Al Sadd maintain perfect start with six-goal rout of Qatar SC

Al Sadd produced another emphatic attacking display as the defending champions thrashed Qatar SC 6-2 at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Friday to make it two wins from two in the Qatar Stars League.Paulo Otavio led the rout with two early goals, while Yusuf Abdurisag, Roberto Firmino, Claudinho and Akram Afif were also on target for Al Sadd. Joao Pedro and Pau Prim scored for Qatar SC.Al Sadd took control from the outset, with Otavio opening the scoring in the 15th minute after converting an assist from Afif inside the box. The Brazilian doubled the lead seven minutes later, deflecting Pedro Miguel’s inviting cross from the right into the net.The defending champions continued to dominate and added a third in the 29th minute when Abdurisag drilled home from close range following another assist from Afif.Qatar SC came out with a more organised defence after the break and began to pose a greater threat. Their efforts earned them a penalty in the 62nd minute after Claudinho brought down Mohamed Amine with a back tackle inside the box. Pedro made no mistake from the spot to reduce the deficit.Al Sadd quickly restored their three-goal advantage. Firmino collected a cross from Hashim Ali, produced a neat roulette inside the box and fired home in the 71st minute.Qatar SC pulled another goal back in the 82nd minute when Pau Prim found space inside the box before firing a diagonal effort into the net.But Al Sadd finished strongly. Claudinho flicked Younes El Hannach’s cross into the net in the 85th minute before Afif completed the rout in stoppage time, leaving a defender and goalkeeper stranded before finding the net.Al Sadd almost added a seventh in the closing stages when Hassan Al Haydos sent a flying free-kick narrowly past the top-right corner.In another six-goal encounter, Al Ahli fought back from behind to draw 3-3 with Lusail at Al Thumama Stadium, with both teams earning their first points of the season.Julian Draxler scored twice for Al Ahli, while Ismail Mohammed also found the net. Rodrigo Moreno struck twice for Lusail and Farhad Ismail added the other goal. Al Duhail, Al Arabi seek first winAl Duhail and Al Arabi will look to claim their first victory of the season when they meet at Al Bayt Stadium today.Al Duhail coach Djamel Belmadi said his team are ready for what he expects to be a difficult encounter against an Al Arabi side boasting a strong squad.“We performed well during the first-round match against Al Sailiya, and we will strive to continue delivering the same technical level, but at the same time we realise the difficulty of the task against Al Arabi,” Belmadi said.Al Duhail opened their campaign with a win over Al Sailiya, while Al Arabi were held to a 2-2 draw by Al Shamal.Al Arabi assistant coach Dumitru Russo said the coaching staff had used the past few days to assess the team’s opening performance and identify the details that prevented them from collecting all three points.He stressed that the match against Al Duhail would require complete concentration and tactical discipline throughout the 90 minutes.Russo added that the draw against Al Shamal had provided extra motivation for the players to respond, with the squad showing strong determination in training ahead of the match.In another match today, Al Shahania and Al Sailiya will also be chasing their first points when they meet at Lusail Stadium. Al Shahania coach Younes Ali said preparations had gone well, with his players aware of the importance of the encounter.He acknowledged that Al Sailiya are a strong and well-organised side but expressed confidence in his players’ ability to produce a good performance and secure a positive result.Ali said Al Shahania had managed to impose their style and create several chances in their previous match, but stressed that converting those opportunities into goals remains an area the team must improve.Al Sailiya coach Mirghani AlaZein, meanwhile, said his side will enter the match determined to collect all three points. “We will work on correcting the mistakes that appeared in the Al Duhail match and avoiding their repetition. Al Shahania is a strong team, and we know that the confrontation will not be easy,” AlaZein said. He added that Al Sailiya are determined to make up for their opening-round defeat by producing a better performance and securing a positive result.

Al Gharafa seek second victory as Al Shamal chase first

Al Gharafa and Al Shamal will renew their rivalry when they meet at Khalifa International Stadium today, with both sides looking to make an early statement in the Qatar Stars League.The second round comes after an exciting opening week, with Al Gharafa among the teams making a winning start. The Cheetahs defeated Al Shahaniya 2-1, with new signing Franck Magri scoring both goals, and will be aiming to build on that performance and maintain their place among the early leaders.Seven-time champions Al Gharafa go into the game with three points, level with Al Sadd, Al Duhail and Al Rayyan, and coach Pedro Martins will be keen to see his side produce another disciplined performance."The victory gave the players a morale boost and great confidence, and we seek to continue winning," Martins said. "All the players are in good condition and there are no injuries."Martins expects a difficult and open contest against Al Shamal and stressed the need for his players to remain focused and avoid mistakes.Al Shamal, meanwhile, will be chasing their first victory of the season after opening their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Al Arabi. The side coached by Spanishman David Prats finished strongly last season and will also have one eye on their upcoming AFC Champions League campaign. Prats knows his team will have to be at their best against an experienced Al Gharafa side."We are expecting a tough match against a formidable team like Al Gharafa, which will require a hard-fought effort from us to achieve the best possible result," Prats said. "We are aware of Al Gharafa's strength and know that facing them will not be easy. It is almost the same core group of players they have fielded for the past two seasons, and they are also the reigning Amir Cup champions."With both teams possessing quality in midfield and attack, the battle for possession could prove decisive. Al Gharafa will again look to Magri to provide the cutting edge, while Al Shamal will rely on the experience of Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah as they seek to move up from eighth place.The other major fixture today sees Al Wakrah take on Al Rayyan at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Al Wakrah began the season with a 2-2 draw against Qatar SC and will be seeking their first win under Chilean coach Jose Luis Sierra. Al Rayyan, meanwhile, defeated Lusail 1-0 in their opening game and will be looking to make it two wins from two.The match has added intrigue because Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno worked with Al Wakrah last season before taking charge of the Lions. "For me, playing against Al Wakrah is always a special match because Al Wakrah is like family to me," Moreno said. "But we need to win, especially if we want to win titles. We need to win every week."Moreno confirmed that Mitrovic is the only absentee but said he was confident in the players available to him. Sierra believes Al Wakrah have what it takes to challenge Al Rayyan. "Regardless of the opponent, I think my team is in good shape," he said. "With this level of performance, I think we have a real chance of beating Al Rayyan."Al Rayyan currently have three points, while Al Wakrah have one.Defending champions Al Sadd will also be in action tomorrow when they visit Qatar SC at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. Al Sadd opened their title defence with a 3-1 victory over Al Ahli and currently lead the standings on goal difference. Qatar SC, meanwhile, are looking for their first victory after drawing 2-2 with Al Wakrah.The second round will conclude on Saturday, when Al Duhail host Al Arabi at Al Bayt Stadium and Al Shahaniya face Al Sailiya at Lusail Stadium. Al Duhail made a winning start by beating Al Sailiya 2-0, with Edmilson Junior scoring both goals, while Al Arabi will be looking for a response after their 2-2 draw with Al Shamal.Both Al Shahaniya and Al Sailiya will be seeking their first points after suffering defeats in the opening round. FixturesToday: Al Gharafa vs Al Shamal at Khalifa Stadium | 5:15pm; Al Wakrah vs Al Rayyan at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium | 7:30pmTomorrow: Al Ahli vs Lusail at Al Thumama Stadium | 5:15pm; Qatar SC vs Al Sadd at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium | 7:30pmSATURDAY: Al Duhail vs Al Arabi at Al Bayt Stadium | 5:15pm; Al Shahania vs Al Sailiya at Lusail Stadium | 7:30pm

Barcelona remain hopeful of signing Julian Alvarez before the transfer window closes, club president Joan Laporta said, but Atletico Madrid continue to resist attempts to prise away the Argentina forward.Barca coach Hansi Flick acknowledged that the club could end the summer without signing a new striker if their pursuit of Alvarez ultimately fails.The Catalan giants have made Alvarez their prime target, with Spanish media reporting Laporta's stance is effectively "Alvarez or nobody" as Barca seek to strengthen their attack following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.Atletico, however, have repeatedly stated the 2022 World Cup winner is not for sale. Asked by AFP for comment, an Atletico source said the club had made their position clear already on multiple occasions.Alvarez, 26, missed Atletico training on Wednesday due to illness, days after being jeered by some of his own supporters during Sunday's 2-2 La Liga draw against Villarreal.Barcelona's interest in Alvarez has been public for months, and the player said during the World Cup that he would like to leave.In July, Laporta revealed that Barca had submitted a bid for the striker and said the offer would remain on the table even after Atletico informed them the player was not available.Speaking again, Laporta reiterated that Barcelona have not abandoned hope of reaching an agreement with Atletico."It seems that the player wants to come to Barca, and therefore we continue to hold on to our hope, our intention – always with the utmost respect for Atletico Madrid – of being able to sign the player," Laporta said in a video published by the club.Laporta also said Barcelona had received "information" indicating Atletico had held discussions with other clubs about a possible sale, strengthening the club's belief that a transfer could still happen.Arsenal have been linked with Alvarez in recent days, while Real Madrid made an approach earlier in the summer, although it was not considered a serious attempt to secure the striker's signature."We would like to reach an understanding with Atletico Madrid – we maintain our proposal, our offer to Atletico Madrid," Laporta said. "Hopefully there will be an understanding between the two clubs, between all of us, so that if they sell the player Barca will be the ones that can acquire the services of Julian Alvarez."Flick avoided discussing the player directly when asked about Barcelona's interest but admitted the club's plans must balance short-term ambitions with long-term stability."I don't want to speak about Julian. I only want to (speak) about the situation of the club. We made some really good, good transfers now in this market," Flick told reporters ahead of Thursday's match against Athletic Bilbao."Our goal is clear, but in the end also the club has to think about the future. Not only the present now. Of course as a coach I will say 'OK, give me the best you can have, and more and more and more', maybe it works or maybe not. I have total confidence with the quality we have now."The only recognised centre-forward in Barca's squad is Egyptian teenager Hamza Abdelkarim, who impressed in pre-season but has yet to make his official debut.Barcelona began their La Liga campaign with winger Raphinha leading the line in a 5-0 victory over Elche, and Flick admitted alternative solutions may be needed if Alvarez does not arrive.Midfielders Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo, as well as new arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi could be used in a false nine role. "Of course we have to manage something, we have to maybe find solutions for some situations and some games, but the quality we have now is huge," said Flick."For me the club is doing a great job. Deco is doing a great job. We're looking at the future, not just for this moment but we're looking at the next three, four, five years. I think the club is stabilised and this is what we all want."

The Qatar Football Association (QFA) believes that the strength and unity of Asian football depend upon open consultation, mutual respect and sound institutional governance, stressed QFA President, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani."Our recent correspondence with the Asian Football Confederation raises an important but straightforward question concerning the processes through which positions are taken in the collective name of AFC Member Associations", His Excellency said in a press statement published on QFA's website.This is not a question of personalities, nor of whether individual associations agree or disagree with the substance of any particular position. It is about ensuring that the voices of Member Associations are appropriately heard when Asian football speaks collectively, His Excellency added.He further emphasised that QFA raises these concerns in a constructive and brotherly spirit, with respect for the AFC and its leadership, and in the shared interest of strengthening the governance, unity and credibility of Asian football.

Arsenal powered to a 3-0 win against Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, delivering a swaggering statement of intent ahead of their Premier League title defence.Mikel Arteta's side used the annual curtain raiser to the English top-flight season as an opportunity to prove their long-awaited title triumph has done nothing to sate their appetite for success.The Gunners took just 24 seconds to show new City boss Enzo Maresca the standard required to keep up with the champions. Riccardo Calafiori's quick-fire opening goal was followed by a clinical Kai Havertz header before half-time.Arsenal overwhelmed sloppy City with their trademark intensity and Martin Odegaard netted after the interval to cap a resounding victory. The glamour friendly at Cardiff's Principality Stadium also allowed Arteta to parade Arsenal's close-season recruits.Bruno Guimaraes, signed from Newcastle for £75 million ($101 million), slotted into midfield with ease, while Christos Tzolis, lured from Club Brugge for £34mn, gave a lively display including two assists.The north Londoners will start a campaign as champions for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Already installed as favourites to win their first successive English titles since the 1930s, Arsenal look primed for a sustained spell as the Premier League's preeminent force.Their vibrant performance was the perfect warm-up before promoted Coventry visit the Emirates Stadium for the opening game of the Premier League season on August 21. It was a dispiriting wake-up call for Maresca, who will have noted how much more dynamic and cohesive Arsenal looked compared to his spluttering team.Pep Guardiola won 20 trophies in a glorious decade in Manchester, including the FA Cup and League Cup in his farewell season, but City haven't won the title since 2024 and finished seven points behind Arsenal in second place last term. Hand-picked to succeed Guardiola after quitting Chelsea in January following a turbulent reign lasting less than two seasons, Maresca now knows it will take a huge effort to close the gap on Arsenal, starting with City's opener at home to Bournemouth on August 23. **media[480007]** Rampant ArsenalArteta believes his players are still "hungry" for trophies, with their painful Champions League final loss to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in May providing motivation for this season.The Gunners took less than a minute to underline Arteta's point with a beautifully crafted opener. Myles Lewis-Skelly featured in Arsenal's midfield despite being linked to Chelsea and Manchester United and the teenager showed why he is in demand with a deft pass that split the City defence.Calafiori surged onto Lewis-Skelly's ball, evading City's woeful marking to slot a composed finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma from 12 yards. The left-back's goal was the quickest in the Community Shield since 1968 and rampant Arsenal struck again in the 27th minute.Martin Odegaard was gifted space to float a cross to the far post and Tzolis, left unmarked by Abdukodir Khusanov, headed it back into the six-yard box, where Havertz climbed above Ruben Dias to nod home. In his first showpiece occasion for City after his £116mn move from Nottingham Forest, England midfielder Elliot Anderson struggled to exert any influence.City talisman Erling Haaland was largely anonymous, wasting two good chances in the first half. Arsenal captain Odegaard showed his Norway teammate how to do it three minutes after half-time. Tzolis rolled a pass into Odegaard's path and he slalomed through the City defence before leaving Donnarumma embarrassed with a clever dummy and close-range finish.Only City, in 2019, have gone onto become Premier League champions among the previous 15 winners of the Community Shield. On the evidence of their stroll in the Cardiff sunshine, Arsenal's 18th Community Shield victory won't be the last silverware lifted by Odegaard this season.
