Her Excellency Minister of State for International Cooperation Dr Maryam bint Ali Al Misnad met here on Tuesday with Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Pierre Krahenbuhl, who is visiting Qatar.The talks focused on cooperation between the State of Qatar and the ICRC and ways to strengthen joint efforts to support international humanitarian work, protect civilians and people affected by armed conflicts, and uphold the principles of international humanitarian law.The two sides also discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza and Sudan, including efforts to ensure aid reaches people most in need.They stressed the importance of protecting civilians and humanitarian workers and reducing the suffering of people affected by conflicts.Both sides underlined the need for continued cooperation to promote respect for international humanitarian law and ensure adherence to its principles.

For educator Alpine Gomez, teaching begins with a simple belief: learners thrive when they understand why something matters, feel confident enough to ask questions and have opportunities to apply what they know in practical ways.  Originally from the Philippines, Gomez has built her career across university teaching, professional learning and education in Qatar. A magna cum laude graduate who later completed a Master’s degree, she said her academic journey has shaped the way she approaches teaching, mentorship and professional development.  Gomez told Gulf Times that her interest in education grew from a genuine desire to help young people recognise their abilities and develop confidence in what they can achieve.“I have always enjoyed working with others, sharing ideas and finding ways to make learning meaningful. Over time, I realised that education offered me the opportunity to do all of those things while making a positive difference in students’ lives,” she said.  What appeals to her most about teaching is the individuality of every learner.  “No two learners are the same. Every student brings different experiences, interests and strengths into the classroom, and I really enjoy creating an environment where they feel confident enough to participate, make mistakes, ask questions and grow,” Gomez said.  Before coming to Qatar, she taught at university level in the Philippines. Her work later expanded to include professionals in Qatar seeking career growth, giving her experience with learners at different stages of their academic and professional lives.  Her own years as a student also influenced the educator she would become.  While completing her Master’s degree, Gomez recalls the encouragement she received from Ms Buenviaje, then vice-president for Academic Affairs, and Mr Baking, then university president of Don Honorio Ventura State University, now Pampanga State University. She said both recognised her potential while she was still developing her academic and professional direction.Those experiences showed her how confidence can grow when learners feel supported by the people around them.  She also credits her experience with NEBOSH UK with helping strengthen her understanding of effective teaching.“Effective teaching is not simply about delivering content. It is about building relationships, understanding your learners, supporting them to improve, and helping them develop confidence and independence,” she said.  That principle remains central to her work. Gomez aims to create learning environments where students feel valued and comfortable contributing ideas, taking ownership of their learning and learning from mistakes without fearing that they must get everything right immediately.  Coming to Qatar more than a decade ago opened a new chapter in Gomez’s professional life and introduced her to a highly international educational environment.She said she was drawn to the country by its rapid development, investment in education and opportunity to work with students and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.Working in Qatar, she explained, has required her to think carefully about how teaching can respond to different experiences, cultures and expectations.She considers diversity one of the most valuable aspects of being an educator in Qatar.  A classroom can bring together learners with different nationalities, languages, educational experiences and approaches to problem-solving. Teaching, therefore, cannot always rely on a single method. Educators need to listen, observe and understand how students respond while creating space for different perspectives.  Gomez’s teaching philosophy centres on helping students understand how what they learn connects with the world around them.“My teaching philosophy is centred on the idea that students learn best when they understand why something matters and can see how it connects to the world around them,” she said.For this reason, she favours learning experiences that encourage active participation. She asks learners to investigate, collaborate, solve problems, communicate their ideas and apply their knowledge rather than relying primarily on memorisation.  Academic knowledge remains essential, she said, but students also need confidence in applying what they know. Critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration and resilience are among the skills she wants learners to develop alongside subject knowledge.  Gomez particularly values opportunities to connect learning with Qatar’s culture, heritage and wider community.Through her experience with Northford Educational Consulting, she has been able to look beyond conventional classroom settings and consider how learning can respond to the environment in which students live.  “Qatar has such a rich heritage, and I believe students benefit enormously when they can see that what they are learning has a connection to their own surroundings, history and identity,” she said. Local examples, cultural events, community experiences, Qatar’s development and its heritage can provide immediate points of connection for learners and make lessons more relevant to everyday life. Such connections can also help students understand that education does not exist separately from society. History, culture, community and contemporary development can all become part of the learning process.  Gomez believes educators themselves must remain willing to learn.Her time in Qatar has allowed her to collaborate with professionals from different backgrounds, participate in new initiatives and learn from a broad educational community. These experiences have encouraged her to reassess her methods, listen to others and remain open to new approaches.  “I think professional growth comes from being willing to learn from others, try new approaches and remain open to change. Qatar has certainly provided that environment for me,” she said.Education, she believes, should not end when someone leaves school, university or a training programme. Learning can continue throughout a person’s professional and personal life.“I want students to feel that education is not simply something they complete at school, but something that gives them the skills, confidence and mindset to make a positive contribution to their communities and to the wider world,” Gomez said.  For Gomez, who has experienced education as a high-achieving student, university educator and professional in Qatar’s multicultural environment, confidence remains at the heart of teaching. 

As artificial intelligence (AI), digital sovereignty and smart-city technologies rapidly reshape economies and societies worldwide, Qatar is well positioned to translate these global trends into locally relevant solutions while maintaining security, privacy and public trust, according to technology expert Dr Thamer al-Qadi.With more than 25 years of experience in technology leadership, cybersecurity, and digital transformation, al-Qadi, currently the director of Information Technology at Katara Cultural Village, believes Qatar’s next phase of technological development will depend not simply on adopting new technologies but on using them responsibly and strategically.One of the most significant emerging opportunities is Agentic AI, intelligent systems capable of performing tasks with varying degrees of autonomy.“Qatar has a strong opportunity to benefit from Agentic AI by using intelligent agents to improve efficiency in public services while maintaining trust, privacy, and security,” al-Qadi said.He recommends that organisations begin with relatively low-risk applications such as customer support, document management, and scheduling, reporting and administrative processes.This would allow employees to focus more on strategic, high-value work rather than repetitive tasks.However, he stressed that strong safeguards must accompany AI adoption.“AI agents should be given only the minimum access required to perform specific tasks, while important decisions continue to be reviewed and approved by people,” he said.According to al-Qadi, a successful AI framework should combine clear governance, robust data protection, strong cybersecurity controls, human oversight and continuous monitoring.Pilot projects should be introduced first, with organisations measuring their results before gradually expanding successful applications.“The goal is not to build AI agents that can do everything, but to develop trusted AI solutions that support productivity while keeping accountability, transparency, and decision-making under human control,” he said.The rise of AI is also transforming the skills required by students and professionals.“Students and professionals need to move away from rote technical execution and focus on system synthesis and prompt architecture,” al-Qadi said. “The critical skills of tomorrow are algorithmic literacy, data curation, and cognitive agility. We need ‘AI orchestrators’, professionals who understand business logic and can direct a fleet of AI agents to execute it.”He called for universities in Qatar to integrate AI-assisted workflows across disciplines, while teaching students to critically evaluate and audit AI-generated outputs rather than simply producing them.Beyond technical expertise, he highlighted critical thinking, judgement, creativity, emotional intelligence, communication, adaptability and data literacy as increasingly important capabilities.Qatar’s startup ecosystem, meanwhile, is entering what al-Qadi describes as a new phase, supported by increased investment and access to capital.Smart cities and urban technology represent particularly promising areas.Developments such as Msheireb Downtown Doha demonstrate how Internet of Things (IoT) networks, digital twins and AI can be integrated into urban environments, providing opportunities for startups to develop and commercialise solutions focused on efficiency, sustainability and quality of life.Logistics and supply-chain technology also offer significant potential, given Qatar’s strategic position as a regional transportation and trade hub.Technologies covering fleet management, route optimisation, customs processes and intelligent logistics platforms could help create a more connected and resilient ecosystem.“My view is that Qatar can become not only a market for technology, but a regional hub for developing and exporting it,” al-Qadi said.As digital infrastructure becomes increasingly cloud-based, he believes Qatar should avoid treating data sovereignty as a simple choice between local infrastructure and international cloud providers.Instead, organisations should adopt a hybrid approach, classifying information according to its sensitivity.Highly confidential data, including health records, financial information and government documents, should be protected through trusted local environments or sovereign cloud infrastructure operating under national jurisdiction. Less-sensitive workloads can, meanwhile, benefit from global cloud platforms and their scalability.Local control of encryption keys, awareness of legal and contractual obligations, and multi-cloud strategies can provide additional protection while reducing dependence on a single provider.“Data sovereignty should be viewed as a spectrum rather than a binary choice: keep the sensitive and business-critical data close to home, while allowing lower-risk workloads and data to leverage global infrastructure for greater agility and cost efficiency,” he said.Al-Qadi believes the greatest challenge is not introducing AI itself, but creating an organisational culture capable of using it effectively.“The biggest challenge facing organisations isn’t the introduction of AI, but rather the belief that simply buying technology is enough to guarantee success,” he said. “Technology alone doesn’t create an advanced organisation unless it’s accompanied by a culture of continuous learning, proactive leadership, and an environment that fosters innovation and experimentation.”His message to employees: “The question every employee should ask themselves isn’t ‘Will AI take my job?’ Instead, it’s ‘Do I possess the skills to be a partner in this transformation, not just a spectator?’”For Qatar, the opportunity lies in combining global technological advances with local priorities, strong governance and human expertise, building a smarter, more secure and resilient digital economy capable not only of adopting the technologies of tomorrow, but of developing and exporting them. 

The third edition of the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum 3-2-1 Blitz Chess Championship for Under-16 was held with great enthusiasm on Tuesday.The tournament, held at the museum hall, saw the participation of 50 players, including 40 Qatari players. The competition was held using the Swiss system and consisted of six rounds.American Adam Shahab al-Din finished in first place with 6 points, while Qatari national team player Asma al-Hammadi finished second with 5 points. Jordanian Jad Awad was third, also with 5 points, but with a lower number of moves.Khaled Majid al-Zubara won the Best Qatari Player prize with 5 points, while Sarah al-Mudahka won the Best Qatari Female Player prize with 4 points.In other categories, Ali al-Sharshani won the Best Qatari Player prize in the under-12 category, and Munira Jassim al-Fakhro was the Best Qatari Female Player in the under-12 category. In the under-10 section, Issa Rashid al-Marikhi won the Best Qatari Player award, and Aisha Jassim al-Fakhro won the Best Qatari Female Player award.In the under-8 category, Tamim Abdulaziz was the Best Qatari Player while Aisha al-Kuwari the Best Qatari Female Player.Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association (QCA), expressed his great pleasure at the overwhelming participation from various nationalities, noting that the tournament was held in partnership with the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum 3-2-1 as part of QCA's aim to promote chess culture in the community.Al-Mudahka also expressed his gratitude to the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum 3-2-1 for their cooperation in organizing the tournament for a third successive year.
