AI, smart tech to drive next phase of mass transit in Qatar

Qatar’s public transport network is preparing to integrate artificial intelligence and smart mobility systems to drive its next phase of operations, following a milestone of 300mn passengers, the top official of Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has said.Qatar Rail CEO Jassim Mohamed al-Ansari outlined these technological priorities during the recently held Autonomous e-Mobility Forum, stating that the company is actively evaluating new projects to improve the passenger experience and support the country's environmental goals.“Qatar Rail is also currently studying a number of projects that contribute to enhancing the mobility experience, such as providing information about available services to customers through AI-powered chat and guiding passengers with disabilities inside stations using smart guidance systems,” al-Ansari said.Al-Ansari noted that upcoming digital initiatives involve AI-powered chat services designed to provide passengers with instant information about available services. The company is also evaluating smart guidance systems to help passengers with disabilities navigate inside metro stations easily.The integration of these new technologies follows high public usage of the transit system, emphasised al-Ansari, who announced that the Doha Metro has transported more than 300mn passengers since its inception. He said this figure proves the strong public demand for mass transit and reflects the trust the network has built with the community.Since the launch of the metro, he said Qatar Rail has focused on providing a complete travel experience that goes beyond the train journey itself. Working with the Ministry of Transport (MoT), the company developed first- and last-mile services to connect stations with surrounding neighbourhoods, al-Ansari pointed out.Al-Ansari highlighted the metrolink feeder bus service as a key component of this strategy. He said the service gives passengers flexible options to reach their final destinations.Environmental sustainability remains a core focus for the transport system, stated al-Ansari, who noted that Qatar Rail continues to adopt eco-friendly solutions to align with national environmental targets, including the addition of electric buses to the metrolink fleet to reduce carbon emissions and build a cleaner public transit model.Al-Ansari stressed that future urban mobility relies on blending different transport modes with smart technology, citing autonomous vehicles as a key element of this transition.“We also believe that the future of transport depends on integration between various modes and smart solutions, including modern technologies and autonomous vehicles, which aligns with the themes of this forum,” he said.He explained, “Integration between public transport modes and smart solutions can contribute to improving the efficiency of the system, enhancing accessibility, and providing more comprehensive and reliable mobility options, in addition to contributing to improving traffic flow in cities.” Al-Ansari attributed the network's current success to ongoing cooperation with the MoT and other partners, noting that the ministry plays a central role in coordinating the country's sustainable transport policies.He affirmed Qatar Rail’s commitment to supporting new transport initiatives. Al-Ansari said industry events allow the company to exchange expertise with local and international partners, supporting joint efforts to develop the public transport sector. These discussions will lead to further partnerships that meet community needs and improve the quality of life in Qatar, he added.

Qatar Society of Engineers Launches Inaugural Qatar Architecture Award

The Qatar Society of Engineers has launched the inaugural Qatar Architecture Award 2026, establishing a national platform to promote architectural excellence and innovation, empower local talent and advance sustainable solutions tailored to the needs of Qatari families.The inaugural edition focuses on the design of a residential villa that meets the modern requirements of the Qatari family, taking into account the State's latest building regulations and seeking innovative, practical designs that can be realistically implemented.The announcement was made at a press conference, where the Society said the competition is open to two main categories. The first is for individual architects, engineers and designers who are Qatari nationals or residents of Qatar, while the second is reserved for officially licensed and accredited Qatari architectural consulting firms.Eng. Amna Mohammed Al Naama, Chairperson of the Qatar Society of Engineers, said the launch reflects the Society's commitment, together with its partners, to supporting initiatives that contribute to Qatar's urban and development landscape.She said the initiative builds on national efforts to enhance the quality and sustainability of the built environment and support the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030."Architecture is not merely buildings and static designs; it is an expression of national identity and a reflection of society's culture and needs," Al Naama said, stressing that the theme of the inaugural edition -- designing a Qatari residential villa -- was chosen because of its direct relevance to the lives of Qatari families and citizens. She said the award seeks to generate innovative and practical architectural and engineering solutions that can be implemented on the ground, while taking into account modern building requirements and striking a balance between Qatar's architectural identity, sustainability standards and economic efficiency.The designs must also remain within the QR 1.2 million ceiling of the government housing loan, she added.The award offers total prize money of QR 180,000, to be distributed among the winners. Outstanding entries will also be published and showcased during Qatari Engineers Day on January 25, with the possibility of developing selected designs in cooperation with relevant authorities.Al Naama called on engineering professionals, national firms and designers to take part in the competition and contribute their ideas and expertise to enriching Qatar's architectural landscape. Eng. Mubarak Mahboob Al Nuaimi, Director of Licensing and Training Affairs at the Real Estate Regulatory Authority - Aqarat, said the launch reflects growing interest in developing Qatar's architectural and urban landscape and fostering a culture of creativity and innovation in the sector. He described the Qatar Architecture Award as a platform that celebrates architectural and engineering excellence, highlights talent and expertise, and encourages designs and urban solutions that combine authenticity, innovation and sustainability.Al Nuaimi announced Aqarat's official sponsorship of the award, reaffirming the Authority's role in regulating and developing Qatar's real estate sector and supporting initiatives aimed at raising the quality of real estate projects and promoting professional standards, sustainability and innovation.He said the partnership would encourage professionals and specialists to put forward innovative ideas that enrich Qatar's architectural landscape while reflecting the country's identity, values and future aspirations.Noura Al Qubaisi, Director of Communications and Public Relations at Msheireb Properties, said advancing the architectural sector requires broad cooperation among government entities, consulting firms and academia, as well as an environment that encourages the exchange of expertise.Against this backdrop, she said Msheireb Properties and Doha Design District were participating as strategic partners, reflecting their commitment to sustainable architecture, quality of life and national identity.In remarks to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Eng. Saud Abdullah Al Dulaimi, a board member and secretary of the Qatar Society of Engineers, said the award's primary objective was to generate innovative architectural ideas from engineers and accredited consulting firms in Qatar and create a pool of designs that could expand the options available to citizens planning to build their homes.He described the initiative as a strategic step toward supporting national talent in innovative architecture, noting that the choice of a residential villa for the Qatari family as the theme of the inaugural edition was driven by its direct connection to the lives of Qatari citizens.The competition, he said, is intended to produce practical engineering and architectural solutions that combine Qatar's architectural heritage with the requirements of contemporary life and can be implemented in real-world residential projects.Applications wil Arthritis treatment options available in Doha

Many people think arthritis is simply an unavoidable part of aging. In reality, arthritis is a medical condition that can affect adults of various ages and significantly impact mobility, independence, and quality of life. For residents of Doha and across Qatar, arthritis is one of the leading causes of chronic joint pain, stiffness, and reduced physical activity. The encouraging news is that modern treatment options have evolved considerably, allowing many patients to manage symptoms effectively and maintain an active lifestyle for years. Understanding the available treatment approaches is the first step toward making informed decisions about your joint health.  Understanding Arthritis Arthritis is not a single disease but a group of conditions that cause inflammation, pain, and degeneration within the joints.Common forms include:OsteoarthritisRheumatoid arthritisPost-traumatic arthritisInflammatory arthritisThe knees, hips, shoulders, hands, and spine are among the most commonly affected areas.  Common SymptomsSymptoms may develop gradually and often include:Joint painMorning stiffnessSwellingReduced mobilityDifficulty walking or climbing stairsDecreased participation in daily activitiesMany patients initially dismiss these symptoms until they begin interfering with work, exercise, or sleep.  Non-Surgical Treatment Options Lifestyle and Activity Modifications Early-stage arthritis can often be managed by reducing stress on affected joints, maintaining a healthy weight, and staying physically active.Regular movement helps preserve joint function and may reduce stiffness.  Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Structured physiotherapy programs are frequently recommended to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and overall joint function.Functional rehabilitation focuses not only on pain reduction but also on helping patients maintain independence and long-term mobility.  MBST Therapy For some patients with osteoarthritis and degenerative joint conditions, MBST (Molecular Biophysical Stimulation Therapy) may be considered as part of a non-surgical treatment strategy. This therapy is designed to support cellular activity within cartilage, bone, and soft tissues without the need for injections or medication. MBST is typically used alongside a broader treatment plan that may include orthopedic assessment, physiotherapy, activity modification, and long-term joint health management. Suitability depends on the type and severity of arthritis, making specialist evaluation important before considering this treatment option. Advanced Treatment Approaches When symptoms persist despite conservative management, specialist evaluation becomes increasingly important. Accurate diagnosis often involves orthopedic assessment and advanced diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays or MRI scans, to determine the extent of joint damage and guide treatment decisions. For some patients, regenerative therapies, image-guided procedures, or specialized rehabilitation pathways may be considered as part of a broader management strategy.  When Is Surgery Considered? Joint replacement surgery is typically considered when arthritis causes severe pain, significant loss of function, and reduced quality of life despite non-surgical treatment. Modern orthopedic surgery, combined with comprehensive rehabilitation programs, has helped many patients return to everyday activities with greater comfort and confidence. Recovery planning remains a crucial component of successful long-term outcomes.  When Should Someone Seek Medical Evaluation? Anyone experiencing persistent joint pain, increasing stiffness, swelling, or difficulty performing daily activities should consider medical evaluation. Early diagnosis often provides more treatment options and may help slow the progression of joint-related problems.   About DOC Medical Center DOC Medical Center is a specialized healthcare institution in Qatar focused on orthopedics, spine care, sports medicine, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, diagnostic imaging, neurology, neurosurgery, regenerative medicine, and surgical services. Through its Al Sadd, Lusail, and Izghawa branches, DOC provides patient-centered multidisciplinary care that supports patients from diagnosis through recovery. DOC Medical Center was recognized as the Best Medical Center in Qatar – Medicare Qatar Healthcare Awards 2025 and holds ACHSI EQUIP 7 International Accreditation, reflecting its commitment to clinical quality, patient safety, and evidence-based care. Don't accept joint pain as normal. Persistent joint pain should not be accepted as a normal part of everyday life. An early assessment can help identify the cause of symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment pathway for maintaining mobility and independence.  Phone: +974 4475 3333Email: [email protected]://www.docmedc.com/

Gohar survives heated Khafagy clash

Former World No. 1 Nouran Gohar set up a quarter-final showdown with arch-rival Hania El Hammamy after surviving a heated five-game duel with Egyptian compatriot Malak Khafagy at the Qatar Classic.Gohar, playing her first event since giving birth to her first child in April, had to dig deep to overcome Khafagy in an acrimonious affair that included more than 50 refereeing decisions over 91 minutes of chaotic play in Doha.The match descended into a scrappy, physical battle, with neither player able to find any sustained rhythm or accuracy. This was punctuated when Gohar required significant physio treatment after a heavy blow to the nose midway through the third game – an echo of the broken nose she sustained on this very court two years ago.After the players traded games deep into a dramatic decider, it was fifth seed Gohar who eventually prevailed, clinching victory by an 11-7, 9-11, 13-11, 12-14, 11-9 scoreline. “This is the part of being back that I didn’t miss.” Gohar said after the match. “I didn’t enjoy my squash today, but I did enjoy my resilience and mental toughness. I need to go through matches like these.Gohar will face off against El Hammamy for the 34th time on the PSA Squash Tour in quarter-finals, after the World No.1 defeated England’s Lucy Turmel by an 11-4, 11-8, 11-7 scoreline.Elsewhere, World No.9 Tinne Gilis fended off India’s teenage sensation Anahat Singh in five games to advance to her first Platinum quarter-final since the Windy City Open in February. The eighth seed was forced to battle back from 2-1 down to set up a quarter-final tie with World No. 5 Sivasangari Subramaniam, after the Malaysian proved too strong for Salma Hany.In the men’s event, World No. 1 Mostafa Asal overcame a superb showing from Yannick Wilhelmi, while World No. 13 Aly Abou Eleinen claimed a clinical three-game victory over Baptiste Masotti.World No. 9 Marwan ElShorbagy and World No. 19 Gregoire Marche were the final two players to secure wins on day two of action at the Khalifa International Squash Complex after defeating Curtis Malik and Timothy Brownell, respectively.
