Four teams out of six eliminated, with a total of 28 goals conceded over the two legs – it has been a chastening week for most of England’s representatives in the Champions League knockout phase. Only Arsenal, the Premier League leaders, and Liverpool – the English team with the richest history in Europe – reached the quarter-finals. Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur were sent packing. But does this really merit calling into question the standard of the Premier League? England’s top flight is easily the richest in Europe, with domestic and international broadcasting rights revenues dwarfing the rest. A report last month by UEFA showed television revenue for English top-flight clubs increased by 1.5bn euros ($1.77bn) from 2014-2024 – the combined figure for the rest of Europe was almost the same. Fifteen of the 30 richest clubs in analysts Deloitte’s latest Football Money League are English. However, three of the four English teams eliminated in the last 16 this week lost to clubs with larger revenues. The exception was Tottenham, but they are having a dreadful season and so losing 7-5 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid was no surprise. City, champions in 2023, lost 5-1 on aggregate to Real Madrid, the record 15-time European Cup winners and the only club with revenue over one billion euros in Deloitte’s latest table. Chelsea were crushed 8-2 on aggregate by reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, while Newcastle lost 8-3 overall against Barcelona. There have only been three occasions since 1955 in which an English team has conceded at least eight goals on aggregate in a European tie, two of them this week. England’s strength in depth is unrivalled, and shown by the presence of an unprecedented six sides in the last 16. But this level is also the territory of a small band of giant continental clubs perhaps not subject to the same levels of competitiveness in their domestic leagues. The four clubs with the highest revenue in Europe last year were Real, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG – they generate more money than anyone in England, and enjoy huge financial advantages over domestic rivals. Nineteen of the last 21 Spanish titles have been won by Madrid or Barcelona. Over the same period the duo have won a combined 10 Champions Leagues. Qatar-owned PSG have won 11 of the last 13 French championships and won their first Champions League last year after one final appearance and two semi-finals in the preceding five seasons. Bayern, who hammered Atalanta 10-2 on aggregate this week, are set for a 13th Bundesliga title in 14 years. They are also now almost always in the Champions League quarter-finals, and next face Real in a mouthwatering tie. For all the Premier League’s pulling power, few match-ups have the same appeal as that impending confrontation. “Both clubs are giant,” said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. Bayern have been helped by a strategy of signing a big Premier League name in each of the last three seasons: Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. Kane’s status as England’s leading player is maybe threatened only by Jude Bellingham, who was joined last year at Real by Trent Alexander-Arnold, lured from Liverpool. PSG boast Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, and in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia they have a player who has terrorised English defences over the last year. “In the Premier League, we don’t have Dembele, (Desire) Doue, (Bradley) Barcola and Kvaratskhelia,” said Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior. “They’re an outstanding team.” They are also youthful like Barcelona, who are once more leaning heavily on their academy, La Masia – their average age against Newcastle was barely 25, and in 18-year-old Lamine Yamal they have the emerging global footballing superstar. “La Masia did a fantastic job there,” purred Barca coach Hansi Flick. Those clubs may be best equipped to dominate in Europe, while Liverpool and Arsenal fly the flag for England which has provided only three of the last 13 continental champions. But the Premier League will be there en masse again next year – i t is on course to have five qualifying spots via the league and may again have a sixth if Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest win the Europa League. 

Arne Slot insists he can win back the support of Liverpool's frustrated fans after admitting he "must have done a lot of things wrong".Slot has come under fire throughout Liverpool's dismal Premier League title defence and the Reds boss will face increased scrutiny if his side crash out of the Champions League against Galatasaray Wednesday.Liverpool were booed off after conceding a 90th-minute equaliser to struggling Tottenham on Sunday, leaving Slot to answer questions about his Anfield future when he faced reporters. While the mood on social media has been anti-Slot for several months, the draw with Tottenham marked the first time Liverpool fans had been so vocal in their criticism."It's never nice they are frustrated because usually fans are not frustrated after you win," Slot said. "People told me when I came here that they will support the manager for such a long time, but if you are supposing something then I must have done a lot of things wrong. That's never a nice feeling to have because being in the club that's always so supportive for the manager, in good and bad times, then if they are not happy with me, then apparently I've done so many things wrong."Slot led Liverpool to the English title in a superb first season in charge after replacing the beloved Jurgen Klopp. But the Dutch coach has been criticised for Liverpool's lack of cutting edge and defensive flaws in a turbulent second campaign. The Reds, who sit in fifth place in the Premier League, must overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit against Galatasaray at Anfield to keep the pressure on Slot from building further."I did something wrong in the season that we won the league and I definitely did maybe make a few decisions that were not perfect in hindsight," Slot said. "But all the decisions I've made, I've always made for the same reason, for us trying to win the game. But I also know how the football industry works. Winning can change a lot. That's what we are trying to achieve tomorrow and we're completely ready for that."Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher this week questioned whether Slot's players are unified and willing to fight for the club. But Slot is adamant his squad remain fully committed to the Liverpool cause. "I should have seen why he said it, did he have examples? I agree with a lot of things Jamie has said throughout the season. This particular one I disagree with," he said."I need to go into details which I am not prepared to do. But it's not like we are playing like 11 individuals, if he meant that. I see a team that is fighting together. That is my opinion. A team that has given up, a team of individuals that doesn't work together doesn't show that resilience after our 120th setback this season. That's a bit exaggerating but we have had many."Liverpool have lost twice to Galatasaray in Istanbul this season, but Slot hopes their first meeting on Merseyside will lift the gloom at Anfield. "The good thing for us is we have the support of our fans, which will be supportive again tomorrow because that is what they have always been and will always be for this club," he said.For a club whose anthem is 'you'll never walk alone', Slot could be forgiven for feeling isolated by Liverpool fans lately. But he struck a hopeful tone as he said: "I've never felt alone since I've been here." 

Arsenal moved a step closer to the Premier League title as Max Dowman became the competition’ youngest ever goalscorer in a dramatic 2-0 win against Everton, while Chelsea’s top four bid was dented a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle. Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to break down obdurate Everton until the closing moments at the Emirates Stadium. But Sweden forward Viktor Gyokeres finally found a way through in the 89th minute, with a helping hand from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Pickford completely missed Dowman’s cross and Piero Hincapie bundled the ball back into the six-yard box for Gyokeres to tap into the empty net. The ensuing scenes of delirium on the pitch and in the stands underlined the significance of Arsenal’s fourth successive league win. There was still time for Dowman to run the length of the pitch and slot home with Pickford nowhere to be seen after coming up for an Everton corner that ended in a rapid Arsenal counter-attack in the final seconds. Dowman, aged just 16, is the youngest scorer in the history of the Premier League, as well as Arsenal’s youngest scorer. Gyokeres on Dowman’s said: “It’s incredible. You can see how he plays. He stays so calm and without fear every time he gets the ball. He takes the right decision most of the time as well and with the goal, he definitely took the right one. He’s an amazing player, it was a great goal for him and I’m so happy for him.” The Gunners are now 10 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who were facing West Ham at the London Stadium in the day’s late kick-off. Arsenal, trophyless since 2020, are hunting a first English title in 22 years. The quadruple chasers rode their luck to beat Everton despite a disjointed performance, adding to the mounting feeling that they will be one of the least stylistically impressive champions in recent memory if they do take the crown. But Arteta and company won’t care about that ahead of a huge week. The Gunners have a Champions League last-16 second leg against Bayer Leverkusen next week with the tie level at 1-1 before heading to Wembley to face City in the League Cup final. Arsenal don’t play in the league again until April 11 when they meet Bournemouth. City’s clash with West Ham is the first of their two games in hand on Arsenal, with Pep Guardiola’s men also hosting the leaders in April. City must bounce back from their midweek Champions League last-16 first leg defeat at Real Madrid in a match of significance at both ends of the table. West Ham sit in the relegation zone but can leapfrog Nottingham Forest and Tottenham with victory over City. Fifth-placed Chelsea were beaten by Anthony Gordon’s goal at Stamford Bridge to round off a painful week. Thrashed 5-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 first leg, Liam Rosenior’s side were breached in the 18th minute when Tino Livramento’s pass allowed Joe Willock to burst clear and tee up Gordon for a composed finish. Chelsea trail Aston Villa and Manchester United by three points having played a game more than their top-four rivals. Brighton beat Sunderland 1-0 to climb into the top half of the Premier League, while second-bottom Burnley held Bournemouth in a 0-0 draw. Sunderland were unbeaten in their first 11 home games back in the top flight but have now lost their last three at the Stadium of Light to slip to 12th. Yankuba Minteh scored the only goal when his shot somehow squeezed past goalkeeper Melker Ellborg at his near post. Brighton move above the Black Cats on goal difference and into 10th. The stalemate at Turf Moor did little for either side as Burnley slip closer to relegation and Bournemouth failed to move in on the European places. The Clarets are eight points adrift of safety with eight games remaining. Bournemouth remain in ninth, three points behind Brentford in what is likely to be the final European spot in seventh. 

Indian Premier League champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will start the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad at ‌the Chinnaswamy Stadium on March ​28 after the ‌Indian cricket board Wednesday ‌announced the schedule ‌for the first phase ‌of the campaign. The BCCI released only the first phase of the schedule, covering matches from March 28 to April 12, as three states are scheduled to undergo State Assembly elections. The remaining fixtures will be released once the poll ​dates are announced. Mumbai Indians, joint record five-times champions, launch their campaign at home to the ‌Kolkata Knight Riders on March ​29. Fellow five-time winners Chennai Super ​Kings begin the following day when they travel to face the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. Matches in Bengaluru remain subject to clearance from an expert committee nominated by the Government of Karnataka. The Chinnaswamy Stadium has not staged any cricket with fans since a stampede ‌killed 11 people ‌in June while RCB supporters were celebrating the team’s maiden IPL title outside the arena. RCB are slated to play five home matches in Bengaluru and two in Raipur during this year’s IPL. “The committee will conduct a meeting and inspection of ​the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 13, 2026, during which a full-scale mock demonstration of match-day arrangements will be carried out to assess the stadium’s preparedness for hosting IPL matches,” the BCCI said in a statement. The IPL runs from March 28 ‌to May ​31. 

Mikel Arteta slammed Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler's claim that Arsenal "make their own rules" after the Premier League leaders moved a step closer to the title with a 1-0 win at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday.Bukayo Saka's deflected strike early in the first half sealed Arsenal's third successive victory. The Gunners are seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who were held to a surprise 2-2 draw by lowly Nottingham Forest.Arteta have complete control of the title race as they chase a first English crown since 2004 after three consecutive runners-up finishes. But if Arsenal do go on to claim the title it is highly unlikely they will be held in the same regard as Arsene Wenger's squad 22 years ago.In contrast to the eye-catching style of the 'Invincibles', there is little to love about Arteta's prosaic team, who have thrived thanks to their set-piece excellence and a supremely well-drilled defence. Criticism of Arsenal's 'ugly' tactics is growing and Hurzeler was the latest to join the chorus as he accused the Gunners of time-wasting and faking injuries.Hurzeler was frustrated by Arsenal's habit of delaying the restart of the game at free-kicks. Gunners keeper David Raya also went down injured on three separate occasions and required treatment, sparking suggestions he was faking to allow time for tactical discussions between Arteta and his players."I think there was only one team that tried to play football today. Did you see in a Premier League game a goalkeeper going down that many times? No?" Hurzeler said. "They (Arsenal) make their own rules. At the moment I have the feeling they are doing their own rules. I will never be the kind of manager who tries to win in that way. If I ask everyone in the room, did he really enjoy this game? I'm sure maybe one raises his arm because he's a big Arsenal fan. Where will this go in the future? Is this what the supporters are paying for?"Yet Arteta was unrepentant about Arsenal's game plan, insisting his players deserved praise for grinding out another vital victory. "What a surprise," he said when informed of Hurzeler's claims. "If you go back through previous games you will find a lot of comments like this, always. I love my players. That's the highlight. I love my players and I love the way we compete. When you're in the position we are in, obviously the opposition want to take that away from you. That's normal, that is sport."Arsenal aren't earning many style points, but Arteta doesn't care as they remain in contention for the quadruple. As well as leading the Premier League, the Gunners face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League last 16, meet Manchester City in the League Cup final and visit Mansfield in the FA Cup fifth round.Asked whether he cared what other managers thought of him, Arteta replied: "No comment." 

Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz has been ruled out of today’s game at bottom side Wolverhampton ‌Wanderers in the Premier League ​but Dutch full-back ‌Jeremie Frimpong is available, manager ‌Arne Slot has ‌said. Wirtz, who suffered a ‌back injury warming up ahead of last month’s visit to Nottingham Forest, missed the 5-2 home win over West Ham United on Saturday. “I think that (Tuesday’s game) will be too early,” Slot told reporters with fifth-placed Liverpool targeting ​a fourth straight league win when they visit Wolves. “I didn’t expect him (Wirtz) not to be ‌available for today, so sometimes ​things can develop in a positive ​or negative way in an injury, now we are thinking it doesn’t have to be too long, but Tuesday will probably be too early. The week after will be tight as things stand now.” Frimpong made an encouraging impact off the bench against West Ham ‌during the final ‌minutes but Slot was cautious regarding his workload during a packed schedule. “Having Jeremie back is really nice but it (injury) does go through your mind because we play three games in seven days ... especially with players coming back from injuries,” Slot ​said. “I prefer to have this problem ... rather than see him with the medical staff working on his recovery.” While Wolves have only two wins this season, Slot cautioned against complacency, noting their competitiveness. “We know that we are going to face a difficult ‌game tomorrow,” ​he added. Meanwhile, Slot said that the growing reliance on set pieces in the Premier League has sucked some of the joy out of football but accepts it is the new reality. Last season’s champions struggled with dead-ball situations both defensively and in attacking areas earlier in the campaign. But seven of their past nine Premier League goals have come from set pieces, including three following corners in Saturday’s 5-2 win against West Ham at Anfield. Premier League leaders Arsenal are renowned as the set-piece kings and on Sunday scored their 16th goal from a corner this season – equalling the league record. “First of all, you have to accept it. I think it’s mainly here in the Premier League,” Slot said. “If I watch other leagues, I don’t think there’s so much emphasis on set pieces.” The Liverpool manager said he felt goalkeepers in the Premier League were given less protection by match officials than those in other leagues such as the Dutch top division. “Here you can almost hit a goalkeeper in his face and the referee still says just go on,” said the Dutchman. “Do I like it? My football heart doesn’t like it.” Slot said he used to look forward to watching the great Barcelona side of Pep Guardiola, who were renowned for their silky, possession-based football. “Now, most of the games I see in the Premier League are not for me a joy to watch,” he said. “But it’s always interesting because it’s so competitive, and that is what makes this league great, because there’s so much competitiveness, everyone can beat everyone.” 

Mikel Arteta has hit back at critics of Arsenal's dependence on set-pieces, saying he is disappointed the Premier League leaders do not score even more goals from dead-ball situations.Arteta's side have established a five-point lead at the top of the league thanks in large part to their success from set-pieces. They equalled the Premier League single-season record for goals from corners with two in Sunday's 2-1 win over Chelsea to reach 16 for the campaign.But Arsenal's excellence since Nicolas Jover took over as set-piece coach has sparked criticism of their reliance on the tactic. The debate on whether set-pieces are ruining football as a spectacle is raging, with Liverpool boss Arne Slot revealing he no longer enjoys watching some Premier League matches.Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton, a Premier League title winner with Blackburn, said Arsenal will be the "ugliest" Premier League champions if they go on to clinch the title.Arteta is unrepentant, insisting his only concern about the use of set-pieces is making sure Arsenal are even more efficient with them. "I'm upset that we don't score more, and that we concede as well," he told reporters, on the eve of a trip to Brighton. "We want to be the best and the most dominant team in every aspect of the game, and that's the trajectory and the aim of this team, and as a club, we want to be the same. So we try to do that."Asked if he was surprised at the criticism aimed at his side, Arteta replied: "Part of the job."City manager Pep Guardiola believes teams should focus on adapting to the set-piece strategy rather than complaining about the issue. Arteta, who worked under Guardiola at City before joining Arsenal, agrees with his fellow Spaniard's assessment."Now teams are adapting. Chelsea, look at the quality that they have, the amount of set-pieces they score. Manchester United as well. I was at Man City, I used to work a lot on them," he said.Undeterred by the claims that Arsenal will be "ugly" champions, Arteta said: "I don't know how you celebrate one goal different to another one. Maybe for YouTube it's nicer one or another. I don't know."I would like to play with three players extra in my own half to get some beautiful football. This is not the reality of football. If you want to watch that football, you have to go to a different country because in the Premier League, for the last two seasons or three seasons, this is not the case." 

Tottenham interim boss Igor Tudor has admitted his struggling side are not fit enough as he pledged to "put some petrol in the engine" to avoid relegation.Tudor has arrived in north London with Tottenham embroiled in a battle to avoid playing in the second tier for the first time since 1977-78. Tottenham have won only two of their last 18 matches in the Premier League and sit just four points above the relegation zone ahead of today's trip to Fulham.Tudor, hired as a temporary replacement for the sacked Thomas Frank, knows his players' physical condition is a key to their hopes of beating the drop. Traditionally a coach who demands a high level of intensity, the Croatian conceded his squad haven't been able to match the required levels."Physically, I believe, we are not in an amazing situation," Tudor said. "They have played lots of games in the last period without lots of players available and it meant the physical condition of the team has dropped down. So, we need to use this period where we don't play the games to put some petrol in the engine so the engine starts to work better. They are fatigued. To do the pressing high you need to be fit, but all of them because if someone is not in the right shape, there is a problem because someone is coming late. For sure, we will improve and do these things better over time, but in this moment it's a big question what we can do and what we cannot do."Clips have already gone viral of Tudor getting Tottenham players to do runs in training in scenes reminiscent of pre-season. Given Tottenham's tendency to produce only one strong half of football in matches under Frank, their conditioning is not a new problem.Tudor pushed back at suggestions his methods may be too hard for them to cope with amid a gruelling season. "No, never punishing. That's the only way - running. The pitch is 100 yards. You say yards here, 100 yards, it's long, so you need to run," he said. "There are habits. Maybe you have habits to... I don't know... work a bit less? I put some runs without the ball. Players never like runs without the ball!" 

Pep Guardiola insists he “couldn’t care less” about Arsenal’s stumble letting Manchester City back into the Premier League title race. Guardiola’s side were in danger of being blown away by Arsenal after their inconsistent form left the Gunners in pole position. But second-placed City have been handed a lifeline by Arsenal’s damaging draws against Wolves and Brentford. They are now just five points behind Arsenal with a game in hand and a home match against Mikel Arteta’s men to come in April. If City win their remaining 12 matches they will be crowned champions for the fifth time in the last six seasons. But Guardiola is not getting carried away by the opportunity. Instead, he remains focused on today’s visit from Newcastle, when a win would close the gap on Arsenal to two points before the Gunners face Tottenham in the north London derby tomorrow. “I didn’t talk about the table, or our position or something like that. I could not care less,” Guardiola said. “I didn’t talk about that for one second. Just Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle. If you ask me this question with two or three games left, I will have your answer. It’s 12 games left, it’s an eternity.” Having won six titles during 10 years at City, Guardiola knows the final weeks of the season will bring more twists and turns. He also has experience of watching Arsenal let substantial leads slip away in the 2023 and 2024 title races, allowing City to snatch the trophy from their grasp. “Many things are going to happen until the end of the season. For now it is Newcastle, a rest and after it Leeds. It has always been like that,” he said. “Seventy per cent of the players are new, so they don’t have the experience to live these kinds of situations. An experience is to win tomorrow. It is only one. Arsenal were nine points (ahead) when we had a game in hand, so whenever everybody is on the same games played then after that we will see the difference. I understand you want to anticipate what is going to happen. That doesn’t count. It is Newcastle, that is all.” Arteta urges Arsenal to ‘write own destiny’ after title wobble Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta challenged spluttering Arsenal to start writing their “own destiny” in north London derby at Tottenham after losing control of the Premier League title race. The Gunners have finished as runners-up for the last three seasons and their latest untimely stumble has raised pointed questions about their ability to cope with the pressure of the title race. But Arteta is adamant his players can handle the tension, as long as they embrace the opportunity to make history. “What I have seen is a tremendous reaction again. When you lose points with the last kick of the game, in an unpredictable manner, nobody can really understand that. But this is football,” he said. “Life moves on, there’s nothing we can do. It is about what happens next. That was a chapter. In chapter 27, we draw against Wolves. In the next one it is about how we write our own destiny going forward.” Arsenal have squandered the lead in their last two matches, drawing 1-1 with Brentford and 2-2 at bottom-of-the-table Wolves. Failing to beat Wolves after establishing a two-goal lead was especially painful, with a mix-up between keeper David Raya and defender Gabriel Magalhaes sparking Tom Edozie’s stoppage-time equaliser. “The immediate reaction is tough. It was a shock to the system. We wanted to win and we couldn’t and we have to move on,” Arteta said. “But we have clear instructions. We have to live in the present. The present is beautiful, we are exactly where we want to be in every competition.” Arsenal have won just two of their last seven league games, but troubled Tottenham are in even worse form, with no wins in their previous eight top-flight matches.

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked head coach Thomas Frank after fewer than eight months in charge following a 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle on Tuesday, which left them a mere five points above the Premier League relegation zone.The north London side are 16th in the table and without a win in their past eight Premier League games – their worst such run since October 2008. Spurs have won just two of their past 17 league matches and collected only 12 points in that time.Frank, 52, replaced Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed in June just over two weeks after leading Spurs to victory in the Europa League final. The club hailed the former Brentford boss as "one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game" when they announced the Dane's appointment on a three-year deal.But a Tottenham statement issued said: "The club has taken the decision to make a change in the men's head coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today. Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we have been determined to give him the time and support needed to build for the future together. However, results and performances have led the board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary."The statement also thanked Frank for his "unwavering commitment" and whished him "every success" in the future. Frank led Spurs to automatic qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League by finishing fourth in the group stage. But that was offset by a Premier League record of seven wins, eight draws and 11 defeats this season, with Spurs also knocked out of both domestic cup competitions.Despite the Newcastle defeat, which saw frustrated home fans call for him to be "sacked in the morning", Frank was confident of remaining in charge after speaking to the Spurs hierarchy on Monday. "We understand we are not in a top position and we need to do everything we can to get out," said Frank after Tuesday's loss, with a 12-day gap until Tottenham are next in action, at home to Premier League leaders Arsenal in a north London derby on February 22. "I understand the frustration and the easiest thing is to point at me. That's part of the job unfortunately.He added: "I will work day and night to turn this around but it is not just one person. There is no doubt we need to improve and I need to be part of that."Frank spent seven years in charge of Brentford, guiding the club from the Championship to the Premier League in 2021 and keeping the west London side in the top division despite relatively meagre resources.Spurs finished 17th last season but qualified for the Champions League after beating Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao -- their first major trophy for 17 years.Despite their struggles in the league under Postecoglou, the Australian's attacking style at least provided entertainment for long-suffering fans, in contrast to Frank's dour defensive game plan.Frank said earlier this month he shared the frustrations of supporters but he has also been hampered by a long list of injuries to creative players including James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus.Although considered a member of the Premier League's "Big Six", Tottenham have not been crowned champions of England since winning the old First Division title in the 1960/61 season – when they also did 'The Double' by lifting the FA Cup. Frank is the seventh manager to part ways with a Premier League club this season. 

Pep Guardiola said Tuesday Manchester City must address a habit of second half slumps if they are to retain any hope of chasing down Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.City scored twice late on to snatch a 2-1 victory away to Liverpool on Sunday and move back within six points of the Gunners. However, those were the first goals Guardiola's men have scored in the second half of any Premier League game in 2026.City blew a 2-0 first half lead to draw 2-2 against Tottenham the week before and were again outplayed for large parts of the second half at Anfield after dominating the first 45 minutes. Victory over Fulham Wednesday will cut the gap at the top down to three points for 24 hours at least before Arsenal visit Brentford.But Guardiola said talk of a title race is premature until City iron out their inconsistency. "We have to be better and to be closer to make the first half in Anfield and not the second," Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference."What is the reason why in the second half still we are dropping our performance? Not (whether the gap is) three, four, five, six points because if we don't do that, we will not win. Maybe not against Fulham, maybe it'll be against Newcastle or maybe in the next game at Leeds."City's quest to win silverware in four different competitions was boosted by the return of Ruben Dias as a second half substitute against Liverpool. But in the absence of centre-backs Dias and Josko Gvardiola through injury, Abdukodir Khusanov has taken his chance for more first-team opportunities.Guardiola hailed the improvement of the young Uzbek defender, who arrived in Manchester just over a year ago with little English and took time to adapt. "I admit he doesn't speak like William Shakespeare, but he's getting better and better," added Guardiola."He's so, so fast. To recover that position is one of his attributes. But not just that he's intelligent. Normally when a player has this physicality he doesn't use what's going on (in his head) and it's always his physical condition, and he has both. That's why on the ball he's getting better. That's why he's encouraged to improve and he can improve. At that age and he's open minded and I said recently, 'City have a player in central defence for many, many years'."Guardiola said it does not help to pay attention to title race speculation before every game, and he focuses entirely on beating his ‌next opponents. "Every time over the past ⁠weeks and months when I go before the game for an interview, (it's) ‍always if you lose you are losing everything and are going to disappear from the planet earth and stuff," Guardiola said. "So what I am saying is what do you have to do to beat Fulham?"City, seeking their seventh English top-flight title in Guardiola's decade-long tenure, ‌have won only two of their last seven league games, allowing Arsenal to pull further ahead with four wins in the same period. "The distance is not ‍huge but considering how Arsenal ⁠is doing, six ‌points is a lot. Next game against a team like (Fulham) who every year is better and better, so we'll see," Guardiola said.City had to dig deep to snatch a 5-4 win at Fulham in December, and Guardiola praised the way the London side have improved under Marco Silva since earning their promotion to the Premier League in 2022."The movements they do... they're really good. The patterns and the quality they have, the composure of the play, the speed they have. Marco is one of ​the top, top, top managers ‌I face. Destined to be one of the top in a few years for sure," Guardiola ⁠said. 

A string of setbacks in the Premier League has ‌left Liverpool manager Arne Slot disheartened that his players ‌have not lived up ‍to the club's high standards in what he described as his most challenging season ⁠ever. The champions have won ⁠only one of their last seven Premier League games, missing out ‍on victory due to late goals by Fulham and Manchester City. Sixth-placed Liverpool are 17 points below leaders Arsenal."A draw feels like a loss at this club. That's definitely not easy for players as well because they know what the standards of Liverpool mean, and we are not performing to the standards of ‌Liverpool at the moment and they feel that disappointment," Slot told reporters."Every game it feels as though we are going to win ‍it but it doesn't happen... (the ⁠players) feel performance ‌wise that they can compete with any other team in any league in the world. But reality is that we don't perform to Liverpool standards."Asked if this was the toughest season he has faced, Slot agreed. "That's fair to say by a mile. All of the other seasons I have managed there were only positives, I don't think I have ever lost two games in a row," said Slot, who led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season. "It's an exception for ​me this season and ‌it is for the players, they are not used to losing a lot or having a ⁠lot of draws. I ‍am not used to that either."Slot said he wondered how much of Liverpool's struggles were down to bad luck. "The amount of times we have conceded late goals in extra time is far more than usual, is it bad luck or are we to blame? I have ​tried many different things, I have made defensive substitutions and the ball went in," the Dutchman said.Slot said today's visit to Sunderland, the only Premier League team still unbeaten at home this season, would be another big test. "They have already played against City and Arsenal at home so that tells you how good a season they are having and how strong they are at home," Slot ⁠said. "There's still a possibility we can do something special this season as well."
