On a charged Ramadan night of fierce competition and edge-of-your-seat finales, the fourth and penultimate round of the 2025-2026 Qatar Drag Race Championship roared to a close at the Qatar Racing Club speed track. The round spanned three days: qualifying on the first two days and final eliminations on Friday, ending with the crowning of the top three winners in all eight categories.The event is held under the patronage of QRC Chairman His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al-Thani. In the INDEX 10.00 category, the final race featured a showdown between Abdulaziz al-Hail and Ahmed Hassan. Hassan had previously claimed the titles of the opening two rounds and was aiming for a third this season. Meanwhile, al-Hail was making his first appearance in a final race; however, that did not prevent him from capturing his maiden championship title, leaving Hassan in second place. The INDEX 9.00 category witnessed a completely new podium lineup this round, as Rameeh al-Rumaih secured his first title of the season with Bader al-Foudri finishing second. In the INDEX 8.50 (Cars) category, Hamdan al-Kaabi celebrated his second consecutive victory, earning his second title of the season. This time, he triumphed over Hamad al-Ajmi in the final. Over the eighth mile, the three car categories delivered fierce battles. In INDEX 4.80, Mohammed al-Furaih reached his third straight final and claimed his first title, defeating Rashid al-Juhani, while round two winner Saeed al-Balushi finished third. Al-Balushi returned to the podium once again - this time from the top step - after winning the INDEX 4.50 category title, marking his second triumph in this class. He secured victory over his brother Rashid, who faced him in the final race. Rashid, in turn, finished second for the second consecutive round, while Ibrahim Abbas Ibrahim, champion of the previous two rounds, claimed third place. Rashid al-Balushi made up for his earlier final defeat to his brother by winning the Super Street category final against Mohammed Ali Mohammed. This victory marked his third title in the category, following his wins in the first and second rounds. Al-Ansari claims two bike titles The INDEX 8.50 Bike class drew the round’s largest field, with 30 riders battling through eliminations. In the final, Abdullah al-Ansari - winner of the opening two rounds - defeated Shihab Bourbaa once again to claim his third title of the season. Bourbaa took second, while Mohammed Ali finished third. Al-Ansari then doubled his success in the Street Bike category, winning the final against Ghanem al-Dhaheri. Abdulwahab Bouqmaz secured third place, marking his second podium finish of the season. QRC General Manager Sheikh Jabor bin Khalid al-Thani crowned the top three winners in each category. 

The 2nd Ramadan Blitz Chess Championship concluded at the headquarters of the Friends of the Environment Centre, with Azerbaijani player Asadli Vugar claiming the title. He bagged the title after finishing with nine points, followed by Filipino player Loyola Rolletson Jr with eight points. Indian player Akshith Saravanan finished third with seven points. Organised by the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) and the Doha Youth Centre, the internationally rated tournament brought together 70 male and female players. The event aims to promote chess in Qatar and provide a strong competitive platform for players during the holy month of Ramadan. The championship witnessed strong participation from internationally rated players. The competition was conducted under the Swiss system over nine rounds, with a time control of three minutes per player plus a two-second increment per move. FIDE laws were applied, with strict enforcement of a “zero tolerance” policy regarding electronic devices to ensure the integrity of the competition. Among Qatari players, Ryan Mohammed Fardous was crowned Best Qatari Player, while Layan al-Qassabi was named Best Qatari Female Player. The event was held as part of joint efforts between the Doha Youth Centre and the QCA to promote the game and raise the standard of players in the country. QCA executive director Hamad al-Tamimi expressed his satisfaction with the distinguished atmosphere of this edition and the level of participation across various age groups, including members of the Qatari national teams. He stressed that the QCA is keen to build partnerships with various entities and institutions in the country and to organise a number of tournaments to spread chess culture within the community. 

The Ministry of Municipality Ramadan Football Championship 2026 kicked off on Sunday at Al Sadd Club’s Stadiums, with the participation of teams representing various sectors of the ministry and municipalities, in a competitive atmosphere that reflects the spirit of co-operation among employees.The tournament will continue until early March. The opening matches saw the Agricultural Affairs and Food Security Sector team defeat the Doha Municipality team with a score of (6-1). Meanwhile, the Al Khor Municipality team secured a win against the Al Rayyan Municipality team with a score of (5-3), marking a strong start to the tournament, which will proceed according to the approved schedule leading up to the final match. 

The Katara International Ramadan Open Classical Chess Championship is set to begin today at Building 15, bringing together 86 male and female players from various age groups.The tournament is organised by the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) and will continue until March 1.The first round of the nine-round classical chess competition, played under the Swiss system (45 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move), will feature several players ranked on the International Chess Federation (FIDE) list.QCA president Mohammed al-Mudahka expressed his pleasure at the continuation of the championship, describing it as one of the most prominent events on the federation’s annual calendar.In a statement to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), he noted that the organising committee has completed all preparations for the start of the competition.He highlighted the tournament's importance in providing participants with valuable experience, particularly given the large number of rated players competing in the international event.Al-Mudahka thanked Katara Cultural Village for its efforts in ensuring the continuity of the tournament.He emphasised the federation’s commitment to such partnerships and its keenness to institutionalise these championships within the annual calendar to further develop the skills of national team players and strengthen their presence in upcoming competitions.The total prize fund amounts to QR25,000, with QR5,000 awarded to the first-place winner.Prizes will also be given to the top 10 finishers, as well as special awards for the best Qatari players across several age categories, in addition to prizes designated for players from the Qatar Chess Association Training Centre.The Katara Classical Chess Championship is considered one of the federation’s most prominent annual events.It is held each year during the Holy Month of Ramadan and has provided significant support to national teams across all age categories.

George Russell believes he has been handed a car ready to win the world championship as Mercedes head into a new era for Formula One as the title favourites. Under the leadership of Toto Wolff, Mercedes won eight consecutive constructors’ championships and seven drivers’ titles between 2014 and 2021. Since Russell joined in 2022 they have struggled to keep pace with Red Bull and McLaren. However, a major upheaval of the sport’s technical rulebook for the new season means a fresh start for all the teams on the grid. Mercedes caught the eye in last week’s first test at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya by boasting both impressive speed and reliability, with the bookmakers making Russell favourite for his first world title. “I feel ready to fight for a world championship, and whether we have that tag as favourites above us or not, it doesn’t change my approach one single bit,” said the British driver at Mercedes’ digital launch Monday. “There are a lot of things we need to learn very quickly, but I feel I can take advantage of that and I feel confident in myself and in the team.” Four-time world champion Max Verstappen will lead Red Bull’s challenge, aiming to regain the title after losing out to Lando Norris last season. Russell and Verstappen have clashed on and off the track in recent years and the former is relishing the prospect of a title battle to add to the feud between the pair. “I would love that. He is very much going to be in the fight this year,” added Russell. “You obviously wish you had a slightly easier time of it, but it should never be easy, and if you are going to win, you want to have fought for it and won it fair and square on track. “The best-case scenario is if you have a number of teams battling it out, and at the moment it does look like Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and ourselves are the four teams that are quite close,” Russell said. Wolff is relieved to have what appears a competitive car at the front of the grid after four seasons of disappointment, but is not getting carried away despite a positive first test session. “It is always nice if your driver is the favourite with the bookmakers, and he (Russell) deserves it because he is one of the best,” said the Austrian. “But it is always the best driver and the best car that wins, and we have not proven yet that we have a package that is good enough.” There will be two three-day tests in Bahrain later this month before the season begins in Australia on March 8. 

Amid an incredible attendance of spectators marked by epic success, the curtain fell on the 8th Katara Boxing Championship in Doha on Saturday. The three-day competition, organized by the Qatar Boxing and Wrestling Federation (QBWF), was held in both the amateur and professional categories. The amateur bouts took place over the first two days, featuring around 65 boxers across the three age groups (open, youth, and juniors), representing 15 clubs from Qatar and a team from Lebanon, competing across 10 weight divisions.**media[411819]**As for the professional category bouts, which took place in the evening on the final day of the championship, they showcased six intense matches on both the technical and tactical levels, with world champions competing for 5 Asian and World titles under the WBC, as well as the Diamond Belt. In the first match, Russian Kerim Khan Kerimkhanov claimed victory on points over Lebanese Abdulwahab Mashareqi after a balanced contest between the two sides. In the second match, another Russian, Ruslan Satiev, secured a quick win by defeating his Azerbaijani opponent, Bairam Shammadov, in the second round by knockout. The third bout, featuring Philippine boxer Jadalie Carolina Medeiros and her Iranian opponent, Shirin Shabani, was fierce and lasted eight rounds, before Medeiros claimed victory on points.**media[411820]**In the fourth match, Algerian Idriss Labidi won decisively over his Indonesian opponent, Rivo Rengkung, finishing the bout in the second round by knockout. In the fifth bout, Iranian Sajad Sattari defeated his Thai opponent, Kaonar, in the second round by knockout. Finally, in the sixth and concluding bout, Russian Ali Aliev triumphed on points over American Chip Moraza-Pollard after a strong contest from both fighters. Speaking to Qatar News Agency, HE President of QBWF Sheikh Fahad bin Khalid Al-Thani said that throughout the three-day saga, the event featured participation from all age categories -Prep, Junior, Youth, and Elite/Professional -with the first and second days dedicated to amateur competitions in the men’s, youth, and junior divisions, featuring 15 clubs from Qatar and a team from Lebanon, competing across 10 weight divisions for 26 gold medals. The final day was reserved for professional bouts in various combat sports, featuring world-ranked fighters competing for 4 Asian and World WBC titles, as well as the Diamond Belt, Sheikh Fahad highlighted. He added that the event is one of the key tournaments in QBWF's calendar, affirming that the federation is committed to holding it annually to discover new boxing talent for the different age-group national teams, while also giving clubs and centers across the nation the opportunity to participate, gain experience, and develop their competitive level. This was a record-breaking participation and stronger than previous editions, with the number of participants increasing to encompass multiple clubs and academies in the nation, as well as Lebanon's team, Sheikh Fahad noted. Sheikh Fahad emphasized that QBWF's plan is based on organizing a substantial number of events to promote the level of boxers and their talent. He stressed that QBWF's strategy underpins the development of all elements -boxers, trainers, clubs, academies, and special centers -with the objective of enlarging the base and attracting younger people and emerging talent to represent Qatar on all stages. 

The Organising Committee of the Al Thumama Ramadan Football Tournament has officially announced the details of the third edition of the championship, reaffirming its position as a flagship community football event for young players in Qatar.The announcement was made during a press conference held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, where officials outlined the tournament’s objectives, format, and growing popularity.In cooperation with the Qatar Sports for All Federation, the tournament will take place at Al Furjan Stadium in the Al Thumama area, coinciding with the start of the holy month of Ramadan. The championship is dedicated exclusively to age groups from 10 to 14 years old, covering players born between 2012 and 2016, making it the only tournament of its kind in Qatar for this specific age category. Registration for participating teams has officially opened and will continue until February 10 through the Qatar Sports for All Federation application.The tournament offers a competitive and rewarding platform, with the first-place team set to receive a cash prize of QR7000, along with the championship trophy and gold medals. The second-place team will earn QR5000 and silver medals, while the third-place team will receive QR3000 and bronze medals. Individual excellence will also be recognized, with the best player awarded QR500, and the top scorer and best goalkeeper each receiving the same amount. In addition, the best ideal team will be awarded a financial prize of QR2000.Head of the Organising Committee, Member of the Municipal Council Hassan Al Ishaq, emphasised the tournament’s unique status and increasing demand. He noted that despite players’ academic commitments, there is a strong and growing eagerness among teams to participate. Al Ishaq revealed that requests to take part in this year’s edition have increased, including a proposal to stage the tournament more than once annually, which is currently under consideration. He also confirmed that a team from one of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries has expressed interest in participating, with the request presently under review. Building on the tournament’s inclusive spirit, he added that a team from Gaza, which participated in the previous edition, is expected to return for the second consecutive year.Executive Director of the Qatar Sports for All Federation Abdullah al-Dosari highlighted that the Al Thumama Ramadan Football Tournament represents a distinguished launch for the 2026 neighbourhood championships. He stressed that the event reflects a sustained commitment to organizing community sports initiatives that serve various segments of society, particularly youth aged between 10 and 14. Al-Dosari described the tournament as a successful model for investing in neighbourhood sports facilities to promote an active lifestyle, encourage fair competition, strengthen social interaction, and discover emerging talents, especially during the spiritually significant month of Ramadan.

Qatar won the gold medal in the mixed team trap event on the final day of the Asian Shotgun Championship at the Lusail Shooting Complex. The Qatari duo of Mohammed al-Rumaihi and Kholoud al-Khalaf finished first after a strong contest against teams from Kuwait and Chinese Taipei. They hit 30 of 40 targets, setting a new Asian and world record. Kuwait’s team of Talal al-Rashidi and Sarah al-Hawal claimed the silver medal with 20 of 40 targets, while the Chinese Taipei pair of Kai Pang-chan and Lin Yu-chen secured bronze after finishing third with 19 of 40 targets. With this result, Qatar concluded the championship with a total of eight medals, including four gold and four silver. Six medals came in skeet events, while two were won in trap. 

Qatar opened their campaign in the main round of the Asian Handball Championship with a 32-25 win over Saudi Arabia Thursday. Ahmad Madadi led the scoring for Qatar with eight goals, followed by Frankis Marzo with six, while Rafael Capote and Nasreddine Megdich added four goals each. Qatar will take on Bahrain Friday, before meeting United Arab Emirates Saturday in search of a place in the semi-finals. The tournament, currently being held in Sabah Al-Salem, Kuwait, also serves as a qualifier for the World Men’s Handball Championship.
