Aspire Academy football season kicks off with residential training camps

Aspire Academy has launched its new football season with a series of residential training camps for its various age groups. The opening week featured players from the 2011 and 2012 generations, followed by the 2010 generation, before the 2013 and 2014 squads completed the programme.The week-long camps were designed to help players refocus on key areas, including rebuilding fitness after the summer break and returning to the rhythm of regular coaching sessions. Living on site at Aspire Academy during the camps gave the players the opportunity to socialise, strengthen team relationships, and adapt to time away from home.The camps also enabled the coaching staff to identify focus areas as they develop their training plans for the season ahead. Ahead of the new season, Aspire Academy has also welcomed Mikel Antia as Technical and Methodology Manager. Antia returns for a second spell at the Academy, having previously worked there from 2012 to 2016.He brings extensive experience and expertise from a professional playing career and coaching roles at several clubs, including working alongside Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United and, most recently, at English Premier League side Leeds United. The Spanish coach explained why he chose to return to Aspire Academy and Qatar for the next chapter of his career.“I had a very positive experience during my four years here at Aspire Academy, and now they have offered me an opportunity that I could not turn down,” he said. “I know this place very well. I know the quality of work we can deliver, and I am confident that I can help the organisation continue to evolve and improve.”Antia believes that Qatar hosting the next four editions of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup can provide a major boost to the country’s football development. “The most important thing is that everyone - from the organisation to the coaches and players - understands what it takes to compete against the best,” he said.“The players need the right tools, and it is our responsibility to provide those tools so they are ready.” “These competitions are valuable because they help players understand the level of effort and commitment required - not only from them, but from the entire system.”“It is excellent to have this level of competition here in Doha because it reinforces the belief that we can compete, while also reminding us that we must continue improving every year.” Antia said his message to players and fellow coaches is simple: “one more”.“If we want players to grow and develop, we as coaches must lead by always giving ‘one more’ - asking what more we can do, change, or offer to help them improve. We cannot simply say, ‘It is done.’”“We must keep thinking about what else we can do. If players see that commitment from us, they will add it to their own habits - one more effort, one more repetition, one more sprint, or whatever is required. It starts with us as coaches, creating a culture that supports the development of a competitive mentality.”The student-athletes returned to full-time study and training at the Academy on 6 September, with additional local and international training camps, as well as friendly match series, planned for the coming months. The Academy’s pitches will once again host the FIFA Under-17 World Cup from 19 November to 13 December, with Qatar’s squad expected to include Aspire Academy student-athletes and graduates.

Aston Villa end goal drought to beat Brugge in Champions League opener

Aston Villa finally ended their goal drought as they kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 win against Club Brugge.Unai Emery's side have made a dismal start in the Premier League after a turbulent close-season marred by the departures of many of their Europa League-winning stars.They are goalless in the top flight and had mustered just one shot on target in their first three matches. But Villa's opening game of the league phase in Europe's elite club competition provided a welcome tonic as they won for the first time this term.In torrential rain at the Jan Breydel Stadium, John McGinn put Villa ahead in the early stages with his team's first goal this season. Hugo Vetlesen equalised soon afterwards, but Emiliano Buendia restored the visitors' lead before Nicolas Jackson's first goal for Villa increased their advantage on the stroke of half-time.Nicolo Tresoldi's penalty after the interval set up a tense finale, but Villa held firm. Villa can now turn their focus to securing a first top-flight win against Nottingham Forest this weekend before resuming their Champions League fixtures against Fenerbahce in October.Villa won the Europa League last season to end their 30-year trophy drought, but the team that made history by beating Freiburg in Istanbul has been ripped apart in a matter of months.Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Martinez, Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa were all sold in a summer of upheaval. The rebuild, sparked by Villa's need to stay within football's financial regulations, is a major test for Emery and this was the first sign that he can find a solution.Villa thrashed Brugge in the Champions League last 16 in 2025 and once again they proved too strong for the Belgian club.After three weeks of frustration, Villa scored their first goal of the season in the 11th minute. Pau Torres was the catalyst with an incisive run and pass that picked out McGinn, who curled a fine finish past Yann Sommer.George Hemmings nearly doubled Villa's lead moments later, but Sommer was equal to the 19-year-old's effort. Hemmings squandered another chance when he scuffed wide with the goal at his mercy.Brugge took advantage of those misses to level in the 18th minute. Teed up by Jan Virgili's dynamic burst, Vetlesen punished Villa's hesitant defending as he lashed a clinical strike past Zion Suzuki into the bottom corner.But Villa were clicking in attack at last and they regained the lead three minutes later. It was a move of ruthless efficiency as Joao Gomes picked out Buendia and his unerring strike gave Sommer no chance.With both sides pouring forward with abandon, Jackson bagged Villa's third in the 43rd minute. Jackson was much-maligned during his disappointing spell at Chelsea, but the £65mn ($88mn) signing showed impressive composure to hold off two Brugge defenders and evade Sommer before slotting into the empty net.Aaron Wan-Bissaka gifted Brugge a lifeline in the 61st minute when he handled Joaquin Seys's cross, conceding a penalty that Tresoldi stroked past Suzuki. Villa were under seige as Brugge pushed for an equaliser.They narrowly avoided blowing the lead when Tresoldi's header was fumbled onto the post by Suzuki. Tresoldi should have levelled in stoppage-time, but the striker's header was straight at Suzuki as Emery breathed a sigh of relief. Marin fires AEK to victoryAEK Athens also made a winning start, beating Austrian side LASK 1-0 in Greece thanks to Romanian midfielder Razvan Marin's curling free kick midway through the first half.Marin provided the decisive moment for AEK in the 21st minute, curling a free kick from outside the penalty area on the left-hand side into the top corner beyond the goalkeeper's reach.

Barcelona star Yamal says will not beg for Ballon d'Or

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal said he will not beg for the Ballon d'Or trophy after winning the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with the Catalan giants.On Monday, Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe made his case to win the trophy, highlighting his World Cup Golden Boot win, which also saw him become the competition's all-time top goalscorer. Yamal, 19, thought he had played very well while winning trophies for club and country but said he was happy to let others decide whether he deserved the prize.The teenager, Mbappe, Harry Kane, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are the main candidates to win the award at the ceremony in London on October 26."I don't think I need to (make a campaign for it), I'm not thinking about what I deserve, everyone can think what they like," Yamal told reporters. "I'm proud of everything I've done this year with my club and with the national team. We've become world champions, we've won the league again. I can't ask for anything more. I think... I've shown an incredible level, it's (the media's) job and I will not beg for anything."Yamal came second in last year's Ballon d'Or voting behind PSG star Dembele. France forward Dembele recently said that Kvaratskhelia, Kane and Mbappe would be in his top three to win the award."He's a friend of Kylian, right?" joked Yamal of the French winger, formerly of Barcelona. "The truth is I don't care, I'm very happy with the year I had, when I played against both of them together I must have annoyed them."Spain knocked out France in the World Cup semi-finals with a convincing 2-0 victory. Yamal suffered a hamstring injury in April and has only just returned to his best level.The winger appeared unhappy at the start of the season but seemed far more cheerful as he netted two goals against Rayo Vallecano and Valencia in his last two outings. "In the end, I'm 19, coming off winning a World Cup, having had the best holidays of my life," said Yamal. "I've never been happier at any point in my life than I am now."The teenager said a key ambition this season was to aim for the "very special" Champions League trophy, with Barcelona beginning their campaign today at home against Dutch side Feyenoord.Barca last won the trophy in 2015, led by the Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar attacking trident. Under coach Hansi Flick they reached the semi-finals in 2025 and then the quarter-finals last season."Every big club is dreaming about this because this is the best competition," said the German. "We have the quality to win this, but there's a long way (to go)."Flick hailed Yamal and said the most important thing was that the Spaniard is enjoying himself on the pitch. "Lamine is a player who can decide games on his own, fantastic quality," added Flick. "It's great, you can see it every day how he is enjoying playing football. For me the best thing is that he enjoys this game and then he's on a top level."Yamal will be the favourite to win a third consecutive best young player award at the Ballon d'Or ceremony. He was one of 10 players nominated, including Johan Manzambi, Yan Diomande and Ayyoub Bouaddi, who all impressed at the World Cup and were then the subject of big-money summer transfers.

World Cup final scorer Torres leads Ballon d'Or nominees

Ferran Torres, whose goal against Argentina won the World Cup for Spain in July, leads a 30-man list for the men's Ballon d'Or revealed. The 26-year-old who has since joined Paris Saint-Germain is one of six Spanish World Cup winners on the list, alongside 2024 laureate Rodri and last year's runner-up Lamine Yamal.In the women's section, three-time winner Aitana Bonmati did not make the shortlist after breaking her leg midway through the season, but her former Barcelona team-mate Alexia Putellas, the winner in 2021 and 2022 and now a London City Lionesses player, is there.Torres also won La Liga with Barcelona in May but is now teaming up with last year's Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele at PSG. France international Dembele is one of nine PSG team-mates on the list to have won the Champions League in each of the last two years.With Torres having joined the club, that makes it 10 current PSG players in total on the list. Among them, Fabian Ruiz is the only player to have won the Champions League and World Cup in 2026.Flying Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was one of the stars of PSG's successful Champions League defence, alongside Portuguese midfield pair Vitinha and Joao Neves, and all three are nominated.Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi received his 17th nomination, but his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo did not make the cut this time. Messi helped inspire an ill-disciplined Argentina to the World Cup final, where they took almost 120 minutes to muster their first shot against Spain in a one-sided final.England captain Harry Kane, who won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, is included as is his French team-mate and wing wizard Michael Olise. Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham earned his nomination with an impressive World Cup for England, scoring seven goals – matching Erling Haaland's tally and beaten only by Messi (eight) and Kylian Mbappe, on 10.Mbappe is there, after becoming the first player to win the World Cup golden boot a second time, while also scorching to the top of the tournament's all-time record scorer list. Yamal is also nominated in for the Young Talent award, which he has won the last two years. Vozinha, the 40-year-old who was one of the heroes of Cape Verde's fairytale World Cup run, has made the goalkeeper list.Barcelona will also have a handful of contenders for the women's award. Putellas is one of seven players who won the women's Champions League with the club in May to be on the list, including Poland's Ewa Pajor, who scored a brace in the 4-0 final victory over Lyon. Three of the men's nominees play outside Europe. Messi is a MLS franchise Inter Miami and Sadio Mane and Julian Quinones play in Saudi Arabia.The women's award spreads its net a little wider. Zambian Barbra Banda, who plays for Orlando Pride in South Africa, Mexican Scarlett Camberos who plays in her native country and Malawian Temwa Chawinga amd American Rose Lavelle, who play in the NWSL, on the list.The winners will be announced in a ceremony at the London Palladium Theatre on October 26.

PSG go for three in a row as Champions League returns

Another UEFA Champions League season gets going this week with the beginning of the league phase as Paris Saint-Germain bid to join the tiny band of clubs to have won the competition three years running.PSG successfully defended their title last season when they beat Arsenal on penalties in Budapest, retaining the trophy they won for the first time in their history 12 months earlier.Luis Enrique's side have already secured their status as one of the competition's greatest teams by winning it back-to-back, something only Real Madrid had previously achieved since the inception of the modern Champions League in 1992.Winning three in a row would be on another level entirely. Real did exactly that under Zinedine Zidane between 2016 and 2018, The only other teams to manage such a feat are Ajax (1971-73) and Bayern Munich (1974-76), while Madrid also won the first five editions of the European Cup from 1956 to 1960."Our objectives are clear. I want to win important trophies and there are none more important than the Champions League," said Enrique, who also led Barcelona to glory in 2015.The back-to-back titles for the French giants have coincided with the introduction of the new Champions League format, with 36 teams in the league phase now playing eight games against eight different opponents. The Parisians struggled in the league phase in each of the last two campaigns, finishing outside the top eight and having to come through the additional play-off round to make the last 16.Tough draws were partly responsible for that, and PSG will face some familiar opponents this time in Manchester City, Barcelona and Aston Villa. With each passing year, the prospect of a team other than one of Europe's super clubs winning the Champions League seems more remote. Arsenal to take next step?The Premier League's financial strength means all of its representatives can be expected to feature prominently, with Arsenal chief among them. Over the last three years, the Gunners have lost in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and then the final. There is therefore a logical next step for Mikel Arteta's side,Arsenal topped the league phase last season with a perfect record. They have a tough start this time away to Napoli. There are five English clubs involved, with Manchester City and Liverpool joined by the returning Manchester United and Villa.Bayern Munich are formidable, while Jose Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid charged with the task of leading them back to continental glory. Barcelona are itching to get their hands on the trophy again. It is hard to see beyond one of those clubs, although Inter Milan could have a say and Atletico Madrid will be desperate to reach a final to be held in their stadium.The only club outside Spain, England, Germany, Italy and France to have won the Champions League in the last 30 years remains Mourinho's Porto in 2004. Plenty of new names will add freshness to the competition, including Como, who finished fourth in Serie A last season under Cesc Fabregas to qualify at the expense of AC Milan and Juventus.Viking Stavanger are in the Champions League proper for the first time after winning a first Norwegian title in 34 years. Sabah start with a trip to Old Trafford after winning a first Azerbaijani title and coming through four qualifying ties.Their manager, Valdas Dambrauskas, got into coaching with the money he made appearing on the Lithuanian version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. "Since I was 12, when I realised I will not be a professional player, I knew I wanted to be a football coach," he said. "I cannot guess what would have happened without this game, but I believe I would have found a way to achieve my dream."Sabah might not qualify for the next stage – although compatriots Qarabag did that last season – but just being in the league phase is worth almost 20mn euros ($23.2mn) at a minimum, significant sums for clubs from lesser leagues.The Champions League winners pocket around 90mn euros in prize money, before adding millions more, notably from television 2 it is understood PSG earned around 150mn euros for each of their last two victories.

Should he be re-elected, Gianni Infantino will continue to serve as head of world football until 2031.

Gianni Infantino will stand in next March's FIFA presidential election, despite the backlash over his now-abandoned plan to bring private investment into the World Cup, football's global governing body announced."The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027," a FIFA spokesperson said. "Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election."The 56-year-old Swiss has taken a pummelling since the announcement in late July of his short-lived FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan to bring private investment into FIFA events. But now for the first time since the plan became public, FIFA has reiterated Infantino's intention to run for a fourth and final term in next year's elections.Should he be re-elected, he will continue to serve as head of world football until 2031. Infantino is in Poland for the Women's Under-20 World Cup, but refused to answer queries about his future when questioned by journalists on Saturday.European body UEFA has accused Infantino of "criminal mismanagement" over the scheme and was the ringleader of the initial fightback to the announcement, including threatening to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the men's and women's World Cups, if it was not shelved.If UEFA withdrew its threat to boycott FIFA tournaments on August 27 – ahead of the Women's Under-20 World Cup in Poland – it remains absolute in its conviction that Infantino must depart his role.The European body has filed requests in the USA for the disclosure of documents related to the plan from FIFA and partners. If successful in gaining access to the documents, UEFA had said it intends to lodge a legal complaint in Switzerland, saying it has been assured the case would meet the requirements to be heard in a Swiss court.It has also found solid support from North American body CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in its actions against Infantino. The three confederations have kept up the pressure and collaborated on a no-holds-barred joint letter issued last month."Leadership in football is not a possession. It is not about holding – or demanding – power to be held," they wrote.CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani is widely seen as the likeliest challenger to Infantino – UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin has ruled himself out.Montagliani, a FIFA vice-president, had long been regarded as a close ally of Infantino, but there were signs, even before he distanced himself over the now-scrapped plan to allow private investment into World Cups, that he viewed FIFA's purpose somewhat differently to the Swiss.But Infantino is not without friends – 2034 World Cup hosts Saudi Arabia came out in support last month, with African football's governing body CAF and South America's CONMEBOL supportive, too.Earlier in September, FIFA also accused UEFA of a "smear campaign" and a "fishing expedition" against Infantino. As the only declared candidate so far for the election due to take place in Rabat, Infantino will need a simple majority of votes from the 211 federations affiliated to FIFA to extend his term of office, which began in 2016 and was renewed in 2023.Candidate nominations for next year's election must be submitted by November 18.

Champions Arsenal deliver statement fightback to end Chelsea's flying start

Arsenal delivered an emphatic response to Chelsea's emergence as potential Premier League title contenders with a 2-1 win that ended their rivals' unbeaten start yesterday.Mikel Arteta's side trailed to Morgan Rogers' second-minute goal in a pulsating London derby at the Emirates Stadium. But the champions showed why they are firm favourites to retain the title with a blistering response to that early setback.Kai Havertz bagged the equaliser against his former club midway through the first half and Martin Odegaard netted Arsenal's winner soon after the interval. It was a statement of intent from second-placed Arsenal, who have won all three league matches to sit behind leaders Manchester City on goal scored.The Gunners' mature display underlined their desire to win the club's first back-to-back titles since the 1930s. For Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, the defeat ended his three-game winning run in all competitions since taking charge at Stamford Bridge in the close-season.Alonso will realise just how much work Chelsea still have to do before they are in position to end a title drought dating back to 2017. Chelsea's shaky defence is prone to costly miscues, while their vaunted attack found it harder to flourish against Arsenal than in their free-scoring wins over Fulham, Luton and Brighton.Arteta and Alonso have known each other since their days as childhood friends in the Basque region of Spain. The chaotic matches of their youth on a gravel pitch in the Berio district of San Sebastian would have seemed calm in comparison to the blood and thunder their teams brought to a raucous corner of north London.Chelsea beat Arsenal in the race to sign Rogers from Aston Villa in the close-season after the Gunners refused to match the Blues' £117mn ($158mn) bid for the England midfielder. Rogers showed why Chelsea made him the most expensive British player in history as he put the Blues ahead after just 77 seconds.Arsenal's rock-solid defence had allowed just one shot on target in their first two games. So often masters of the set-piece, Arteta's men were found wanting at a free-kick for once.Reece James' lofted delivery wasn't cleared by Declan Rice or Odegaard, giving Rogers the chance to drive a low volley past David Raya from the edge of the penalty area. It was the first goal conceded by Arsenal this season.Having conceded five times in their first two league games under Alonso, Chelsea's three-man central defence remains flawed and they were exposed again in the 25th minute. Havertz was allowed to drift from the right flank to the edge of the area unchecked by Jorrel Hato before the German smashed a low strike through the slow to react Maxence Lacroix's legs and past Emiliano Martinez at his near post.Pedro Neto was inches away from restoring Chelsea's lead just before half-time when the Portugal winger slapped his shot against the far post. Where Chelsea were profligate, Arsenal have developed a ruthless touch in front of goal.They exploited Chelsea's weakness at the back to net with a superb-crafted move in the 50th minute. Christos Tzolis has made an impressive start following his close-season move from Club Brugge and the Greek winger's incisive pass sliced through the Chelsea defence to Havertz.The German's clever dummy let the ball run through to Odegaard and he kept his composure to slot home from 10 yards.Rogers' angry clash with Rice prompted mocking chants of "you should have signed for a big club" from Arsenal fans. Chelsea had chances to silence the taunts, but Malo Gusto blazed over from a good position before Estevao Willian's rocket was tipped over by Raya in the final minutes.Earlier, Ainsley Maitland-Niles marked his Everton debut with a superb strike with virtually the last kick of the game to snatch a 2-2 draw for the Toffees against Manchester United.Maitland-Niles's arrival from Lyon on the final day of the transfer window was overshadowed by Everton's failure to reinforce their attack. But the former Arsenal full-back lasered a long-range shot into the top corner in the 96th minute to punish a lacklustre United performance.Bryan Mbeumo fired United in front inside the first minute of the second period. But an Everton side short on attacking options rallied to level through Tyrique George.Substitute Benjamin Sesko's header looked to have won United all three points. But the decision not to reinforce Michael Carrick's defence will face more scrutiny as United have conceded twice in all of their opening three games of the Premier League season.

The victory aganist Al Wakrah marked Lusail’s first in the top flight since their establishment and promotion to the First Division after winning the Second Division League title last season.

Lusail cruise past Wakrah to make history with first QSL win

Lusail secured their first Qatar Stars League victory in emphatic fashion, thrashing Al Wakrah 4-0 at Lusail Stadium, while Al Shamal produced a late comeback to beat 10-man Al Shahania 4-2 in an eventful third-round clash at Al Bayt Stadium.The victory marked Lusail’s first in the top flight since their establishment and promotion to the First Division after winning the Second Division League title last season. Lusail began their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Al Rayyan before drawing 3-3 with Al Ahli. Friday’s emphatic victory lifted the newly promoted side to four points, while Al Wakrah remain on one point and are still searching for their first win of the campaign.Hamidreza Firouzi opened the scoring in the 12th minute for Lusail, firing a right-footed effort into the top-left corner after meeting a cross from Amin Pilali.Lusail doubled their advantage seven minutes later when Rodrigo Moreno converted from the penalty spot after Al Wakrah defender Ali Al Mahdi brought down the goal-bound Firouzi.The hosts extended their lead just before half-time, with Firouzi turning provider as Farhad Zavoshi rifled home from a difficult angle on the left. Lusail continued to dominate after the break, with Zavoshi completing his brace in the 57th minute to seal a convincing victory and compound Al Wakrah's misery. **media[487522]**At Al Bayt Stadium, Al Shamal scored three late goals to overturn a 2-1 deficit and beat Al Shahania 4-2.Al Shamal took the lead in the 25th minute when Abdelkarim Hassan struck from outside the box, but Al Shahania equalised from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time through Francesco Antonucci.Abdoulaye Traore then put Al Shahania ahead in the 54th minute after earlier having a goal ruled out for offside.The turning point came in the 72nd minute when Al Shahania were reduced to 10 men after Andreas Van Beek was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Baghdad Bounedjah.Al Shamal capitalised late, with Mowafak Awad scoring twice in the 80th and 90th minutes. He first connected with a Mohamed Ben Romdhane assist before converting Abdullah Al Ahrak's cross from close range.Bounedjah completed the comeback in the 10th minute of added time, racing onto a through ball before beating the goalkeeper to make it 4-2.The victory was Al Shamal's second of the season and moved them to seven points, while Al Shahania remain on three. Sadd face Gharafa, Rayyan meet Al DuhailDefending champions Al Sadd, who have won both of their league matches and reached the Qatar Cup final, face Al Gharafa Saturday, while Al Rayyan take on Al Duhail. Al Sadd coach Razvan Lucescu expects a demanding encounter against Al Gharafa, just three days after their Qatar Cup semi-final."We are playing another match three days after the Qatar Cup semi-final, but the team and players are ready to take on the challenge in order to achieve victory," Lucescu said.The Romanian added that Al Sadd's objective is clear - to win and continue their positive start - while stressing that the league encounter would be different from their recent Qatar Cup meeting.Al Gharafa coach Pedro Martins said his side had focused on tactical and strategic preparations during training. "We made some mistakes in the match against Al Sadd in the Qatar Cup, but it was an open and balanced match as we expected," Martins said."We must address the mistakes we made and avoid repeating them. I expect the match to be intense and open, with both teams adopting an attacking approach and relentlessly pursuing victory."Martins also stressed the importance of taking chances against the champions. "In matches like these, we must increase our attacking efficiency in front of goal and strive to capitalise on opportunities, because small details make all the difference. Playing against a team like Al Sadd also requires a high level of concentration throughout the entire match," he said.In the other fixture, Al Duhail coach Djamel Belmadi said his side are prepared for a difficult test against Al Rayyan at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium. "The Al Rayyan match is considered one of the difficult matches in the league. We are preparing well for this type of match and we seek to appear in the appropriate manner," Belmadi said.He acknowledged Al Rayyan's quality and history, adding that there was little to separate the two sides. "Certainly, there are slight differences between the two teams, and I don't see a big difference, but overall, the match will be difficult against a complete team that is one of the most prominent and distinguished teams in the league," he said.Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno, meanwhile, is confident his side can maintain their winning start. "We are facing a very important match because we will be playing against a very good team, and we need to give our best if we want to win tomorrow, and I have confidence in my team," Moreno said.He added: "I told the players at the beginning of the season that it was very important to win the first league games and now we have a very good chance to win our third game, and I am sure that we will play a good game."Moreno also pointed to his side's greater recovery time, noting that Al Rayyan had more rest than Al Duhail following the latter's Qatar Cup semi-final, but remained confident his players would deliver.

PSG record most lucrative transfer window in club history

Paris Saint-Germain have completed the most lucrative transfer window in the club’s history, generating more than €400 million from player departures.The figure is also among the highest ever recorded by a European club in a single transfer window, underlining the scale of PSG’s transformation both on and off the pitch.Six players left the French champions this summer, yet none had started either of the club’s last two Champions League finals. While several of Europe’s biggest sellers were forced to part with key first-team players to balance their books, PSG managed to generate a record return largely by selling squad players.The departures have highlighted the growing value of PSG’s squad depth and the club’s increasingly sophisticated approach to the transfer market.The six departures were Bradley Barcola to Liverpool for €145mn, GonCalo Ramos to AC Milan for €75mn plus €15mn in bonuses, Ibrahim Mbaye to Aston Villa for €60mn, Randal Kolo Muani to Juventus for €6mn after an €8mn loan spell at Tottenham, Lee Kang-in to Atletico Madrid for €40mn and Noham Kamara to Lyon for €4.1mn.Fees include reported bonuses and associated payments. The six players had cost PSG just under €210mn to acquire, meaning the club has generated close to €200mn in capital gains within a few years. The figures underline how PSG have turned squad depth into a significant financial asset, creating substantial transfer value without having to dismantle the core of a team that has won back-to-back Champions League titles and UEFA Super Cups.This summer is not an outlier. PSG ranks third in Europe for combined revenues from player departures over the last five summer transfer windows, with €788.55mn, behind Chelsea (€1.15bn) and Manchester City (€845mn). Over the last five seasons combined, the club again ranks third, with €855.6mn, behind Chelsea (€1.20bn) and Manchester City (€886mn).During the last ten summer windows, PSG ranks third with €1.15bn, behind Chelsea (€1.75bn) and Manchester City (€1.16bn). Across the course of the last ten seasons, the club ranks fourth with €1.25bn, behind Chelsea (€1.97bn), Benfica (€1.50bn) and Manchester City (€1.30bn). These figures illustrate the evolution of the club’s model. One that is now capable not only of attracting talent, but of developing players and creating significant value around their careers in Paris.The club’s recent strategy reflects greater financial discipline and patience in the transfer market. PSG allowed Gianluigi Donnarumma to leave despite widespread scepticism, then went on to win the Champions League again. The club waited six months to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at half the original asking price, walked away from deals for Zion Suzuki and Yan Diomande when the terms no longer made sense, and brought Xavi Simons back to the club before selling him for a significant profit.None of this has come at the expense of sporting ambition. PSG continues to build a team capable of competing for every major trophy while increasing the value of its players, showing that sporting success and transfer revenue can go hand in hand rather than work against each other. Homegrown value, shared successThe summer has also highlighted the growing importance of the club’s Academy. Ibrahim Mbaye and Noham Kamara both came through the youth system, having been identified, developed and integrated into an ambitious first-team project before generating significant value for the club. The Academy pipeline is now an integral part of PSG’s model.The transformation extends beyond the squad and balance sheet to the club’s culture. Last week, PSG announced a collective bonus for all employees in recognition of the 2025-26 season, underlining the club’s belief that its achievements belong to everyone who contributes to its success.Continuity has been equally important. The stability of the coach, president and sporting director - something rare at PSG in the past and increasingly uncommon in modern football - has been fundamental to the club’s progress. Leadership and visionNasser al-Khelaifi, president of PSG and chairman of Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), was personally involved in all five of the club’s major operations this summer, negotiating directly at ownership level with Liverpool, Juventus, AC Milan, Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa.His network of relationships, ability to build trust at the highest levels of the game and business acumen played a key role in PSG’s transfer-window strategy.Eight years ago, PSG was the buyer behind another club’s record-breaking summer. This summer, it recorded the most lucrative transfer window in its own history.The contrast tells the story of a club that once bought its ambition but now develops it, protects it and, when the time is right, sells from a position of strength.

Arsenal boss Arteta relishing first duel with Chelsea's Alonso

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is relishing the prospect of facing long-time friend Xabi Alonso in the Premier League for the first time when the defending champions host Chelsea on Sunday.Both sides have made perfect starts to the season, with Arsenal and Chelsea both taking six points from their opening two matches. Arteta and Alonso, both 44, grew up together in Spain's Basque Country and have remained close throughout their playing and coaching careers.The pair first faced each other as managers in a friendly in 2024 when Alonso was in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, but Sunday's encounter will be their first meeting in England's top flight."I am really happy for him. It's incredible because obviously we have the history we have together," Arteta told reporters ."To be facing each other at such a level and with the responsibility we have managing some of the top clubs in the country is a really beautiful thing to experience."Chelsea's attack has been impressive early in the campaign, with Morgan Rogers, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer all finding form in front of goal, but Arteta said controlling the flow of the game would be crucial."That will depend on a lot of factors and game state is a massive one, especially because the two games that they played, they scored very, very early and that changes the momentum and the shift of the game," Arteta said. "But they are capable and he's capable of playing in various ways. He’s been a really successful manager so far."Arsenal were linked with a number of high-profile attacking targets during the transfer window, including Rogers, Julian Alvarez and Vinicius Junior, but their only forward addition was Greece winger Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge.Arteta, however, brushed off suggestions that Arsenal had fallen short in the market. "I don't know, these are just opinions," the Spaniard said. "The window is closed and I prefer to look at all the incredible things that we have in this squad and not to spend any more time on the things that are not part of us right now. That's it and that's my main responsibility."Arsenal will lean heavily on the likes of Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres and Bukayo Saka but Arteta insisted the attack is not weaker compared to last season despite the departures of Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli"We have to understand the amount of minutes that those players played and the ones that were injured last year, especially in the first six months, and the data shows something completely different," Arteta said. "But it is what it is. It is what we have and, as I said before, we already have some very, very good players."Martinelli's departure for Saudi side Al Hilal in a reported £60mn ($81mn) deal ended the Brazilian's seven-year spell at Arsenal that saw him make nearly 300 appearances for the club. "He goes with our gratitude," said Arteta. "It's been a pleasure to work with him, to be part of this journey with him."
