India's 2.2 million aspiring medical students sit a re-examination under tight security on Sunday, after the last test was scrapped following a paper leak that triggered widespread outrage.The failure of the hugely competitive exam, along with a separate marking fiasco in high school tests, sparked an outcry and fuelled youth protests demanding the education minister's resignation.The authorities say they have deployed more than 200,000 officials, including police, and restricted the Telegram messaging app.The National Testing Agency (NTA) said it had put in a place a "multi-layered security framework to ensure a fair and transparent examination".That includes biometric authentication, AI-enabled camera surveillance and GPS tracking of question papers, it said.The examination is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm local time (0830 GMT).The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the gateway to India's medical colleges, is taken annually by millions of candidates competing for just over 100,000 undergraduate seats.The intense competition has fuelled a vast coaching industry and created opportunities for organised criminal networks seeking to profit from paper leaks and exam fraud.The leak prompted a backlash from students and parents after last month's exam was scrapped, with Indian media reporting suicides of some teenagers.India's Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested the alleged kingpin behind the leak, identifying him as a chemistry lecturer.The NTA said that messaging apps were used "by cheating rackets to defraud candidates" by sharing leaked questions.Telegram head Pavel Durov said the week-long ban would not work, arguing that the "leaks just moved to other apps" and that the issue was the "insiders who leaked the exam materials".The controversy came on top of another dispute over the online marking system used for tests taken by nearly two million high school students, with many alleging incorrect grades or results were assigned to the wrong candidates.Public anger has also fuelled the rise of the satirical "Cockroach People's Party", which has attracted millions of followers since its launch in May and demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

After nine months of rehabilitation and self-reflection, India's javelin icon Neeraj Chopra is finally ready to throw again.The Indian superstar returns to competition at the Doha Diamond League at Qatar Sports Club today, making his 2026 season debut after a lengthy injury layoff that forced him to rethink not only his body but also his approach to the sport.For Chopra, Doha is more than just another stop on the Diamond League circuit. It is the venue where he finally conquered the elusive 90-metre barrier last year with a throw of 90.23m, a milestone that had long defined his career. Yet even that unforgettable night carried mixed emotions as Germany's Julian Weber produced an even bigger throw moments later to snatch victory.Now, the 28-year-old returns to the same stage hoping to launch a fresh chapter after admitting that competing at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo while injured was a mistake."I had some injury last year before the Tokyo World Championships and we worked a lot, but I competed in Tokyo. I don't think it was a good decision because I already knew that I had some problems," Chopra said ahead of Friday's meeting.The consequences were severe. What began as a back injury turned into months of recovery, with fresh issues emerging in his ankle and shoulder. "In our life as athletes, there is one injury, we try to fix that injury, and then we hit another one. Then I had an issue in my ankle, then somewhere in the shoulder. Together with my team and physio, we worked on every part," Chopra sad.The extended absence meant Chopra delayed his return until he was completely satisfied with his fitness, confirming his participation in Doha only after his final training session."We started throwing one-and-a-half months ago and took our time. I talked to organisers in Doha and asked if I could confirm very late. After my last session, we decided to come here. It is always my preference to open my season in Doha," he said.His affection for the Qatari capital is understandable. Beyond the memories of his first 90-metre throw, Doha has consistently produced some of the biggest javelin marks in history. Curiously, Chopra believes his landmark throw still had room for improvement."Technically it was not that good. It was really fast from the arm, but if I could do better with the lower body then maybe two or three metres more," he said.Instead, the two-time Olympic medalist says he prefers watching his qualification-round throws from major championships because they reflect his natural rhythm. "When I compete in finals, I always try really hard and become very aggressive. Then I forget my technique. I really like my qualification throws because they are technically better," the affable Chopra said.That emphasis on returning to his natural technique has also shaped a major coaching change. After parting ways with Czech legend Jan Zelezny in January, having previously worked with biomechanics expert Dr Klaus Bartonietz, Chopra has reunited with his long-time mentor Jaiveer Chaudhary, who guided him during his formative years."He knows my story from the last 15 or 16 years. He was my senior, when I started my career. Now we are working on my technique as it originally was when I started. We are not working on anything very specific or very deep. I have a good team and I feel very good," he revealed.While Chopra is making his season debut, he faces one of the strongest fields assembled this year. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage arrives as the world's in-form thrower after producing a world-leading 92.62m in Rome, while world champion Keshorn Walcott, former world champion Anderson Peters, Curtis Thompson, Jakub Vadlejch and Julius Yego add further quality to an event that has become one of Doha's signature attractions.Chopra welcomed the emergence of Pathirage. "I'm happy for Rumesh. He is a good thrower and it is good to see someone from Sri Lanka throwing that well," he said.With no World Championships or Olympics this season, Chopra said his focus is firmly on building momentum towards the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games later this year. “I feel really good and fit. Let’s see how I do tomorrow,” he said.

Air India is introducing a fare class that doesn’t include complimentary meals, as the full-service carrier looks to cuts costs and compete with budget rivals in an increasingly challenging environment.The so-called basic fare is available for travel in economy class on some domestic routes, the airline said late on Tuesday. It includes a 15 kg checked baggage allowance and 7 kg cabin baggage, as well as free beverages such as tea and coffee. These fares can only be booked on Air India’s website, mobile app, call centre and airport ticketing offices.The country’s second-largest airline is looking for ways to increase revenue and return to profitability after incurring a record loss equivalent to roughly $3bn in its last fiscal year that ended in March. Its majority owner, the Tata Group, has told Air India to stabilise its operations and reduce the red ink, forcing the carrier to pivot away from an ambitious growth plan. Air India is now looking to downsize and slow down deliveries of hundreds of planes it ordered from Airbus SE and Boeing Co, people familiar with the matter said last week.Unbundling some services from fares on its full-service airline could help attract more customers, and would enable Air India to save on fees paid to travel agencies and other online portals. But the airline also risks cannibalising business from its own low-cost carrier, Air India Express.Air India’s basic fare mirrors offerings from rivals IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, and fast-growing local airline Akasa Air. Air India had a 24.7% share of the country’s domestic market in April, versus IndiGo’s 65% share, according to data from India’s civil aviation authority.Air India offers other economy fares that include value, classic and flex options that all come with free meals. Travelers opting for basic fares can pre-purchase meals up to 24 hours before departure. It added it will assess customer feedback and responses during the pilot phase “to guide decisions on the future of the offering.”India’s airlines have been struggling of late with mounting costs due to the Middle East conflict, prompting the government to provide Rs100bn ($1bn) to support oil retailers in capping jet fuel prices.

India's ‌KL Rahul and Shubman Gill scored centuries against Afghanistan on Saturday as ​the home side batted into ‌a dominant position and ended the opening day of the one-off ‌Test on 368-3.India, playing ⁠their first Test ‌versus Afghanistan since hosting the visitors ‌in their first-ever test in 2018, won the toss and opted to bat at the ⁠New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh.The match came after a quick turnaround for many of India's players from their Indian Premier League campaigns, with several members of the national team having played in last week's final, and some signs of rust were evident in the early stages.The openers struggled for fluency in the opening session and Rahul was handed a major reprieve in the 11th over when ​a clear edge went unreviewed by the visitors, despite vociferous appeals from fielder Rahmanullah Gurbaz.Replays later confirmed Rahul would have been dismissed, and the 34-year-old made the most of his lifeline, ‌combining for a 139-run partnership with ⁠Sai Sudharsan after ​opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed by Mohammad Saleem for 24.That partnership ended ​when Saleem took his second wicket, getting Sudharsan out for 81 with a delivery that carried through to wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai, who took a superb diving catch. 67-RUN THIRD-WICKET PARTNERSHIPRahul then featured in a 67-run third-wicket partnership with captain Gill, who contributed 39 runs and helped see his teammate to a 12th Test century - brought up in 165 balls.However, Rahul was dismissed off the very next ball by Ziaur Rahman after being caught at extra cover, finishing on exactly 100 runs for his third Test century in a row."I'm really happy that I could get some ‌time in the middle. To ‌make that switch from T20 to ⁠test cricket in a matter of a couple of days was the most pleasing ⁠thing," Rahul said."It was extremely hot, ⁠I was exhausted ... I had to make that switch of letting the ball go and getting used to the conditions. Training did help a lot. I did feel the urge to play a shots and I don't think it is a bad thing."It's something I have been telling myself as well. Sometimes you sit and over analyse. I try ​to not restrict my shots. I played a few more shots in the morning than I would usually do but it didn't frustrate me."Gill (103) soldiered on alongside Rishabh Pant (50) and the pair kept their foot on the gas to take India past the 350-run mark, before the India captain reached the 11th Test century of his career right before the end of play.For India, the match is a chance to build some confidence ahead of series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand this year, after ‌a difficult couple of ​years in test cricket which have included losses to the Kiwis, South Africa and Australia. BRIEF SCORESIndia 368 for 3 (Gill 103*, Rahul 100, Sudharsan 81, Pant 50*, Saleem 2-67) vs Afghanistan
