Another UEFA Champions League season gets going this week with the beginning of the league phase as Paris Saint-Germain bid to join the tiny band of clubs to have won the competition three years running.PSG successfully defended their title last season when they beat Arsenal on penalties in Budapest, retaining the trophy they won for the first time in their history 12 months earlier.Luis Enrique's side have already secured their status as one of the competition's greatest teams by winning it back-to-back, something only Real Madrid had previously achieved since the inception of the modern Champions League in 1992.Winning three in a row would be on another level entirely. Real did exactly that under Zinedine Zidane between 2016 and 2018, The only other teams to manage such a feat are Ajax (1971-73) and Bayern Munich (1974-76), while Madrid also won the first five editions of the European Cup from 1956 to 1960."Our objectives are clear. I want to win important trophies and there are none more important than the Champions League," said Enrique, who also led Barcelona to glory in 2015.The back-to-back titles for the French giants have coincided with the introduction of the new Champions League format, with 36 teams in the league phase now playing eight games against eight different opponents. The Parisians struggled in the league phase in each of the last two campaigns, finishing outside the top eight and having to come through the additional play-off round to make the last 16.Tough draws were partly responsible for that, and PSG will face some familiar opponents this time in Manchester City, Barcelona and Aston Villa. With each passing year, the prospect of a team other than one of Europe's super clubs winning the Champions League seems more remote. Arsenal to take next step?The Premier League's financial strength means all of its representatives can be expected to feature prominently, with Arsenal chief among them. Over the last three years, the Gunners have lost in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and then the final. There is therefore a logical next step for Mikel Arteta's side,Arsenal topped the league phase last season with a perfect record. They have a tough start this time away to Napoli. There are five English clubs involved, with Manchester City and Liverpool joined by the returning Manchester United and Villa.Bayern Munich are formidable, while Jose Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid charged with the task of leading them back to continental glory. Barcelona are itching to get their hands on the trophy again. It is hard to see beyond one of those clubs, although Inter Milan could have a say and Atletico Madrid will be desperate to reach a final to be held in their stadium.The only club outside Spain, England, Germany, Italy and France to have won the Champions League in the last 30 years remains Mourinho's Porto in 2004. Plenty of new names will add freshness to the competition, including Como, who finished fourth in Serie A last season under Cesc Fabregas to qualify at the expense of AC Milan and Juventus.Viking Stavanger are in the Champions League proper for the first time after winning a first Norwegian title in 34 years. Sabah start with a trip to Old Trafford after winning a first Azerbaijani title and coming through four qualifying ties.Their manager, Valdas Dambrauskas, got into coaching with the money he made appearing on the Lithuanian version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. "Since I was 12, when I realised I will not be a professional player, I knew I wanted to be a football coach," he said. "I cannot guess what would have happened without this game, but I believe I would have found a way to achieve my dream."Sabah might not qualify for the next stage – although compatriots Qarabag did that last season – but just being in the league phase is worth almost 20mn euros ($23.2mn) at a minimum, significant sums for clubs from lesser leagues.The Champions League winners pocket around 90mn euros in prize money, before adding millions more, notably from television 2 it is understood PSG earned around 150mn euros for each of their last two victories. 

Arsenal delivered an emphatic response to Chelsea's emergence as potential Premier League title contenders with a 2-1 win that ended their rivals' unbeaten start yesterday.Mikel Arteta's side trailed to Morgan Rogers' second-minute goal in a pulsating London derby at the Emirates Stadium. But the champions showed why they are firm favourites to retain the title with a blistering response to that early setback.Kai Havertz bagged the equaliser against his former club midway through the first half and Martin Odegaard netted Arsenal's winner soon after the interval. It was a statement of intent from second-placed Arsenal, who have won all three league matches to sit behind leaders Manchester City on goal scored.The Gunners' mature display underlined their desire to win the club's first back-to-back titles since the 1930s. For Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, the defeat ended his three-game winning run in all competitions since taking charge at Stamford Bridge in the close-season.Alonso will realise just how much work Chelsea still have to do before they are in position to end a title drought dating back to 2017. Chelsea's shaky defence is prone to costly miscues, while their vaunted attack found it harder to flourish against Arsenal than in their free-scoring wins over Fulham, Luton and Brighton.Arteta and Alonso have known each other since their days as childhood friends in the Basque region of Spain. The chaotic matches of their youth on a gravel pitch in the Berio district of San Sebastian would have seemed calm in comparison to the blood and thunder their teams brought to a raucous corner of north London.Chelsea beat Arsenal in the race to sign Rogers from Aston Villa in the close-season after the Gunners refused to match the Blues' £117mn ($158mn) bid for the England midfielder. Rogers showed why Chelsea made him the most expensive British player in history as he put the Blues ahead after just 77 seconds.Arsenal's rock-solid defence had allowed just one shot on target in their first two games. So often masters of the set-piece, Arteta's men were found wanting at a free-kick for once.Reece James' lofted delivery wasn't cleared by Declan Rice or Odegaard, giving Rogers the chance to drive a low volley past David Raya from the edge of the penalty area. It was the first goal conceded by Arsenal this season.Having conceded five times in their first two league games under Alonso, Chelsea's three-man central defence remains flawed and they were exposed again in the 25th minute. Havertz was allowed to drift from the right flank to the edge of the area unchecked by Jorrel Hato before the German smashed a low strike through the slow to react Maxence Lacroix's legs and past Emiliano Martinez at his near post.Pedro Neto was inches away from restoring Chelsea's lead just before half-time when the Portugal winger slapped his shot against the far post. Where Chelsea were profligate, Arsenal have developed a ruthless touch in front of goal.They exploited Chelsea's weakness at the back to net with a superb-crafted move in the 50th minute. Christos Tzolis has made an impressive start following his close-season move from Club Brugge and the Greek winger's incisive pass sliced through the Chelsea defence to Havertz.The German's clever dummy let the ball run through to Odegaard and he kept his composure to slot home from 10 yards.Rogers' angry clash with Rice prompted mocking chants of "you should have signed for a big club" from Arsenal fans. Chelsea had chances to silence the taunts, but Malo Gusto blazed over from a good position before Estevao Willian's rocket was tipped over by Raya in the final minutes.Earlier, Ainsley Maitland-Niles marked his Everton debut with a superb strike with virtually the last kick of the game to snatch a 2-2 draw for the Toffees against Manchester United.Maitland-Niles's arrival from Lyon on the final day of the transfer window was overshadowed by Everton's failure to reinforce their attack. But the former Arsenal full-back lasered a long-range shot into the top corner in the 96th minute to punish a lacklustre United performance.Bryan Mbeumo fired United in front inside the first minute of the second period. But an Everton side short on attacking options rallied to level through Tyrique George.Substitute Benjamin Sesko's header looked to have won United all three points. But the decision not to reinforce Michael Carrick's defence will face more scrutiny as United have conceded twice in all of their opening three games of the Premier League season. 

The Qatar Basketball Federation has announced the schedule for the Men’s General League Championship for the new 2026–2027 sports season. The competition will tip off on Saturday, October 10, 2026, with the participation of nine clubs: Al Khor, Al Rayyan, Qatar, Al Sadd, Al Gharafa, Al Ahli, Al Shamal, Al Wakrah, and Al Arabi. The first round will continue until Monday, November 9.  The Men’s General League begins with a single‑round league format before moving into the second stage, which will adopt a knockout system to determine the season’s champion. The first round features 36 matches across nine rounds, according to the program approved by the Federation, with games hosted at Al Gharafa and Al Rayyan arenas.  Al Arabi enters the new season as the defending champion of the last three editions, raising its tally to 11 titles in the history of the General League. Al Rayyan leads the all‑time record with 18 titles, followed by Qatar with 7. Al Sadd, Al Gharafa, Al Shamal, and the former Army Club each hold two titles, while Al Ahli has one, won in the 2000–2001 season.  The opening round kicks off on Saturday, October 10, with two matches at Al Gharafa Arena: Al Rayyan vs. Al Khor at 6:00 p.m., followed by Al Sadd vs. Qatar at 8:00 p.m. The round continues on Monday, October 12, with Al Gharafa vs. Al Ahli at 6:00 p.m. and Al Wakrah vs. Al Shamal at 8:00 p.m., also at Al Gharafa Arena. Al Arabi will rest in the first round.  Round Two will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, October 14–15. Al Rayyan Arena will host Qatar vs. Al Ahli at 7:00 p.m. and Al Gharafa vs. Al Wakrah at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday. On Thursday, Al Gharafa Arena will stage Al Khor vs. Al Sadd at 6:00 p.m. and Al Arabi vs. Al Rayyan at 8:00 p.m. Al Shamal will rest in this round.  Round Three begins Saturday, October 17, at Al Gharafa Arena with Al Wakrah vs. Qatar at 6:00 p.m. and Al Ahli vs. Al Khor at 8:00 p.m. The round concludes Monday, October 19, with Al Sadd vs. Al Arabi at 6:00 p.m. and Al Shamal vs. Al Gharafa at 8:00 p.m. Al Rayyan rests in this round.Round Four will be played on Wednesday and Thursday, October 21–22. Al Rayyan Arena hosts Al Khor vs. Al Wakrah at 7:00 p.m. and Qatar vs. Al Shamal at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday. On Thursday, Al Gharafa Arena stages Al Arabi vs. Al Ahli at 6:00 p.m. and Al Rayyan vs. Al Sadd at 8:00 p.m. Al Gharafa rests in this round.  Round Five takes place Saturday and Monday, October 24–26. Al Gharafa Arena hosts Al Shamal vs. Al Khor at 6:00 p.m. and Al Wakrah vs. Al Arabi at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. On Monday, Al Ahli faces Al Rayyan at 6:00 p.m., followed by Al Gharafa vs. Qatar at 8:00 p.m. Al Sadd rests in this round.Round Six will be held Wednesday and Thursday, October 28–29. Al Rayyan Arena hosts Al Arabi vs. Al Shamal at 7:00 p.m. and Al Khor vs. Al Gharafa at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday. On Thursday, Al Gharafa Arena stages Al Rayyan vs. Al Wakrah at 6:00 p.m. and Al Sadd vs. Al Ahli at 8:00 p.m. Qatar rests in this round.  Round Seven takes place Saturday and Monday, October 31 and November 2. Al Gharafa Arena hosts Al Shamal vs. Al Rayyan at 6:00 p.m. and Al Wakrah vs. Al Sadd at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. On Monday, Al Gharafa faces Al Arabi at 6:00 p.m., followed by Qatar vs. Al Khor at 8:00 p.m. Al Ahli rests in this round.  Round Eight will be played Wednesday and Thursday, November 4–5. Al Rayyan Arena hosts Al Sadd vs. Al Shamal at 7:00 p.m. and Al Rayyan vs. Al Gharafa at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday. On Thursday, Al Gharafa Arena stages Al Arabi vs. Qatar at 6:00 p.m. and Al Ahli vs. Al Wakrah at 8:00 p.m. Al Khor rests in this round.  The first round concludes with Round Nine on Saturday and Monday, November 7–9. On Saturday, Al Gharafa Arena hosts Al Gharafa vs. Al Sadd at 6:00 p.m. and Al Shamal vs. Al Ahli at 8:00 p.m. On Monday, the stage closes with Qatar vs. Al Rayyan at 6:00 p.m. and Al Khor vs. Al Arabi at 8:00 p.m. Al Wakrah rests in this round.  Thus, the first round will conclude on November 9 after nine rounds of competition among the nine clubs, before moving into the knockout stage to determine the Men’s General League champion for the 2026–2027 season.

Lusail secured their first Qatar Stars League victory in emphatic fashion, thrashing Al Wakrah 4-0 at Lusail Stadium, while Al Shamal produced a late comeback to beat 10-man Al Shahania 4-2 in an eventful third-round clash at Al Bayt Stadium.The victory marked Lusail’s first in the top flight since their establishment and promotion to the First Division after winning the Second Division League title last season. Lusail began their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Al Rayyan before drawing 3-3 with Al Ahli. Friday’s emphatic victory lifted the newly promoted side to four points, while Al Wakrah remain on one point and are still searching for their first win of the campaign.Hamidreza Firouzi opened the scoring in the 12th minute for Lusail, firing a right-footed effort into the top-left corner after meeting a cross from Amin Pilali.Lusail doubled their advantage seven minutes later when Rodrigo Moreno converted from the penalty spot after Al Wakrah defender Ali Al Mahdi brought down the goal-bound Firouzi.The hosts extended their lead just before half-time, with Firouzi turning provider as Farhad Zavoshi rifled home from a difficult angle on the left. Lusail continued to dominate after the break, with Zavoshi completing his brace in the 57th minute to seal a convincing victory and compound Al Wakrah's misery. **media[487522]**At Al Bayt Stadium, Al Shamal scored three late goals to overturn a 2-1 deficit and beat Al Shahania 4-2.Al Shamal took the lead in the 25th minute when Abdelkarim Hassan struck from outside the box, but Al Shahania equalised from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time through Francesco Antonucci.Abdoulaye Traore then put Al Shahania ahead in the 54th minute after earlier having a goal ruled out for offside.The turning point came in the 72nd minute when Al Shahania were reduced to 10 men after Andreas Van Beek was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Baghdad Bounedjah.Al Shamal capitalised late, with Mowafak Awad scoring twice in the 80th and 90th minutes. He first connected with a Mohamed Ben Romdhane assist before converting Abdullah Al Ahrak's cross from close range.Bounedjah completed the comeback in the 10th minute of added time, racing onto a through ball before beating the goalkeeper to make it 4-2.The victory was Al Shamal's second of the season and moved them to seven points, while Al Shahania remain on three. Sadd face Gharafa, Rayyan meet Al DuhailDefending champions Al Sadd, who have won both of their league matches and reached the Qatar Cup final, face Al Gharafa Saturday, while Al Rayyan take on Al Duhail. Al Sadd coach Razvan Lucescu expects a demanding encounter against Al Gharafa, just three days after their Qatar Cup semi-final."We are playing another match three days after the Qatar Cup semi-final, but the team and players are ready to take on the challenge in order to achieve victory," Lucescu said.The Romanian added that Al Sadd's objective is clear - to win and continue their positive start - while stressing that the league encounter would be different from their recent Qatar Cup meeting.Al Gharafa coach Pedro Martins said his side had focused on tactical and strategic preparations during training. "We made some mistakes in the match against Al Sadd in the Qatar Cup, but it was an open and balanced match as we expected," Martins said."We must address the mistakes we made and avoid repeating them. I expect the match to be intense and open, with both teams adopting an attacking approach and relentlessly pursuing victory."Martins also stressed the importance of taking chances against the champions. "In matches like these, we must increase our attacking efficiency in front of goal and strive to capitalise on opportunities, because small details make all the difference. Playing against a team like Al Sadd also requires a high level of concentration throughout the entire match," he said.In the other fixture, Al Duhail coach Djamel Belmadi said his side are prepared for a difficult test against Al Rayyan at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium. "The Al Rayyan match is considered one of the difficult matches in the league. We are preparing well for this type of match and we seek to appear in the appropriate manner," Belmadi said.He acknowledged Al Rayyan's quality and history, adding that there was little to separate the two sides. "Certainly, there are slight differences between the two teams, and I don't see a big difference, but overall, the match will be difficult against a complete team that is one of the most prominent and distinguished teams in the league," he said.Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno, meanwhile, is confident his side can maintain their winning start. "We are facing a very important match because we will be playing against a very good team, and we need to give our best if we want to win tomorrow, and I have confidence in my team," Moreno said.He added: "I told the players at the beginning of the season that it was very important to win the first league games and now w Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis may have won in Zurich to keep his chokehold on world pole vaulting, but the Swede acknowledged he would have to continue giving his A-game to fight off Greek rival Emmanouil Karalis.Duplantis wrapped up a sensational victory at the penultimate Diamond League with a winning vault of 6.25 metres. Karalis cleared 6.20m, as both athletes failed in their efforts at what would have been a new world record at 6.32m. Duplantis has dominated the pole vault since 2019, winning two Olympic golds and three world titles. Also a four-time world indoor champion, he recently picked up a fourth European crown.Besides the burgeoning medal cabinet, the 26-year-old has also set the world record 15 times. Sometimes those records are set with Duplantis vaulting alone, long after wrapping up yet another victory. But there was a real element of competition at Zurich's packed Letzigrund Stadium, with Karalis pushing the US-born Swede to the max."Manolo jumped really out of this world," Duplantis said of Karalis. "It was amazing when he jumped 6.20, so I just had to respond. The best way was to jump 6.25 and come away with a win - this is the highest level of competition that there's ever been."Karalis's vault left him joint 15th in the all-time list dominated by Duplantis, who has 18 of the top 20, and a further 22 in the top 56 (down to 6.10m). "It's not every day two people go for the world record, so that was nuts," said Karalis, whose 6.20m clearance bettered by 3cm his personal best. "I did the PR, I was able to drive for the world record, so I am glad that I am here. I really enjoyed myself. It was a great competition. Everyone had a blast there." Fireworks to comeDuplantis predicted that there were going to be "a lot of fireworks like they've been in the past few weeks". "It's just going to be a crazy competition. Manolo's jumping is amazing right now, so I have to jump my A-game," he said. "It is going to take 6.20m bars to win from now on. That is the level that we are at right now - this is really fun."Karalis argued that the difference between the business-end heights was "mostly mental". "I have to break my mental barriers. It is good that I have the attention to the world record because in the next competition it will be mentally easier," said the 26-year-old Greek."I am so happy I tried for it. But for now, I keep the second place. I will keep the 6.20m and I will keep all the luck from all the people that supported me." Karalis added: "For sure, I pushed Mondo, I always push him. And I think he enjoys the pressure."Hopefully, in the future we are going to have amazing battles. Hopefully, I can get a win one day. But when that comes, I am going to keep smiling, keep competing and giving everything that I have in the field." In Duplantis, he has an adversary rarely seen in the world of track and field, an athlete blessed not only with a big dose of humility but also a devastating winning mentality."The goal is always to win, of course," Duplantis said. "I just try to go in there and get the job done and win." After Zurich, athletes head to the Diamond League finals in Brussels on September 4-5 and the inaugural season-ending World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest a week later.
