Ideal Indian School (IIS) organised Qatar National Sport Day (NSD) with a wide range of sports and fitness activities to celebrate the nation’s commitment to health and wellness. The event aims to encourage students and staff to participate in physical activities and promote an active lifestyle.The Department of Physical Education coordinated various sports, games, and fitness programmes to foster a culture of regular exercise and make sports an integral part of daily life. The celebrations witnessed enthusiastic participation from students of both morning and evening sessions across all sections — Boys, Girls, Junior, and Kindergarten — along with active involvement from teaching and non-teaching staff. Students actively took part in events such as the Scooter Rally, Circuit Run, Roller Skating, and Bicycle Rally, reflecting their spirit of sportsmanship and commitment to healthy living.Acting principal Mohammad Azam Khan K, along with the heads of Sections, officially flagged off the Roller Skating and Bicycle Rally. Hundreds of students enthusiastically took part in bicycling, skating, and a sports awareness walkathon. The event aims to promote environmental awareness and emphasise the importance and health benefits of regular physical activity and sports participation across all campus.School staff, including teachers, administrative and transport staff, actively participated in various competitions. The Male Staff Volleyball Competition and the Ladies’ Dodge Ball Competition were conducted with great enthusiasm. The winners were awarded trophies by the acting principal, and Ibrahim, head of Transport.Students of Ideal Indian School also participated in the Half Marathon Race organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee at Lusail Boulevard as part of NSD. As many as 67 participants from the Boys’, Junior, and Girls’ Sections successfully completed the race and were awarded medals. 

Little Kingdom of Rajagiri Public school marked Qatar National Sport Day with great enthusiasm and patriotic spirit as the Kindergarten section celebrated its much-awaited KG Sports Day on February 9. The event was a vibrant and memorable occasion, filled with energy, colour, and excitement. The opening ceremony featured a variety of cultural and sports-themed performances that beautifully represented Qatar's spirit and heritage.**media[416193]**All kindergarten students actively participated in a range of races and fun-filled sporting events.The ceremony was graced by the chief guest, Dr Aju Abraham, who officially opened the Sports Day. The flag hoisting ceremony was conducted by the Principal, Joshy Abraham, and the Vice-Principal, Radhakrishnan, symbolising the formal commencement of the day’s events.The programme concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Christina, the Physical Education In-charge, who expressed gratitude to the management, staff, parents, and students for their support and participation in making the event a grand success. The celebration not only promoted physical fitness but also instilled teamwork, confidence, and sportsmanship among the young learners, making it a truly memorable tribute to Qatar National Sport Day. 

Qatar Indian Masters emerged as overall champions at the Community Sports Meet, organised by Expats Sportive in celebration of Qatar National Sport Day. Excelling in both track and field events, they secured 147 points to claim the title. KL 10 Legends finished second with 117 points, followed by Calicut Sports Club with 108 points. Syro Malabar Cultural Association and Kia Qatar placed fourth and fifth, respectively.Held at the Aspire Zone Warm-Up Track and Field with the approval of the Qatar Sports for All Federation, the meet featured around 750 athletes competing in 37 events across athletics and games. Competitions included 100m, 200m, 800m, and 1,500m races, 4×100 relay, long jump, high jump, shot put, arm wrestling, tug of war, shootout, and cricket bowling.The event also showcased a vibrant march past, with cultural performances including Oppana, Kolkali, Chenda Melam, martial arts displays, and tableaux celebrating the diversity of India and Qatar. Harish Pandey, First Secretary at the Embassy of India, received the salute, and Qatari-based athletes who have represented India internationally were honoured.Distinguished guests included Abdul Aziz al-Mohannadi (Community Police), Mohammed Nasser al-Kaldi (Kahramaa), ISC president EP Abdul Rahman, ICC general-secretary Abraham Joseph, ICBF general-secretary Deepak Shetty, and several community leaders and organisation representatives.Individual champions included Abdunnasar Kuniyil (Calicut Sports Club, Masters men 50+), Mahroof (KL 10 Legends, men 20–35), Kannan Santos (Qatar Indian Masters, men 35+), Lincy Sukumaran (Qatar Indian Masters, women 20–30), and Surya Suresh (Qatar Indian Masters, women 30+). Syro Malabar Cultural Association received the Best Team award, and Muhsin Omassery (Calicut Sports Club) was named Best Team Manager.Prizes were distributed by a host of dignitaries, including leaders from Indian Sports Centre, Expats Sportive, Pravasi Welfare, ICC, and various community organisations, supported by the organising committee. 

The Qatar Stock Exchange Thursday gained about 13 points on the back of foreign institutions’ strong buying interests.The insurance, consumer goods, banking, real estate and telecom counters saw higher than average demand as the 20-stock Qatar Index rose 0.11% to 11,515.81 points, recovering from an intraday low of 11,427 points.The Gulf institutions were seen increasingly net buyers in the main bourse, whose capitalisation added QR0.32bn or 0.05% to QR686.55bn mainly on microcap segments.The Gulf individuals turned bullish in the main market, whose trade turnover and volumes were on the rise.The local retail investors’ weakened net selling had its influence on the main market, which saw as many as 2,179 exchange traded funds (sponsored by AlRayan Bank and Doha Bank) valued at QR6,546 trade across five deals.However, the domestic institutions were seen net profit takers in the main bourse, which saw no trading of sovereign bonds.The Islamic index was seen outperforming the other indices in the main market, which saw no trading of treasury bills.The Total Return Index rose 0.2%, the All Share Index by 0.22% and the All Islamic Index by 0.29% in the main bourse.The insurance sector index shot up 0.66%, consumer goods and services (0.63%), banks and financial services (0.54%), realty (0.42%) and telecom (0.32%); while industrials and transport declined 0.98% and 0.05% respectively.As many as 22 gained, while 27 declined and four were unchanged.Major gainers in the main market included Widam Food, Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding, Dukhan Bank, QIIB, Qamco, Qatar Islamic Bank, Woqod, Qatar Insurance and Vodafone Qatar.In the juniour bourse, Techno Q saw its shares appreciate in value.Nevertheless, about 51% of the traded constituents were in the red with major losers being QLM, Industries Qatar, Mannai Corporation, Doha Bank, Mekdam Holding, Aamal Company, Mazaya Qatar and Nakilat.The foreign institutions’ net buying increased substantially to QR556.2mn against QR58.24mn the previous day.The Gulf institutions’ net buying strengthened noticeably to QR14.29mn compared to QR6.84mn on February 11.The Gulf individual investors turned net buyers to the tune of QR1.18mn against net sellers of QR5.41mn on Wednesday.The local retail investors’ net selling declined perceptibly to QR72.56mn compared to QR83.72mn the previous day.However, the domestic funds were net sellers to the extent of QR490.08mn against net buyers of QR16.98mn on February 11.The Arab retail investors turned net sellers to the tune of QR5.08mn compared with net buyers of QR4.69mn on Wednesday.The foreign individuals were net profit takers to the extent of QR3.96mn against net buyers of QR2.26mn the previous day.The Arab institutions had no major net exposure compared with net sellers to the tune of QR0.14mn on February 11.The main market saw a 37% jump in trade volumes to 230.68mn shares to more than double value to QR964.09mn but on 50% contraction in deals to 21,482.In the venture market, a total of 0.79mn equities valued at QR1.64mn changed hands across 205 transactions. 

Qatar Chamber hosted on Thursday a trade delegation from the Republic of Tanzania, led by Director of Business Development at Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB), Afia Mwanahamisi Siggi and Senior Investment Officer at the Tanzania Investment and Special Economic Zones Authority (TISEZA), Juma Ally Nzima.During the meeting, both sides discussed cooperation between the two friendly countries, particularly in the commercial and investment fields, as well as ways to enhance collaboration in agriculture and food security.The delegation was received by Abdulrahman bin Abdullah al-Ansari and Mohammed bin Ahmed al-Obaidli, board members of the Chamber.Speaking at the meeting, al-Ansari stated that the Qatari market welcomes Tanzanian products, especially in the food sector, noting that the Chamber is keen to strengthen cooperation between the private sectors of both countries in a manner that enhances trade exchange.Al-Obaidli stressed that there are broad investment opportunities in the African continent in general and in Tanzania in particular. He noted that the trade balance is tilted in favour of Tanzania, as Qatari imports from Tanzania in 2024 exceeded QR126 mn, most of which consisted of meat products, compared to Qatari exports to Tanzania, which amounted to QR69mn.Siggi said that the Tanzanian delegation's visit aims to strengthen trade relations between the two countries, promote Tanzanian products in the Qatari market, and invite Qatari investors to explore investment opportunities in Tanzania. 

Ons Jabeur, the Tunisian tennis player and two-time Wimbledon runner-up, has joined Qatar Foundation (QF) as the international ambassador of its Creating Pathways programme, with tennis introduced as the initiative’s final sport.Tennis joins track and field, basketball, volleyball, and fencing in the Creating Pathways programme, which was launched as part of QF’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 legacy plans. The five-sport programme aims to expand opportunities for women and girls, develop local athletic talent, and create sustainable pathways from grassroots participation to high-performance sport. A key component of this programme is identifying role models for young girls from Qatar and the region to relate and look up to.Jabeur is the first Arab and African woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final and the highest-ranked Arab and African player in history. Her success has inspired millions, broken barriers, and expanded what young people – especially girls – believe is possible. Beyond the court, she is a powerful advocate for women in sport and for humanitarian causes.Speaking about why she joined QF’s Creating Pathways programme, Jabeur said: “I was inspired by the programme’s focus on empowering young people, especially girls, and creating real opportunities through sport and education. It reflects my own journey and values, and being part of it allows me to give back in a meaningful way.“I hope girls see that sport can build confidence, discipline, and belief in themselves. Through tennis, they can discover their potential and feel empowered to dream big on the court and beyond. I want to help create a future where girls have equal opportunities, feel confident and supported, and are free to dream big, both in sport and in life, knowing they truly belong.”The programme is open to girls aged under 16, and in addition to on-court development, it takes a holistic approach, educating young people on the importance of regular exercise, proper nutrition and overall wellbeing.“Inspirational sporting figures like Ons Jabeur epitomise what it means, and what it takes, to be a champion in both sport and life,” said Alanoud al-Mesnad, executive director, Women’s and Girls’ Sports, QF. “The stories and successes of Ons and all our program ambassadors educate, motivate, and energise our Creating Pathways participants as they pursue their goals of reaching sport’s elite level.”During this week’s National Sport Day, Jabeur led several activations at Education City celebrating sport, as part of QF’s contribution to the nationwide showcase of the benefit of sporting participation and active, healthy living. 

Sidra Medicine, a member of Qatar Foundation, has reached a significant milestone in its digital transformation journey, with formal validation of achieving Stage 6 in both HIMSS EMRAM and HIMSS DIAM.The assessments by HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) reviewers, positions Sidra Medicine as the first hospital in Qatar to attain EMRAM Stage 6, and the only organisation in the Middle East and Europe to be validated at DIAM Stage 6. It is also the second organisation across the region to reach this level of digital imaging maturity.Maha al-Henzab, executive director, Information Management & Technology at Sidra Medicine said: “This validation reflects the dedication and collaboration of our clinical, technical, and operational teams. I am very proud of our collective expertise and efforts. Reaching EMRAM and DIAM Stage 6 strengthens our ability to deliver safe, efficient, and digitally enabled care, while laying a strong foundation for our continued progress toward Stage 7.”HIMSS EMRAM (Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model) measures how effectively hospitals use electronic medical records to support clinical care, patient safety, and efficient workflows. Reaching Stage 6 reflects advanced use of digital systems, including electronic physician documentation, closed-loop medication administration, and clinical decision support across inpatient and outpatient services.HIMSS DIAM (Digital Imaging Adoption Model) assesses how diagnostic and enterprise imaging are used to improve quality, consistency, and operational performance. Stage 6 recognises organisations that are using imaging data in advanced, integrated ways to support clinical decision-making and continuous improvement.As part of the assessment conducted from December 15 to 16, 2025, the reviewers evaluated end-to-end inpatient and outpatient workflows, laboratory and pharmacy processes, closed-loop systems, and complete diagnostic imaging pathways across departments. The assessment also highlighted Sidra Medicine’s use of AI-enabled imaging and 3D printing to support clinical innovation. 

The Philippines’ top diplomat here has urged Qatari investors to view the Philippines as a strategic gateway to Southeast Asia, positioning Manila as a partner in Doha’s long-term diversification drive under Qatar National Vision 2030.“We invite Qatari investors to view the Philippines not only as a trusted trading partner, but also as a strategic gateway to Southeast Asia, which is a dynamic regional market, having a total of over 650bn people,” Philippine Ambassador to Qatar Mardomel Celo D Melicor told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview.According to Melicor, the Philippines’ AmBisyon Natin 2040 complements Qatar National Vision 2030, opening avenues for cooperation across multiple sectors. AmBisyon Natin 2040 “represents the collective long-term vision and aspirations of the Filipino people for themselves and for the country...it describes the kind of life that people want to live, and how the country will be by 2040.”He said, “Beyond trade, we see significant potential for collaboration aligned with our shared long-term vision...while there are tangible achievements on the food and personal care sectors, we also see promising synergies in agriculture and food security, renewable energy, health care, and digital transformation.”He noted that Philippine enterprises, much like the Filipino community in Qatar, can play a constructive role in supporting the country’s continued economic diversification.“Just as the Filipino community has contributed meaningfully to Qatar’s development, we believe that Philippine enterprises can play a constructive role in supporting Qatar’s continued economic diversification,” he emphasised.Speaking on the recently-concluded Doha leg of the Outbound Business Matching Mission (OBMM) in the GCC spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry’s Export Marketing Bureau, Melicor stressed that Filipino products often remain under-recognised in Gulf markets, noting that the OBMM provides vital exposure to Qatari importers and investors.“The OBMM...creates the linkages. First, you have to be seen; you have to be known. So, the OBMM, including our exporters’ participation in trade fairs, are important for Filipino products to gain international exposure and recognition. That’s the strategic value of this mission,” Melicor explained.Citing a business mission to Doha in November 2025 led by a delegation from the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PCCI), the Department of Tourism (DoT), the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDa), and officials from the province of Misamis Occidental, Melicor said the meetings held by the delegates have resulted in promising business ventures and investment opportunities.“The visit of our stakeholders from the Philippines’ public and private sectors to Doha last year has attracted Qatari interest in halal tourism projects. A Qatari investor is slated to travel to the Philippines this month to visit the site in Misamis Occidental,” Melicor announced.Melicor also pointed to Qatar’s diversification drive under the state’s 2030 national vision, where services and knowledge-based industries offer long-term opportunities for Philippine collaboration.“We are reaching that time in history...the long-term strategic aim is to have services, for example, AI-aided services,” noted the ambassador, who acknowledged challenges posed by artificial intelligence to the Philippines’ BPO sector, urging a pivot toward animation, game development, and creative industries.“We need an alternative...animation, game development, and higher value-added sectors by maximising the use of AI, as well as technology where there is a keen focus on creativity,” Melicor pointed out.The ambassador underscored that Philippine enterprises are ready to contribute constructively to Qatar’s economic diversification, saying: “We look forward to deepening our engagements, learning from each other, and building partnerships that deliver shared and sustainable goals.” 

World number two Iga Swiatek and Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina both crashed out of the Qatar Open on Thursday losing their quarter-finals to Maria Sakkari and Victoria Mboko respectively.Top seed Swiatek fell short against a revitalised Sakkari who rolled back the years as she clawed her way to a nervy 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory while 10th seed Mboko outmuscled Rybakina 7-5, 4-6, 6-4."It's been a while since I had a big win like today," said Sakkari, who reached No. 3 in the rankings in 2022 but has slipped to 52nd. "When you drop in the rankings and you're not playing good tennis you start doubting yourself and you think you are never going to beat those players again. So it's a huge process you have to go through in your head that you can do it."The 30-year-old Greek won her first three career meetings with the young Swiatek but the last of those victories came in 2021. The Pole had won their last four matches, the most recent in straight sets in Qatar last year. "Last year in the second round here against her, I was not confident, I was not believing in myself and this year it's different. I feel a lot better," said Sakkari who will now face either 14th seeded Czech Karolina Muchova or unseeded Russian Anna Kalinskaya,. "I've missed that feeling of going deep into tournaments."Swiatek, who won the Qatar tournament, a WTA 1000 event, in 2022, 2023 and 2024, started as if she would repeat last year's rout when she broke twice in the first set. Sakkari began to fight back in the last game, but Swiatek saved a break point to seal the set.Sakkari continued her upswing by breaking in the second game of the second set. Yet every time she gained an edge, Swiatek responded. The Pole broke in the seventh game, but Sakkari steadied and broke in the tenth game to take the set.It was the first time in their seven meetings that a match between the pair had gone to a third set. In a see-saw deciding set, Swiatek saved a match point on her serve before Sakkari held to love, the Greek going on to win in the next game, on her third match point.The match lasted one minute under two-and-a-half hours and was followed by an equally gripping contest as Mboko underlined her growing reputation in a contest that was just six minutes shorter. Mboko, who had already defeated Rybakina in last year's Montreal semifinals, managed to break the Kazakh's serve three times in the opening set alone.On the flip side she lost her own twice but that was still enough for her to take the first set 7-5. She dropped her serve twice again in the second set, which Rybakina won 6-4. But the 19-year-old Canadian had the last word in the final set, winning it 6-4.Mboko, who was swept aside by world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16 in Melbourne, will face last year's runner-up, Jelena Ostapenko in the Doha semifinals. The Latvian, who won the French Open in 2017, advanced by beating the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-5, 6-4. 

Qatar Chamber recently participated in the ‘6th World Entrepreneurs Investment Forum’ (WEIF 2026), organised by the UN Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) office in Bahrain. The chamber’s delegation was led by acting general manager Ali Bu Sherbak al-Mansouri and included Dr Mohamed Ibrahim, economic adviser to the Chamber.  The delegation also attended the ‘3rd International Forum for Social Entrepreneurship 2026’, organised by the Regional Network for Social Responsibility. On the sidelines of WEIF, Qatar Chamber and UNIDO signed a joint Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Qatar Chamber.  The LoI was signed by al-Mansouri and Hashem Suleiman Hussein, head of the Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) at UNIDO. Addressing the forum, al-Mansouri emphasised the growing role of the social economy in driving sustainable development and social impact alongside financial returns.  He highlighted that social entrepreneurship provides innovative solutions to societal challenges while promoting economic sustainability.  He noted that the social economy is a key pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030, supporting social cohesion, family empowerment, and entrepreneurship, aligned with the 2024–2030 National Development Strategy.  Al-Mansouri stressed that Qatar’s private sector is a vital partner in sustainable development and that empowering social entrepreneurs contributes directly to human, social, and economic progress.  He noted that Qatar Chamber actively supports this vision by promoting responsible entrepreneurship, supporting SMEs with social impact, fostering partnerships, and providing platforms for knowledge exchange.  Al-Mansouri added that building a strong social economy requires collaboration between governments, the private sector, civil society, and academia to ensure sustainability and maximise its societal benefits.

Qatar Chamber hosted Wednesday a Russian trade delegation headed by Evgenii Bogdanov, first deputy governor of the Novgorod Region, and his accompanying delegation. The group was received by Qatar Chamber first vice-chairman Mohamed bin Towar al-Kuwari, in the presence of several Qatari businessmen and representatives of local companies.The meeting reviewed economic and trade relations between the two countries and explored avenues for enhancement, while also highlighting the investment climate and opportunities available in both markets.Bogdanov stated that the Russian delegation includes several companies specialising in various sectors that are eager to enter the Qatari market and supply their products to Qatar. He noted that the Novgorod Region is located between Russia’s two largest cities, Moscow and St Petersburg, and is witnessing significant industrial development. The region is distinguished by industries, such as metals, automotive manufacturing, oil and gas equipment, food processing, and advanced technology.He expressed his appreciation to Qatar Chamber for hosting the meeting, highlighting its role in bringing the business communities of both countries closer together and supporting Russian companies in entering the Qatari market and establishing partnerships and alliances with Qatari firms. He invited Qatar Chamber and Qatari businessmen to visit the Novgorod Region to explore the available investment opportunities and meet Russian companies.In turn, al-Kuwari affirmed that Qatar and Russia enjoy distinguished relations, noting that Qatari investments in Russia have witnessed remarkable growth. There are 58 Russian companies operating in the Qatari market, either through full Russian ownership or in partnership with Qatari entities.He confirmed Qatar Chamber’s readiness to assist Russian companies in exploring cooperation with their Qatari counterparts, pointing to broad prospects in energy, advanced manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, food security, and infrastructure.Al-Kuwari highlighted the important role played by the Qatari-Russian Business Council in fostering co-operation between the private sectors of both countries, noting the interest of Qatari companies and investors in learning more about the opportunities available in the Novgorod Region. 

A phone call was held between His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and President of the friendly United States of America Donald Trump.During the call, the two sides exchanged views on key regional and international developments, with particular emphasis on the evolving situation in the region and international efforts to advance de-escalation and reinforce regional peace and security.They also underscored the importance of continued coordination and consultation on issues of mutual interest, as well as supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving crises through dialogue and peaceful means.The call further addressed the strategic relations between the two friendly countries and explored ways to further strengthen and develop them across various fields.
