Mohamed Salah will leave Premier League champions Liverpool at the end of the season, the Egypt forward announced as he started a farewell to what the club said were nine "illustrious" years at Anfield.The 33-year-old arrived at Anfield from Roma in 2017 before making 435 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 255 goals to leave him third on the Reds' all-time leading goalscorers chart. He has also won the Premier League Golden Boot award on four occasions while starring for Liverpool in both their 2019/20 and 2024/25 title triumphs as well as lifting the 2019 Champions League trophy.His Liverpool honours also include a Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. But the currently injured Salah has scored just five Premier League goals so far this this season, compared with 29 in last term's title-winning campaign.And his Anfield future became the subject of intense speculation after a dramatic bust-up with Liverpool manager Arne Slot in December. He accused Liverpool of throwing him "under the bus" after he was benched for three games in a row and said he had no relationship with the Dutch boss.Salah, in a video on social media featuring highlights of his time with Liverpool, said: "Hello everyone. Unfortunately, the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit. I can't explain in words to anyone not of this club."Salah, a free agent at the end of the season, added: "We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the team-mates past and present."And to the fans, I don't have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times. It's something I will never forget and something I will take with me always. Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home, to me and to my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone," insisted Salah in a reference to the Liverpool fans' chant.Liverpool said on their website: "Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool at the end of the 2025-26 season. The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield. With plenty still left to play for this season, Salah is firmly focused on trying to achieve the best possible finish to the campaign for Liverpool and, therefore, the time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will follow later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield," they added.Salah was forced off at Anfield last week after scoring in Liverpool's 4-0 victory against Galatasary, which sealed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals. In-form Salah had scored in three of his past four starts after an uncharacteristic lean spell but missed last weekend's 2-1 loss at Brighton, a blow to fifth-placed Liverpool's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League. 

England opener Ben Duckett has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League (IPL) four days before the start of the ‌tournament to focus on his international ​career, a decision ‌that could leave him facing a ‌two-season ban from ‌the league. The 31-year-old, who ‌scored 202 runs at an average of 20.20 during the Ashes, was bought by Delhi Capitals for Rs20mn ($213,167) at the auction. Under IPL rules, any player who registers for the auction, is picked by a franchise and makes himself unavailable before the ​start of the season can be barred from participating in the tournament and the player auction ‌for two seasons. “I have made the ​extremely difficult decision to withdraw from ​the IPL. I have given this a lot of thought and it has not been an easy choice,” Duckett wrote on Instagram. “Representing England is something I have dreamed of since I was a child, and I want to give everything I can to English cricket. To do ‌that, I need ‌to ensure I am in the best possible place physically and mentally ahead of the summer. “I would like to sincerely apologise to everyone at Delhi. I was genuinely very excited about the opportunity to represent the franchise, and I fully appreciate the time and ​planning that goes into building a squad. “I am sorry for any disruption my decision may cause. I would also like to apologise to all the fans, as I know how much the team means to everyone in Delhi.” The IPL runs from March 28 to ‌May 31. 

A consortium of investors, including US asset management giant Blackstone, Tuesday announced the takeover of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), one of the founding clubs of Indian Premier League, for nearly $1.8bn. The announcement comes just days before the start of the lucrative T20 tournament on Saturday. The franchise, which won the IPL for the first time last year, was sold by United Spirits Limited, the Indian unit of British beverage giant Diageo, for Rs166.6bn ($1.77bn). In a statement, the acquiring consortium said it was “proud to become custodians of RCB.” The group includes Bolt Ventures, run by leading sports investor David Blitzer, Indian media conglomerate The Times of India Group, along with Blackstone and Indian corporate giant Aditya Birla Group. RCB’s “championship-winning culture” and its connection to the southern city of Bengaluru and “one of the most passionate fanbases in world sport make this an extraordinary opportunity.” “We are committed to taking RCB to new heights, on the pitch and beyond.” Praveen Someshwar, chief executive at United Spirits Limited, said the deal was a milestone “as we sharpen focus on our core beverage business to unlock its true potential with sustained growth.” Earlier this year, RCB’s women’s team won their second Women’s Premier League title. IPL’s RCB to keep 11 seats empty in honour of stampede dead Indian Premier League champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will keep 11 seats at their M Chinnaswamy Stadium empty in memory of the fans crushed to death in title celebrations last year, the team said Tuesday. Eleven supporters aged between 14 and 29 died in a stampede outside the stadium in June after RCB won the IPL for the first time. The lucrative T20 tournament begins its 2026 season on Saturday when RCB host Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Bengaluru team, including star batsman Virat Kohli, will warm up for the game in tops sporting the number 11 and wear black arm bands for the match. Along with the permanently empty seats, CEO Rajesh Menon said: “This is a tribute to our fans, who will always remain a part of our journey.” After the tragedy, authorities deemed the venue unsafe due to structural and crowd management deficiencies, and moved important fixtures elsewhere. But earlier this month the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that the stadium would host games, including RCB home fixtures. Menon said crowd management measures have been “significantly strengthened”, including setting up AI-led cameras. “This system provides real-time alerts, including stand-specific crowd counts, to ensure better monitoring and control,” he said. The stampede took place a day after RCB won the final against Punjab Kings and returned to a homecoming trophy parade. Hundreds of thousands gathered on the streets to welcome their hero Kohli and his victorious teammates. More than 50 people were injured. Several officials, including a senior RCB executive, and representatives of event organisers DNA and Karnataka State Cricket Association, were questioned by police.No one has been convicted.

Four teams out of six eliminated, with a total of 28 goals conceded over the two legs – it has been a chastening week for most of England’s representatives in the Champions League knockout phase. Only Arsenal, the Premier League leaders, and Liverpool – the English team with the richest history in Europe – reached the quarter-finals. Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur were sent packing. But does this really merit calling into question the standard of the Premier League? England’s top flight is easily the richest in Europe, with domestic and international broadcasting rights revenues dwarfing the rest. A report last month by UEFA showed television revenue for English top-flight clubs increased by 1.5bn euros ($1.77bn) from 2014-2024 – the combined figure for the rest of Europe was almost the same. Fifteen of the 30 richest clubs in analysts Deloitte’s latest Football Money League are English. However, three of the four English teams eliminated in the last 16 this week lost to clubs with larger revenues. The exception was Tottenham, but they are having a dreadful season and so losing 7-5 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid was no surprise. City, champions in 2023, lost 5-1 on aggregate to Real Madrid, the record 15-time European Cup winners and the only club with revenue over one billion euros in Deloitte’s latest table. Chelsea were crushed 8-2 on aggregate by reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, while Newcastle lost 8-3 overall against Barcelona. There have only been three occasions since 1955 in which an English team has conceded at least eight goals on aggregate in a European tie, two of them this week. England’s strength in depth is unrivalled, and shown by the presence of an unprecedented six sides in the last 16. But this level is also the territory of a small band of giant continental clubs perhaps not subject to the same levels of competitiveness in their domestic leagues. The four clubs with the highest revenue in Europe last year were Real, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG – they generate more money than anyone in England, and enjoy huge financial advantages over domestic rivals. Nineteen of the last 21 Spanish titles have been won by Madrid or Barcelona. Over the same period the duo have won a combined 10 Champions Leagues. Qatar-owned PSG have won 11 of the last 13 French championships and won their first Champions League last year after one final appearance and two semi-finals in the preceding five seasons. Bayern, who hammered Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate this week, are set for a 13th Bundesliga title in 14 years. They are also now almost always in the Champions League quarter-finals, and next face Real in a mouthwatering tie. For all the Premier League’s pulling power, few match-ups have the same appeal as that impending confrontation. “Both clubs are giant,” said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. Bayern have been helped by a strategy of signing a big Premier League name in each of the last three seasons: Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. Kane’s status as England’s leading player is maybe threatened only by Jude Bellingham, who was joined last year at Real by Trent Alexander-Arnold, lured from Liverpool. PSG boast Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, and in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia they have a player who has terrorised English defences over the last year. “In the Premier League, we don’t have Dembele, (Desire) Doue, (Bradley) Barcola and Kvaratskhelia,” said Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior. “They’re an outstanding team.” They are also youthful like Barcelona, who are once more leaning heavily on their academy, La Masia – their average age against Newcastle was barely 25, and in 18-year-old Lamine Yamal they have the emerging global footballing superstar. “La Masia did a fantastic job there,” purred Barca coach Hansi Flick. Those clubs may be best equipped to dominate in Europe, while Liverpool and Arsenal fly the flag for England which has provided only three of the last 13 continental champions. But the Premier League will be there en masse again next year – i t is on course to have five qualifying spots via the league and may again have a sixth if Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest win the Europa League. 

Arne Slot believes Liverpool fired a warning shot to Paris Saint-Germain of what they are capable of in a 4-0 thrashing of Galatasaray on Wednesday which set up a Champions League quarter-final against the holders. PSG edged past Slot’s side on penalties on their way to winning the competition for the first time in the last 16 last season. Liverpool were riding high at the top of the Premier League when the sides last met, but have endured a much more difficult second season under Slot. The Reds sit fifth in the English top flight and had to come from behind against Galatasaray after losing the first leg 1-0 in Istanbul. However, there was little doubt over the outcome once Dominik Szoboszlai levelled the tie on 25 minutes at Anfield on Wednesday. Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah struck in the second half, while Salah also missed a penalty as Liverpool responded in style from being booed off after Sunday’s 1-1 draw against struggling Tottenham. “They haven’t dropped their standards. It was hardly possible for them to improve, but they’ve been very impressive till now,” said Slot on facing the French champions. But I think after tonight they will not look forward to playing against us too.” Liverpool won 1-0 at the Parc des Princes last season, completely against the run of play. But the roles were reversed as PSG triumphed 1-0 at Anfield despite a much-improved Liverpool display in the second leg. “We were completely outplayed away from home. I think we played a great game here at Anfield and in the end we lost on penalties,” added Slot. Slot’s decision to rest a number of key players from the start against Spurs at the weekend paid off. Salah was one of those to return to the starting line-up and netted his 50th Champions League goal after the disappointment of missing from the spot and a series of other huge chances. “I think it says a lot about his mentality. He missed a penalty just before half-time and that was, of course, a difficult moment because after 45 minutes being 1-0 up was ridiculous if you looked at the run of play,” said Slot. “Then to come out second half and perform like that. A great assist to Hugo and the goal he scored was a trademark of him.” 

Arne Slot insists he can win back the support of Liverpool's frustrated fans after admitting he "must have done a lot of things wrong".Slot has come under fire throughout Liverpool's dismal Premier League title defence and the Reds boss will face increased scrutiny if his side crash out of the Champions League against Galatasaray Wednesday.Liverpool were booed off after conceding a 90th-minute equaliser to struggling Tottenham on Sunday, leaving Slot to answer questions about his Anfield future when he faced reporters. While the mood on social media has been anti-Slot for several months, the draw with Tottenham marked the first time Liverpool fans had been so vocal in their criticism."It's never nice they are frustrated because usually fans are not frustrated after you win," Slot said. "People told me when I came here that they will support the manager for such a long time, but if you are supposing something then I must have done a lot of things wrong. That's never a nice feeling to have because being in the club that's always so supportive for the manager, in good and bad times, then if they are not happy with me, then apparently I've done so many things wrong."Slot led Liverpool to the English title in a superb first season in charge after replacing the beloved Jurgen Klopp. But the Dutch coach has been criticised for Liverpool's lack of cutting edge and defensive flaws in a turbulent second campaign. The Reds, who sit in fifth place in the Premier League, must overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit against Galatasaray at Anfield to keep the pressure on Slot from building further."I did something wrong in the season that we won the league and I definitely did maybe make a few decisions that were not perfect in hindsight," Slot said. "But all the decisions I've made, I've always made for the same reason, for us trying to win the game. But I also know how the football industry works. Winning can change a lot. That's what we are trying to achieve tomorrow and we're completely ready for that."Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher this week questioned whether Slot's players are unified and willing to fight for the club. But Slot is adamant his squad remain fully committed to the Liverpool cause. "I should have seen why he said it, did he have examples? I agree with a lot of things Jamie has said throughout the season. This particular one I disagree with," he said."I need to go into details which I am not prepared to do. But it's not like we are playing like 11 individuals, if he meant that. I see a team that is fighting together. That is my opinion. A team that has given up, a team of individuals that doesn't work together doesn't show that resilience after our 120th setback this season. That's a bit exaggerating but we have had many."Liverpool have lost twice to Galatasaray in Istanbul this season, but Slot hopes their first meeting on Merseyside will lift the gloom at Anfield. "The good thing for us is we have the support of our fans, which will be supportive again tomorrow because that is what they have always been and will always be for this club," he said.For a club whose anthem is 'you'll never walk alone', Slot could be forgiven for feeling isolated by Liverpool fans lately. But he struck a hopeful tone as he said: "I've never felt alone since I've been here."

Arsenal moved a step closer to the Premier League title as Max Dowman became the competition’ youngest ever goalscorer in a dramatic 2-0 win against Everton, while Chelsea’s top four bid was dented a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle. Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to break down obdurate Everton until the closing moments at the Emirates Stadium. But Sweden forward Viktor Gyokeres finally found a way through in the 89th minute, with a helping hand from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Pickford completely missed Dowman’s cross and Piero Hincapie bundled the ball back into the six-yard box for Gyokeres to tap into the empty net. The ensuing scenes of delirium on the pitch and in the stands underlined the significance of Arsenal’s fourth successive league win. There was still time for Dowman to run the length of the pitch and slot home with Pickford nowhere to be seen after coming up for an Everton corner that ended in a rapid Arsenal counter-attack in the final seconds. Dowman, aged just 16, is the youngest scorer in the history of the Premier League, as well as Arsenal’s youngest scorer. Gyokeres on Dowman’s said: “It’s incredible. You can see how he plays. He stays so calm and without fear every time he gets the ball. He takes the right decision most of the time as well and with the goal, he definitely took the right one. He’s an amazing player, it was a great goal for him and I’m so happy for him.” The Gunners are now 10 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who were facing West Ham at the London Stadium in the day’s late kick-off. Arsenal, trophyless since 2020, are hunting a first English title in 22 years. The quadruple chasers rode their luck to beat Everton despite a disjointed performance, adding to the mounting feeling that they will be one of the least stylistically impressive champions in recent memory if they do take the crown. But Arteta and company won’t care about that ahead of a huge week. The Gunners have a Champions League last-16 second leg against Bayer Leverkusen next week with the tie level at 1-1 before heading to Wembley to face City in the League Cup final. Arsenal don’t play in the league again until April 11 when they meet Bournemouth. City’s clash with West Ham is the first of their two games in hand on Arsenal, with Pep Guardiola’s men also hosting the leaders in April. City must bounce back from their midweek Champions League last-16 first leg defeat at Real Madrid in a match of significance at both ends of the table. West Ham sit in the relegation zone but can leapfrog Nottingham Forest and Tottenham with victory over City. Fifth-placed Chelsea were beaten by Anthony Gordon’s goal at Stamford Bridge to round off a painful week. Thrashed 5-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 first leg, Liam Rosenior’s side were breached in the 18th minute when Tino Livramento’s pass allowed Joe Willock to burst clear and tee up Gordon for a composed finish. Chelsea trail Aston Villa and Manchester United by three points having played a game more than their top-four rivals. Brighton beat Sunderland 1-0 to climb into the top half of the Premier League, while second-bottom Burnley held Bournemouth in a 0-0 draw. Sunderland were unbeaten in their first 11 home games back in the top flight but have now lost their last three at the Stadium of Light to slip to 12th. Yankuba Minteh scored the only goal when his shot somehow squeezed past goalkeeper Melker Ellborg at his near post. Brighton move above the Black Cats on goal difference and into 10th. The stalemate at Turf Moor did little for either side as Burnley slip closer to relegation and Bournemouth failed to move in on the European places. The Clarets are eight points adrift of safety with eight games remaining. Bournemouth remain in ninth, three points behind Brentford in what is likely to be the final European spot in seventh.

Al Gharafa’s Qatar Stars League title ambitions suffered a setback after a 0-2 defeat to Qatar SC, while Al Shamal climbed into joint second place with a dramatic late win over Al Wakrah as the league resumed Thursday following a short suspension due to regional tensions.In the third match of the night, Al Duhail returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Al Sailiya at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.The results left Al Shamal and Al Gharafa level on 34 points, four behind leaders Al Sadd, who are in action today. Qatar SC moved up to 27 points, while Al Duhail climbed to sixth place with 24 points.At Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Shamal secured a hard-fought over Al Wakrah thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Pau Prim. The two sides battled evenly for most of the match, struggling to find a breakthrough despite creating several chances.Neither side was able to score in regulation time, though the crossbar denied both teams once during the contest. Wakrah’s task became more difficult in the closing stages when Radwan Berkane was shown a red card around 10 minutes from time.Shamal eventually found the decisive moment deep into stoppage time when Spanish midfielder Prim struck from the centre of the box following a corner kick to secure three valuable points for the visitors.At Al Thumama Stadium, Qatar SC delivered a strong performance to defeat Al Gharafa and deal a blow to the Cheetahs’ pursuit of the title. Musab Battat gave Qatar SC the lead in the 26th minute, beating goalkeeper Khalifa Ababacar with a shot that deflected slightly off a defender after a through cross.Gharafa’s hopes of mounting a comeback were dented early in the second half when Seydou Sano was sent off in the 47th minute following a VAR review. The defender had brought down a charging Faiz Selemani outside the box, leaving the referee with little choice but to show a red card.With the numerical advantage, Qatar SC maintained control and doubled their lead in the 66th minute through Joao Pedro. The Brazilian forward sprinted onto a long ball and calmly finished past the advancing Ababacar to seal the victory. The crucial win lifted Qatar SC to 27 points, strengthening their push for a top-four finish.Meanwhile, Al Duhail produced one of their most convincing displays of the season as they thrashed Al Sailiya. Benjamin Bourigeaud was instrumental in the victory, contributing a goal and three assists, while Krzysztof Piatek scored twice as the Red Knights ended a difficult run of results.Piatek opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a powerful header from a Bourigeaud corner before doubling the lead just three minutes later, again heading home from another precise delivery by the French midfielder.The Polish striker then turned provider in the 63rd minute, setting up Bourigeaud to make it 3-0 with a composed finish. Ibrahima Bamba completed the scoring in the 78th minute to put the result beyond doubt.The win moved Al Duhail to 24 points and temporarily into sixth place, while Al Sailiya remained 10th with 15 points as they continue to battle near the bottom of the standings.Three more matches are scheduled today, including leaders Al Sadd hosting Umm Salal at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Al Ahli will face Al Arabi at Al Thumama Stadium, while Al Rayyan take on Al Shahania at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.
