Proud to represent Qatar for third time at FIFA World Cup: Hani Taleb Ballan

Qatari talent continues to strengthen its presence at the world’s biggest sporting events, reinforcing the country’s standing not only as a successful host and organiser of major tournaments but also as a valuable contributor to the global sports landscape through highly qualified professionals in leadership positions.At the FIFA World Cup 2026, this reputation was further enhanced by the appointment of several Qatari officials to key roles within the tournament’s organisational structure, reflecting Qatar’s growing influence and the international recognition of its sporting expertise.Among the most prominent figures was Hani Taleb Ballan, who serves as Vice Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Chairman of the AFC Referees Committee, Chairman of the Arabian Gulf Cup Football Federation Referees Committee, and Chairman of the Qatar Football Association’s Referees Committee.During the FIFA World Cup 2026, Ballan played a pivotal role in overseeing the tournament’s refereeing operations alongside FIFA Referees Committee Chairman Pierluigi Collina and FIFA Director of Refereeing Massimo Busacca. His involvement highlighted the confidence placed in Qatari expertise and its contribution to the successful management of the world’s premier football tournament.In this interview, Ballan discusses his responsibilities in overseeing the World Cup refereeing programme, the mechanisms used to prepare match officials, the participation of Qatari, Asian and Arab referees at the tournament, the continued development of refereeing in Qatar, and his vision for the future role of Qatari talent in major international sporting events.Excerpts:Q. How do you view your participation at the FIFA World Cup 2026?A. I am certainly very happy and proud to be part of the team responsible for overseeing the referees at the World Cup and to represent my country at this global event. This was my third participation at World Cup tournaments, after the 2018 Russia and 2022 Qatar World Cups, an assignment that reflects the high level of trust placed in Qatari talent within FIFA. Working at the World Cup is a great responsibility, especially when the goal is to ensure the highest levels of refereeing fairness in the most important football tournament in the world. Being alongside Pierluigi Collina, Massimo Busacca, and the rest of the referees committee has been a great opportunity to exchange experiences and work within a fully integrated professional system, with the aim of delivering the best possible level of refereeing throughout the tournament. Qatari personnel continued their presence at international tournaments... Your view of this development?What we are witnessing today confirms that Qatar’s role is no longer confined to hosting tournaments; it has become a key partner in their management and organization. This is the product of years of investment in human capital. The State of Qatar believed early on that human development is fundamental, and therefore we now see Qatari personnel in various organisational, technical, and refereeing committees within the International and Asian Federations.This presence is not a matter of favoritism, but rather a result of competence, experience, and the ability to achieve, which makes us feel proud and, at the same time, increases our responsibility to maintain this position. Tell us about the final preparations for the tournament referees.Since the referees’ arrival, we began the final preparation program, which lasted nine days. The referees were divided into two groups: one for the on-field referees and the other for the Video Assistant Referees (VARs). The work was carried out in two sessions daily. In the morning, the programs included theoretical lectures and practical applications using the latest technologies, in addition to aspects related to nutrition and live review of refereeing decisions on the field. We also focused heavily on the use of VAR simulators. As for the evening sessions, they were dedicated to holding an official preparatory tournament called the ‘Referees’ Tournament,’ which lasted for 11 days. The refereeing teams officiated a full half of each match, with specialized instructors present to evaluate performance and provide technical feedback immediately after the matches. We also made sure to train the referees on the use of the latest technologies, such as semi-automated offside technology, goal-line technology, and other support tools, to ensure Their complete readiness before the start of the tournament. How were the referees monitored during the tournament and what were the most prominent activities during the matches?Preparation programs continue throughout the tournament but the primary focus is on preparing the teams assigned to officiate upcoming matches. Referees receive practical training through intensive application exercises, alongside tactical preparation through analysis sessions with specialized coaches who explain the playing styles of different teams. This helps referees maintain good positioning, movement, anticipation, and make appropriate decisions during matches. We have been conducting daily analysis sessions for all referees, whether at our headquarters in Miami or via video conference for referees in other cities. Technical instructors and performance analysts, in collaboration with the technology team, have prepared key refereeing clips to analyze referee performance, focusing on positive aspects and opportunities for improvement, which will contribute to raising the level of performance in subsequent matches. How do you view the Qatari refereeing team’s participation at the World Cup?The Qatari team that participated in the tournament, consisting of Abdulrahman al-Jassim, Saud Ahmed, Talib Salem, and Khamis al-Marri, has proven over the past years that it is among the best refereeing teams and deserves to be present in the biggest international tournaments. Being at the World Cup is no longer new for Qatari referees; it has become a natural achievement resulting from the great work done by the referees themselves, the Referees Committee, and the Qatar Football Association.I am proud of what the Qatari referees presented. They performed admirably, managed their matches with high efficiency, and lived up to their responsibilities. This is a continuation of their performance in previous World Cups, the Asian Cup, and other international tournaments. Khamis al-Marri was in the officiating team for the final. How do you see that?Khamis al-Marri’s presence on the officiating team for the final match is a culmination of the entire Qatari refereeing system, and he deserves this selection after the outstanding level he demonstrated throughout the tournament. How would you describe the development of the Qatari refereeing system in recent years?The Qatari refereeing has witnessed a qualitative leap at all levels. We have continuous training programs, internal and external training camps, technical lectures, the use of the latest technologies, and the assistance of international experts, in addition to a precise evaluation system after each match. Ultimately, the success achieved is the fruit of integrated teamwork, in which each individual performs their role to the fullest, which has contributed to building a generation of referees capable of competing locally, regionally, and globally. What is the secret to continued success of Qatari referees?Success doesn’t come by chance; it’s the result of daily work, discipline, and a belief in the importance of learning and never resting on any achievement. Qatari referees operate according to the highest professional standards, and this is what has brought them to the position they deserve today.

Spain stars lap up adulation of estimated two million on World Cup parade

New World Cup champions Spain enjoyed a vibrant celebration parade on an open-top bus through the streets of Madrid on Monday evening, with a jubilant crowd of an estimated two million people out to celebrate, according to local authorities.The players, some shirtless, set off on their procession under a blazing sun, along the main arteries in the city centre where a sea of fans in red and yellow were waiting, before arriving at Cibeles square where they will take to the stage.After flying back from the United States to Madrid, the players were received by King Felipe VI and the royal family, and then Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, before kicking off the parade.Players passed around the gleaming World Cup trophy and waved to their adoring supporters, the day after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra-time in New Jersey.Ferran Torres’s strike in extra-time was enough to bring Spain their second World Cup, following a first victory in 2010."You have shown your grit, your resilience and your courage, always backed by your technical skill, your control and command of the game, combining head and heart," the king told La Roja's stars, who were dressed in suits but changed to more casual clothing for their parade on a hot summer's day."Kings of the world" ran the words on the front of their vehicle, with fans chanting "champions" to their heroes.Spain captain Rodri held the World Cup trophy aloft at the top of the stairs as he descended from the Iberia plane that flew the team home after clinching their second star.Later at Moncloa, Manchester City midfielder Rodri said this was the crowning achievement of his career."I've always said it, winning with your country is the most beautiful thing there is, above all a World Cup," said Rodri."This generation grew up watching (Iker) Casillas and (Andres) Iniesta lift the cup and that we can do it today is the biggest thing you can do in football."Many younger supporters were not yet born when Iniesta's extra-time goal against the Netherlands secured Spain's first World Cup in South Africa 16 years ago.Match-winner Torres joked he was "flying, literally" after the team returned from the United States after beating Argentina in New Jersey."I'm very happy to see how excited all of the children are... (and) to have the parade and celebrate with all of the Spaniards," he added.Spain's World Cup winners bus parade started at Moncloa before heading towards Cibeles square, where hordes of fans had reserved their spots hours in advance.A ceremony involving the players will then be held at the square, along with musical acts, at the traditional gathering point for celebrations of the Spanish national team and its supporters.Spain's women's side won the World Cup in 2023, meaning for the first time a country has both trophies at the same time.In 2030, Spain will defend their crown on home soil, as one of the World Cup hosts along with Portugal and Morocco."It's two for two," said Prime Minister Sanchez, of Spain's record in World Cup finals. "Why not dream of a third in 2030, especially with Spain as hosts?"The Spanish press was running out of superlatives to describe its heroes after they overcame favourites France in the semi-finals before downing Argentina."The kings of all-time!" wrote Marca, celebrating a "second star that will now be stitched onto the Spanish jersey after yet another masterclass in collective play."Argentina, despite the presence of all-time great Lionel Messi, failed to create clear chances against Spain's well-organised and more positive side in the final.Messi had a sensational World Cup but drifted through the final like a ghost, shedding tears at the end."The pain is immense, and it's going to be hard for this wound to heal," wrote Messi on Instagram.In Madrid, tears also flowed on Monday night, but they were tears of joy.

Ghanim al-Muftah: Qatar’s inspiring voice of resilience, learning, humanity

In a moment that remains etched in global memory, Qatari youth Ghanim al-Muftah emerged as one of the most inspiring figures to represent Qatar during the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. His appearance was far more than a symbolic role in a sporting spectacle; it was a powerful statement of humanity, celebrating coexistence, mutual understanding and respect for diversity while demonstrating how determination can transform adversity into a source of inspiration. Watched by millions around the world, al-Muftah shared the stage with acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman in one of the ceremony’s defining moments. By reciting a verse from Surah Al-Hujurat, he delivered a timeless message that humanity’s diversity is not a cause for division but an invitation to know one another and build bridges of respect across cultures. The segment stood out as one of the most memorable highlights of the opening ceremony, seamlessly blending the universal appeal of football with values that transcend sport. His message of perseverance continues to resonate. In a post shared on his X account Monday, al-Muftah urged young people to remain steadfast in pursuing their dreams, emphasising that true success is measured not by the absence of challenges but by the determination to overcome them. He reaffirmed that faith, education and resilience remain the foundations of meaningful achievement, encouraging his followers to transform every obstacle into an opportunity for growth. Yet, al-Muftah’s story extends well beyond the World Cup stage. His journey is equally defined by academic ambition, discipline and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. Pursuing higher studies at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, he has demonstrated that academic excellence is achieved not through favourable circumstances but through perseverance and hard work. His commitment to education has also inspired the creation of the Ghanim al-Muftah Excellence Scholarship, offering talented Qatari students new opportunities to pursue their aspirations. Al-Muftah has become a role model for young people because his message is rooted in lived experience rather than rhetoric. Through his achievements, he shows that ambition can overcome even the greatest obstacles when paired with knowledge, discipline and self-belief. His public appearances and continued accomplishments have inspired a generation searching for authentic examples of resilience, reminding them that success is built through patience, determination and sustained effort, not ideal conditions. His appointment as a Goodwill Ambassador and active participation in humanitarian initiatives further underscore a mission that reaches beyond personal achievement. Al-Muftah embodies a vision of social responsibility, encouraging young people to embrace education, perseverance and service to others. His journey is more than an individual success story; it is compelling proof that resilience can challenge stereotypes, inspire hope and help build a more inclusive future, one in which obstacles are not the end of the road, but the beginning of extraordinary possibilities.

Argentina represented themselves in 'best possible way' at World Cup: Fernandez

Enzo Fernandez insists Argentina represented themselves in the "best possible way" at the World Cup despite the Chelsea midfielder's red card in the final and a host of ugly incidents in their controversial campaign.Fernandez was sent off for a second booking after clattering into Spain's Pau Cubarsi in the closing stages of normal time in Sunday's 1-0 loss.The 25-year-old's premature exit was the latest in a series of clashes to cast a shadow over Argentina's run to the final.Leandro Paredes appeared to throw punches at members of the Spain squad as they celebrated their victory, with FIFA subsequently launching an investigation into potential disciplinary breaches following the unsavoury post-match scenes.They also turned their backs on Spain when the Spanish received their medals and the trophy.Argentina's players also caused controversy by displaying a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" (The Falklands are Argentine) after beating England in the semi-finals.Argentina invaded the British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic in 1982.But Britain regained the archipelago in a brief war after then prime minister Margaret Thatcher dispatched a naval taskforce.Fernandez took to Instagram to defend his country for their World Cup performance, but made no mention of his sending off in his message to supporters."As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result," he said."For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn't just about winning; it's about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up."Fernandez was a member of the Argentina team that beat France to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.But Fernandez's hopes of a second successive title were shattered after his dismissal as Ferran Torres's 106th-minute strike settled a dour final marred by Argentina's defensive tactics."It has been a privilege to be part of a group that always stepped up, competed at the highest level, and defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment," he said."I want to thank all the Argentina fans. Thank you for always being there, for supporting us in every match, for the affection, for the unconditional support, and for making us feel at home anywhere in the world."Wearing my country's jersey is the greatest honour of my career, and I will continue to give my all every time I get to defend it."Meanwhile, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will consider his international future in the aftermath of the final heartbreak.The 33-year-old Aston Villa star, who won the World Cup four years ago, said on Instagram: "I dreamed of winning it again; I dreamed of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more."Honestly, the pain is hard to put into words. Now I have to reflect on many things, see how to move forward, and decide if it's time to step aside."I am truly sorry. I gave it my all to help my country and my team-mates."

La Liga chief says FIFA 'destroying football industry'

The president of the Spanish football league, Javier Tebas, accused FIFA of acting "irresponsibly" following the announcement of discussions regarding a possible 64-team World Cup in 2030, in an interview with an Italian sports daily published Tuesday.Tebas also said that FIFA president Gianni Infantino's time was "over", telling La Gazzetta dello Sport that there is a "system that is fundamentally flawed", which has allowed him to lead football's global governing body for a decade."The football industry is not just about the World Cup, however important it may be," he said."They are destroying the football industry - which generates tens of thousands of jobs - for an event that lasts 40 days and involves only a minority of players."At the World Cup opening ceremony in June, Infantino mentioned "discussions about expanding to 64 teams" for the World Cup's centenary in 2030, which will be co-hosted primarily by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina also welcoming some matches."We have repeatedly expressed our concerns about the competition calendar. And now they want to organise a 64-team World Cup," Tebas added, emphasising that "it is the domestic leagues that keep this sport alive"."We need fewer national teams and better protection for domestic football at all levels. They don't realise this and are making decisions irresponsibly," Tebas added.

Thousands welcome home Argentina squad, without Messi, despite World Cup loss

Thousands of fans braved the cold and rain Monday to give a rapturous welcome to the Argentine football squad who landed back home without star Lionel Messi, after their World Cup final loss to Spain.It was not the homecoming Argentines had hoped for, four years after millions celebrated their team's tournament victory in 2022, but fresh scenes of joyful chaos filled the street as they danced, sang and set off fireworks to thank the players.The Argentine Football Association (AFA) said earlier that some squad members would not be on the flight, and iconic team captain Messi was not seen descending from the aircraft in images broadcast on local television.Coach Lionel Scaloni and the rest of the team were welcomed with a red carpet outside the aircraft and a military band.They then boarded a bus, waving to frenzied fans along the way.Despite falling short of a second straight championship, "Argentines will celebrate anyway," said housewife Marga Ledezma. The 36-year-old thanked Messi for "all the years he made us happy," urging him not to quit playing for Argentina, but admitting this would be difficult as he was 39.Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in a game that has been criticized in international media for a plethora of fouls and displays of poor sportsmanship from the Albiceleste."I think they criticize us because we know what it's like to suffer, that we get up, we fall down again, and we keep going," said Ledezma.Many fans highlighted that the real victory for Argentina was the 2-1 semi-final win over England, played against the backdrop of a lingering dispute between the countries over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.Some carried flags declaring "The Falklands are Argentine." FIFA is investigating the Argentine team after players held up a banner bearing the phrase after their win against England which sparked a backlash from London.'The pain is immense'"This team united us all, and we should be grateful for that. We will always be there for them, rain or shine. I would say thank you to Messi and that he gave it his all," said Leonardo Barrientos, 36, who works in a textile workshop.Maria Ortiz, 28, came to welcome the team with her two-year-old, and said Spain "deserved the win" but she was "happy for what the team gave us."Messi wrote on Instagram on Monday that "the pain is immense and it's going to take a long time for this wound to heal.""I'll also hold on to all the good memories," he wrote alongside a photo of himself. "Today it's hard to appreciate what we achieved, but this squad reached two consecutive World Cup finals."With the tournament over, President Javier Milei announced that a future date agreed with the team would be set as a public holiday to celebrate their performance in the World Cup. No further details have been announced.While crestfallen after the loss, thousands of Argentines headed to the traditional celebration point at the Obelisk in Buenos Aires where they partied for hours on Sunday evening.Late at night, brief clashes broke out at the monument and police used water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse revellers. Fifteen people were detained, according to police sources.

The pain is immense, says Messi of World Cup defeat

Lionel Messi said on Monday that after Argentina's World Cup final loss "the pain is immense and it's going to take a long time for this wound to heal.""I'll also hold on to all the good memories," Messi wrote in Spanish on Instagram, alongside a photo of himself wearing his loser's medal following the world champions' extra-time loss toSpain. "Today it's hard to appreciate what we achieved, but this squad reached two consecutive World Cup finals.""I'd also like to congratulate Spain on winning the tournament," added the 39-year-old, who broke down in tears after the defeat.In the knockout rounds, Argentina came from behind to beat Egypt and England and had to go to extra time to beat Cape Verde and Switzerland."With the matches we turned around by giving our all - matches that will remain in our memories forever - and with the support of an entire country, which, together with the hard work and effort of this squad, led us to once again be among the best in the world," the Inter Miami forward wrote in the post. Having scored eight goals during the tournament, Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner as best player in the world, failed to make an impact in the final, much like his team, which was unable to pose a threat to a better-organised Spanish side.At the World Cup, he has now lost two finals, in 2014 and 2026, and won one, in 2022, against France.Argentinian media reported on Monday that Messi was not expected to make the trip back to Buenos Aires with most of the rest of the squad for what promises to be a subdued homecoming.

Mbappe becomes World Cup all-time top scorer with 22 goals

Kylian Mbappe became the top scorer in World Cup history on Saturday when he netted his second goal in the third-place play-off against England to take his tally to 22.The Frenchman, who has scored his goals over three World Cups, is now one ahead of Argentina's Lionel Messi, who will play in Sunday's final against Spain.Despite Mbappe's efforts, France lost 6-4 as their attempted comeback from a 4-0 halftime deficit fell short.Mbappe scored goals in the 48th and 66th minutes to move one ahead of Argentina great Lionel Messi."I'm just trying to help my team score every time," Mbappe said after the match. "It's for sure that when you score that many goals in the World Cup, it elevates you to certain levels but I would have liked to not be the top scorer in history and play tomorrow's (championship) match."So, I think it's good for legacy and when we stop (playing) to say that I was one of those players. But today, it's not the first thing crossing my mind."Mbappe also has 10 goals in this World Cup, two ahead of Messi in the competition for the Golden Boot. Messi's squad meets Spain in Sunday's final in East Rutherford, N.J., meaning the Argentine star has a chance to surpass both marks Mbappe set. Mbappe is the first player with 10 goals in a World Cup since West Germany's Gerd Muller in 1970.

England survive France fightback and secure third place in World Cup goalfest

Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick as England held off a stunning France fightback to claim a 6-4 victory in a madcap Miami thriller on Saturday, securing third place for their best World Cup finish since their sole title triumph in 1966.In a match of two halves where defending was a second thought, Kylian Mbappe scored twice to become the all-time World Cup top scorer as France battled back from 4-0 down at halftime to come within a handful of missed chances of equalising.Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot three minutes from time to make it 5-3 and calm England's nerves, having scored twice in the first half after goals from Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa had given England the perfect start.There was still time for a strike from Ousmane Dembele to offer France hope, but substitute Jude Bellingham snuffed it out deep in stoppage time with his seventh goal atthe tournament - the most by an England player at a single World Cup."We had a brilliant first half and then a turbulent second half," said England manager Thomas Tuchel."We are so, so tired and drained from the last weeks ... I have said it before, this team has created something very special, and they showed it again."The total of 10 goals was the highest for a third-place playoff match, bettering France's 6-3 victory over West Germany at the 1958 tournament.France, hoping to send 2018 World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps home with a victory in his final match in charge, exploded into life in the second half with Mbappe's double taking his tournament tally to 10 goals.That sent him two ahead of Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer and saw him pass the Argentine as the all-time World Cup leading scorer with 22."In the first half, I can understand those who say we were taking the piss, that we didn't respect the shirt," said Mbappe."I would say instead that we were human. Unfortunately, we were completely stunned. They gave us a proper wake-up call."In the second half, we became top-level players again, mental machines who no longer have feelings."The 39-year-old Messi will have one more chance to bump up his own tallies on Sunday when Argentina take on Spain in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium.  ENGLAND ATTACK FROM KICKOFFThe clash to decide third place is the match that no team wants to play and both coaches rejigged their teams with Deschamps putting out a second-string defence.Perhaps stung by criticism of England's passivity in the latter stages of their semi-final loss to Argentina, Thomas Tuchel's side attacked from kickoff with Rice charging forward to lash home the opener as early as the third minute.The midfielder turned provider in the 18th minute as Konsa headed home England's second from his corner.Tuchel's sidewere playing passes that went forward rather than sideways and several split the French defence wide open.Saka was the beneficiary of two such passes, opening his account in the 37th minute and getting his second nine minutes later as England drove home their dominance.Deschamps brought on Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Digne at the break to stiffen up his defence and suddenly the momentum was all with France.Mbappe, whohad clearly been desperate to get on the scoresheet in the first half, netted his first three minutes after the restart and his second in the 66th minute from another Michael Olise assist to reduce the deficit to 4-3.Bradley Barcola had ghosted through a tiring England defence to slot home France's second goal in the 54th.England, on the ropes, still tried to attack when the chance presented itself and ultimately did enough to secure third place for the first time after losing the playoff in 1990 and 2018."It's more disappointing for the coach (Deschamps)," said Mbappe. "We wanted to do something for him, but unfortunately the first half gave the impression that we had let him down."We want to thank the coach for everything he has done. This match will not tarnish the legend of Didier Deschamps."

Tuchel hopes England players will look back on World Cup with pride

England manager Thomas Tuchel said he hoped his players would one day look back on finishing third at the World Cup with some pride, despite falling short of their goal of winning the tournament.A 6-4 win over France in a frenetic third-place playoff at Miami Stadium on Saturday gave England their best finish at a World Cup since their only triumph when they hosted the tournament in 1966."It's the first medal for 60 years, the best World Cup on foreign soil. So I hope that the players can be proud of that in some time," he told reporters."We are fiercely competitive, so like we almost don't allow ourselves to be proud of the third place because 18 months ago we set ourselves the highest goal ... to make it to the final and win the World Cup."So it's very, very painful if you miss out. The pain will stay for a while."Tuchel came in for heavy flak after England lost 2-1 to Argentina in the semi-finals on Wednesday, particularly because of what were viewed as his defensive tactics after his side took the lead early in the second half."The press conference yesterday felt as if we went out in the group stage without a win, to be very honest," the German said."The best thing you can do is react on the pitch and get the next win. Everything else is just talking, and talking doesn't get you points, and talking doesn't get you a win."I'm glad that we showed a reaction. We wanted that reaction, and it's very impressive."Bukayo Saka's hat-trick for England on Saturday inevitably raised a question about why the right winger was not played in the semi-final."It was a tough decision for me to leave him out of the semi-final," said Tuchel, who admitted he had been cautious with Saka because of the Achilles injury he had been managing for the last few months."I had the feeling that Morgan Rogers had something special to give to us with his physicality and his body in the match against Argentina."We had (Saka) warm up several times against Argentina. We were ready to change, but the game became so crazy that we in the end opted for a different option."But nothing has changed during the World Cup for me. Bukayo is a fantastic teammate, fantastic football player, key player for us, and that will not change. He showed it again today and I'm happy for him."

Deschamps takes responsibility for unacceptable first half in last game in charge of France

Didier Deschamps took responsibility for France's "unacceptable" first-half collapse in a 6-4 defeat by England on Saturday as his extraordinary 14-year reign as national team coach ended in painful fashion.France trailed 4-0 at halftime in the World Cup third-place playoff before mounting a spirited recovery, but their late rally was not enough to prevent Deschamps' 185th and final match in charge from ending in a loss."It is a defeat, but we were 4-0 down. We produced an unacceptable first half," Deschamps told reporters."There was a reaction, with the things we know how to do well. We had two chances to make it 4-4, but we pushed forward a little more."That is what we know how to do, but we didn't do it. It is my fault because I must not have done what was needed in the first half."Deschamps said the performance after the break at least restored pride, though he admitted the sporting disappointment of France's tournament remained considerable after they had arrived in North America bidding to win a third world title."It would have been better to finish third," he said. "We came here with a lot of ambition. We managed to do quite a few positive things."We failed in our match against Spain and they knew how to perform against us. This is a group with footballing quality. There was enough talent to get results," Deschamps added."On a human level, it was a beautiful adventure. Eight weeks, it was beautiful." DOMINANT FORCEFrance's 2-0 semi-final defeat by Spain ended their hopes of reaching a third successive World Cup final before England inflicted another setback on the coach who had turned Les Bleus into one of world football's dominant forces."The disappointment is there on a sporting level," Deschamps said. "We had the opportunity to create emotions for tens of millions of French people. It is the World Cup, there is nothing more beautiful."The French Football Federation paid a glowing tribute to Deschamps, who leaves after 185 matches and 120 victories in charge."Didier Deschamps embodied high standards, rigour, a sense of the collective and love for the blue shirt," the FFF said in a statement."Under his leadership, for 14 years, the France team regained credibility, respect and affection while remaining at the highest level in the world."Deschamps led France to the 2018 World Cup title and 2021 Nations League crown as well as the Euro 2016 and 2022 World Cup finals.The FFF said his quarter-century of service to the national team, stretching from his years as captain to his time as coach, had left an "indelible mark"."Few will have given as much to the blue shirt, as a player and then as coach," it said.Deschamps captained France to their first World Cup triumph in 1998 and won the European Championship two years later before becoming only the third man to win the World Cup as both player and coach when Les Bleus triumphed in Russia in 2018.His final match provided none of the controlled, disciplined football that came to define much of his tenure, but the chaotic defeat did little to diminish a legacy that transformed France into one of the most consistent teams of the modern era."Thank you, Didier," the FFF said.

The $50 million showdown: Argentina and Spain chase World Cup glory and the grand prize

The stage is set at MetLife Stadium this Sunday, July 19, 2026, for a monumental FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. Beyond soccer immortality and the right to lift the iconic gold trophy, an astronomical financial reward awaits the team that emerges victorious. The nation that wins the final will secure the ultimate grand prize of $50 million, crowning them as the highest-earning team in the tournament. On the other hand, the side that falls just short as the runners-up will not leave empty-handed, walking away with a still-impressive $33 million consolation prize. This leaves a staggering $17 million difference riding entirely on the outcome of this single 90-minute showdown (or potential extra time and penalties). For Argentina, a victory would mean securing consecutive World Cup titles and the maximum payout. For Spain, it represents a chance to claim their second historic star and the top financial bounty. With $50 million on the line for the champions and $33 million for the second-place finisher, the financial stakes are just as massive as the sporting glory awaiting them on Sunday.
