New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner said he turned down a lucrative offer from the Big Bash League to focus on the international schedule."The offer was good, I'm not going to lie," the 34-year-old told the New Zealand Herald. "They knew it would have to be a good offer for me to entertain it with contracting and what would come up."I did entertain the thought of it, but coming back to what we've got coming up, even if I'm not going to play every game of Test cricket I still feel like there's a role for me."New Zealand have home white-ball and Test series against India and a Test tour of Australia coming up this year.Santner said he also had to consider how playing in Australia's domestic Twenty20 competition would have impacted his role as captain of New Zealand's white-ball sides."I don't want to give up captaincy," he said. "If that was part of the deal, it was a no-brainer for me."There were chats that it could have worked. But for me, sitting without a central contract and trying to captain, I don't know if that would sit right at this stage."We've got a World Cup next year, a T20 World Cup in New Zealand the year after. That's something I still want to be part of. And if I'm still leading the team then, awesome."Other players, including Devon Conway and Lockie Ferguson, have opted to go on casual contracts with New Zealand Cricket, allowing them to take part in franchise leagues while remaining available for international duty."There's no judgment with guys taking casual deals," Santner said. "We aren't going to keep up with the money for some of these other opportunities going around."If it is a casual contract, that's the way to keep guys invested and playing for New Zealand; that's what we want." 

The National Football League (NFL) is determined to make a big splashat its first regular-season game in Australia but out in the Melbourne suburbs, a quieter revolution is brewing without the helmets, shoulder pads and big hits.Non-contact flag football, which will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, may be the NFL's best chance of turning American football from a TV product into a genuine participation sport outside the United States.As the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams prepare for their season-opener at the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground, NFL officials and former players have been visiting schools and running clinics in Melbourne to preach the virtues of flag in a market that loves team sports.Former Rams wide receiver Torry Holt, a seven-times Pro Bowl player, took students through an introductory session of flag at Balwyn High school in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, giving notes on how ball-carriers can develop evasive skills."Flag football is so inclusive; everybody can play it. Girls, boys, little kids, little girls -- everybody," Holt told Reuters."It's not as expensive to play because you don't need all the gear. So I'm super excited about where flag football is and the States are excited about what it could be internationally." OLYMPIC DREAMSA commercial behemoth, the NFL is convinced its biggest growth will come from non-U.S. markets and that flag can be the key to unlocking them.It lobbied hard to get flag at the LA Games and has invested heavily in developing it at grassroots level in strategic foreign markets like Australia.The league says flag is now played in more than 500 schools around the country.The idea is to get children playing flag first and worry about converting them into NFL fans later."People don't inherently play (American) football,” Gerrit Meier, the head of NFL International, told Reuters."So we need to create a relevance that goes way beyond the NFL.”That means accepting there will be no quick commercial returns from investment and instead measuring success as a participation game."If suddenly I can get the education minister to say, ‘You know what? We should put flag into the school system,’ and we have more boys and girls playing it in school -- there's no commercial return but it's definitely on my list of what constitutes winning in that market.”While the LA Games will give flag's profile a huge boost, keeping it relevant may be a challenge without a guaranteed spot on the Olympic programme. FLAG APPROVED FOR LA28Flag was approved specifically for Los Angeles but will need to fight to retain its spot on the 2032 Brisbane Olympics programme along with squash, cricket and other sports.Flag football officials have made their pitch to 2032 Games organisers, whose programme choices must be signed off by the International Olympic Committee before they are confirmed likely later this year.NFL teams have backed flag and more than 200 NFL players are interested in playing it at the Olympics, the league said last month.Flag's 2032 fate will be decided before LA 2028, but the prospect of NFL stardust sprinkled over the Olympics on an ongoing basis may not hurt its chances of retention.Meier said players on multi-million dollar contracts could not help but be attracted by the "carrot" of an Olympic gold medal."You've seen it in basketball, you've seen it in tennis. It is very meaningful to be part of the Olympic movement," he said. 

Al Sadd will look to maintain their perfect start and stay at the top of the Qatar Stars League when the fourth round gets under way today, with Al Shamal and Al Rayyan hoping to keep the pressure on the defending champions.The six matches will be played over three days, with Al Sadd facing Al Sailiya at Lusail Stadium today, in what appears to be a favourable fixture for the league leaders.The three-time defending champions have won all three of their matches, scoring 13 goals in the process. Their latest success was a 4-1 victory over Al Gharafa, which left them alone at the summit. They have also reached the Qatar Cup final after beating Al Gharafa 2-1 in the semi-final.Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu, however, is taking nothing for granted as Al Sadd begin a busy period of the season. "Every match in the league is difficult, so we must be prepared for it in the best way possible. We need focus and mental discipline, along with the desire to continue working hard, to be ready in all aspects, and to treat the match as if it were a final," Lucescu said yesterday."This is the beginning of a very busy period for us, but we have to adapt to these circumstances and deal with them in the right way, especially since we have a group of players ready to give their all in order to win."Al Sailiya, meanwhile, are still searching for their first points of the campaign after losing their opening three matches. Their latest setback was a 2-0 defeat to Al Arabi, leaving them at the bottom of the table.Coach Mirghani al-Zein acknowledged the size of the challenge but said his team would be determined to produce a response. "Al-Sadd is the strongest team in the league, but Al-Sailiya will enter the match with the aim of giving their best and achieving a positive result," al-Zein said."We know that facing Al Sadd will not be easy, so we must be at the peak of focus and discipline throughout the match, and play to our full potential and maintain organization and cohesion in all lines of the team."Al-Zein added that Al Sailiya's performances had shown clear improvement from one match to the next, although the results had fallen short of expectations.Second-placed Al Shamal, meanwhile, will aim for a third consecutive victory when they host Al Wakrah at Al Bayt Stadium today. Al Shamal have collected seven points from their opening three matches, following wins over Al Gharafa and Al Shahaniya and a draw in their opening game. A victory would keep them firmly in the title race and increase the pressure on Al Sadd.Al Wakrah, on the other hand, are looking to recover from a damaging 4-0 defeat to newly promoted Lusail in the previous round. They have just one point and sit 11th, second from bottom.Chilean coach Jose Luis Sierra said his side must learn from their mistakes and restore their confidence. "I apologise to the fans and the club for the previous match, and I believe that although we have not yet achieved victory, we are performing well technically and in terms of the level of football," Sierra said."Our goal is to bring the team back to its previous level and correct the mistakes. We hope that in the next match we can rectify the situation, change the image, and achieve a positive result."Al Shamal coach David Prats expects a difficult encounter despite Al Wakrah's poor start. "Our match against Al Wakrah will be difficult because, in my opinion, they are one of the best teams in the league, even though they are not at their best during this period," Prats said."We are excited for the match and are looking forward to winning the three points, which is always our goal in every match we play."Al Rayyan, also on seven points and behind Al Shamal on goal difference, will host Al Ahli at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium tomorrow. Al Rayyan were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Duhail in the previous round after winning their opening two matches. They will be keen to return to winning ways, having also reached the Qatar Cup final at the expense of Al Shamal.Al Ahli, meanwhile, picked up their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Qatar SC. The result took them to four points and seventh place.Elsewhere tomorrow, Al Gharafa will face Lusail at Khalifa International Stadium in a meeting between two sides heading into the game with contrasting momentum.Al Gharafa have lost their last two matches and slipped to ninth with three points following their 4-1 defeat to Al Sadd. Lusail, by contrast, will be full of confidence after recording their first-ever top-flight victory, a 4-0 demolition of Al Wakrah that lifted them to sixth with four points.Saturday's programme begins with Al Arabi taking on Qatar SC at Al Thumama Stadium. Al Arabi earned their first victory of the campaign with a 2-0 win over Al Sailiya, taking their tally to five points and moving them into fourth place. Qatar SC have endured a difficult start, with two defeats and a draw leaving them with one point in 10th place.The round concludes with Al Duhail hosting Al Shahaniy The Big Bash League is to be partially privatised, beginning with the sale of the struggling Melbourne Renegades, Cricket Australia announced on Tuesday.The governing body wants to bring in private investment to the Twenty20 competition as it looks to shore up the game's financial future which has come under threat from lucrative leagues abroad."Beginning the sales process for the Renegades allows us to take the first step in a self-determination model for our members and represents a defining moment for the game," said Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird."This is a significant decision that has involved an enormous amount of analysis, discussion and collaboration over many months."Other franchises could be offered for sale further down the track, Cricket Australia said.Cricket Australia said it was aiming for the Renegades to have new ownership in place for the 2027-2028 season.Melbourne is in Victoria and the state's cricket association said the sale would help Australia keep pace with an "evolving" cricket landscape."We're enthusiastic about moving forward with this process and taking the Melbourne Renegades to market," said Cricket Victoria director Shaun Richardson.Privatisation has been a thorny issue in Australia, with an initial proposal to sell stakes in each of BBL's eight teams stalling earlier this year amid concerns about a loss of control for the game's local custodians.While the Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania cricket associations voiced support and South Australia said it was open to the idea, New South Wales and Queensland rejected the move.
