The Qatari Businessmen Association (QBA) held a meeting with a delegation from Syria as a follow-up to QBA’s meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who was in Qatar for the recently concluded Doha Forum 2025.The delegation was headed by Dr Hazem al-Sharaa, vice-president of the Syrian Supreme Council for Economic Development. He was accompanied by Talal al-Hilali, director general of Syria’s Investment Authority, and Safwat Raslan, director general of the Syrian Development Fund.Sunday’s meeting comes as a continuation of QBA’s meeting last week with President al-Sharaa, aimed at discussing potential investment opportunities in Syria, even as a number of QBA members have already launched concrete economic projects there in the fields of energy, electricity, and real estate.The Syrian delegation was received by QBA chairman His Excellency Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani, in the presence of board member Sheikh Nawaf bin Nasser al-Thani, and QBA members Sheikh Mansour bin Jassim al-Thani, Khaled al-Mannai, Mohammed Moataz al-Khayyat, Ramez al-Khayyat, Nabil Abu Issa, Faisal al-Mana, Yousuf al-Mahmoud, and Ihsan al-Khaimi, as well as representatives of Abdulrahman Al Mana Companies, Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad al-Thani, Mekdam Holding Group, and other member companies, in addition to QBA general manager Sarah Abdallah.At the beginning of the meeting, Dr Hazem al-Sharaa stated that Qatar was among the first countries to invest in Syria, following the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and the Qatari Government, to place Syria on the international investment map by strengthening international relations and attracting major companies to participate in the reconstruction of Syria.Al-Sharaa noted that the Supreme Council for Economic Development aims to achieve economic stability in the country, revitalise and develop the economy, and establish a comprehensive economic map covering the entire Syrian geography.He said this will be achieved through full supervision of several economic authorities, organisations, and institutions operating within the framework of the state’s economic plan. He also confirmed that Syria will launch a completely new currency in the market at the beginning of the new year, in line with the requirements of the current phase.The council, chaired by the President of the Republic, is responsible for approving general strategies and plans related to investment. Its membership includes the ministers of economy and industry, energy, finance, tourism, communications and information technology, public works and housing, and agriculture, in addition to the head of the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, among others. Several economic entities are affiliated with the council, most notably the Syrian Investment Authority, the Sovereign Fund, and the Development Fund.During the meeting, al-Sharaa focused on current economic projects in Syria that contribute to reconstruction and the development of infrastructure and vital sectors, with particular emphasis on energy, transport, tourism, real estate, health, education, and key industrial sectors such as pharmaceuticals and construction materials.He also praised the significant investments by Qatari and Saudi companies in the development of power generation stations, as well as the signing of memoranda of understanding to modernise the electricity sector in general. This is in addition to the development of Damascus International Airport and the Damascus Metro project, in cooperation with Qatari and Turkish companies.For his part, al-Hilali spoke about the development of the legislative framework to attract and guarantee direct investments through the adoption of the best international laws, allowing foreign investors to own 100% of their projects.He explained that, in this new phase, the state has adopted measures to fully exempt investors from taxes in the health sector and agricultural projects related to food security, in addition to full tax exemptions for factories that export more than 50% of their production.Meanwhile, Sheikh Faisal stated that Syria represents an investment bank of projects and golden opportunities for investors. He stressed the need to develop joint Qatari–Syrian projects through the establishment of institutions specialised across various sectors, such as industrial, health, tourism, and real estate, among others, given that the state’s objective is to create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth. He emphasised that the private sector in both countries can play a prominent role in this direction.Qatari businessmen affirmed that Syria is currently witnessing a major economic transformation across various sectors, noting that most of them have already begun working on productive projects in Syria. They also announced that a delegation of Qatari businessmen will visit Syria at the invitation of the Supreme Council for Development, following an official invitation from President al-Sharaa to Damascus to explore investment opportunities.

The College of Pharmacy at Qatar University (QU) participated in the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research Conference (ISPOR 2025), in Tokyo, Japan, from September 28 to 30. The college was represented by students Abdelaziz al-Khalaf and Maram Abdelsadig.This academic accomplishment reflects the college’s commitment to supporting scientific research and enhancing international academic engagement for its students, a statement said. The students’ research abstract, titled 'Interventions Promoting the Acceptance and Uptake of Generic Medicines: A Systematic Review,' was accepted for presentation as a scientific poster under the supervision of Dr Zaheer Babar, providing them with the opportunity to present their work among leading international experts in health economics and outcomes research.During the conference, the students took part in a wide range of academic activities, including attending scientific workshops, visiting the accompanying exhibition, and presenting their research poster.Maram, a fourth-year pharmacy student, highlighted the importance of the experience, noting that her participation as an undergraduate student and a representative of Qatar provided a distinguished opportunity to interact with specialists from pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, and various health-related fields.Al-Khalaf was of the view that the conference enabled him to understand how real-world data is used beyond academic study and its significant role in guiding healthcare decisions. "Meeting professionals from different countries and hearing about their experiences greatly motivated me to further develop my skills in this field.”This participation reflects the importance of engaging students in global research forums and strengthening the role of experiential learning in academic and professional growth, the statement added. 

Qatar University (QU) concluded its participation in the World Summit AI Qatar 2025 by announcing the winners of the HealthTech Hackathon 2025, marking the culmination of two days of interactive sessions, scientific demonstrations, and specialised discussions on the future of predictive and clinical artificial intelligence (AI) applications.Throughout the second day of the summit on Wednesday, QU hosted a series of applied sessions covering predictive AI models, AI in electrocardiography, and digital twin applications in healthcare management.The university’s pavilion also featured prominent side events, including the session on “Predictive AI Models for Optimal Patient Treatment”, presented by Dr Uvais Qidwai and Dr Umair Qidwai, and “The AI Heartbeat: Smart ECG & Patient Monitoring”, delivered by Prof Mustafa Serkan Kiranyaz.In addition, the QU organised the “AI in Clinical Applications: Opportunities and Challenges” panel, which brought together Prof Mustafa Serkan Kiranyaz from the QU, Dr Julien Abinahed from Itqan, and Prof Guillaume Alinier from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)’s Ambulance Service, and was moderated by Prof Alaa Alkilany.Discussions focused on integrating AI to enhance clinical decision-making, monitoring, and patient care pathways.**media[392575]**The QU pavilion also hosted the main-stage panel on “From Innovation to Impact: How AI Is Advancing Diagnostics & Wellbeing”, which explored how advanced AI research facilitates early detection, predictive care, and human-centred health systems.Speakers included the HMC’s executive director of Strategy and Performance Dr Ali Nazar Latif, Sidra Medicine’s Department of Surgery division chief and vice-chair Dr Mitchell Stotland, and senior Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) scientist Dr Mohamed Saad.The session was moderated by QU Research and Graduate Studies director Prof Feras Qassem Alali.The summit concluded with the final round of the HealthTech Hackathon 2025, chaired by Dr Kholoud Abdulla, lecturer in pharmaceutical sciences and chair of the HealthTech Hackathon.The competition brought together more than 400 innovators and 55 pioneering projects competing across three main tracks: AI in healthcare, advanced diagnostics, and smart hospitals.Following multiple elimination rounds, six finalist teams advanced across the two tracks of the HealthTech Hackathon 2025.The Launchpad Track finalists were HandOsteoNet, HERO, NOABIO Learning, OryxMed, and ShifAI, while the Spark Track finalists were ATF, HydroScan, NeuroWave, PillPal, and Shifa.After the final judging round, HandOsteoNet won first place, HERO secured second place, and OryxMed achieved third place in the Launchpad Track.In the Spark Track, PillPal won first place, followed by Shifa in second place and ATF in third place.

Katara Cultural Village’s Hall 12 has been transformed into a vibrant global space brimming with artistic expression, as the 7th Qatar International Arts Festival (QIAF 2025) continues. The festival brings together a distinguished group of international artists in a creative celebration that reinforces Katara’s role as a cultural bridge connecting the world through art and diversity.Running until Dec 12, the festival features the participation of more than 500 artists from 83 countries, representing various artistic schools and creative styles. The event offers a rich visual panorama that reflects the power of individual experiences and the convergence of cultures. Iraqi visual artist Jaafar Diaa of the Ashnon Arts Foundation said he is presenting two surrealist works titled 'The Fate of the Book in the Modern Age and Transcending Time', noting that the festival “is wonderful and features strong works from diverse artistic schools, making it a truly unique experience.”Indian artist Sugandha expressed her delight at participating for the first time, saying: “I am thoroughly enjoying this experience. The festival is large and gives us the opportunity to connect with artists from different countries. I was happy to meet artists from all over the world.”Ana de Negri from Spain explained that this is her second participation “after the success of last year’s edition,” noting that the Spanish delegation includes a large group of artists and two dedicated pavilions. She also expressed her pride in representing Spain again.Iraqi artist Tina Arfali stated that this is her first participation in Qatar, adding: “The opening was wonderful. My work combines Arabic calligraphy with photography using mixed media techniques to add depth and unique artistic texture.”Meanwhile, Iranian artist and university professor Mansoureh Valikhan said she is delighted to return for a second year, emphasising that her work received significant appreciation.She explained that the theme of her participation centres on Iranian folklore, using colours and patterns inspired by Iranian heritage. QIAF 2025 continues to host a daily programme of artistic performances, workshops, and public activities, reaffirming its position as one of the most prominent creative platforms in the region and a global event celebrating art in all its forms and expressions.
