Qatar for end to double standards in global law

Qatar has called for international law to be applied without selectivity or double standards, stressing that restoring trust in global institutions requires an end to crimes against the Palestinian people and accountability for those responsible.Addressing a high-level meeting on upholding international law on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Adviser to the Prime Minister and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Dr Majed bin Mohammed al-Ansari said the credibility of the international legal system depended on its consistent application.He reaffirmed Qatar’s unwavering commitment to the UN Charter and the principles of international law, particularly the sovereign equality of states and the peaceful settlement of disputes.Dr al-Ansari stressed the importance of accountability for violations of international law, particularly in the occupied Palestinian territories, and reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and an independent state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.Restoring confidence in international institutions, he said, required halting the ongoing crimes against Palestinians, who continued to suffer from the expansion of the occupation and the denial of their most basic right to life.He cited restrictions on aid deliveries, ongoing assassinations and daily targeting, as well as attacks on paramedics, aid workers and journalists, stressing that perpetrators must not escape punishment.Dr al-Ansari said His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani had clearly articulated this principle in his address to the UN General Assembly, calling on the international community to demonstrate its seriousness in upholding values and the rule of law.HH the Amir had emphasised that the law must apply equally to all, otherwise it lost its meaning when enforced against the weak while the strong were exempted.Dr al-Ansari said Qatar’s principled positions, consistent with international law and international legitimacy, were closely linked to its diplomatic approach, with mediation and the peaceful settlement of disputes forming a firm pillar of its foreign policy.Qatar’s efforts extended beyond mediation and facilitating dialogue between conflicting parties to include humanitarian responses to suffering caused by wars and natural disasters, alongside support for human development across the region and beyond.He stressed that peace was a mission for the entire world, which no single state or group of states could monopolise or claim exclusive stewardship over.He called for stronger joint action and the development of global peace supply chains, through which the components of peace could be created and brought together through multilateral mechanisms and international partnerships for the benefit of humanity.Dr al-Ansari reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to these principles and its support for multilateral co-operation, dialogue and peaceful solutions grounded in international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Qatar to host 2027 MotoGP from March 12 to 14

The 2027 MotoGP calendar has been confirmed, marking the return of the Grand Prix of Qatar to Lusail International Circuit (LIC), the only night race in the calendar, from March 12 to 14.As the second round of the 2027 MotoGP calendar, LIC will follow the season opener in Buriram, Thailand, from March 5-7, with the championship concluding in Valencia from November 26-28.LIC has hosted MotoGP since 2004 and made history in 2008 by staging the championship’s first-ever night race. The circuit is among a select group of venues to host all three major motorsport events; MotoGP, Formula 1 and the FIA World Endurance Championship.As with every round on the calendar, LIC will once again feature the Sprint in 2027, giving fans an additional opportunity to experience competitive on-track action.The 5.38km circuit, with its 16 turns and long main straight, has become renowned for fast racing, while its world-class lighting system creates one of the sport’s most distinctive settingsLIC will also host Qatar 1812 KM – FIA World Endurance Championship from March 25-27 in 2027, with the two events taking place just two weeks apart. Two new circuits added in calendar shake-up for 2027Meanwhile, MotoGP has added two new circuits in Argentina and Australia for the 22-race 2027 calendar. The first new track will be in Buenos Aires in April, the second leg of a three-race American swing that starts with Goiania in Brazil, which staged its first race this season, and finishes in Austin, Texas.The second addition is a street circuit in Adelaide, on November 14 at the end of a five-race late-season swing down through Asia to Australia.The Autodromo Oscar y Juan Galvez in Buenos Aires replaces Termas de Hondo, more than 1,100 kilometres inland from the capital. That circuit was on and off the MotoGP calendar between 2014 and its last appearance in 2025. Buenos Aires last hosted races in 1999.In Australia, Phillip Island near Melbourne has hosted races since 1989, but its contract expires after this season and the Victoria State Government rejected a plan by MotoGP to move the race to the track used by Formula One in Albert Park in the heart of the city.The race in Adelaide, which will require laying track in parklands, has met with local opposition. Hungary has been dropped from the schedule after just two years. The race was poorly attended and the Balaton Park circuit was reportedly unpopular with riders.

Breetzke ton leads South Africa to 67-run win over Australia

Matthew Breetzke scored a superb 112 to guide South Africa to a 67-run victory over Australia in the first one-day international in Durban on Thursday, but the tourists will rue the loss of cheap wickets as they faltered in their chase.South Africa posted 297 for eight in their 50 overs and Australia were well on course after a fast start, until poor shot selection caused their charge to collapse and they finished on 230 all out, losing their last nine wickets for 101 runs.Australia will welcome the likely return of captain Pat Cummins for the second match in the three-game series in Johannesburg on Sunday, but if this series is a fact-finding mission ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, there will be much food for thought.The toughest time to bat was in the morning and Australia won the toss and decided to bowl, strangling the South African run-rate early on.But when Breetzke came in at number four, he played conventional cricket shots to get his innings started, before he found a willing partner in big-hitting Marco Jansen.Breetzke, who averages over 60 with the bat in his 15 ODIs, scored his 112 from 106 deliveries and Jansen equalled his career best with 75 in 59 deliveries as the pair put on 107 for the sixth wicket.At one stage South Africa looked as though they may not make 250, so their score of 297 for eight was above par.Australia started their innings in brilliant fashion as Mitch Marsh blasted 60 from 36 balls and put on 90 in 9.2 overs for the first wicket with Travis Head (36 from 37 balls).But too many batters threw their wickets away under little pressure and from being well on top in the chase, the momentum changed as wickets slowed the run-rate.Jansen’s sensational diving one-handed catch in the outfield to dismiss Matt Renshaw (44) left Australia on 215-7, a position they never recovered from.South African spinners Keshav Maharaj (4-20 in 9.2 overs) and Bjorn Fortuin (2-34 in 8) were the catalyst for the change in momentum with brilliant control. BRIEF SCORESSouth Africa 297 for 8 (Breetzke 112, Jansen 75, Ellis 3-57) beat Australia 230 (Marsh 60, Maharaj 4-20) by 67 runs

Global airport passenger traffic reaches record 9.8bn in 2025, says ACI

Airports worldwide carried a record 9.8bn passengers in 2025, according to Airports Council International (ACI) World, with air cargo volumes also hitting an all time high. But momentum has cooled in 2026, with passenger growth slowing amid geopolitical and economic headwinds, even as cargo continues to expand, noted ACI. The figures come from ACI World’s 2026 Annual World Airport Traffic Report, based on data from 2,817 commercial airports worldwide. The dataset covers an estimated 97% of scheduled global passenger traffic, offering the most comprehensive picture yet of how the world moves through its airports.“The 2025 results confirm what this industry has shown year after year: long term demand for air travel remains strong, and more capacity will be needed,” said Justin Erbacci, ACI World’s director general. He added that meeting demand requires expanding capacity, maximising existing infrastructure, and advocating for regulation that enables investment rather than blocks it, while recognising airports as strategic assets for their communities.Air cargo reached a record 131.2mn tonnes over the year, while aircraft movements climbed to 103.1mn. Yet the headline numbers mask a more unsettled picture emerging in 2026. Geopolitical tensions, airspace disruption and rising costs have begun to reshape the industry’s near term outlook, the report warns.International travel drove 2025’s growth, with passenger traffic up 6.1%, comfortably outpacing domestic growth of 1.7%. Global air cargo rose 3.3%, while aircraft movements increased 2.0%. Africa led with a 9.0% rise in traffic, followed by the Middle East at 6.5%, Asia Pacific at 5.1%, and Latin America and the Caribbean at 4.5%. Europe posted 4.2%. North America was the exception, with traffic dipping 0.7% amid softer domestic demand.The opening months of 2026 have told a more complicated story. Global passenger traffic reached approximately 4.7bn in the first half, up just 0.6% on the same period last year, a marked slowdown from 2025’s pace. Growth persisted across Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia Pacific, while North America remained largely flat. The Middle East saw the sharpest decline, with traffic down 21% as the region bore the impact of escalating crisis and airspace disruption.For all the near term volatility, the report’s underlying message is one of confidence. Long run drivers of aviation demand – rising populations, growing incomes, expanding connectivity and an enduring appetite for mobility – remain firmly intact.

By Naoto HisajimaJapan’s ambassador to QatarAs ambassador of Japan to the State of Qatar, I commend His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for his timely and compelling address to the current session of the United Nations General Assembly. His Highness’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy, respect for sovereignty and the rights of peoples, and fair solutions grounded in international law resonates deeply with Japan’s enduring commitment to a rules-based international order. We also recall with profound respect the recent tribute paid at the United Nations to the distinguished legacy and service of His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.Japan shares Qatar’s conviction that durable peace rests on the Charter of the United Nations and the peaceful settlement of disputes. We also underscore the imperative of safeguarding freedom of navigation and maritime security, including in and around the Strait of Hormuz.On the question of Palestine, Japan is gravely concerned by the catastrophic humanitarian situation. Ultimately, a just and lasting peace requires a two-state solution, consistent with relevant UN resolutions and international law.Japan values its longstanding friendship with the State of Qatar and recognises Qatar’s vital contributions to mediation, humanitarian action, development, and partnership with the United Nations. We will continue to uphold and promote a free and open international order based on the rule of law, including the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and freedom of navigation. Japan remains committed to working closely with the Qatari leadership and the international community to support peaceful solutions, uphold international norms, and foster an environment where dialogue prevails over violence.

World champs India take on Japan in first bilateral T20I

A historic, landmark fixture unfolds on Tuesday, September 22, as world champions India take on Japan in a one-off T20 International. While the host region for the broader Asian Games is Aichi-Nagoya, this historic encounter takes place at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi, serving as a landmark celebration of 75 years of India-Japan diplomatic relations. It's David vs. Goliath on Japanese soilOn paper, it is a mismatch of massive proportions. India enters as the reigning T20 World Cup champions, whereas Japan, ranked 41st globally, is stepping onto the field against a Full Member nation for the very first time. However, for Japanese cricket - a sport steadily carving out space in a baseball-dominated culture - hosting the world’s biggest cricketing powerhouse is a watershed milestone. Led by stylish batsman Shreyas Iyer, India is using this match as a vital tune-up before their Asian Games campaign. With explosive firepower in Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shivam Dube, alongside a lethal bowling attack featuring Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah, the Men in Blue have all bases covered. All eyes will also be on 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi if he gets a run in the XI. Japan’s ambitionCaptain Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming leads a spirited, mostly home-grown Japanese side. Supported by all-rounder Ibrahim Takahashi and opening partner Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake, Japan isn't just looking to make up the numbers; they aim to showcase their growth on the global stage. Wataru Miyauchi, who has played 36 T20Is for Japan, said on Monday: "It is crucial for us to gauge the level of the Japanese team by seeing how well we can compete against such a top-tier opponent." Japan's Makoto Taniyama said on Monday: "It showed us the level that these top players are at and held up a mirror for us to realise the work we still have to do. We do not have players of that level in domestic cricket for the rest of the year, so the JPL (Japanese Premier League) is something I really look forward to. The chance to ask these players questions and see their mindset up close during a game is amazing." Despite a rain threat hovering over Tochigi due to a passing typhoon, Tuesday promises a historic spectacle that bridges two distinct cricketing worlds.

Mandhana breaks record as India romp into Asian Games cricket final

Smriti Mandhana became the highest run-scorer in women's T20 international cricket on Sunday as India crushed Bangladesh by 114 runs in the Asian Games semi-finals with fellow opener Shafali Verma hitting her maiden hundred. Mandhana scored 37 off 19 balls with five fours and two sixes in her side's 195-4 in 20 overs at the Korogi Athletic Park ground in Nagoya.In the process she went past New Zealand all-rounder Suzie Bates's 4,758 runs at the top of the all-time list to stand on 4,788 runs from 171 innings. Verma was the star on the day for India, scoring 100 not out off 49 balls with three fours and nine sixes -- her maiden T20 international century.Verma reached her hundred off the final ball of the 20 overs, and was clearly emotional as she took off her helmet and raised her bat in celebration towards her applauding teammates on the boundary. India then skittled Bangladesh for 81 in 15.4 overs.India will meet Sri Lanka in Tuesday's final after they earlier chased down Pakistan's 177-4 with more than two overs to spare. Sri Lanka raced to 178-2 off 17.5 overs largely thanks to captain Chamari Athapaththu's sparkling unbeaten 83 off 50 balls, laced with six sixes and seven fours.Pakistan will play Bangladesh for the bronze medal, also on Tuesday.

Inglis and Ellis shine to steer Australia to one wicket win over Zimbabwe

Josh Inglis scored his second One-Day International century and Nathan Ellis his highest score in the format with an unbeaten 36 from 44 balls as Australia claimed a dramatic one-wicket victory over hosts Zimbabwe with a ball to spare in Harare on Sunday.When Ellis was joined at the crease by number 11 Spencer Johnson (7 from 13 balls), the tourists needed 27 runs to reach their victory target of 272, something the pair managed at a run-a-ball to take their side to the win.Zimbabwe will rue Wessly Madhevere dropping Ellis in the penultimate over when he could have sealed victory for them, as he then failed to defend nine runs in the final over when Ellis hit a six off the first ball.Australia, who rested several of their regulars for the tour, claimed the series 3-0 and now move on to South Africa for three ODI fixtures that begin in Durban on Thursday."Great game of cricket," Australia captain Mitchell Marsh said. "I thought Zimbabwe probably deserved to win but the boys got the job done at the end there and that was fantastic to see."We're aware we need to keep improving as a team. I thought the way we played over the three matches, albeit today we got lucky, but there's lots of positive signs with our group. We've got some young talent which is exciting for the future." HOME SIDE ELECTED TO BAT FIRSTAfter the home side elected to bat first, Zimbabwe’s innings was anchored by an unbeaten 81 from 72 balls by captain Sikandar Raza, to go with half-centuries for Craig Ervine (59 from 79 balls) and Innocent Kaia (55 from 66 balls).Kaia retired hurt with a hamstring injury, with the score on 148 for three, as he could no longer run between the wickets.Seamer Ellis was also the pick of the Australian bowlers with 3-50 in his 10 overs.Australia were always up with the run rate in their reply but when openers Travis Head (6) and Marsh (8) fell early, it set the tone for an innings where they lost wickets at regular intervals.But Inglis scored a superb 103 from 102 balls as he struck 11 fours, with the next highest scorer Ellis on his unbeaten 36.Zimbabwe all-rounder Brad Evans was the pick of the home bowlers with 4-47 in 10 overs."I thought 280-290 was par with the bat so to make a game out of 272 was a great effort," Raza said. "As a captain I'm really proud. Plenty to learn. I'd rather have a game like that than for the Aussies to just chase it down in 40 overs." BRIEF SCORESAustralia 272 for 9 (Inglis 103, Evans 4-47) beat Zimbabwe 271 for 8 (Raza 81*, Ervine 59, Kaia 55 ret hurt, Ellis 3-50) by one wicket
