Madonna, Shakira and K-pop megastars BTS will headline a Super Bowl-style half-time show at the World Cup final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, FIFA said. Coldplay's Chris Martin is curating the show, which is a first for a football World Cup final but has raised concerns about how long half-time will be. The biggest-ever World Cup, with 48 teams, kicks off on June 11 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced in March last year that there would be "the first-ever half-time show at a FIFA World Cup final". He did not say at the time who would be performing or how long the show would last. "This will be a historic moment for the FIFA World Cup and a show befitting the biggest sporting event in the world," he said on Instagram. The move mirrors the show held during the final of the 2024 Copa America in Miami, when Colombian star Shakira performed at half-time at the Hard Rock Stadium. There was also a half-time show at last year's FIFA Club World Cup final, also at MetLife Stadium, which stretched the break in excess of the regulation 15 minutes. Infantino added that FIFA also planned to "take over" New York's Times Square on the final weekend of the World Cup. The half-time extravaganza will support FIFA's Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative working to raise $100 million for children worldwide during the World Cup. Shakira last week teased the new official song for the World Cup, releasing a brief video of the track filmed at Brazil's iconic Maracana Stadium. The singer -- who also created the 2010 World Cup anthem "Waka Waka" -- announced the song, titled "Dai Dai" in a post on her Instagram account. In the 67-second video, Shakira appears on the pitch at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, where she performed in a free concert at the city's Copacabana Beach before two million people. Holding the "Trionda", the official match ball of the 2026 World Cup, Shakira performed excerpts of the song in English, joined by dancers dressed in the colors of teams including the United States and Colombia. The song was produced with Nigerian artist Burna Boy and is set for official release on Thursday. The clip, also shared by the FIFA World Cup account, ends with the message: "We're ready!" Shakira has a long association with the World Cup, performing at the 2006 and 2014 World Cup finals in addition to producing "Waka Waka" for the 2010 tournament.

In its commitment to fostering ongoing communication with clubs, discussing the latest developments, decisions and new phase of competitions, and preparing for the upcoming 2026-2027 football season, the Qatar Stars League (QSL), in co-operation with Qatar Football Association (QFA), held a workshop for clubs. Representatives from QSL, QFA, Doha Bank Stars League clubs and Second Division clubs attended.The workshop addressed the new phase of QSL and QSL 2 competitions, providing an overview of the strategy aimed at continuing development and enhancing competitiveness among clubs, ultimately serving the best interests of Qatar football, its championships and national teams.The workshop also reviewed and clarified the new decisions, which include: cancellation of Olympic League and Second Division League, and the launch of a new competition called QSL 2. This new competition will be played on a home-and-away format and will include Second Division clubs, Under-23 national team and 'B' teams of some First Division clubs that meet the participation requirements and criteria. The meeting also clarified the participation mechanism and the number of foreign professional players permitted, based on the new regulations. These regulations permit each First Division club to field a maximum of five foreign professional players, in addition to at least two talented players, within the 11-man squad at any point during a match.**media[444918]**Regarding QSL 2, eight foreign professional players are allowed within the 11-man squad at any point during a match.The meeting addressed several inquiries and questions from club representatives, providing necessary clarifications regarding the new regulations and their implementation mechanisms. This aims to support club readiness and achieve the highest levels of technical and administrative organization for competitions.It may be noted that this meeting was part of an ongoing communication strategy with clubs and further meetings will be held to provide additional information and clarifications.

His Excellency the Minister of Sports and Youth Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani inaugurated the official digital platform for the project documenting the history of Qatari football (1948-present), marking the launch of a landmark national initiative aimed at preserving the legacy of football in Qatar through a modern institutional framework that combines scientific methodology with digital innovation. The project reflects a firm belief that football in Qatar has long served as a social and cultural pillar that contributed to shaping public consciousness and mirrored the transformations of Qatari society across different historical periods. In this context, the initiative seeks to transform decades of sporting heritage, milestones, and iconic moments into a credible national archive that preserves the past while ensuring its continuity for future generations.**media[444261]**Speaking during the launch ceremony, the chairman of the Committee for the Documentation and Archiving of Qatari Football History, Ali Dawood, said that the achievement was the result of sustained institutional work that began in August 2020, driven by the conviction that documenting the history of Qatari football is a national responsibility equal in importance to the achievements themselves, as it preserves and sustains them. He said that the committee focused on collecting, verifying, and archiving a vast body of historical material, including documents, photographs, oral testimonies, and rare footage, all reviewed according to rigorous scientific standards.**media[444262]**Dawood added that documentation, research, and technical teams succeeded in building a comprehensive knowledge base that has been organised, indexed, and digitised to serve as a reliable national reference for researchers, media professionals, and future generations. He stressed that the accomplishment was the product of integrated teamwork carried out in accordance with the highest standards of quality and governance. He noted that the committee’s attainment of ISO 9001:2015 certification within a record period for a documentation project reflects its commitment to institutional excellence and sustainable professional practices. The committee adopted a comprehensive organisational structure comprising specialised teams in historical documentation, oral history, archiving, digitisation, verification, and review to ensure accuracy, governance, and quality outputs. Its work began with the collection of rare documents, photographs, and video materials, alongside recording testimonies of pioneers and key figures in Qatari football, followed by cross-referenced historical verification, digitisation of content, and the development of an interactive database based on the latest international standards. The committee stated that the project has reached an advanced stage, noting that the digital platform currently contains nearly 15 terabytes of historical data and content and continues to undergo expansion and updates. The volume of content is expected to nearly double during upcoming phases as part of a phased strategy designed to ensure the project’s comprehensiveness, sustainability, and status as a living national reference for the history of Qatari football. The committee also announced the publication of several specialised documentary books as part of the archiving project, covering pivotal milestones in Qatar’s football journey. These include publications on the early beginnings of football in Qatar, the national team’s participation in the Gulf Cup, and Qatar’s journey in FIFA World Cup tournaments, within a vision aimed at delivering verified knowledge content that combines historical narrative with scientific methodology. Among the publications is The Story of the Beginning, which documents the formative years of football in Qatar, tracing its emergence within early labour communities before spreading across Doha neighbourhoods and evolving into clubs, teams, and stadiums. Another publication, Qatar in the Gulf Cup: Legacy and Impact, chronicles Qatar’s participation in the Arabian Gulf Cup since the tournament’s inception, highlighting the technical, organisational, and fan-related transformations that accompanied its football journey within the broader Gulf sporting landscape. The book Qatar in the World Cup: Journey and Milestones documents the evolution of Qatari football from its early qualification attempts to the historic hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the national team’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The publication offers both historical and analytical perspectives on a long journey marked by ambition, challenges, and achievement.

The Qatar Football Association Disciplinary Committee has reshaped the Qatar Stars League title race, ruling in favour of Al Shamal after confirming a player eligibility violation by Qatar SC in their April 13 clash. In its official decision, issued after reviewing Al Shamal’s protest, the committee stated: “The protest submitted by Al Shamal Club is accepted in form and substance.” It added: “Qatar Club lost the match with a score of 3-0, and a financial penalty of (10,000) Qatari riyals only.” The ruling overturns the original 2-0 result and instead awards Al Shamal a 3-0 victory, significantly altering the standings at the top of the QSL. The case centred on a second-half substitution made by Qatar SC after they were reduced to ten men just before half-time following the dismissal of Ali Saoudi for a dangerous challenge on Baghdad Bounedjah. Despite the red card involving a foreign player, Qatar SC later introduced Argentine defender Franco Russo in place of Ahmed a;=Rawi, a local player - a move deemed a direct violation of squad regulations. The committee cited Article 15 of the player status rules, which states that if one of six foreign players is sent off, the team must continue with five foreign professionals and cannot replace a local player with another foreigner. It also referenced Article 61/1/b, noting: “The club shall be penalised as having lost if it commits in any match a violation of the participation system - B: Participation of foreign players.” Al Shamal lodged their protest within 24 hours of the match, arguing that the substitution involving a foreign player after the red card breached the competition rules. Before the decision, the defeat had left Al Shamal trailing leaders Al Sadd by five points, a gap that placed the title out of reach with one round remaining. The revised outcome restores three points to Al Shamal, bringing them back into direct contention and dramatically tightening the race. Defending champions Al Sadd, on 42 points, now lead Al Shamal by just two points. Attention now turns to the final round on April 27, where Al Shamal face Al Sadd in a decisive clash that will determine the QSL champion on the pitch. 

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said Kylian Mbappe joined the club to star in key matches like today’s Champions League clash against German giants Bayern Munich. Arbeloa said Mbappe was a vital part of the team, although questions remain over whether record 15-time winners Madrid can strike the right balance with all their biggest names on the pitch at the same time. French superstar Mbappe, the club’s top goalscorer, did not start either game in the last 16 tie against Manchester City which Madrid won impressively, because of a long struggle with a knee sprain. Fit once more, Arbeloa indicated Mbappe was likely to feature along with Vinicius Junior in attack at the Santiago Bernabeu against Bayern in the quarter-final first leg. “I’m delighted to have that kind of problem, to have outstanding players at my disposal and to have a player like Kylian Mbappe, who came to Real Madrid for matches like tomorrow’s and for knockout ties like this one,” Arbeloa told reporters. “I’m sure we’re going to see Kylian at his best, leading the team the way he’s always known how to do, and I have a great deal of confidence in all the players.” England international Jude Bellingham is also finding his way back to fitness after injury and Arbeloa said he would keep betting on the squad’s stars when they are available. Against City young midfielder Thiago Pitarch and attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz played important roles, but they may get less time on the pitch in the Bayern tie. “It’s clear Mbappe has different characteristics and conditions to those Brahim has, so we have to play in a different way, but I’m delighted to have this problem,” said Arbeloa. “Just as you mention Bellingham and other great players I have available, for me it’s a blessing to be able to count on everyone...” he continued. “Having a player like Mbappe in the team is an extraordinary stroke of luck. I don’t know if there’s a coach in the world who wouldn’t want to have him. I put myself in the shoes of the defenders who play against Real Madrid and have to face Mbappe, Vinicius, Valverde, Bellingham... I think they’re some of the best players on the planet.” Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior said he worked well together with Mbappe, despite some believing the fit is not right for Madrid. “People talk a lot... ‘Kyli’ is here to help us, he’s always given us confidence, he scores the goals for us, we have to be connected tomorrow, above all with the fans and all the players,” he told reporters. “It’s a difficult game where the best players make the difference, and Kyli is one of those. I have an incredible connection with him, not just on the pitch but off it too.” Vinicius pledged Madrid will be at their best against Bayern Munich after a poor showing in La Liga on Saturday, when they lost 2-1 against Mallorca, leaving them seven points adrift of leaders Barcelona. “There are days where we are more connected or less connected, and that happened against Mallorca,” explained the forward. “We had come from the international break and today, as the coach said, if we’re not at 200 percent, we’re not going to win games. I hope we are tomorrow, because it’s an important day for us.”The winger, who has become a leading figure in the fight against racism, also spoke about the Islamophobic chanting at Spain’s friendly against Egypt last week, which Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal criticised. “It’s important that Lamine speaks and that can help people,” said Vinicius, who claimed he was racially abused by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni in a Champions League match in February, which the Argentine denies. “I’m not saying Spain, Germany or Portugal are racist countries, but there are racists in these countries, especially in Brazil too, in a lot of countries there are racists. But if we continue this fight together, I think that in the future new players don’t have to suffer these things and above all, people in general too.”

Al Rayyan and Al Wajba booked their places in the final of the third edition of the Al Thumama Ramadan Football Tournament at the Al Furjan Stadium in Al Thumama. In the semi-finals, Al Rayyan defeated Al Shaab 4-0 while Al Wajba secured a 3-0 win over Al Raya Medical. Al Shaab and Al Raya Medical will now meet in the third-place play-off. Al Rayyan’s run to the final gathered momentum late in the group stage. They had been sitting fourth before a crucial 3-0 win over Al Zaeem pushed them into the semi-finals, where they carried that form forward with a dominant display. The tournament, held for players aged 10 to 14, featured 13 teams split into two groups. Group A included Doha, Turki Bin Abdullah, Al Wajba, Al Zaeem, Al Rayyan and Al Thumama. Group B featured Al Dafna, Al Shaab, Al Waab, Al Raya Medical, Palestine, Al Shaqab and Al Shahaniya. Winners will receive QR7,000 along with the trophy and medals, while the runners-up will earn QR5,000. The third-place team will take home QR3,000. Individual awards will also be presented. The best player, top scorer and best goalkeeper will each receive QR500, while the best team award carries a prize of QR3,000. 

The Senegalese Football Federation announced Thursday it has instructed its lawyers to lodge an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the national team were stripped of its Africa Cup of Nations title.The Confederation of African Football (CAF) reversed Senegal's win Tuesday, awarding the title to Morocco two months after the final. "Senegal will remain standing and will legitimately defend this victory on the field which we acquired on the field with the talent of our players", the federation's president Abdoulaye Fall told a press conference. "We have given our lawyers a mandate to pursue this procedure at the level of the Court of Arbitration for Sport", he added.The contintent's showpiece football final, in Rabat on January 18, descended into chaos when several Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest after the hosts were awarded a penalty late in second-half stoppage time. Senegal's players were coaxed back onto the pitch by captain Sadio Mane, but Morocco missed the penalty. Pape Gueye went on to score the goal in extra time that gave Senegal a 1-0 victory.CAF said that having studied an appeal by Morocco, "the Senegal national team is declared to have forfeited the match" and the result was "officially recorded as 3-0" in favour of Morocco. Asked what would happen to the trophy in the meantime, Fall told reporters the team would "comply with the statutory and regulatory provisions of CAF".The revocation of the win elicited a strong response from fans in Senegal, where authorities called for an "independent international investigation" into corruption. In a resolution issued by the federation's executive committee and read at the press conference, the federation said it would "use all possible legal, institutional and jurisdictional means to assert its rights and restore sporting fairness".Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appeared in his office in front of the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in a social media post Wednesday, expressing his "outrage" at CAF's decision. The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), meanwhile has said the decision "upholds the rules and ensures the stability necessary for the smooth running of international competitions."New Morocco coach praises 'well-deserved' Cup of Nations decisionMeanwhile, Morocco's new head coach Mohamed Ouahbi congratulated his country on CAF's "well-deserved" decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title in favour of his new side."First of all, I would like to congratulate all Moroccans, the staff, the players and the federation on the good news we got two days ago, which is well-deserved," said Ouahbi during the presentation of his first squad list for Morocco's next two friendly matches against Ecuador and Paraguay.This decision "pleases everyone", added the 49-year-old who replaced Walid Regragui earlier this month, partly because of the former manager's failure to win the Africa Cup of Nations. "But it's important to focus on the present and the future. My goal is to make the team competitive for the World Cup."Morocco, under Regragui, reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and will line up in Group C at this year's edition alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.
