 Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Transport, has provided a grant to Lebanon’s ministry of public works and transport in support of Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport, including navigation equipment and technical systems. Qatar’s ambassador to Lebanon Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani participated in the official handover ceremony held at the airport, with the attendance and sponsorship of Lebanon’s Minister of Public Works and Transport Fayez Rasamny, charge d’affaires at the US embassy in Lebanon Keith Hannigan, airport security commander Brigadier-General Fadi Kfoury, and other officials. Sheikh Saud stressed in remarks during the ceremony that the grant reflects the deep ties between the two countries and Qatar’s firm commitment to supporting Lebanon. The envoy emphasised that at a time when Lebanon is facing delicate circumstances that require joint efforts to confront current challenges, Qatar continues to stand by its side through supporting official and vital institutions, including Beirut International Airport, in a way that contributes to enhancing its operational capabilities and improving the level of services provided. He also expressed his appreciation to Rasamny for the constructive co-operation, and to all officials and staff at Beirut International Airport for their outstanding efforts and dedicated work in serving this vital facility. Rasamny thanked Qatar for its grant and continued support, affirming that this gratitude would only grow, and that Qatar has always stood by Lebanon, particularly amid the country’s economic challenges and growing burdens and needs.  

Fragile ceasefire, stalled US-Iran talks and sector-specific selling pressure, amidst cautious investor sentiments, had reflected on the Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE), which saw its key index plunge 221 points, wiping off about QR15bn in capitalisation this week.The banking counter witnessed higher than average selling pressure as the 20-stock Qatar Index plummeted 2.06% this week which saw the QSE reconstitute the index committee.“The weakness appears to be driven by a combination of factors rather than single event,” an analyst with a leading commercial bank told Gulf Times.The Islamic index was seen declining slower than the other indices of the main bourse this week, which saw the international credit rating agency Fitch raise its near-term oil and European gas price assumptions due to the disrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows from Qatar through the Strait of Hormuz and damage to the country’s LNG infrastructure.The market was heavily skewed towards shakers in the main market this week which saw Barwa Real Estate to replace Vodafone Qatar in the main index, effective from June 1, 2026.The consumer goods and industrials sectors accounted for more than 57% of the trading volumes in the main market this week which saw a total of 0.15mn AlRayan Bank-sponsored exchange traded fund QATR worth QR0.33mn trade across 69 deals.More than 70% of the traded constituents were in the red in the main market this week, which saw a total of 0.01mn Doha Bank-sponsored exchange traded fund QETF worth QR0.12mn trade across 16 transactions.Market capitalisation eroded QR14.69bn or 2.29% to QR626.65bn on the back of large and midcap segments this week which saw no trading of sovereign bonds.Highlighting that the foreign funds were reducing exposure or taking profits; the analyst said in smaller markets like Qatar, foreign institutional flows can “significantly” impact the index performance.Trade turnover and volumes were on the decline in the main market this week which saw no trading of sovereign sukuks.Trade turnover and volumes were also on the decrease in the venture market this week which saw no trading of treasury bills.The Total Return Index plunged 2.06%, the All Share Index by 2.15% and the All Islamic Index by 1.36% this week.The banks and financial services sector index tanked 3.11%, consumer goods and services (1.58%), real estate (1.53%), transport (1.34%), industrials (1.08%) and telecom (0.78%); even as insurance gained 0.87% this week.Of the 54 stocks, as many as 38 declined, while 15 increased and one was unchanged this week.Major shakers in the main market included Estithmar Holding, QNB, Al Faleh Educational Holding, Baladna, Qatar German Medical Devices, Qatar Islamic Bank, Commercial Bank, Doha Bank, Woqod, almeera, Industries Qatar, Ezdan, United Development Company, Ooredoo and Nakilat. In the juniour bourse, Techno Q saw its shares depreciate in value this week.Nevertheless, Al Khaleej Takaful, Qatar Oman Investment, Qatar General Insurance and Reinsurance, Mannai Corporation, Dlala, Ahlibank Qatar, Gulf International Services, Qamco and Vodafone Qatar were among the gainers in the main market this week.The main bourse saw 16% contraction in trade volumes to 715.28mn shares, 6% in value to QR1.95bn and 10% in deals to 118,072 this week.In the venture market, trade volumes plummeted 37% to 0.71mn equities, value by 37% to QR1.59mn and transactions by 61% to 113 this week.“The QE Index may remain volatile but range-bound with geopolitics and oil prices playing crucial roles. Any signs of easing tensions between Iran and the US could support the Gulf Cooperation Council or GCC equities including Qatar,” the analyst said, adding the market has also become attractive in valuation. 

Barwa Real Estate Company will replace Vodafone Qatar in the Qatar Stock Exchange's main barometer, effective from June 1.The other constituents of the 20-stock QE index will remain QNB, Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), Industries Qatar (IQ), Nakilat, Commercial Bank, AlRayan Bank, Ooredoo, QIIB, Dukhan Bank, Milaha, Woqod, Nebras Energy (formerly Qatar Electricity and Water or QEWC), Doha Bank, Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding (MPHC), Baladna, Gulf International Services, Qamco, Estithmar Holding and Ezdan.Under the new index practices, a review is carried out twice a year to ensure that the selection and weighting of the constituents continues to reflect the purpose of the index."It (index reconstitution) is a mechanism that keeps stock market indices updated, representative, and aligned with current market conditions," market sources said, adding it also has important market implications as stocks added often experience increased demand.The QSE had on Thursday reconstituted the index committee, reflecting the continued commitment to strengthening the governance, transparency and institutional oversight of its market indices.The reconstitution, which is pursuant to Resolution No 11 of the QSE board of directors’ first meeting of 2026, comes as part of the ongoing enhancement of the index governance framework to develop market infrastructure, improve investor access to market information, and support the continued growth and competitiveness of Qatar’s capital market.The Al Rayan Islamic Index components remain the same as Aamal Company, Meeza QSTP, IQ, QIB, AlRayan Bank, Ooredoo, Dukhan Bank, Woqod, United Development Company, MPHC, Barwa, Vodafone Qatar, Milaha, Nebras Energy, QIIB, Qamco, Estithmar Holding, Medicare Group, Al Meera, Ezdan, Baladna, Qatar National Cement and Qatar Islamic Insurance.Similarly, there will be no change in the QE All Share Index.All listed companies are ranked by giving free float market capitalisation with a 50% weight and average daily value traded also 50% weight.Companies with velocity less than 5% are excluded from the review, as are entities whereby a single shareholder can only own less than 1% of outstanding shares.Any qualifying component exceeding 15% weight in the index as of market close March 28, 2023 will have its weight capped at the 15% level and excess weight allocated to remaining stocks proportionately.The index free-float for a stock is total outstanding shares minus shares directly owned by government and its affiliates, those held by founders and board members and shareholdings above 10% or greater of the total outstanding (except those held by those held by pension funds in the country).The bourse has seven sectors – banks and financial services (with 13 constituents), insurance (seven), industrials (10), real estate (four), telecom (two), transportation (three) and consumer goods and services (15) in the ‘All Share Index’. 

 The Civil Service and Government Development Bureau has revealed strong performance indicators for government service centers across the country during April with a total of 44,663 services completed across various sectors, underscoring the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize public services, and enhancing efficiency of transactions.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs topped the list of government entities in terms of services delivered, completing 15,525 transactions during the month. The Ministry of Justice ranked second with 10,712 completed services, followed by the Ministry of Labour in third place with 8,143 services. Other ministries and institutions also recorded notable performance levels. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry completed 5,099 services, while Qatar Civil Service and Government Development Bureau itself processed 1,286 services. The Ministry of Social Development and Family delivered around 990 services, and Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation completed 988 services during the same period.Meanwhile, the Ministry of Municipality processed 945 services, while Qatar Central Securities Depository completed 518 services. The Supreme Judiciary Council recorded 376 services, and the General Retirement and Social Insurance Authority finalized 81 services.The report further highlighted the growing public engagement through customer satisfaction surveys designed to evaluate government services. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs again led in this category with 1,689 submitted surveys, followed by the Ministry of Justice with 1,427 surveys. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry recorded 872 surveys, while the Ministry of Labour received 666 responses.Such indicators demonstrate the commitment of the government entities to improving service quality and enhancing the customer experience by developing operational mechanisms, boosting institutional efficiency, and adopting faster and more flexible solutions for processing transactions. Government entities also encouraged the public to participate in service evaluations through the “Sharek” platform, which supports continuous improvement efforts by collecting feedback and suggestions aimed at raising the quality of public services.In the meantime, the statistics issued by the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau showed that Al Hilal Service Center ranked first among government service centers in April, completing 20,376 services and receiving 1,480 customer evaluation surveys. Al Rayyan Service Center came second with 12,733 completed services and 1,378 surveys, while Al Wakrah Service Center processed 3,833 services and received 529 evaluations. Lusail Pearl Service Center completed 3,779 services alongside 446 customer surveys. Meanwhile, Rawdat Al Hamama Service Center handled 2,287 services and received 380 surveys, Al Khor Service Center completed 1,381 services with 218 surveys, and Al Shamal Service Center processed 202 services alongside 23 evaluations.

Qatar’s Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah and his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera won all six demanding special stages to move into a commanding lead after the first leg of the Jordan Rally.The Autotek Motorsport Skoda Fabia RS driver was in a class of his own on the third round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) and had built up an advantage of 1min 12.8sec at the night halt.Al-Attiyah said: “It was a good feeling all day and we won every stage. We have a good gap now, a good lead. Now we try to keep going like this. We pushed from the morning and we took a good time. We managed the times this afternoon and will try and do the same tomorrow. We sent the data to the engineer just to check everything is okay.”Stages were held in the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea areas, but Oman’s Abdullah al-Rawahi and Ata al-Hmoud admitted that their choice of medium tyres was a mistake for the opening loop of three stages in their Oman Rally Team Skoda Fabia RS. The Omani trailed al-Attiyah by 51.4 seconds at the midday regroup and was unable to grab any time back in the afternoon.Saudi Arabia’s Hamza Bakhashab is tackling a first full programme of MERC rallies in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 supported by Jameel Motorsport. He and Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore settled into a comfortable third position.Jordan’s Shaker Jweihan was the dominant force in MERC2 at the first two rounds in the winter and opened his account on home gravel in similar fashion with Mustafa Juma in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. He managed his pace perfectly to conserve the car, avoided rocks thrown on to the racing line by the Rally2 cars running ahead and held fifth place.One of the drives of the day came from Palestine’s Hamadeh Uda. He teamed up with Zeid Abu Zeid in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X and climbed to seventh place.Mohammed al-Marri had the bragging rights over Qatari team-mate Rashid al-Muhannadi in the battle between the two Peugeot 208 Rally 4s entered by the QMMF. Al-Marri finished the day eighth ahead of the Jordanian duo of Shadi Shaban and Samer Issa. Al-Muhannadi was 11th.Saturday’s schedule consists of two runs through the Panorama (16.95km), Suwayma (11.12km) and Rawda (26.97km) specials before the ceremonial finish takes place in the HoverUp Park to the north of the Dead Sea. The second pass through Rawda will also act as the Power Stage with additional points available for the fastest crews. 

 Canada has expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East, warning of global consequences for security, trade, and economic stability, according to remarks made by Defence Minister David McGuinty.Speaking to the Qatar News Agency (QNA) in Doha yesterday, McGuinty said that Canada is "very concerned about the safety and security of the citizens and the residents of Qatar and of the entire Gulf region”.He described the current situation as "a difficult moment", voicing hopes for finding a resolution."We continue to call for a de-escalation of the situation, and hopefully we find a sustainable and durable cessation of hostilities," McGuinty said.He added that if a stable cessation of hostilities is achieved, Canada would join international partners exploring ways to keep the Strait of Hormuz open as an international waterway.McGuinty emphasised that the crisis has become a global issue rather than a regional one."It's having an effect on oil supply, on shipping, on insurance, on stability on the global markets," he said, warning of wider economic disruption, including food production and fertiliser supply chains affected by restrictions in maritime transport."This is having a significant impact on the global economy and global stability, so we have to come together multinationally, many countries, to try and bring this to a successful outcome,” the minister added.He said that Canada is engaging with international partners on possible support mechanisms across three areas – maritime expertise including sending vessels to monitor the situation, demining the waterway and providing assistance in the areas of intelligence and space capabilities.McGuinty added that Canada is not leading negotiations but supports diplomatic efforts involving regional and global actors."Qatar has always played an important role in brokering relationships and negotiations," he said, adding that broader dialogue involving multiple countries remains essential.On his visit to Doha, he said it reflects growing bilateral ties."The relationship we have with Qatar is a very important one,” McGuinty said. “It was very important to come here to demonstrate the closeness of the relationship and to try to deepen the relationship."He also highlighted potential co-operation in defence and technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, cryptography, and engineering research.McGuinty warned that the crisis is already affecting global systems."We're seeing air travel pulled back around the world,” he said. “We're seeing countries facing very high increases in prices and inflation. We're seeing the price of food continue to rise."He added that fertiliser supply chains are also being disrupted, pointing to broader global implications."It's no longer just an issue between the United States and Iran,” McGuinty stated. “It's a global issue, and we believe the way to resolve this is globally."He also noted international efforts led by France and the UK, involving around 50 countries, to support stability and maritime security."We're very supportive of the Qatari people,” the minister said. “We are re-engaging in a very direct way in this region." 

 The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recorded significant progress in healthcare development and patient services during 2025, according to its latest annual achievements report.The report highlighted major advances in clinical care, digital transformation, operational efficiency, and public access to medical services across Qatar.Introducing the report, HMC director-general Mohamed bin Khalifa al-Suwaidi described 2025 as a milestone year for the institution, stressing its continued role as Qatar’s leading provider of specialised healthcare services.He said that the HMC remained focused on expanding access to care, improving operational efficiency, and delivering patient-centred healthcare that meets society's evolving needs.The report outlines achievements in institutional performance, clinical development, digital innovation, and sustainability initiatives aligned with the Third National Development Strategy and the National Health Strategy.It also revealed strong growth in most healthcare indicators in 2025 compared to the previous year, reflecting rising demand for medical services and continued expansion in the healthcare sector.According to the report, inpatient admissions rose by 4% in 2025, reaching 159,109 cases, up from 152,741 in 2024.Surgical operations recorded even stronger growth, increasing by 11% to 80,218 procedures, up from 72,485 operations the previous year.Birth rates within HMC facilities also increased by 2%, with 28,464 deliveries recorded in 2025 compared to 27,822 in 2024.Emergency services experienced substantial growth as well.Adult emergency departments registered a 12% increase in visits, receiving 974,268 patients in 2025 compared to 869,230 the year before.In contrast, paediatric emergency centres saw a 7% decline in visits, with a total of 583,864 patients, down from 627,586 in 2024.Outpatient clinics across all specialties handled more than 3mn patient visits in 2025, marking an 8% increase from 2.86mn visits in 2024.Therapeutic procedures conducted in outpatient clinics also climbed by 11%, reaching 257,968 procedures.Telemedicine consultations declined by 14%, with 220,278 remote consultations recorded in 2025 compared to 256,277 during 2024, reflecting a broader return to in-person healthcare services.The report highlighted major increases in clinical support services.Laboratory testing rose by 8%, surpassing 26.4mn tests in 2025, while medical imaging procedures increased by 6% to more than 1.05mn scans.Pharmaceutical services also expanded, with nearly 9mn prescriptions dispensed during the year, a 5% increase compared to 2024.Ambulance transport operations recorded a 2% rise, reaching 210,676 cases in 2025, while emergency call volumes climbed to 310,101 calls compared to 287,838 calls the previous year.The helicopter ambulance missions remained relatively stable, recording 2,057 cases.One of the report’s key findings was the significant improvement in patient access to outpatient services.Among the top 20 medical specialties, 75% of Qatari patients were able to secure appointments within two weeks, with an average waiting period of 15 days.This represented a 32% improvement compared to 2024 in the number of patients seen within the targeted timeframe.The improvements were achieved through more efficient use of workforce resources and clinic spaces, expanded evening clinic operations in selected specialties, and targeted efforts to reduce missed appointments.The introduction of automatic cancellation policies for repeated no-shows and the adoption of strategic overbooking practices helped improve appointment availability and maximise clinic efficiency.The no-show rate stood at 13% in 2025, while controlled overbooking averaged 16%.These measures contributed to a dramatic reduction in waiting lists for Qatari patients, with pending appointments dropping from 16,654 in 2024 to just 849 in 2025.The report further showcased groundbreaking medical achievements that marked firsts for Qatar’s healthcare sector.Among the most notable milestones was the country’s first-ever heart transplant surgery, successfully performed at Heart Hospital.The operation represented a major advancement in cardiac care and was carried out by a multidisciplinary team involving specialists in surgery, cardiology, anaesthesia, intensive care, nursing, infectious diseases, nephrology, pathology, rehabilitation, psychiatry, and social services.The HMC performed Qatar’s first total ankle replacement surgery, representing a major development in orthopaedic medicine and offering renewed mobility for patients suffering from severe joint damage.Officials said that the achievement reflected the adoption of advanced surgical technologies and the continuous development of specialised medical expertise.Accordingly, during 2025, the HMC received several prestigious international awards and recognitions.The National Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolic Diseases Institute received a global leadership award for combating obesity during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.The corporation’s Extracorporeal Life Support Programme was honoured with an excellence award from Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation for Southwest Asia and Africa, while the HMC secured a prestigious Digital Innovation Award at the Google Cloud Summit.In addition, the World Health Organisation (WHO) renewed accreditation for the HMC’s Smoking Cessation Centre, and the corporation won an international Healthy Workplace Award, further cementing its growing reputation as a regional leader in healthcare excellence and innovation.

 The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) has concluded the National Scientific Research and Innovation Exhibition 2026 in co-operation with the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council.The 18th edition of the event was held at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) in downtown Doha under the theme *Promising researchers for Qatar.It brought together thousands of students and educators from schools across the country, highlighting growing interest in scientific research and innovation within Qatar's education system.According to organisers, 2,971 students participated this year, presenting 1,467 research projects from 249 schools.In addition, 672 teachers submitted 616 action research projects aimed at improving educational practices.At the closing ceremony, senior MoEHE and QRDI officials honoured winning students, teachers and partners for their contributions across multiple research competitions covering primary, preparatory and secondary levels.The event also recognised 10 student research projects conducted in collaboration with the Young Scientists Centre at Qatar University.Officials praised the level of participation and the quality of research presented, saying that it reflects growing scientific awareness and innovation skills among young people in Qatar, in line with national development and education goals. 

 Qatar's official Haj mission delegation departed for Saudi Arabia yesterday as part of preparations for this year's pilgrimage season, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf) said.The ministry stated that the delegation's departure follows ongoing field preparations by supporting teams already stationed in Saudi Arabia to ensure all services are in place for pilgrims from Qatar.Ali bin Sultan al-Misifri, the director of the Department of Haj and Umrah Affairs and deputy head of the Qatari Haj Mission, said that the mission would operate from its headquarters in the Al Naseem district of Makkah, co-ordinating with Haj campaigns from Qatar and the Saudi authorities to provide organised and efficient services.He added that specialised units covering religious guidance, medical care, logistics, inspection, communications and technical support would work together to assist pilgrims throughout their journey.The ministry said the mission aims to ensure pilgrims from Qatar can perform Haj safely and smoothly, in line with the ministry's 2025-30 strategy to improve services for pilgrims and enhance their overall experience.  

His Excellency Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi met with China's Special Envoy for Afghanistan Yue Xiaoyong, who is visiting the country.During the meeting, they discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan and ways to strengthen joint international efforts to promote security and stability in Afghanistan.HE Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the State of Qatar's full support for efforts aimed at resolving conflicts through peaceful means and to bolster peace and stability regionally and internationally.
