The Scottish Football Association launched an investigation after Celtic defender Julian Araujo and a member of his team's backroom staff were attacked by Rangers fans in ugly clashes after Scottish Cup quarter-final.Backed by 7,500 fans, Celtic beat their Old Firm rivals 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra-time at Ibrox. Fighting broke out when dozens of visiting Celtic supporters invaded the pitch to celebrate their victory. That sparked an incursion from hundreds of Rangers fans, who attempted to attack their Old Firm rivals.Fans threw missiles and fireworks. They continued to trade after police and stewards finally formed a barrier across the pitch. Police apprehended a man after Celtic players, including Tomas Cvancara, ran to the scene amid an incident involving a Celtic member of staff.Cvancara was later interviewed on television with blood stains on his strip, while Celtic right-back Araujo was pushed by a Rangers supporter. "An investigation will be carried out immediately in line with the Judicial Panel Protocol," the SFA said as they condemned the "behaviour from supporters entering the field of play".Celtic boss Martin O'Neill added: "As we were making our way back, I think there was some sort of fracas; somebody tried to get on the field. There is a natural euphoria about winning a game and about fans joining in. If this has gone too far, that would be disappointing."The ugly scenes came in the first Old Firm derby for almost a decade to feature a large allocation of tickets for away fans.Following numerous hooligan clashes in previous meetings between the Glasgow rivals, away supporters were banned from the matches in 2023, before being allowed to return on a reduced basis last year.The Scottish Cup tie was seen as a test for greater numbers of away fans. O'Neill's side moved into the semi-finals despite failing to register a single shot on target in 120 minutes.In the shoot-out, Rangers captain James Tavernier hit the bar with the first penalty before Djeidi Gassama blazed over. Cvancara converted to seal Celtic's victory before chaos erupted. "There were a few tete-a-tetes. It's unfortunate. Hopefully it doesn't dilute the performance," O'Neill said. "Old Firm games are explosive games, they always have been. That's maybe one of the reasons why the derby is one of the best in the world."Rangers boss Danny Rohl added: "I was not on the pitch in this moment. I didn't see it until now. I heard just that there was something on the pitch. I think we all know the emotional situation after a game. Nobody likes to see this."Despite amassing 24 shots and having a goal wiped out by VAR following a handball by Emmanuel Fernandez in extra-time, Rangers once again stumbled against their hated neighbours. The defeat was a bitter blow after Rangers blew a two-goal half-time lead in their 2-2 draw with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox last weekend.

The Ministry of Municipality Ramadan Football Championship 2026 kicked off on Sunday at Al Sadd Club’s Stadiums, with the participation of teams representing various sectors of the ministry and municipalities, in a competitive atmosphere that reflects the spirit of co-operation among employees.The tournament will continue until early March. The opening matches saw the Agricultural Affairs and Food Security Sector team defeat the Doha Municipality team with a score of (6-1). Meanwhile, the Al Khor Municipality team secured a win against the Al Rayyan Municipality team with a score of (5-3), marking a strong start to the tournament, which will proceed according to the approved schedule leading up to the final match.

Tens of thousands of Senegal football fans lined the streets of Dakar Tuesday as the Lions of Teranga held a victory parade to celebrate their triumph in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco. The players and coaches brandished their trophy from an open-top bus which inched its way through immense crowds across the capital, winding towards the country’s presidential palace. As the players travelled the final stretch of their journey along the city’s oceanside highway, the Corniche, fans walked and sometimes ran alongside the bus, with throngs of people lining the sidewalks. Downtown was overcome by a fever pitch of almost deafening noise – revving engines, horns, vuvuzelas and shouting – as the players neared the palace, where they will be officially received. In the morning, thousands had gathered at the parade’s starting point in Patte d’Oie, a working-class neighbourhood across town, wearing team jerseys, chanting, whistling and blowing vuvuzelas. All along the route old and young, men and women turned out decked in the country’s green, yellow and red colours, sometimes watching on from buildings and bridges, or even climbing on top of cars and billboards. Security forces were also present in large numbers, including anti-riot police. The Senegal team made its way across the capital after arriving on a special flight from Morocco shortly before midnight on Monday, where they were greeted by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and other members of the government. Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations when they beat hosts Morocco 1-0 in a chaotic final in Rabat on Sunday that saw the eventual champions storm off the pitch late in the game. “I wouldn’t have missed this moment for the world,” 26-year-old fan Doudou Thiam told AFP from the parade’s sidelines in the Bourguiba neighbourhood, wearing a Senegal jersey. “The Lions are our pride and they deserve all the honours. Even if it meant staying here all day, I would have done it”, he said. Din of victory A ruckus of whistles and horns has been almost constant since Senegal’s victory on Sunday night, when fans flooded the streets, filling the air with honking, fireworks and the deafening roar of vuvuzelas. The win marked Senegal’s second title, after their 2022 victory over Egypt in Cameroon. It was the team’s third final in just the last four editions. Hortense Kenny brought her five-year-old child to Patte d’Oie to watch the parade. “The Lions made an entire nation proud, beating the host country in those circumstances,” she told AFP, referring to the end of the match. “Now, all that’s left is to win the World Cup. With Sadio Mane, anything is possible,” she said, referencing the team’s biggest star. His role as peacemaker during the final – he was the one who stayed on the pitch and persuaded his teammates to return – has been widely praised. Nearby Abdulai Sy, a 49-year-old, told AFP he felt personally touched by the victory which gave him a “big sense of pride to also be Senegalese”. Controversial win Tuesday’s crowd seemed unphased by a cloud of controversy surrounding their team’s decision to storm off the pitch late in normal time in protest at a penalty awarded to Morocco. Prompted by Mane, they returned to the pitch and an attempted ‘Panenka’ penalty from Morocco’s Brahim Diaz was easily saved by Senegal’s goalkeeper before Pape Gueye won the game with a superb shot in extra time that stunned the Moroccan crowd. The Moroccan FA said it had referred the incidents, including protests from Senegal players and fans, to the Confederation of African Football and FIFA. Far from Morocco, football’s lucrative business side had trickled down even to the streets of Dakar Tuesday. Amath Ndiaye, a 36-year-old street vendor who usually sells tissues, told AFP he has switched to hawking jerseys, flags, vuvuzelas and whistles for the duration of AFCON and the celebratory aftermath. Tuesday, he was basking in the wisdom of his decision. “I’m doing well,” he told AFP from Patte d’Oie, near the joyous crowd decked out in patriotic Senegalese gear and waving flags.

Aspire Academy has signed a collaboration agreement with the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), making it the 51st member of the Aspire in the World Fellows programme. The partnership highlights the growing ambition of Romanian football and marks a significant step toward strengthening technical capabilities and football infrastructure. Prof Valter Di Salvo, executive director of Aspire in the World Fellows and director of Football Performance and Science at Aspire Academy, was in Romania to sign the agreement.“We are excited to welcome the FRF to the Fellows as just the fourth European federation to join this global network of elite clubs, football associations, and leagues. Our members have been fostering innovation, development, and knowledge exchange in football, with an emphasis on youth players, since 2014. “Joining us will see Romanian football gaining access to cutting-edge best practices in training methodology, performance management, sports science, data analysis, and nutrition. We are also looking forward to hearing how Romania approaches football development and what we can learn from them,” Di Salvo said. The first major joint project will see Romania hosting The Workshop Tour 2026 Europe in Bucharest from 20-22 April. This will mark the Workshop Tour’s first stop in Europe after previous editions in South America (Buenos Aires) in 2024 and in Asia (Singapore) in 2025. The tour is part of Aspire Academy’s ongoing commitment to supporting the development of global youth football through its worldwide programme, Aspire in the World Fellows.The event is dedicated to working with coaches to explore new ideas and innovations in youth football development nationwide. During the three days of the event, the sessions will cover a wide range of essential topics, including nutrition, psychology, sports science, as well as the technical and tactical aspects of the game. The workshop will bring together global experts and local practitioners through a series of theoretical presentations, practical on-field sessions and community initiatives. As part of the Aspire in the World Fellows, the FRF will also participate in the annual Aspire Academy Global Summit in the latter part of 2026. The event brings together all the members of the Fellows to explore the latest innovations in advancing player development, performance, and knowledge exchange. 

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae has backed the decision to play the Africa Cup of Nations every four years instead of two, saying that the change could benefit the development of football on the continent.“It can be a good thing if alongside that we do what we need to do for the development of African football,” he told AFP.The Cup of Nations has almost always been held at two-year intervals since the first edition in 1957 but Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe announced the change on the eve of the ongoing tournament in Morocco.Motsepe said that the tournament would go ahead every four years after the next two editions planned for 2027 and 2028, a decision that has been heavily criticised by some on the continent who see it as bowing to pressure from leading European clubs and FIFA.He said an annual African Nations League - along the lines of the UEFA Nations League - would instead be introduced to boost the coffers of national federations.“We are lucky in Africa now to have better infrastructure, better structured teams, better players, most of whom play for the best teams in Europe,” added Fae, who led the Elephants to the AFCON title in 2024.“Holding the AFCON every four years would mean having a major tournament every two years with the World Cup too, but there needs to be another major competition in Africa like the planned Nations League.“That would allow us to have games between teams like Morocco and Senegal every year, or Ivory Coast against Tunisia and Algeria against Mali.“And I don’t think that would penalise the smaller nations because I don’t know that them losing games 5-0 or 6-0 really raises the level of African football.“If they play against other teams of their level with the aim of being promoted, I think everyone will be a winner.”Meanwhile Fae admitted retaining the AFCON crown at the ongoing edition in Morocco is a hard task for his team.Ivory Coast are already through to the last 16 before playing their final group game today against Gabon.“There are eight or nine teams with squads that can win it, and I feel like teams play differently against us because we are the reigning champions,” Fae admitted.“That makes things even harder, but we are motivated to go all the way and we are confident too.”
