The Ministry of Culture’s mobile library provided a unique cultural and interactive experience for students at the Doha British School as part of the promotional campaign accompanying the 35th Doha International Book Fair (DIBF). The aim was to promote a culture of reading and strengthen children’s and young people’s connection to books and knowledge. The events held at the school saw enthusiastic student participation in the cultural and recreational activities offered by the mobile library. The children explored a diverse collection of children’s stories and educational books and participated in interactive activities that combined fun and learning, instilling a love of reading from a young age. This initiative is part of the Ministry of Culture’s extensive preparations for the DIBF, taking place from May 14–23 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC). The mobile library buses have been touring various areas of the country, bringing the atmosphere of the fair to the heart of the community and reaching the public where they are, with a particular focus on schools and public parks. The mobile library offers a comprehensive learning experience, with its shelves housing a rich collection of stories and educational books suitable for all ages. The campaign also includes in-bus visual presentations showcasing highlights from previous editions of the DIBF, as well as the distribution of gifts and brochures for children and informational materials for parents. The mobile library’s field visits include 12 schools and 16 public parks, in addition to being present at several key locations throughout the country. This initiative reflects the Ministry of Culture’s commitment to expanding access to knowledge and making reading a daily practice accessible to all members of society. The mobile library continues its tours in conjunction with the upcoming DIBF, reaffirming the role of culture in shaping future generations and fostering awareness through interactive initiatives that integrate books into the daily lives of children and families. 

Vodafone Qatar announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Al Jazeera Media Institute to deliver specialised training programmes covering media and administrative courses and diplomas, in line with the latest professional standards and practices. The MoU was signed by Abdulla Ali al-Misnad, Chief Administrative Officer at Vodafone Qatar, and Eman al-Ameri, director of Al Jazeera Media Institute, in the presence of representatives from both organisations. The agreement includes organising seminars, conferences, and specialised workshops in areas of shared interest, as well as developing customised training programmes tailored to Vodafone Qatar’s requirements, supporting professional development and strengthening media and communication skills. Al-Ameri stated: “Our partnership with Vodafone Qatar reflects the Institute’s firm belief that investing in people is the most essential gateway to building more professional work environments. Through specialised training programmes in communication and content creation, we extend our expertise to various work sectors, in order to enhance team efficiency and provide them with communication tools that responsibly and professionally express their institutions’ identity and core values.” Abdulhadi al-Sahli, head of Media Relations and CSR at Vodafone Qatar, said: “This partnership reflects Vodafone Qatar’s focus on investing in people and strengthening communication capabilities across the business. Through our collaboration with the Al Jazeera Media Institute, we aim to deliver high-quality training that supports professional development.” 

The Public Works Authority “Ashghal” honoured 161 employees who completed accredited training programmes in project management, graduate development and administrative support at a special ceremony yesterday (May 10) as part of its continued investment in human capital development. The event, held at Rosewood Doha Hotel, was attended by HE Eng Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Meer, president of Ashghal, along with several senior officials. The ceremony marked the graduation of engineers and employees who successfully completed specialised programmes supervised by the authority’s Human Resources Department, reflecting Ashghal’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national competencies and enhance professional readiness. According to Ashghal, the programmes included the Project Management Development Programme, which is designed to qualify newly graduated Qatari engineers and develop their professional capabilities; the Graduate Development Programme, aimed at equipping newly graduated non-engineers with the skills required to perform their professional roles efficiently; and the Administrative Development Programme, which focuses on developing employees holding secondary school and diploma qualifications in administrative support fields. At the ceremony, Ashghal highlighted its commitment to providing an integrated system of training programmes that support sustainable professional development. The programmes, which range from 12 to 36 months, are designed to keep pace with workplace requirements while enhancing employees’ technical, administrative and behavioural skills. Rashid Saeed al-Hajri, Human Resources manager at Ashghal, stressed that the authority’s commitment to creating a continuous and sustainable learning environment that supports lifelong professional developmentthrough specialised training programmes and projects tailoured to employees’ needs. He said the programmes contribute to building clear career paths, supporting the development of human capital, and aligning workforce capabilities with operational requirements, while also advancing the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. Ghanem Abdulla al-Kaabi, head of the Training and Organisational Development Section at Ashghal, said the authority’s programmes were developed using modern methodologies that account for evolving workplace requirements and focus on strengthening applied skills and practical experience among employees. He added that Ashghal continuously updates the content of its training programmes in line with best practices to maximise employee benefit and improve efficiency across various specialisations.During the ceremony, Eng al-Meer also honoured partner entities and internal trainers for their contributions to developing and supporting the programmes, and recognised employees who received the Employee of the Year Award for 2025. 

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a Qatar Foundation partner university, celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2026 in a ceremony held at Katara Hall in Raffles Hotel Doha. Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q, opened the ceremony with a message reflecting on the class’s shared journey and resilience. “Class of 2026, you are an extraordinary and resilient group of students. Twice in your academic careers, world events disrupted your path, and twice you found focus in times of uncertainty and purpose in moments of anxiety. I know I speak for every faculty member at CMU-Q when I say we are very proud of you.” Addressing the graduates on behalf of the global Carnegie Mellon community, CMU President Farnam Jahanian praised their steadfastness. “Amid uncertainty and geopolitical turmoil, you continued your studies while navigating disruption, distance, and concern for loved ones,” he said. “You adapted to rapidly changing circumstances with courage and care for one another. That perseverance speaks volumes about who you are and the kind of leaders you will become.” Representing the Class of 2026, two students addressed the audience. Noora Al Kuwari read an Arabic poem, “Students of Knowledge and Virtue” by Gibran Khalil Gibran, while student speaker Zeina Mahmoud reflected on the class’s four-year journey.Al Kuwari thanked parents and faculty for their support, noting their role in shaping the graduates’ belief in the power of education. Echoing this theme of resilience, Mahmoud said, “We may not have chosen all the conditions that shaped us, but CMU-Q taught us how to grow through them. Like the desert rose, we were shaped by the conditions around us, and by the people who helped us grow.”The ceremony also paid tribute to faculty and students for outstanding achievements. Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards were presented to Zhansaya Matkenova (Biological Sciences), Omar Hatem Ali Khalaf (Business Administration), Zeina Rami Halawa (Computer Science), and Fatou Sokhna Gueye (Information Systems) for achieving the highest academic standing in their respective programs. The four Qatar Campus Scholars for the Class of 2026 were recognized for their academic excellence and leadership: Gana Elnajjar, Phat Hung Diep, Zeina Rami Halawa, and Fatou Sokhna Gueye. Zeina Rami Halawa and Fatou Sokhna Gueye were named Andrew Carnegie Society Scholars. Dr. Varun Sharma, associate teaching professor of marketing, received the Meritorious Teaching Award. With the graduation of the Class of 2026, CMU-Q’s alumni community is now more than 1,500 strong, a network of young professionals driving knowledge and innovation across Qatar and around the world. 

Qatar Museums is organising the ‘Architecture in the Old Palace’ forum today (May 10) at the Darwish al-Far Hall at the National Museum of Qatar. The forum will feature a distinguished group of experts, researchers, and those interested in the history of Qatari architecture and heritage. The forum is part of the museum’s efforts to re-highlight the Old Palace, one of Qatar’s most prominent historical landmarks. It will offer an in-depth look at the palace’s historical and architectural development, its political and social role in the country’s history, and its transformation into an integral part of the modern National Museum. The forum will address a range of specialised topics exploring the architectural characteristics of the Old Palace, reflecting traditional Qatari architecture, the building techniques used during that period, and the symbolic value it holds as a witness to significant stages in the country’s history and its political and cultural transformations. Participants will also discuss the role of the Old Palace in Qatari public life, as a historical headquarters associated with the administration of the country’s affairs in earlier periods, before it later transformed into a cultural and heritage landmark housed within the National Museum. This transformation aligns with the museum’s vision of preserving national memory and promoting awareness of Qatar’s history and heritage. The forum will be conducted in Arabic with translation provided for attendees, allowing for broader participation from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds, and fostering the exchange of knowledge about the palace’s history and its architectural and heritage significance. The forum targets a diverse audience, including those interested in the history of the Old Palace, architecture and Qatari history students, historians, and researchers in architectural heritage. It provides a space for dialogue and the exchange of perspectives on the importance of preserving historical buildings as part of the national identity and cultural memory of the community. Through its themes and discussion sessions, the forum emphasises the importance of documenting the story of the Old Palace and passing it on to future generations, especially given the building’s historical and architectural value, which is linked to the development of the country and the cultural landscape of Qatar. The Old Palace is one of the key elements upon which the idea of the Qatar National Museum was based, as it was incorporated into the modern architectural design of the museum, to remain a living witness to the history of the country, and a bridge linking the past and the present in a cultural experience that reflects the development of Qatari identity over time.

Following Al Gharafa’s victory in the 54th Amir Cup final, Jassim bin Rashid al-Buainain, President of the Qatar Football Association (QFA), Saturday congratulated the club for their impressive performance. “I congratulate Al Gharafa on winning the Amir Cup,” said al-Buainain. The final, played under the gracious patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, saw Al Gharafa defeat Al Sadd at Khalifa International Stadium." Beyond the result, the QFA President was keen to highlight the collective effort behind the event. “I truly appreciate the work of all our partners in making this final, our most precious trophy, a success,” he stated. “It caps off a successful and truly special season for Qatari football.” The QFA President also praised the technical and organizational standards on display, noting that the final coincided with a landmark anniversary. “This was a fitting celebration as Khalifa International Stadium marks 50 years since its opening, I extend my appreciation to every government, sports, security, and media entity that collaborated with the QFA to deliver a memorable experience for the fans in attendance.” Al-Buainain went on to acknowledge the tournament’s sponsors as essential partners. “We value the vital role played by the Amir Cup sponsors. They are fundamental to the competition’s continued success through their unwavering support. We wish them continued progress and prosperity.” Taking a broader view of the season, the President added: “I also congratulate every club that has won silverware during the 2025–2026 season. We’ve seen outstanding performances from clubs throughout the year. By any measure, it has been a successful season, and we wish them all the best in their future competitions, both domestically and internationally.” Finally he offered a special word of thanks to the local media. “I am pleased to express my gratitude and appreciation to Qatar’s media outlets. Your role as a core partner in supporting Qatari football, and in covering every event and competition throughout the season, is invaluable," he added. 

The Qatar Sports for All Federation, under the Ministry of Sports and Youth, will stage the third edition of the global half marathon "One Run for All" on May 24 at Lusail International Circuit, drawing more than 2,500 runners across all ages and categories, including men, women, children and senior citizens.Addressing a press conference, Executive Director of the Qatar Sports for All Federation Abdullah al-Dosari outlined details of the race, now in its third year in Qatar. He said Doha was once again gearing up to host one of the world's biggest half marathons, run simultaneously in over 110 countries with more than 200,000 participants worldwide, 160,000 of them from Russia and 40,000 from other nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, China, Brazil, Serbia, Cameroon and Armenia.Al-Dosari said this year's event would feature six race categories, with the introduction of a 400m race for children and a 2.5km course designed to broaden participation and encourage families to run alongside their children. The programme will also include 1km, 5km, 10km and 21.1km races.He said the event promised an enjoyable evening for running enthusiasts, with entertainment activities at the fan zone kicking off at 4.30pm and the races starting at 9pm. All races are due to wrap up by 10pm.The executive director said race day would be a memorable occasion for participants and their families and friends, as in previous editions. 

Qatar’s food delivery sector is expanding at a pace that is reshaping how restaurants operate, with cloud kitchens increasingly seen as a lower-risk, cost-efficient alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar establishments.According to industry players, the cloud kitchen model is particularly well-suited to capture this growth, given its lower capital requirements and operational flexibility compared with conventional dining formats.“Cloud kitchens are uniquely positioned to accelerate growth in a high-demand market like Qatar,” Awais Malik, general manager for Kitchens at MENA-based food delivery platform talabat, told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview.Unlike traditional brick-and-mortar restaurants that require substantial upfront investment and are heavily impacted by rising real estate costs, Malik explained that cloud kitchens offer a more agile, asset-light model.“These kitchens act as localised distribution hubs, reducing delivery distances and improving speed, contributing to delivery time improvements of up to 13% regionally versus brick and mortar,” he pointed out.The cloud kitchen model also carries implications for small and medium-sized enterprises, where high rental costs have long been a barrier to entry. Malik said the “asset-light” model “is a game-changer for SMEs.”He emphasised that by significantly reducing upfront investment and ongoing overhead costs, cloud kitchens make it easier for entrepreneurs to enter the market and scale sustainably.“At talabat Kitchens, partners benefit from significantly lower rental costs as a share of revenue, typically saving up to half compared to traditional dine-in locations. This more efficient cost structure enables stronger returns while supporting expansion into both prime and underserved areas.”In line with this, Malik said talabat’s new kitchen in Wukair will serve as a launchpad for multiple well-loved and successful GCC brands entering and expanding within the market, helping bring greater variety and choice to customers in the area.“More importantly, the model removes the need for costly fit-outs and large teams, enabling SMEs to focus on what matters most: product quality, brand building, and customer experience. As a result, startups are better positioned to survive, grow, and contribute to a more dynamic and competitive F&B landscape,” he further explained.The sector received a further boost in July 2025, when the Ministry of Commerce and Industry established clear procedures and guidelines for obtaining commercial licences for cloud kitchens – a move, according to Malik, “has strengthened investor confidence and consumer trust.”“Clear regulatory frameworks from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry mark a significant milestone for the sector, giving investors the clarity needed for long-term planning,” Malik emphasised.  

 From a small school field in a remote village to the grandest stage of international football, Abjol Ahmed’s journey has now become an inspiring reality. The Qatar-based expatriate has been selected as a volunteer for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking a significant milestone in his life.Ahmed will serve as a hospitality volunteer at the iconic MetLife Stadium in the United States. The stadium is scheduled to host several key matches, including the final, making his role even more prestigious and memorable.This will be his second FIFA World Cup volunteering experience, having previously served successfully in an earlier edition of the tournament. His passion and long-standing commitment to volunteering have played a crucial role in reaching this remarkable stage.The upcoming World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring an expanded format with 48 teams. Out of nearly 1mn applicants worldwide, only around 65,000 volunteers have been selected — placing Abjol Ahmed among a highly competitive and elite group.His journey, however, was not easy. From the initial application and selection process to interviews, shift assignments, and visa procedures, he navigated a long and challenging path. After successfully completing all stages, he is now fully prepared for his new mission.If all goes as planned, Ahmed is expected to travel to the United States in the first week of June. His achievement is not only a personal success but also a proud moment for his home country. 

The Supreme Judiciary Council (SJC) has unveiled the Smart Building Project for the Execution Court, representing a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing judicial digital transformation strategy.The initiative reflects the Council’s commitment to enhancing institutional performance, modernising court infrastructure, and adopting the latest technological practices to improve the quality and efficiency of judicial services.The project was launched by the SJC Information Systems Department and is part of broader efforts to strengthen digital governance within judicial facilities. The smart building integrates advanced technological solutions and intelligent operational systems designed to create a more secure, efficient, and user-friendly judicial environment.The Smart Execution Court Building incorporates a fully integrated ecosystem of modern technologies and intelligent operational systems. The facility includes advanced access control solutions based on facial recognition technology, high-precision surveillance and monitoring systems, and comprehensive cybersecurity and data protection mechanisms designed to safeguard sensitive judicial information.The building also features smart energy management systems that help reduce energy consumption and support sustainability objectives, alongside automated lighting and climate control systems that adapt dynamically to occupancy levels and operational requirements.In addition, the project includes intelligent parking management systems that provide safe, seamless experiences for visitors, as well as a comprehensive digital infrastructure that supports electronic judicial services and interactive platforms to simplify procedures and enhance the user experience for litigants and visitors. The building further integrates a sophisticated customer satisfaction and feedback system based on biometric analytics and facial recognition technologies.The Smart Execution Court Building represents a qualitative transformation in the judicial work environment and serves as a practical model for integrating advanced digital technologies into the public service operations. Further, the project aligns with the SJC's vision to deliver more advanced, efficient, and responsive judicial services that meet societal expectations and keep pace with the demands of the digital era.In the meantime, the project facility has a gross floor area of 14,000 square meters and consists of five floors and two basement levels. The facility has a total parking capacity of 171 spaces.The Smart Execution Court Building project is considered part of Qatar’s continued investment in intelligent infrastructure, digital governance, and judicial innovation. By integrating artificial intelligence, smart monitoring systems, automated building management, and digital judicial services, the initiative would introduce a new benchmark for modern judicial facilities in the region. 

Both sides deliberate on Pakistani mediation efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in the US-Iran war HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani met in Washington yesterday with Vice-President of the friendly United States of America, J D Vance.Discussion during the meeting focused on the close strategic co-operation between the State of Qatar and the United States of America, and ways to support and strengthen it in various fields. The two sides also discussed the latest developments in the region and the Pakistani mediation efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in a way that contributes to enhancing security and stability in the region.During the meeting, HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the need for all parties to engage with the ongoing mediation efforts, to pave the way for addressing the root causes of the crisis through peaceful means and dialogue, leading to a comprehensive agreement that achieves lasting peace in the region.
