Donna Vekic won her first title in three years as the Croatian beat former US Open champion Emma Raducanu 6-0, 7-6 (8/6) in the Queen's Club final on Sunday. Vekic took the first set in dominant fashion before holding her nerve in a tense second set tie-break. The fifth title of Vekic's career was a long-awaited triumph for the world number 76, who got her hands on a trophy for the first time since the 2023 Monterrey Open. The 29-year-old was only able to compete in the grass-court event in west London as a 'lucky loser' after Marta Kostyuk pulled out injured on the eve of the tournament. Struggling with illness, Vekic had lost to Anna Blinkova in Queen's qualifying but Kostyuk's exit allowed her to make the most of an unexpected second chance. The 29-year-old has pedigree on grass after reaching the 2024 Wimbledon semi-finals and winning the Nottingham Open in 2017. Playing in her first final since the Paris Olympics two years ago, when she lost the gold medal match to Zheng Qinwen, Vekic had to dig deep to subdue British number one Raducanu in a rollercoaster second set.The Croatian trailed 5-2 and wasted four match-points before finally delivering the knockout blow. It was another final disappointment for Raducanu in 2026 after she lost to Sorana Cirstea in the Transylvania Open showpiece in February. Raducanu was hoping to win her first title since her stunning US Open victory as a teenage qualifier in 2021.The 23-year-old's bid for the second trophy of her career fell at the final hurdle. But Raducanu has been revitalised since rehiring Andrew Richardson, who coached her to that historic title in New York five year ago. The world number 42 had been hampered by fitness issues for several years and arrived at Queen's with only one win in her previous seven matches after battling a viral illness.Raducanu will head to Wimbledon, which starts on June 29, with renewed belief. Vekic refused to let Raducanu settle in a blistering start. The Croatian broke in the second game of the match to seize control. Rattling Raducanu with a barrage of searing ground-strokes, Vekic quickly broke again, capitalising on a double-fault from the Briton to take a 4-0 lead. Vekic showed no mercy, blasting her way through a 29-minute set without dropping a game. Frustration mounted as Raducanu implored her coach to "say something" after Vekic's powerful serve dictated the first game of the second set. But Vekic's level suddenly dipped and Raducanu finally got on the scoreboard in the second game. Raducanu scented an opportunity, pressuring Vekic into dropping her serve for the first time and racing into a 5-2 lead. However, the Briton squandered two set points as Vekic drew level at 5-5. Raducanu saved three match points to force a tie-break and staved off another in the breaker.But Vekic would not be denied and she was finally able to celebrate after Raducanu sent a forehand long.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) is preparing to launch the third edition of its Summer Environmental Club Program, themed "Guardians of the Environment," running from June 21 to July 2. This initiative is part of the Ministry's efforts to instill a culture of sustainability in young people and raise their awareness of environmental issues.The club targets students aged 11 to 17 through programs that combine theoretical knowledge with practical application. It is one of the Ministry's awareness initiatives aimed at preparing a generation more connected to environmental issues.In this context, Director of the Public Relations and Communications Department at the Ministry, Dr. Farhoud Hadi Al Hajri, confirmed in a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the third edition of the club has reached its full capacity of 20 students.He also noted that the early registration reflects the ministry's success in reaching its target audience and demonstrates the growing public awareness of the importance of programs that combine knowledge with the development of positive behavior among young people.Dr. Al Hajri said that the summer environmental club represents one of the qualitative initiatives that reflects the role of corporate communication in supporting environmental work, by transforming awareness messages into practical programs close to the community, noting that environmental awareness is no longer limited to media publication, but has become dependent on building interactive experiences that contribute to enhancing environmental responsibility among various groups, especially the youth.He added that the ministry has prepared a comprehensive program combining specialized workshops, interactive activities, and field visits, allowing participants to learn about environmental work in a simplified manner and understand the ministry's role in protecting the environment and preserving natural resources in the State of Qatar.Dr. Al Hajri noted that this year's edition builds upon the successes of the previous two editions, which contributed to establishing the club's position as a summer program that combines education, awareness, and entertainment, bringing students closer to environmental issues through practical and interactive methods.He stated that the program includes specialized workshops on environmental impact assessment for projects, mobile environmental photography, environmental monitoring, the safe use of radiation, and hazardous waste tracking, in addition to topics related to technology and environmental protection. It also features field visits to learn about environmental monitoring and analysis applications and air quality monitoring.He emphasized that the club aims to build an early relationship between young people and the environment by translating environmental concepts into daily practices and instilling in them that environmental protection is a shared responsibility based on behavior and commitment alongside knowledge. He expressed his confidence that the participants will become ambassadors of environmental awareness within their families, schools, and communities.Director of the Public Relations and Communications Department at the Ministry Dr. Farhoud Hadi Al Hajri concluded his statement to QNA by saying that the Summer Environmental Club is one of the important initiatives implemented by the Ministry to instill a culture of sustainability in young people. The ministry looks forward to the third edition having a tangible impact on raising students’ awareness and encouraging them to actively contribute to protecting the Qatari environment and preserving its resources for future generations. 

Clubs whose players go to the World Cup, or appeared in qualifying, will receive increased compensation this summer, FIFA, the governing body of world football, announced on Friday.FIFA said it had increased the amount of money in its Club Benefits Programme to $355 million (306m euros). It had already announced last September that it planned this increase of 70 percent from the amount distributed for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.While FIFA does not give total revenue figures for the World Cup, it estimates that its total revenue this year will be 56 percent up on 2022, and for the four years to 2026, a period which includes an enlarged Club World Cup in 2025, it will have taken in 72 per cent more than in the previous cycle.On the other hand, this World Cup is bigger. The field is increased from 36 teams to 48, the number of matches will rise from 64 to 104 and the competition will stretch over 39 days, against 29 last time.Furthermore, clubs will be compensated for appearances in World Cup qualifying for the first time.The total fund is divided into three parts.A total of $250 million is reserved for compensation for players at the finals. FIFA calculated that the minimum payment per player will be $5,000 per day spent at the World Cup, "although the final figures will be confirmed after the conclusion of the tournament".These payments, FIFA said, "will be calculated on a per-player, per-day basis, taking into account both squad inclusion and the duration of each player's involvement".Another $100 million is earmarked for qualifiers.FIFA calculates it will pay $2,362 for each player in a match-day squad for the 905 qualifying games and for 10 friendlies for each of the three host nations, which did not need to qualify.The remaining $5 million will pay administrative costs with any balance "allocated to the benefit of global club football"."This is another benefit from the expanded FIFA World Cup - providing more support across the entire football ecosystem to the clubs that provide all the players who compete to shine on the global stage," said FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the press release explaining the programme.The payments are based on a player's club registration when squads are announced but there are provisions for players who switch clubs during the tournament and for replacement players.

The Qatar Scientific Club (QSC) honoured winners of the 9th Scientific Exhibition for Innovation and Research, organised in co-operation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE). The exhibition featured 61 projects and scientific studies that advanced to the final round from nearly 290 submissions that underwent multiple stages of evaluation and judging, as part of the club’s efforts to promote a culture of scientific research and innovation among students and support the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. The exhibition drew broad participation from students across different educational levels. The first day was dedicated to presenting research projects from the “Researcher” competition for primary and preparatory students, while the second day featured projects from the “Researcher” and “Innovation” competitions for secondary school students. Representatives from the MoEHE and the Ministry of Sports and Youth attended the event, along with school administrators, supervisors and participating students. At the conclusion of the exhibition, officials from the QSC and MoEHE honoured winning students and gold medal recipients. In the school innovation competition, first place went to the project “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for User Behaviour Analysis in Cybersecurity” from the Qatar Science and Technology Secondary School for Boys. The project “NeuroStride”, which focused on the early detection of Parkinson’s disease using artificial intelligence (AI), took second place, while a project designing an integrated robotic system equipped with an automatic soil-feeding mechanism from Qatar school for girls placed third. In the “Researcher” competition for the secondary level, first place was awarded to the study “Automated Irrigation System Using Open-Source Technology” from the Qatar Science and Technology Secondary School for Boys. A study on detecting myopia using neural networks placed second, while a project designing a technological system to reduce impulsive behaviour among people with autism placed third. At the preparatory level, the research project “Rafi”, designed to support communication for children with Down syndrome using technology and AI, won first place. A project converting sign language into written and spoken language using AI placed second, while a project on safe vehicle speed control and emergency health alerts placed third.At the primary school level, first place went to a project designing a sustainable smart home integrating renewable energy, AI and smart agriculture. A project producing bioplastic from bananas took second place, while the “Drink Link” smart project placed third. In a statement issued yesterday, QSC deputy executive director Abdulrahman Saleh Khamis said that the school innovation competition aims to foster a culture of innovation and encourage students to transform theirideas into models and projects that can be developed and applied. He said the initiative contributes to preparing a generation capable of supporting the knowledge economy and advancing the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. Khamis also praised the advanced level of the participating projects and the ongoing co-operation with the MoEHE and the Ministry of Sports and Youth.QSC Administrative and Financial Affairs director Fatima al-Muhannadi said that the “Researcher” competition is being held for the ninth consecutive year since its launch in 2017. She said the two competitions have become an important scientific platform for developing students’ research and innovation skills by combining scientific methodology with practical applications and modern technologies. – QNA

Sheikh Saud bin Khalid bin Hamad al-Thani yesterday was the guest of honour as Lusail Club hosted a special ceremony to celebrate the team’s historic promotion to the Qatar Stars League (QSL) for next season.The event brought together the club’s management, technical and administrative staff, players, supporters, fans, and a host of prominent sports figures and officials, all of whom gathered to congratulate the club and share in the joy of this landmark achievement.“Promotion to the Qatar Stars League represents an important step forward in implementing the club’s 2026–2030 strategy, which is focused on building a professional and sustainable sports institution built on talent development and long-term growth,” said Lusail Club president Nawaf Mohammed al-Mudahka.Al-Mudahka said the next phase will focus on strengthening the first team’s readiness and raising its competitive level ahead of the new Stars League campaign.“The club remains committed to continuing the development of youth programs and talent pathways aimed at producing players capable of supporting both the first team and the national teams,” al-Mudahka said.In conclusion, the club president expressed his appreciation to all club members, supporters, and partner organisations for their continued backing, emphasizing that promotion is only the beginning of a new chapter dedicated to establishing Lusail Club among the elite of Qatari football and achieving its future ambitions.Lusail secured the promotion after defeating Al Markhiya 2-0 on April 25 at Hamad Bin Khalifa Stadium in Round 13 of Second Division League. Lusail were crowned 2025-2026 season Second Division champions with one round remaining, having collected 29 points. The result of their final match in the league will officially confirm their triumph. Lusail’s goals were scored by Amin Alireza and Amir Roustaei in the 19th and 48th minute respectively.Speaking on the occasion, club’s Portuguese coach Emanuel Alfante expressed 'immense happiness' over the team’s promotion.“We are immensely happy to secure qualification to the Qatar Stars League. This achievement represents a historic milestone in Lusail Club’s journey and marks the club’s first-ever promotion since its establishment,” said Alfante.Alfante said the success was the result of continuous hard work and collective efforts from everyone at the club. He praised the players’ discipline, commitment, and fighting spirit throughout the season, while also highlighting the important role played by the technical and administrative staff, as well as the unwavering support of the club’s management.“The team maintained confidence in its ability to secure promotion despite the intense competition and numerous challenges throughout the campaign. The players’ strong mentality and determination proved decisive in the season’s most important matches,” said Alfante.Alfante further stressed that competing in the top flight will require even greater preparation and commitment. He confirmed that work will continue to ensure performances worthy of Lusail Club’s ambitions, while efforts will also be made to strengthen the squad in line with the demands of the upcoming season.
