Qatar National Library (QNL) announced that it will organize a series of diverse cultural activities and events during the month of December to celebrate Qatar National Day, bringing the community together to honor the country's heritage and values.QNL said that highlights include the 'Dakka' and 'Our Heritage, Our Pride' festivals, a heritage seminar, and family-friendly events that reflect Qatar's rich history and its forward-looking vision.The celebrations kick off on Dec. 6 with the Dakka Festival, a vibrant tribute to QNL inspired by the traditional Dakka, a long seat symbolizing unity and togetherness.The library invited families to enjoy cultural performances and interactive activities as part of the Cultural Mosaic series, which highlights the beauty of Islamic culture and the global diversity that enriches the cultural landscape.On Dec. 8, QNL's Heritage Library will host a special seminar, 'The History of Qatar and the Arabian Gulf Through Archival Documents.' The event will explore key moments in Qatar's history and its cultural influence in the Gulf and Arab world. An elite of historians will speak at the seminar, including Dr. Hamad Al Ghadeed from Qatar University, Dr. Philippe Petriat from Sorbonne University, and Dr. Abdulrahman Alebrahim from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, as they will analyze archival records to shed light on pivotal events in Qatar's past.The National Day celebrations continue on Dec. 13 with Our Heritage, Our Pride, an outdoor family event that celebrates Qatari culture, where visitors will be able to experience cultural tents, interactive workshops, and traditional storytelling. Children will also have the chance to meet Ramli, the Library's beloved mascot.On Dec. 14, architect Fatma Ibrahim Al Sahlawi will present An Architectural Vision Through Innovative Qatari Eyes, discussing Qatar's urban transformations and a future-focused vision centered on innovation and architectural excellence.On Dec. 15, artist Haifa Al Khuzai will lead Cultural Mosaic: Qatari Identity Through Art, a hands-on workshop that uses creative expression to explore Qatari heritage and identity. Participants will create artistic pieces that blend traditional and contemporary styles in a celebration of cultural craftsmanship.In addition to National Day events, QNL will offer a range of activities throughout December. QNL's Winter Camp, running from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1, will offer children and young adults a mix of storytelling, creative workshops, STEM programs, and 3D modeling sessions designed to inspire curiosity and learning over the winter break.

Qatar begin their quest for Arab Cup glory on Monday against Palestine at Al Bayt Stadium in the opening match of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, in Group A alongside Tunisia and Syria.Qatar enter the tournament seeking their first Arab Cup title in their fourth appearance, after finishing runners-up in 1998, third in 2021 and fourth on their debut in 1985. The team comes into the competition with high confidence after securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by topping their Asian play-off group in Doha ahead of Oman and the UAE.Preparations included a local training camp during the November international window, featuring a friendly match against Zimbabwe. Head coach Julen Lopetegui said the Arab Cup represents a major competitive test and a key stage in the team's World Cup preparations, stressing the importance of a strong opening performance against a well-organized Palestinian side.Qatar will rely on a balanced squad blending experience and youth. The 23-man roster features key players including Akram Afif, Mohammed Muntari, Edmilson Junior and goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham. Afif remains the team's main attacking threat after his outstanding display at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, where he won both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball.Several players will miss the tournament, most notably all-time top scorer Almoez Ali due to injury. Ahmed Al Rawi and Ahmed Al Janahi are also sidelined, while Boualem Khoukhi, Pedro Miguel and Karim Boudiaf were left out as part of Lopetegui's squad restructuring.Palestine secured qualification after defeating Libya on penalties following a goalless draw in Doha and will be looking to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their sixth appearance. The team, coached by Ehab Abu Jazar, conducted a training camp in Spain before assembling in Doha for final preparations.Featuring several players active in the Qatari and Egyptian leagues, Palestine head into the opener determined to challenge the hosts before a large home crowd at Al Bayt Stadium.

Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council has launched the Qatar Social Sciences RDI Community, a flagship initiative that brings together researchers, innovators, and policymakers working in the filed of social sciences and humanities. As part of QRDI Council’s National RDI Communities programme, this community aims to foster collaboration, bridge sectors, and generate evidence-based solutions to Qatar’s most pressing societal challenges. Launched as a pre-event to World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE 12), the community also sets the stage for deeper conversations on the role of research, innovation, and development in shaping the future of education and society. The Qatar Social Sciences RDI Community was launched at a dedicated event that brought together more than 350 attendees, including high-level government officials, academic leaders, industry experts, and representatives of civil society. Opening remarks were delivered by Omar Ali al-Ansari, Secretary General of the QRDI Council. The programme also featured welcoming remarks with Her Excellency Lolwah bint Rashid bin Mohammed al-Khater, Minister of Education and Higher Education, who emphasised the need for social sciences to play a more prominent role in shaping policies and national development strategies. The launch event included a keynote address, interactive roundtables, and a panel discussion exploring how research, innovation, and policy can align to drive social progress. Senior representatives from QRDI Council, academia, and government engaged in dialogue on advancing equitable education, mental well-being, inclusive governance, and social cohesion through interdisciplinary collaboration. This community is anchored in the Third National Development Strategy, which identifies the social sciences as a foundational pillar of Qatar’s innovation ecosystem. By bridging gaps between research, policy, and innovation, the community will serve as a trusted space for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and the co-creation of evidence-informed solutions. Al-Ansari highlighted: “This community is built on a central and simple idea: Innovation must serve people, and that society guides and determines the course of innovation. Through this Community, we are empowering researchers, government entities and industry partners to come together, share perspectives, and shape solutions that contribute to a more inclusive, knowledge and innovation-based economy.” The key objectives of the Qatar Social Sciences RDI Community are to connect diverse stakeholders to build a shared understanding of Qatar’s most pressing social issues, generate evidence-informed recommendations that can influence policymaking, elevate the role of social sciences within the national development agenda and translate academic research into real-world impact through practical applications and cross-sector collaboration.

Qatar Foundation’s Awsaj Academy marked the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People through a cultural and humanitarian event that brought together its students and several Palestinians evacuated from Gaza. The initiative sought to deepen awareness of Palestinian heritage and highlight the stories of resilience demonstrated by the people of the Gaza Strip. Held at Awsaj Academy’s theatre and surrounding outdoor areas, the event drew a wide audience of students’ families, the school community, and visitors. It offered an integrated blend of cultural expression and humanitarian reflection, providing students with a meaningful opportunity to explore Palestinian culture and engage with the lived experiences of Gaza’s residents within an educational context. The programme included artistic and cultural performances such as the traditional Palestinian ‘Dabka’, alongside an exhibition of artwork, crafts, and handmade pieces representing Palestinian identity. The outdoor spaces featured sculptures symbolising Palestine, as well as booths showcasing heritage products and photographs documenting the humanitarian realities faced by Gazans. Maryam al-Subaie, events and activities coordinator and teacher of Qatari History and Heritage at Awsaj Academy, underscored the importance of such initiatives, saying: “At Awsaj Academy, we are committed to ensuring that educational activities serve as platforms that strengthen our students’ humanitarian awareness and connect them to global issues through direct experience. “The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People provided a valuable opportunity to instill the values of empathy and responsibility, and to broaden students’ understanding of what communities around the world are going through. “This event also highlighted how art, culture, and storytelling can serve as bridges that bring people together and promote respect for human diversity. We believe that such activities strengthen our students’ sense of belonging and humanity, broaden their perspectives, and nurture their social and emotional development.” Al-Subaie emphasised that the significance of the event extended beyond celebrating heritage, as it helped instill a sense of responsibility in students and expand their understanding of their role in addressing humanitarian causes. “We want our students to understand that solidarity is not merely a momentary stance but a value expressed through action, listening, engagement, and understanding,” she said. “This reflects the essence of holistic education at QF, education that broadens perspectives, deepens awareness, and cultivates students’ moral and ethical consciousness,” added al-Subaie.

The Qatar Financial Markets Authority (QFMA) has come out with a slew of measures, including doing away with multiple advisors for listing and determining the reference price through pre-listing auction in direct listing, as part of simplifying the procedures and attracting foreign investments.His Excellency Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, Governor of the Qatar Central Bank and chairman of QFMA has issued QFMA’s board decision No 8 of 2025 concerning the offering and listing, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) rules.The issuance of the new rules comes as part of the state's drive to stimulate the attraction of foreign investments, and in light of the QFMA's ongoing efforts to continuously review and develop the legislative structure regulating the Qatari capital market in line with the best practices and international standards.The QFMA merged all rules and regulations related to the offering and listing process, such as (rights issues, sukuk and bonds, funds units, book building and share buyback) into unified rules, while added a separate chapter for M&As.On offerings and subscriptions, the QFMA developed the book-building mechanism and required a single offering and listing advisor instead of the previous multiple roles (offering advisor, listing advisor); while in the case of listing, it added a mechanism to determine the reference price through a pre-listing auction in the case of direct listing.On sukuk and bonds, the QFMA made it mandatory for the company to appoint a trustee to protect the rights of investors in such instruments.The QFMA stipulated the requirement of two years before requesting the transfer to the main market from the junior bourse.About disclosure and transparency; the QFMA made it mandatory to disclose in both Arabic and English. It set additional controls and procedures in case of postponing disclosure to align with international practices and obliging companies to keep lists of insiders and prevent their trading during the ban period.In the case of restrictions of founders and major shareholders, the QFMA said in the direct listing on the second market, the sale of up to 30% was allowed during the first year.On M&A, it said the acquisition articles shall apply in the case of the acquisition of shares of a listed company (not in the case of the acquisition of a private company) and regulating the reverse acquisition mechanism. It made it mandatory of the compulsory offer when 90% is reached (minority consent is not required).As per the new rules, the REITs (real estate investment trusts) have been allowed to borrow up to 50% of gross asset value.The key objectives are simplifying the procedures for listing and offering companies on Qatari financial markets and facilitating them for the issuers, enhancing the growth and diversity of the national economy and contributing to the advancement of our capital markets to developed markets, and promoting dealers' confidence, developing regulations and procedures, and providing a safe and sustainable investment environment."Such new rules will contribute to addressing any challenges that may face the Qatari capital sector, and will contribute to enhancing the growth and diversity of the national economy, as well as contribute to enhancing the advancing of our capital markets to the rank of developed markets, especially in light of the development of the Qatari capital market and the qualitative leaps it has achieved over the past few years," Sheikh Bandar said.Dr Tamy bin Ahmad al-Binali, chief executive officer of QFMA, said it had presented the rules for public consultation in April last year, inviting all participants dealing in the Qatari financial markets to review the proposed new draft rules, express opinions on its contents, and provide their comments and suggestions.The desired objectives of any proposed legislative draft to develop the legislative structure of the Qatari capital market will only be achieved through fruitful co-operation and continuous support and assistance from all entities subject to the QFMA's jurisdiction, professionals dealing in the financial markets and companies listed therein, as well as investors dealing in the capital markets, according to him. 

His Excellency the Qatar Central Bank (QCB) Governor​, Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, met separately Sunday with Senior Advisor at Goldman Sachs Group, Rishi Sunak; and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Group, Hans Dieter Potsch. The meetings discussed the latest global financial and investment developments. His Excellency Sheikh Bandar also met with Gernot Dollner, Chairman of Audi AG, to discuss key developments in global finance and investment. The discussion focused on international financial trends and investment opportunities, reflecting Qatar's ongoing engagement with leading global companies to stay abreast of market dynamics. 

Market EyeThe Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) Sunday opened the week weak with its key index losing as much as 30 points and capitalisation eroding about QR2bn, dragged mainly down by realty, consumer goods and transport sectors.The foreign funds were increasingly net sellers as the 20-stock Qatar Index shed 0.28% to 10,615.07 points, although it touched an intraday high of 10,668 points.The Arab individuals’ weakened net buying had its influence on the main market, whose year-to-date gains truncated to 0.42%.About 56% of the traded constituents were in the red in the main bourse, whose capitalisation melted QR1.87bn or 0.29% to QR634.86bn, mainly on small cap segments.The Arab institutions’ lower net buying had its marginal impact on the main market, which saw as many as 0.03mn exchange traded funds (sponsored by AlRayan Bank and Doha Bank) valued at QR0.07mn trade across 12 deals.The local retail investors continued to be net sellers but with lesser intensity in the main bourse, whose trade turnover and volumes were on the decline.The Islamic index was seen declining slower than the other indices of the main market, which saw no trading of treasury bills.The domestic institutions were increasingly bullish in the main bourse, which saw no trading of sovereign bonds.The Total Return Index shed 0.28%, the All Share Index by 0.25% and the All Islamic Index by 0.12% in the main market.The real estate sector index tanked 2%, consumer goods and services (0.77%), transport (0.77%) and banks and financial services (0.41%); while insurance shot up 2.31%, telecom (0.54%) and industrials (0.24%).As many as 17 stocks gained, while 29 declined and six were unchanged.Major shakers in the main market included Barwa, Baladna, Medicare Group, Al Mahhar Holding, Gulf Warehousing, QNB, Widam Food, Gulf International Services, Ezdan and Nakilat.Nevertheless, Qatar General Insurance and Reinsurance, Qatar National Cement, Meeza, Aamal Company, Qatar Insurance, Estithmar Holding, QLM and Ooredoo were among the movers in the main bourse. In the venture market, Techno Q saw its shares appreciate in value.The foreign funds’ net selling increased substantially to QR16.26mn compared to QR6.16mn the previous trading day.The Arab individual investors’ net buying declined noticeably to QR0.16mn against QR2.12mn on November 27.The Arab institutions’ net buying weakened marginally to QR0.04mn compared to QR0.05mn last Thursday.However, the domestic funds’ net buying rose considerably to QR15.63mn against QR9.38mn the previous trading day.The foreign individuals turned net buyers to the tune of QR2.75mn compared with net sellers of QR0.06mn on November 27.The Gulf institutions’ net buying strengthened marginally to QR1.92mn against QR1.62mn last Thursday.The Gulf individuals’ net buying grew perceptibly to QR0.54mn compared to QR0.04mn the previous trading day.The local retail investors’ net profit booking eased markedly to QR4.8mn against QR6.98mn on November 27.The main market saw a 44% contraction in trade volumes to 95.55mn shares, 48% in value to QR209.33mn and 43% in deals to 10,613.In the venture market, a total of 0.17mn equities valued at QR0.37mn changed hands across 61 transactions. 

Ericsson and Ooredoo Qatar have completed a proof of concept (PoC) for the Automated Energy Saver energy-performance feature, showcasing Ericsson's software solutions for Ericsson 5G Advanced Energy Efficiency and Management.The Automated Energy Saver functionality dynamically optimises resources and energy consumption based on real-time data related to traffic demand and network conditions. This functionality activates or deactivates radio resources based on user throughput, ensuring energy is saved during both low-traffic periods and times of high demand. It exemplifies intent-driven operations that achieve a balance between energy efficiency and user experience.In a span of one week, the PoC achieved a notable reduction of approximately 15% in radio power consumption while maintaining a consistent and high-quality user experience. The success of the PoC is a significant step towards the deployment of Ericsson 5G Advanced on Ooredoo Qatar’s network, reinforcing the progress towards the Qatar National Vision 2030 and supporting goals for more sustainable and intelligent connectivity.Hicham Siblini, Chief Technology and Infrastructure Officer at Ooredoo Qatar, said: “The proof of concept of Ericsson’s Automated Energy Saver represents Ooredoo Qatar’s journey towards a more advanced, intelligent and automated network. By enabling real-time intent-driven automation for more sustainable operations, Ooredoo will benefit from strengthened network intelligence while better serving our customers.”Petra Schirren, President Gulf at Ericsson Europe, Middle East & Africa, said: “Our proof of concept with Ooredoo Qatar shows the capabilities of Ericsson 5G Advanced and intent-based automation to drive energy-efficiency and deliver enhanced network performance.“Ericsson’s Automated Energy Saver functionality applies automation to optimise energy consumption based on real-time data while ensuring a seamless user experience. This progress helps build networks ready for rising capacity needs and long-term sustainability.”Ericsson and Ooredoo Qatar have an established history of joint projects, including nationwide 5G deployment and microwave backhaul and the earlier roll-out of the Ericsson Smart Connected Site aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The collaboration reflects strong alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030, contributing to national digitalisation and environmental goals. 

Two students in the Media Department at Qatar University (QU) completed two graduation projects aimed at serving the community and promoting awareness and positive behaviour among young people.Student Mohammed al-Marri launched the "Don't Speed, Take It Easy... We Want You Safe" campaign to reduce speeding accidents on roads, which are among the leading causes of traffic accidents that result in loss of life and property, and significantly impact families and society.The campaign focuses on spreading a culture of safe driving, emphasising that arriving late is better than risking one's life, especially among young people who represent a large segment of car users.Student Ibrahim Mohammed Saleh completed the "Camp with awareness" campaign to promote sustainable camping and environmental awareness among young people and the Qatari community by encouraging environmentally friendly practices such as litter collection, protecting natural plants, and committing to using alternative energy sources. The campaign aims to instill values of environmental responsibility and promote sustainable behaviours in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.They told Arabic daily Arrayah that these projects highlight the vital role of youth in proposing innovative solutions to societal problems and transforming academic knowledge into practical initiatives that serve the environment and road safety, contributing to building a conscious, sustainable, and safe society for all citizens and residents of Qatar.Student Ibrahim Mohammed Saleh, from the Department of Media at QU, whose project, titled “A Quality Camping to Preserve Our Qatar,” aims to spread the culture of sustainable camping and promote environmental awareness among the youth. Ibrahim said that the campaign focuses on the importance of preserving the sites after the end of camping, the sustainability of alternative energy sources, the commitment to protecting natural plants, and avoiding pollution in all its forms. 

As part of its humanitarian efforts to assist communities impacted by natural disasters, Qatar Charity (QC) has signed a Contingency Project Co-operation Agreement (CPCA) with Unicef Pakistan.The agreement aims to strengthen emergency response systems and ensure the timely delivery of relief services during crises across the country.The partnership focuses on implementing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions alongside Nutrition services during emergencies, with a strong emphasis on supporting vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.Under this collaboration, QC and Unicef launched a Nutrition in Emergencies initiative in four districts of Punjab: Rajanpur, Jhang, Muzaffargarh, and Multan, to support those affected by the 2025 floods. The initiative seeks to improve access to treatment for acutely malnourished children as well as pregnant and lactating women.The programme includes the provision of micronutrient supplements for children aged 6–59 months and breastfeeding women, along with counselling on maternal nutrition, nurturing care, early childhood development, and Infant and Young Child Feeding practices. It also incorporates capacity building, co-ordination, and information management to strengthen emergency nutrition systems.A WASH emergency project has been activated to assist flood-affected communities. It aims to provide climate-resilient sanitation facilities for 20,000 people, including toilets, bathing areas, and washing points designed to be culturally sensitive, gender-appropriate and disability-inclusive.Additionally, 100,000 people will benefit from improved awareness of key hygiene practices, disaster risk reduction messaging, and the effective use of hygiene kits. Furthermore, 5,000 children will gain access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities in 20 schools, 10 temporary learning centres, 10 child-friendly safe spaces and 10 health facilities.QC noted that this partnership represents a significant step toward enhancing Pakistan’s preparedness for natural disasters and improving protection for vulnerable populations, ensuring a more effective and timely emergency response. 

Oscar Piastri may have left it late in his title bid, but he is certainly not going out without a fight. The McLaren driver took pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix Saturday, just hours after winning the sprint to cut teammate Lando Norris’s lead to 22 points at the floodlit Lusail International Circuit. Four-time defending champion Max Verstappen, the only other driver still in title contention and 25 points adrift of Norris, qualified third for Red Bull. Norris had initially topped the leaderboard after the first Q3 laps, but a brief delay to clear debris, a strip of tyre compound that had peeled off Carlos Sainz’s Williams, halted proceedings. When the session resumed, the championship leader ran wide at Turn 2 on his final push lap after appearing slightly unsettled while negotiating George Russell’s Mercedes on the out-lap. The error forced him to abandon the lap, opening the door for Piastri. The Australian made it count as he delivered a superb 1m 19.387s on his second flyer, securing his sixth career pole by 0.108s. Norris, who knows victory today will seal his maiden Formula 1 title ahead of next weekend’s Abu Dhabi finale, was left frustrated but offered no excuses. “We left the car pretty much the same, very minor tweaks here and there, but everything has been feeling great all weekend, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it,” Piastri said. “It was really good. We had a question mark on which tyres to use because I did a quick lap on a used set in Q2, but Q3 was really good on the new tyres.” Looking ahead to today’s race at the physically demanding, high-grip Lusail circuit, he added: “Pretty tough. With the two stops, we’re probably going to be pushing hard the whole time. It won’t be as hot as a couple of years ago, but I’m expecting it to be a tough race. You’re pulling G forces at multiple points on the lap, so it’s hard work but incredible fun.” Norris, meanwhile, shrugged off his mistake as he praised his teammate. “I just got a bit of understeer and was going to go off, so I had to abort. Which is a shame, but that’s the way it is. Oscar did a good lap and has driven very well all weekend, so nothing to complain about – just didn’t do the lap,” he said. “The first couple of laps are opportunities for everyone, but after that it should probably be straightforward.” Verstappen ended the session just over a tenth further back. The Dutchman must finish ahead of Norris today to keep his title hopes alive and take the fight to Abu Dhabi. “This qualifying was a little bit better. We are still quite far off, but at least I felt a little bit happier,” Verstappen said. “Some limitations prevent us from pushing harder around the lap, but we are P3 and starting on the second row, and that creates better opportunities because it’s hard to pass around here. We will see what we can do tomorrow.” Behind the top three, Russell and Kimi Antonelli locked out the third row for Mercedes, with Sainz seventh. Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Pierre Gasly (Alpine) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) completed the top ten.Earlier in the evening, Piastri had returned to winning ways with a dominant lights-to-flag victory in the sprint. He controlled the 19-lap dash to claim his first win since the Dutch Grand Prix in August, collecting eight points to further erode Norris’s lead. Norris finished where he started in third behind Russell. Verstappen gained two places with a brilliant launch to take fourth. Yuki Tsunoda and Antonelli were fifth and sixth, despite both serving five-second penalties for repeated track-limits infringements. Alonso secured seventh, with Sainz taking the final point. Ferrari endured a miserable evening, Leclerc slipping back at the start and finishing 13th. Lewis Hamilton fared even worse, crossing the line 17th on what is turning into another deeply frustrating weekend for the seven-time world champion. The frustration deepened in qualifying later, where Hamilton suffered a second straight Q1 elimination – becoming part of an unwanted Ferrari record. His lap was only good enough for 18th on today’s grid, matching his sprint starting position. “I was generally feeling better. We made changes. The car was feeling better. Just wasn’t great,” the 40-year-old Briton said. Asked for a message to his fans, he added: “I don’t really have a message right now. I’m sorry. But I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve had all year. I wouldn’t have made it through this year without them.”
