Senegal might be celebrating their Africa Cup of Nations victory but will anxiously await possible sanctions for their walk-off during Sunday’s final against ‌Morocco. African football’s showpiece event was marred by most of the Senegal team walking off when, deep into injury time of normal play and with the match locked at 0-0, Morocco were awarded a spot-kick following a VAR check by referee Jean-Jacques Ndala for a challenge on Brahim Diaz. As a group of their enraged fans fought with Moroccan security personnel at the other end of the stadium, Senegal’s players eventually returned to the pitch to see Diaz shoot a soft penalty into the arms of their goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Senegal went on to win the final with a brilliant goal from Pape Gueye in extra time, stunning the vast majority of the 66,526 fans at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. But their actions have been widely condemned, including by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the Confederation of African Football. Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw, who ordered his players off, and some ‌of those who went to the changing room can expect to face disciplinary charges. With a trip to the World Cup next for Senegal, ‍they will be concerned the manager and ‌key players could be suspended for matches at the finals in Canada, Mexico and the US in June. Senegal’s opening two games against France and Norway are in New York. Thiaw has expressed belated regret for his actions, although a chance to address the post-match press conference after Sunday’s final was quickly ended when he was jeered by Moroccan journalists. But in a television interview, he said: “I don’t want to dwell on the events of the match. In hindsight, ​I really shouldn’t have ‌told my players to come off. I apologise for the sake of football. After further consideration, I brought them back ‍on. We know what happens behind the scenes,” he added, referring to conspiracy theories around hosts Morocco being favoured by the referee. “We can react in the heat of the moment, and we must also ask ourselves whether that was a penalty? Now, we ​accept the referee’s mistakes; it can happen. We shouldn’t have done it, but it’s done. Now, we apologise to football.” CAF said it was reviewing footage and that disciplinary proceedings will follow, adding that it “condemns the unacceptable behaviour from some players and officials.” “CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty,” African football’s governing body said in a statement. Morocco coach Walid Regragui was worried by the damage done globally to African football by the chaotic final. “The image we gave of African football was rather shameful. Having to stop the game for more than 10 minutes with the world watching is not very classy,” he said. Infantino’s statement appeared to be designed to avoid criticising Senegal’s former Liverpool star Sadio Mane, who remained on the pitch and urged his teammates to return to the game for the penalty. “We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members,” Infantino said. “It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport, it is simply not right.” 

Morocco’s Brahim Diaz has apologised for his Panenka penalty miss that cost his country the Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday, saying his “soul ‌hurts” and he took responsibility for the 1-0 ‌defeat by Senegal in ‍the decider in Rabat. Morocco were awarded a spot-kick in the 98th minute after Diaz was hauled to the ground by defender El Hadji Malick Diouf, an ‍incident that sparked ugly scenes in the stands and on the pitch. It followed five minutes after a disallowed goal at the other end and the decision, made on Video Assistant Referee review, resulted in some Senegal players leaving the pitch in protest, encouraged by their coach ‌Pape Bouna Thiaw. It took over 14 minutes for calm to be restored and the game to resume, only for Diaz to ‍inexplicably attempt a weak ⁠chipped penalty that ‌was easily caught by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. It proved one of the last actions before the game went to extra time and Senegal triumphed thanks to Pape Gueye’s superb winner. “Yesterday I failed, and I take full responsibility and apologise with all my heart,” Diaz said via X. “It will be hard for me to recover because this wound does not heal easily, but I will try. Not for myself, but for all ​who believed in me ‌and for all who suffered with me. I will keep going until someday I can give back all ‍this love and be a pride for my Moroccan people.” Diaz, 26, plays for Real Madrid having been born in Malaga and also won a cap for Spain before switching allegiances to Morocco in 2024. He finished as the leading scorer in ​the 2025 Cup of Nations after netting a goal in each of Morocco’s first five games at the tournament. Morocco’s 50-year wait for the continental title will continue at least until the 2027 tournament. Named after Czech footballer Antonin Panenka, the style of spot-kick is one where the player gently chips the ball into the centre of the goal rather than powerfully to either side, hoping the keeper will commit to diving.

The Organizing Committee for Qatar-UAE Super Cup unveiled details of the tournament’s third edition, which brings together clubs from Qatar and the UAE, at a Press Conference held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Torch Hotel. Present were representatives of Organizing Committee – Ahmed Al Adsani, Director of Competitions, Abdullah al-Minhali, Facility Manager, and Ali Hassan Al Salat, Media Manager. The conference reviewed preparations for the two matches to be held in Doha – Al Gharafa vs Sharjah (UAE) in Super Cup and Al Sadd vs Shabab Al Ahli in Super Shield.Al-Minhali confirmed that the Al Gharafa vs Sharjah match would be played on January 22 (kick-off 7pm) at Thani Bin Jassim Stadium, with gates opening to fans at 4pm.He emphasized the readiness of facilities and the full co-ordination with security authorities. He added that the Al Sadd vs Shabab Al Ahli match (kick-off 7pm) would be played on January 24 at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, confirming that designated fan zones have been set up at both stadiums, and fan activities and prize draws would be organized in co-ordination with competing clubs. On his part, Al-Adsani explained that the tournament features four teams from each country. He noted that the matches are played in a knockout format, with penalty kicks immediately following a draw at the end of regular time. The tournament winners will receive a cash prize of QR4mn and runners-up QR2mn. He emphasized that there are incentives specifically designed to encourage attendance and enhance the tournament’s competitive atmosphere. The Organizing Committee reviews the regulations after each edition and works to improve the tournament’s technical and organizational aspects to ensure the best possible outcome. Al-Salat said the tickets had been on sale since January 11 through online platforms of UAE Pro League and Qatar Stars League. He explained that 75 per cent of the tickets for Al Sadd vs Shabab Al Ahli match and 50 per cent of the tickets for Al Gharafa vs Sharjah match had already been sold out, with sales expected to increase on conclusion of Week 13 of Doha Bank Stars League. He added the co-ordination with Hayya platform to issue media accreditation cards in the coming days, noting that Al Kass channels would broadcast the matches as Host Broadcaster along with Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi channels, using more than 20 cameras to cover the event. Al-Salat thanked the tournament’s official sponsors, most notably Visit Qatar, official sponsor for three seasons, Air Arabia as official airline sponsor, Ooredoo as telecommunications partner, and Jetour Motors in addition to fan zones set up by companies such as Hardee’s, Red Bull and Jetour on the sidelines of competitions. 

Hosts Morocco and Senegal will fight it out in a heavyweight Africa Cup of Nations final this weekend after tense last-four victories on Wednesday, but Mohamed Salah is left wondering if his dream of winning the title will forever remain unfulfilled.The tournament has delivered a final showdown for the trophy between Africa's two modern footballing powerhouses, the continent's best sides according to the FIFA rankings. For Morocco, winners on penalties against Nigeria following a 0-0 draw in their semi-final in Rabat, their run to this stage feels like a natural progression after Walid Regragui's side became the first African and Arab team to reach the World Cup semi-finals in 2022.They have not lost since a shock exit from the 2024 AFCON to South Africa in the last 16 and are currently 11th in the world rankings, above Italy. Morocco boast the reigning African player of the year in Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi and are looking to add the AFCON title to a list of recent successes: they won the Under-20 World Cup in October and the Arab Cup last month, as well as Olympic bronze in 2024.They were for a long time African football's big underachievers, with their only Cup of Nations title to date coming in 1976 – since then they have reached just one final, when Regragui was a player in 2004.The Atlas Lions have not always been a scintillating watch in their home tournament and have even been whistled by their own supporters, while Regragui regularly faces criticism despite his success since being appointed in August 2022.But the only goal they have conceded in six matches came from a penalty in a group-stage draw with Mali, while in Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz they have arguably the competition's outstanding player. "Obviously there are higher expectations on us after we got to the World Cup semi-finals and I know I will also be criticised if I lose the final," Regragui accepted as he spoke to media.His team have also qualified for a third straight World Cup and the country is preparing to co-host the 2030 edition with Spain and Portugal. "This is the golden age of Moroccan football but we must not forget where we have come from," Regragui added.It is also a golden age for Senegal, the 2022 African champions who beat Egypt 1-0 in the semis thanks to Sadio Mane's goal in Tangiers. The Lions of Teranga have qualified for a third straight World Cup too, and this is their third final in four editions of AFCON – they lost to Algeria in Cairo in 2019.Senegal, who are 19th in the world rankings, were considered on paper to be the most obvious threat to Morocco's chances of winning the title on home soil and have also constructed their success here on a strong defence that has conceded just two goals.However, unlike Morocco this is an ageing team, with 33-year-old Mane saying on Wednesday that this would be his last AFCON. "Let's hope we still have him for a few more years," insisted Senegal coach Pape Thiaw. "I hope it is not his last final."Salah, meanwhile, may need time to come to terms with falling short at yet another Cup of Nations. He turns 34 this year and came to Morocco hoping desperately for success with his country at a time when his club future at Liverpool is so uncertain.Salah's Cup of Nations record is littered with disappointment, with defeats in the final in 2017 and in 2022, and a last-16 exit when Egypt hosted in 2019. His last AFCON, two years ago in Ivory Coast, ended early with a hamstring injury.Now he has fallen short again, and seven-time champions Egypt are still without a title since 2010. Salah can still look forward to leading the Pharaohs at the World Cup, and he will surely try to rouse himself for at least one more AFCON – the next edition in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda is set for next year after all.

Bangladesh’s cricket board said Tuesday it had repeated its refusal to travel to India for next month’s T20 World Cup during talks with the ICC governing body. With ties tense between the two countries, Bangladesh wants the International Cricket Council to shift their World Cup games from India to co-hosts Sri Lanka, citing security concerns.The World Cup begins on February 7 and Bangladesh are scheduled to play their four group matches in India. The row erupted on January 3, when India forced Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman to quit the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mustafizur, who has played in the IPL for other teams in previous editions, was snapped up at auction in December by Kolkata for more than $1mn. His sacking sparked fury in Dhaka.Tuesday, during a video conference with the ICC, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said it had “reiterated its request for the ICC to consider relocating Bangladesh’s matches outside India”. Political relations between India and Bangladesh soured after a mass uprising in Dhaka in 2024 toppled then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, a close ally of New Delhi. India’s foreign ministry last month condemned what it called “unremitting hostility against minorities” in Muslim-majority Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, has accused India of exaggerating the scale of the violence. “The BCB reaffirmed its position regarding the decision not to travel to India, citing security concerns,” the BCB said in a statement. “While the ICC highlighted that the tournament itinerary has already been announced and requested the BCB to reconsider its stance, the Board’s position remains unchanged,” the statement added. The ICC have not commented. The BCB said discussions with the ICC continue to “explore possible solutions”, it added, but that it “remains committed to safeguarding the well-being of its players, officials and staff”.Bangladesh, led by Litton Das, are placed ninth in the ICC T20 rankings. They have played all the nine editions of the tournament, but have never qualified for the semi-finals. 

Alyssa Healy, a mainstay of Australia’s dominant women’s cricket team for 15 years and latterly its captain, ‌has announced that she will retire from the ‌game after the upcoming ‍multi-format series against India. The 35-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was part of two one-day international World Cup triumphs and six successful T20 World Cup campaigns before taking over as skipper ‍after the retirement of Meg Lanning in late 2023. “It’s with mixed emotions that the upcoming India series will be my last for Australia,” she said in a statement Tuesday. “I’m still passionate about playing for Australia, but I’ve somewhat lost that competitive edge that’s kept me ‌driven since the start, so the time feels right to call it a day.“I’ll genuinely miss my teammates, singing the team ‍song and walking out to open the ‌batting for Australia.” Healy made her Australia debut in 2010 and scored 3,563 runs with seven centuries in one-day internationals and 3,054 with a single hundred in Twenty20s for her country, as well as making 275 dismissals behind the stumps. As a mark of her status in Australia, Healy was never defined by her relationship with her uncle, Australia wicketkeeping great Ian, nor her husband, Test paceman Mitchell Starc. Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ​led the tributes after ‌her announcement. “Alyssa Healy is a true legend of Australian cricket. As a batter, keeper and captain she ‍has been one of the brightest stars in a golden era,” he said in a statement. “Yet Alyssa’s impact and example off the field has been every bit as important. She has helped drive and grow women’s cricket and inspired a ​new generation along the way.” Healy had already announced her retirement from T20 internationals and will play her last matches for Australia in three ODIs and a single Test against India in February and March. Women’s cricket has come on in leaps and bounds during Healy’s career but, despite having missed only two for Australia since her debut in January 2011, her final match will be only her 11th Test.
