Captain Mohamed Salah scored after 124 minutes to clinch a 3-1 extra-time victory for Egypt over plucky minnows Benin in an Africa Cup of Nations last-16 thriller in Agadir Monday. Marwan Attia put the Pharaohs ahead in the second half and Jodel Dossou equalised for the Cheetahs, taking the match to an additional 30 minutes in the southern Moroccan coastal city. Yasser Ibrahim headed Egypt back in front in the first half of extra time, then Salah broke clear and beat goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou with a shot from outside the area for his 10th AFCON goal. Salah, whose goals have helped Liverpool win many trophies, is seeking a first AFCON winners’medal, having twice been a runner-up. Record seven-time champions Egypt stay in Agadir to face title-holders Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso on Saturday in the quarter-finals. Egypt changed 10 of the team that drew with Angola in their final group match seven days ago with only midfielder Ibrahim Adel retained. Many AFCON teams assured of qualification for the knockout stage with a match to spare followed the example of Egypt and fielded sides composed largely of reserves. Benin lacked captain and former Premier League striker Steve Mounie, who had not recovered from an undisclosed illness. Egypt had a great chance to go in front after only eight minutes through Omar Marmoush, the 26-year-old who joined Manchester City at the beginning of last year from Eintracht Frankfurt. He darted forward from the Egyptian half, gained possession and stayed ahead of two pursuing defenders only to be foiled by Dandjinou, who blocked the ball with his legs, then grasped it. When Egypt threatened again soon after, centre-back Yohan Roche rescued Benin, clearing the ball as it was trickling toward the net. A collision between Mohamed Hamdy and Rodolfo Aloko led to a long delay, which ended with the Egyptian being carried off the field. Ahmed Aboul-Fetouh took his place in midfield. While Egypt had more possession in the opening half, Benin held their own and it took a superb sliding tackle from Hamdy Fathy to halt a Benin counterattack. An incident deep in added time illustrated how wary Benin were of Salah. When the captain gained possession just outside the box, he was immediately surrounded by three opponents. Dandjinou rescued Benin 10 minutes into the second half when he bravely parried a close-range shot from Ramy Rabia after the ball ran loose to the defender following a corner. As the match passed the hour mark, it began to open up. A Salah attempt to chip the ball into the net was foiled by leaping Dandjinou. Then, a parry from 37-year-old Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy prevented substitute Dossou giving Benin a shock lead. Attia ended the goalless stalemate when Marmoush pushed the ball back to the midfielder and, from just outside the box, he side-footed it into the roof of the net. Benin refused to accept defeat, though, attacked constantly and levelled on 83 minutes through 33-year-old Dossou. El Shenawy did superbly to palm a Mohamed Tijani cross away from his goal, but the ball fell invitingly for Dossou, and he pushed it into the net. Egypt regained the lead seven minutes into extra time, and this time Attia was the creator. He crossed after a short corner and a looping Ibrahim header evaded Dandjinou and landed in the net. Salah then put the outcome beyond doubt with his third goal of the tournament. 

Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz maintained his goal-a-game record at the Africa Cup of Nations by scoring to take Morocco into the quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Tanzania in Rabat Sunday.Diaz scored once in each of three group matches and his 64th-minute strike against the Tanzanians created history as he became the first Moroccan to find the net in four consecutive AFCON matches.The goal came after Morocco squandered numerous scoring chances while stretching an unbeaten run in competitive and friendly matches to 23. Their last loss was to South Africa at the 2024 AFCON.Morocco will face South Africa or Cameroon, who meet later on Sunday at a different Rabat venue, in the quarter-finals on Friday.Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi, set up the last-16 winner for Diaz, while making his first start in the tournament after coming off the bench in a victory over Zambia last Monday.The 2025 African player of the year suffered a serious ankle injury playing for PSG against Bayern Munich in the Champions League two months ago.But Morocco lacked Azzedine Ounahi, who arrived at the stadium using crutches and wearing a medical boot on his left foot. Bilal El Khannouss took his place in midfield.Morocco were favourites for several reasons, including home advantage, the backing of close to 70,000 supporters, and lying 101 places above Tanzania in the world rankings.First chanceHowever, it was Tanzania who had the first chance in the third minute, but Saimon Msuva misconnected with a Selemani Mwalimu cross.Morocco had the ball in the net after 15 minutes as Ismael Saibari nodded a Abdessamad Ezzalzouli free-kick past goalkeeper Hussein Masaranga.The assistant referee immediately raised his flag for offside and a VAR review confirmed that the PSV striker had strayed too far forward.Ayoub El Kaabi was the next Moroccan to come close, heading over before being injured in a collision with Masaranga. Both players resumed after treatment.A Diaz shot was too high from the edge of the box and El Kaabi headed wide as the host nation continued their pursuit of the opening goal, but the first half ended goalless.In a lively start to the second period, Ezzalzouli and El Kaabi headed wide then, in a rare Tanzanian raid, Feisal 'Fei Toto' Salum fired over with only goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to beat.As Moroccan pressure mounted, Hakimi rifled a free-kick against the crossbar from just outside the box on the hour mark.A goal seemed inevitable given the relentless pressure from the host nation, and it came thanks to Hakimi and Diaz.The full-back passed to the forward, who beat Masaranga at his near post with an angled shot from close range. 

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae has backed the decision to play the Africa Cup of Nations every four years instead of two, saying that the change could benefit the development of football on the continent.“It can be a good thing if alongside that we do what we need to do for the development of African football,” he told AFP.The Cup of Nations has almost always been held at two-year intervals since the first edition in 1957 but Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe announced the change on the eve of the ongoing tournament in Morocco.Motsepe said that the tournament would go ahead every four years after the next two editions planned for 2027 and 2028, a decision that has been heavily criticised by some on the continent who see it as bowing to pressure from leading European clubs and FIFA.He said an annual African Nations League - along the lines of the UEFA Nations League - would instead be introduced to boost the coffers of national federations.“We are lucky in Africa now to have better infrastructure, better structured teams, better players, most of whom play for the best teams in Europe,” added Fae, who led the Elephants to the AFCON title in 2024.“Holding the AFCON every four years would mean having a major tournament every two years with the World Cup too, but there needs to be another major competition in Africa like the planned Nations League.“That would allow us to have games between teams like Morocco and Senegal every year, or Ivory Coast against Tunisia and Algeria against Mali.“And I don’t think that would penalise the smaller nations because I don’t know that them losing games 5-0 or 6-0 really raises the level of African football.“If they play against other teams of their level with the aim of being promoted, I think everyone will be a winner.”Meanwhile Fae admitted retaining the AFCON crown at the ongoing edition in Morocco is a hard task for his team.Ivory Coast are already through to the last 16 before playing their final group game today against Gabon.“There are eight or nine teams with squads that can win it, and I feel like teams play differently against us because we are the reigning champions,” Fae admitted.“That makes things even harder, but we are motivated to go all the way and we are confident too.” 

Algeria will be looking to make ‌it a perfect Africa Cup of ‌Nations group phase ‍when they face Equatorial Guinea today, particularly if they keep another clean sheet as goalkeeper Luca Zidane shines in Morocco.The two-time African ‍champions started their campaign with a 3-0 win over Sudan followed by a 1-0 victory against Burkina Faso to secure top spot in Group E in which Zidane made crucial saves to keep Vladimir Petkovic’s side in the game.Algeria ‌kept one clean sheet in their previous six games at AFCON, where they were eliminated in the group stage ‍in 2021 and 2023 respectively after ‌being crowned African champions in the 2019 edition in Egypt.However, since Luca Zidane, son of French World Cup-winning great Zinedine, switched international allegiance in September after playing for France as a junior, Algeria have kept two clean sheets in three games with him in all competitions.The 27-year-old Granada goalkeeper has adapted quickly since becoming first choice, Petkovic remarked.“Zidane contributed significantly ​to both victories. ‌He began to integrate and gain experience in a short period of time,” the coach ‍said Tuesday.Despite only being with the team since October, Zidane has not been shy about instructing his new teammates, defender Rayan Ait-Nouri said.“Luca is a fantastic person. He integrated quickly into the group, ​he’s very talkative on the pitch, and he gives us great support. He’s a player and a person who fits the team perfectly,” Ait-Nouri added.Another clean sheet should not be too difficult against an Equatorial Guinea side who have been eliminated from the tournament having scored once in two games. 

Egypt rested ‌all their key players ‍but still kept up their unbeaten run at the Africa Cup of Nations, drawing 0-0 with Angola Monday to finish their Group B campaign on seven points.Egypt had already ‍confirmed top spot in the group before kickoff, allowing them the luxury of making 11 changes from their 1-0 win over South Africa on Friday, and giving players like Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush the day off. Angola finished third in the group but must wait to see whether they could advance to ‌the last 16 as one of the best four third-placed finishers. Their two-point haul means they have an anxious wait and will only advance if Comoros ‍and Zambia lose in Group A later ‌on Monday and Tanzania and Uganda are beaten in their last Group C matches on Tuesday. Angola had the better of the chances to win the game with Chico Banza’s 42nd-minute effort coming closest. He played a quick one-two with fellow forward Mabululu and held off two defenders but put his effort past the post. Mabululu had two shots on goal and captain Fredy shaved the outside of the post with a free kick early in the second half, after forcing a sharp ​save from Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa ‌Shobeir minutes before the break. Substitute Mbala Nzola had a run on goal in the 80th minute but hit the side ‍netting while a last-minute free kick from Manuel Benson went sailing over. French-based striker Mostafa Mohamed captained Egypt and set up a 20th-minute opportunity with a spectacular overhead kick from a corner that offered Hossam Abdelmaguid a chance to score from close range, but he headed ​over the crossbar. Substitute Ahmed Zizo could also have claimed the opener in the second half but was thwarted while in a good position. Egypt will stay in Agadir for their last-16 clash against one of the best third-placed finishers next Monday. South Africa, who beat Zimbabwe 3-2 in Marrakesh in the other Group B clash on Monday, ended second in the group with six points, and will play the runner-up in Group F in their last-16 tie in Rabat on Sunday. 

Algeria will begin their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 campaign on Wednesday against Sudan in Group E, as the tournament continues in Morocco.The match in Rabat will be the first official AFCON meeting between the two sides. Algeria, under pressure after group-stage exits in the last two editions, are seeking a strong start against a Sudan team returning to the tournament after missing the previous finals.Sudan face a tough group that also includes Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea, who meet in Casablanca later on Wednesday in another key Group E fixture.In Group F, Cameroon open their campaign against Gabon in Agadir, aiming for victory ahead of a tougher test against defending champions Ivory Coast. Cameroon will rely on forward Bryan Mbeumo, while Gabon look to experienced striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to lead their challenge.Ivory Coast begin the defense of their title against Mozambique, also on Wednesday. 

Zambia’s Patson Daka scored with a spectacular diving header in stoppage time to see his side come from behind and force a 1-1 draw with ‌Mali in their opening Group A clash at the Africa ‌Cup of Nations finals ‍Monday.Mali looked in control for most of the encounter but paid the price for sitting ⁠back in the closing stages ⁠as Zambia staged a late recovery, with Daka leaping through the air to ‍force home Mathews Banda’s curling cross two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game.Lassine Sinayoko had taken advantage of sloppy defending to give Mali a 62nd-minute lead after his strike partner El Bilal Toure had a first-half penalty saved.The penalty had been awarded after a VAR check as defender Banda caught the heel of Dorgeles ‌Nene as he attempted to clear the ball away from Mali’s dangerous winger. But Toure’s 42nd-minute spot kick was well saved by Zambia’s goalkeeper Willard Mwanza.Nene caused ‍Zambia’s defence no end of ⁠turmoil with his ‌jinxing runs down the left flank, while Sinayoko and El Toure also proved a difficult frontline duo to deal with and Mali looked as if they would cruise to an easy three-point haul.Sinayoko might have had the first goal of the game after 15 minutes when he stole possession away from Zambia’s defence, but his shot was saved.Penalty save hero Mwanza stood no chance with the Mali goal as first El Toure had an effort from a corner blocked before Sinayoko picked up the rebound and tried a shot ​which was again blocked, only ‌for the ball to fall onto his right foot and allow the Ligue 1 striker to blast ⁠it home from close range. ‍The Zambia defence was surprisingly all at sea as the corner floated in.Conceding the goal galvanised Zambia into a fightback and they had several close chances before Daka’s dramatic equaliser as Mali sat back and sought to absorb the pressure.Captain Fashion Sakala had an effort at the back post ​blocked with some 15 minutes left, and Dominic Chanda’s spectacular overhead effort soon after was plucked out of the air by Mali goalkeeper Djigui Diarra.Mali next meet hosts Morocco in Rabat on Friday while Zambia take on Comoros in Casablanca the same day. Morocco are at the head of the standings after the host nation opened the tournament on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in Rabat.Late last night, Group B action got underway with Angola and South Africa meeting in Marrakech followed by Egypt against Zimbabwe in Agadir.Hosts Morocco off to winning start at Africa Cup of NationsOn Sunday night, Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi scored second-half goals as hosts Morocco got their Africa Cup of Nations bid off to a winning start by beating minnows Comoros 2-0 in the tournament's opening game.Soufiane Rahimi had a penalty saved in a frustrating first half for much-fancied Morocco, but Diaz fired home from inside the area 10 minutes after the interval at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in the capital Rabat.Substitute El Kaabi then got the second with a stunning overhead kick, and the victory on a wet and cold night sets the Atlas Lions up for the potentially tougher tests to come in Group A against Mali and Zambia. The result also allowed Morocco, Africa's best team in the FIFA rankings in 11th place, to extend their world-record winning run to 19 consecutive matches. Morocco's next game will be on Friday against Mali. 

Ten people were killed in a shooting in western Johannesburg, South Africa.South African media reported that the incident occurred in a town west of Johannesburg. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals and are receiving medical treatment.Police remain at the scene and are investigating the cause of the shooting.

His Excellency Chairman of the Internal and External Affairs Committee of the Shura Council Yousef bin Ali Al Khater praised the distinguished relations and growing partnerships that bind the State of Qatar to the countries of the African continent, based on mutual respect and convergence of interests in the economic, political, labor and other fields.In a special statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), His Excellency explained, on the occasion of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani's visit to the Republic of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, that the African tour reflects His Highness’ vision of strengthening relations with countries of the continent and enhancing the presence of the State of Qatar in Africa as a reliable partner that contributes to development, peace and stability.His Excellency pointed out that Qatari-Rwandan relations have witnessed significant development over the past years, including in the fields of education, innovation and modern technologies. He stressed that the close cooperation between Doha and Kigali embodies a model of relations based on partnership and mutual interests.Regarding the Democratic Republic of Congo, HE Chairman of the Internal and External Affairs Committee of the Shura Council explained that relations between the two countries are witnessing increasing growth in light of the Qatari leadership’s interest in strengthening cooperation with African countries rich in natural resources in order to achieve sustainable development and enhance economic and humanitarian cooperation.His Excellency stressed that HH the Amir's visit to Kinshasa is of particular importance as it represents a significant step towards diversifying regional partnerships and deepening cooperation with Central Africa, noting that parliamentary cooperation between the Shura Council and African parliaments constitutes an important bridge to support bilateral relations and expand the horizons of understanding and joint action on regional and international issues.
