers. “We are extremely happy to be among the best teams in Qatar and to have the opportunity to compete against them,” the Portuguese coach said at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference. “We are very excited to begin the campaign and show what we are capable of.” Mesquita acknowledged the scale of Lusail’s first test, describing Al Rayyan as regular challengers for the championship. However, he said his side had avoided changing its approach or allowing the opposition’s stature to disrupt preparations. “We are very excited to start the league against Al Rayyan. It is a very difficult match, as everyone knows,” he said. “Al Rayyan are contenders and candidates to win the title every year.” The coach added that Lusail had prepared for the fixture in the same disciplined manner used throughout pre-season. “We did not do anything special regarding Al Rayyan,” Mesquita explained. “We followed our usual preparation for every match. We paid attention to what they do and what we know about them, and we tried to prepare in the best way possible so we can perform at our highest level.” That measured approach reflects a team seeking to balance the emotion of a landmark debut with the practical demands of facing one of Qatar’s established football powers. Lusail media officer Saud al-Mudahka said the club had worked hard to reach this stage, with a series of friendly matches helping the players build readiness and confidence ahead of the new campaign. “We worked hard to reach this point and played many friendly matches,” al-Mudahka said. “The first match against Al Rayyan will be very difficult, but there is confidence between the players and the coach to select a good squad and make a strong debut for the fans and everyone at Lusail.” For Lusail, today’s encounter represents more than an opening fixture. It is the first opportunity to translate last season’s success into a statement at the highest level. Mesquita said the club’s objective was clear: “Now that we have reached the Doha Bank Stars League, we want to prove to everyone that we deserve to be here and compete among the best.”

Newly-crowned European 800m champion Audrey Werro will turn her attention from her stunning triumph in Birmingham last week to athletics' oldest world record on home soil in Lausanne on Friday.Werro outgunned Britain's Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson for continental gold in a championship record of 1min 54.81sec.The 22-year-old Swiss athlete has twice broken the 1:54 barrier this season, becoming the first woman to do so since 1983.That was the year that Jarmila Kratochvilova of then-Czechoslovakia ran the two-lap race in 1:53.28.It remains the oldest world record in track and field, albeit one that is highly contested having come during a period when systemic doping of athletes was prevalent. Kratochvilova, however, never failed a doping test.There is no Hodgkinson for the Diamond League meet in Lausanne, but Kenya's world champion Lilian Odira and Dutchwoman Femke Broeders-Bol, who won European bronze behind Werro and Hodgkinson in Birmingham, will offer some stiff competition."I want to win in front of the Lausanne crowd," said Werro.Unlike the European champs, the Diamond League features wavelight technology, trackside lighting that enables runners to see at what pace they are running.Werro will also have Myrte van der Schoot as her pacemaker."The first 400 metres in 55.5sec, that's what we had asked the pacemaker to do at the Diamond League in Paris, and I think that makes a lot of sense," she said."I don't want to put pressure on myself about it. It's my dream to get it one day, but above all, I want to run fast."Werro's path to European gold was not straightforward as she was brought crashing to the ground in her semi-final after being clipped."I knew that I needed to finish the race in order to maybe be in the final, so I just decided to get up and finish the the race," she said."It was a little bit harder because of everything going on. So, for the drama, I just deleted all my social media, and yeah, it was a little bit hard being in the final without standard qualification."But I did some work with my mental coach for the final, and then everything was just fine. It worked really well."The fall and subsequent gold, Werro said, had been "really good for confidence. It was a hard fall, but it gave me energy".Beyond expectationsBroeders-Bol continued her astonishing transition from the 400m hurdles, an event in which she is a two-time former world champion, with an 800m bronze."This year is going better than I could expect for the first year," she said."It's a lot faster and, technically, I'm already a lot better than we expected, so it's really fun, and I'm really happy."Her podium run saw Broeders-Bol equal the Dutch national record of 1:55.54 set by Ellen van Langen in 1991. She also anchored the Dutch women's quartet to victory in the 4x400m relay."After Paris, I was very close, and I really didn't expect it that day," she said of that record."So then it started to be a bit in my head, like maybe I can do it this year. But at the beginning of the year, it wasn't at all on the cards to think about it."It's very special to equal it because Ellen is a legend in our country."Turning to Friday's race, Broeders-Bol said her tactics would not change.Her aim, the 26-year-old said, was to "just see if every race I can improve things that could be better from a previous one"."I will just enjoy. I will see what the race brings, and at 200 metres, find your way and keep going." 

Al Wakrah and Qatar SC played out a 2-2 draw while Al Rayyan edged past debutants Lusail 1-0 as the new season of Qatar Stars League kicked off on Thursday.At the Lusail stadium, Qatar SC's Aron Gunnarsson scored the first goal of the new season, rifling home a rebound from Niall Mason’s shot inside the final third to give his side the lead in the 18th minute.Al Wakrah created several opportunities to equalse during a lengthy spell but failed to convert, with Almahdi Ali heading wide from the right side of the box in the 37th minute after a set-piece delivery by Luis Alberto.The Blue Wave finally levelled in first-half stoppage time through Redouane Berkane to ensure the sides went into the break on equal terms.Al Wakrah then returned post break to grab lead in the 67th minute when Amine Zouhzouh converted from the penalty spot after Fallou Diouf’s challenge on Berkane.Qatar SC hit back twelve minutes later as Bruno Tabata restored parity, capitalizing on a goalkeeping error by Mohammed Al Bakri to slot home from close range.Both sides tried to force the pace in remaining time but in the end had share the spoils. **media[481653]** Al Rayyan edge LusailAt the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, the newly-promoted Lusail had their hopes of fetching an equaliser raised in the 88th minute when substitute Tiago Geralnik appeared to have been flipped from behind by Al Rayyan’s Jassem Gaber inside the box. The referee however ruled out a penalty indicating that the player may have tripped, much to Al Rayyan’s relief.Al Rayyan’s only goal was scored by Gabriel Pereira in the 43rd minute of the match. The Brazilian picked on a good cross from Gregore to dash into the box from the right and make a left-footed strike. His shot beat a diving goalkeeper at the right bottom corner.Lusail however continued to show good defence as they foiled two attempts in the second session.At the hour mark, a Roger Guedes shot was cut off in front of the goal while four minutes later, Pereira missed a good chance as he shot wide off the left post with only the goalkeeper to beat.Lusail goalkeeper Arsha Shakouri gave a good account of himself making some good saves. Lusail were more attacking in the latter stages of second half and a good corner kick saw a connect being missed by inches, high and centre in front of the goal.Earlier in the 23rd minute, Lusail’s Hamidreza Firouzi made a good dribble to get into the striking zone but his assist was shot just wide past the right post.While Lusail were incisive at times their inexperience showed through against a strong Al Rayyan, who themselves were a bit rusty losing out on chances to double their lead.After the match, Rayyan’s Jassim Jaber was delighted his team had achieved the most important objective of securing victory and the first three points.He said the match was not easy, as Lusail looked strong and well organised, while Al Rayyan missed several chances in the second half.The midfielder added that after winning their opening league match, Al Rayyan will now turn their attention to their next game against Al Wakrah next Thursday.Today, Al Gharafa will play Al Shahania at the Khalifa International Stadium at 5:15pm while Al Arabi will meet Al Shamal at Al Thumama Stadium at 7:30pm.The Big guns will be in action tomorrow. Al Sadd, the competition's most successful club with 19 titles and the reigning champions for the past three seasons, will begin their title defence against Al Ahli at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.The champions will look to make a strong start under new Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu, who replaced Italian Roberto Mancini. Al Sadd will rely on the likes of Akram Afif, Brazilian duo Roberto Firmino and Claudinho, and Spanish striker Rafa Mujica.Al Sadd held their pre-season camp in Austria, where Lucescu worked on preparing the squad for the new campaign, with the team also targeting a strong run in the AFC Champions League.Former champions Al Duhail will face Al Sailiya at Al Bayt Stadium. Al Duhail had a poor season last season, finishing fifth and will be aiming for a stronger campaign as they seek to return to the upper reaches of the table. The Red Knights completed their pre-season preparations in Amsterdam and will be eager to make a strong start.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the draw mechanism for the league stage of the AFC Champions League Elite 2026-27, with the draw scheduled for August 18 at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.The new season will feature 32 clubs in an expanded format for the first time since the competition was restructured, with 16 teams from the West region and 16 from the East. The clubs in each region will be divided into four levels, with each team playing eight matches against eight different opponents, including four at home and four away.The top eight teams from each region will advance to the round of 16, which will be held from March 1 to 17. The competition will then move to Saudi Arabia for the combined finals, featuring the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final from April 23 to May 1.In the West region, the first level includes defending champions Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia, Al Ain of the UAE, Qatar's Al Sadd and Iran's Esteghlal.The second level features Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, Uzbekistan's Nasaf Qarshi, Iraq's Al Quwa Al Jawiya and UAE side Shabab Al Ahli.The third level consists of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal, Qatar's Al Gharafa, Iran's Tractor and UAE side Al Wasl.The fourth level includes Saudi Arabia's Al Qadsiah and Al Ittihad, Qatar's Al Shamal and Uzbekistan's Pakhtakor.According to the AFC's draw mechanism, clubs will not be assigned eight opponents individually. Instead, the draw will use a fixed grid comprising four columns - A, B, C and D - in the West region.The four first-level clubs will be drawn into positions A1, B1, C1 and D1, followed by the second-level clubs into A2, B2, C2 and D2, and the same process will be applied to the third and fourth levels.The AFC said the draw will protect clubs from the same national association by ensuring they are not placed in adjacent columns, preventing them from facing each other in the league stage.The principle of sporting fairness will also be applied to limit the repetition of home or away match patterns between clubs from specific national associations.An electronic draw system will apply these restrictions and prevent any conflicts that could interrupt the draw process.
