The Local Organising Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 officially opened Al Janoub Arena in its new configuration yesterday in front of a capacity crowd of 8,200 fans, following its transformation from a football stadium into a basketball arena. The venue will be one of four arenas hosting games at the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027. The opening coincided with celebrations marking exactly one year to go until the start of the tournament, with Al Janoub Arena hosting the game between Qatar and China in the World Cup Asian Qualifiers. The game was attended by HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs; Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee; HE Sheikh Saud Ali al-Thani, President of FIBA; Andreas Zagklis, Secretary General of FIBA and Dr. Ahmad Abdulla Al Buenain, Director General of the Local Organising Committee for the FIBA World Cup 2027.Qatar suffered a 57-83 defeat to China in a game that marked the start of their second round campaign. Qatar are competing in the qualifiers as part of their preparations for the World Cup, despite having already secured their place in the tournament as the host nation.After briefly trailing in the opening quarter, China seized control with a decisive early run and never looked back and outscoring the hosts in every period to seal a dominant road win. The momentum shifted late in the first quarter, when Mike Lewis II knocked down the first of two free throws to put Qatar ahead 12-11 after the score had been tied at 11-11. But China responded immediately and emphatically. Over the remainder of the opening quarter they unleashed a 12-1 run, holding Qatar to 0-of-5 from the field while connecting on 4-of-6 from the floor and committing no turnovers. That surge opened up a 12-23 lead and set the tone for the rest of the game. Centre Hansen Yang stole the spotlight for China, finishing with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. He shot an efficient 7-of-11 from the field, including 6-of-9 from two-point range.China’s balanced attack featured strong support from forward Jinqiu Hu, who contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds, and guard Sanning Liao, who added 11 points, 4 assists. Playmaker Mingxuan Hu chipped in 12 points and 4 assists without a turnover, providing steady leadership in the backcourt. On the other side, Mike Lewis II was Qatar’s standout performer, tallying 14 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. He shot 5-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from deep, but received little help as China’s defense clamped down.China’s biggest run came late in the third quarter and spilled into the fourth, as they outscored Qatar 0-10 over. That burst turned a 48-61 lead into a commanding 48-71 advantage, effectively putting the game to bed. Mingxuan led the charge, scoring 8 points on perfect shooting from the field and the line during the stretch. Qatar’s largest lead was 3 points, achieved early left in the first quarter at 5-2. But that was as good as it got for the hosts. China’s biggest lead reached 26 points with 39 seconds remaining at 57-83, which also stood as the final margin. After falling behind early, China took control and never allowed Qatar to threaten again. The World Cup will take place from August 27 to September 12, 2027, bringing together 32 national teams for 92 games across four venues: Lusail Arena, Al Janoub Arena, Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena and Al Duhail Arena. The evening also featured a range of entertainment and interactive activities for fans, adding to the atmosphere surrounding the opening of Al Janoub Arena and the Qatar-China game and encouraging greater engagement throughout the venue. The activities complemented the on-court action and provided fans with a broader event experience, offering an early glimpse of the atmosphere the Local OrganizingCommittee aims to deliver during the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027. First Ticket Passes LaunchedThe one-year-to-go celebrations also coincided with the launch of the first ticket passes for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, now available to fans through the tournament’s official website, marking another important step on the road to next year’s global event.The options include the Lusail Series Pass, covering all 32 games to be played at Lusail Arena; the Final Phase Pass, covering all 12 games from the quarter-Finals through to the final; and the Follow My Team Qatar Pass, which includes Qatar’s five Group Phase games – three in the first round and two in the second round. The Follow My Team Qatar Pass gives fans the opportunity to secure their seats early and support the national team throughout their World Cup campaign on home soil.  

The State of Qatar participated in the 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday.The State of Qatar was represented at the meeting by His Excellency Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi. 

The State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC), participated in the Ministerial Dialogue on the Restoration of Rangelands and the Well-Being of Pastoral Communities, held as part of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.Representing the State of Qatar at the dialogue was Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves Affairs at MOECC, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Maslamani.In his remarks, Dr. Al Maslamani highlighted the national efforts undertaken by the State to protect and rehabilitate rangelands and restore terrestrial ecosystems, along with initiatives aimed at enhancing the sustainability of land and vegetation cover.He stressed that the dialogue takes on added significance in 2026, designated the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, given the environmental significance of rangelands in preserving biodiversity, promoting soil health, and increasing the resilience of ecosystems to drought and the impacts of climate change.He pointed out that the State of Qatar has adopted an integrated approach to protecting terrestrial ecosystems and restoring degraded sites, despite the challenges associated with its arid and hyper-arid environments. He noted that protection and rehabilitation work has been carried out in 76 natural areas and sites, covering a combined area of 16.72 square kilometers, during the period from 2019 to 2026, with the aim of expanding these efforts to include 500 natural areas and sites by 2030.He also highlighted the ongoing implementation of the initiative to plant 10 million trees by 2030 as part of the State of Qatar's contribution to the Green Middle East Initiative. To date, more than 4 million trees have been planted, supporting the restoration of ecosystems and enhancing their resilience. He further noted the Ministry's efforts in employing modern technologies to serve environmental protection, where the use of geographic information systems, remote sensing, and drones has contributed to surveying and documenting 1,573 natural areas and establishing a comprehensive national spatial database that supports sustainable planning and land use.Dr. Al Maslamani added that national measures included extending the ban on camel grazing and regulating sheep and goat grazing during the growing seasons of wild plants. This contributes to reducing pressure on vegetation cover and allows ecosystems to regenerate naturally. He explained that these efforts are being implemented within the framework of Qatar's first National Strategy to Combat Desertification (2025-2030), which aims to restore and rehabilitate at least 30 percent of degraded natural habitats, promote sustainable land management, and achieve land degradation neutrality goals.During the dialogue, the Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change called for enhanced international cooperation and the exchange of expertise and knowledge, particularly among countries with arid and hyper-arid environments. This would contribute to making the restoration of rangelands a development priority that supports the sustainability of natural resources and strengthens the resilience of ecosystems and communities.

A new batch of licensed Qatari real estate brokers took the legal oath before the Real Estate Brokers Affairs Committee at the Ministry of Justice.The new batch comprises (43) real estate brokers, including individuals and real estate brokerage companies.The new batch of real estate brokers took the legal oath after completing the licensing procedures in accordance with the provisions of Law No. (22) of 2017 regulating real estate brokerage activities, and passing the mandatory training course for licensed real estate brokers.Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice for Real Estate Registration and Documentation Affairs and Chairman of the Real Estate Brokers Affairs Committee, Amer Saeed Al Ghafri said that the newly licensed brokers represent a valuable addition to the growing pool of authorized real estate professionals.He noted that their contribution will help support the continued growth and development of the real estate sector, enhance its investment appeal, and protect the rights of parties involved in property transactions by ensuring they are served by qualified, licensed brokers who are fully familiar with the legal requirements governing real estate transactions. He also reiterated the Committee's emphasis on the importance of dealing exclusively with licensed real estate brokers, as this helps safeguard the rights of all parties and ensures that transactions are conducted properly and efficiently. The Ministry of Justice is also intensifying its efforts to reorganize and regulate the real estate brokerage profession in accordance with Law No. 22 of 2017 regulating real estate brokerage activities. These efforts are aimed at supporting the national economy, improving mechanisms and practices within the real estate market, and providing professional training and development for those working in the brokerage sector, including owners of real estate offices and Qatari brokers.

To celebrate the enduring power of family narratives, Qatar National Library (QNL), in collaboration with the Family Consulting Center (Wifaq), hosted the "A Story from a Loved One: Family Cohesion and Storytelling Heritage" event on Thursday.The gathering underscored how the simple act of sharing stories serves as a vital bridge between generations, strengthening emotional bonds, cultivating shared values, and preserving cultural knowledge.The event opened with an engaging panel discussion, where specialists examined the profound impact of storytelling on family dynamics. A key focus of the session was the newly launched book, "Qissa Min Ghali" (A Story from a Loved One), highlighted as an exemplar for chronicling human experiences and transmitting core social and familial values.The panel underscored the vital importance of preserving family memory for future generations, while spotlighting the pivotal role of cultural and community institutions in championing and safeguarding this rich heritage.Issa Abdullah, writer and novelist, discussed how family stories transfer values and build intergenerational belonging. Ms. Lolwa Al-Yazeedi, Director of Community Awareness at Wifaq, highlighted the human messages embedded in the newly launched book and the role of real-life stories in fostering family dialogue.Rounding out the panel, Dr. Sharifa Noaman Al Emadi, Executive Director of the Doha International Family Institute, explored strategies for preserving family folktales for future generations.Reflecting on the initiative's core objectives, Director of Community Awareness at Wifaq, Lolwa Al Yazeedi said: "At Wifaq, we believe that family cohesion is built on the details of daily life. The stories passed down through generations create a vital space for dialogue, carrying values, memories, and shared experiences that foster a deep sense of belonging.""Through this session, we aim to encourage families to reclaim that space. By giving youth the opportunity to listen to, engage with, and document the stories of their parents and grandparents, we are strengthening intergenerational communication. Ultimately, this initiative underscores the importance of involving young people in preserving their family's heritage-transforming spoken memories into a lasting written legacy that binds generations together."Adding to this sentiment, Maram Al Mahmoud, QNL's Manager of Programs and Services for Children and Young Adults, said, "Every family carries its own archive of stories that shape our identities and what matters to us, long before anyone writes them down. Partnering with Wifaq on this event enabled us to remind families that the everyday narratives they share are as much a part of our national heritage as the works on our shelves."This vision was brought to life through the official launch of the book, A Story from a Loved One, which features a unique collection of stories written by children and young adults between the ages of 12 and 14. These young authors drew direct inspiration from the oralhistories and tales shared by their parents and grandparents, translating oral heritage into written works.Following the panel, children and parents participated in an interactive program of educational and creative activities designed to nurture a shared culture of reading. A dedicated children's corner offered storytelling, free drawing, interactive competitions, and coloring activities based on the book's original illustrations.The event also marked the launch of an extended four-week accompanying program hosted at the Library. As part of this initiative, the Children's Library introduced a new series of weekly Storytime sessions where the young authors of "A Story from a Loved One" will read their stories directly to children. These interactive sessions are designed to initiate dialogue about the stories' events and messages, artistic and creative expression activities, and commemorative photo opportunities with the young writers.The gathering was attended by representatives from various national institutions, reflecting a nationwide commitment to family cohesion. Attendees included representatives from several national institutions and community centers.The event stands as part of Qatar National Library's and Wifaq’s ongoing efforts to promote a reading culture, safeguard Qatar's heritage, and strengthen community and family engagement, and support young writers in developing and sharing their creative voices. 

The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) index rose 2% this week, adding 193.720 points to its tally, reaching a level of 9,876 points in the green zone, supported by most sectors, especially the communications and transportation sectors, which rose by around 3.81% and 2.92 % respectively. Regarding the index's performance this week, financial markets analyst Yousef Buhlaiqa told Qatar News Agency that the positive performance that characterized trading on QSE during this week, as it continued its gains for the fourth consecutive session, amid an improvement in investor sentiment due to indications of easing geopolitical tensions in the region, and renewed hopes for progress in diplomatic efforts related to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. He pointed out that the QSE index rose during the week's trading to approach the 9,900 point level, supported by purchases that affected a number of leading stocks, in addition to the transport sector stocks, most notably "Nakilat" company. He noted that the market movement indicates an improvement in investor appetite with the decline of some of the fears related to the repercussions of the regional conflict on energy and trade markets. Buhlaiqa anticipated the QSE index to continue to higher levels during the coming week, with the 10,000-point level remaining a prominent technical target for the market, noting that extending gains will remain linked to developments in oil prices, the course of regional negotiations, and the extent of improvement in liquidity and purchases in leading stocks. The gains in the Qatari market coincided with a decline in global oil prices, as crude prices continued to fall for several sessions amid growing optimism that arrangements could be reached to ease supply disruptions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz more regularly. 

 Qatar Chamber hosted yesterday a business delegation representing the Agency for the Development of Light Industry under the Cabinet of the Republic of Uzbekistan, headed by Oybek Khodjaev, director of the agency’s project office. The delegation was received by Qatar Chamber board member Dr Mohamed bin Jawhar al-Mohamed, in the presence of Dr Ashraf Khodjaev, ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Qatar. Discussions touched on economic and trade relations between the two nations, investment opportunities, and the business environment in both markets, as well as incentives and facilities available to foreign investors. Speaking at the meeting, al-Mohamed stressed the visit’s importance in boosting cooperation between the Qatari and Uzbek private sectors and exploring partnership opportunities. He noted that Uzbekistan is witnessing significant economic growth, while bilateral trade remains below expectations, highlighting the need to enhance private-sector cooperation. He also pointed out that light industries represent a promising area for cooperation, with opportunities for partnerships in manufacturing, production, technology and other fields. Furthermore, he highlighted Qatar’s investment environment, advanced infrastructure, modern economic and logistics zones, and strategic location providing access to regional markets. Khodjaev said the delegation comprises 14 leading Uzbek companies specialised in textiles. He noted that light industries account for around 10% of Uzbekistan’s economy, with approximately 10,000 companies operating in the sector, while exports reach 87 countries. He added that Uzbekistan is currently focusing on expanding into African and Gulf markets and expressed the agency’s readiness to promote investment opportunities available in Qatar among the Uzbek business community. Ambassador Khodjaev also presented a proposal to establish a textile and fabric manufacturing plant in Qatar through a Qatari-Uzbek partnership, combining Uzbek expertise and technology with Qatar’s investment environment, incentives, and available raw materials. He noted that such cooperation could help position Qatar as a regional and global hub for textile and fabric production. Al-Mohamed welcomed the proposal and stressed the importance of preparing a feasibility study for the project. 

 The volume of real estate trading in sale contracts registered with the Real Estate Registration Department at the Ministry of Justice from August 16-20 reached QR314,467,100, reports QNA. Meanwhile the total sales contracts for residential units in the Real Estate Bulletin for the same period stood at QR55,826,746. The weekly bulletin shows that the list of real estate properties traded for sale has included vacant land, residences, residential buildings, commercial shops, and residential units. Sales were concentrated in the municipalities of Al Rayyan, Doha, Al Wakrah, Umm Salal, Al Daayen, Al Khor, Al Thakhira and Al Shamal, and areas of Lusail 69, The Pearl, Al Wukair, Al Kharaej, Al Gharafa, Al Sakhama, Al Ebb, and Ghar Thuaileb. 

 The second day of the teachers’ orientation programme, held on August 24 at MES Indian School, featured section-wise academic reviews and a series of professional development sessions focused on innovative and holistic teaching practices. Teachers of all sections of the school conducted a slew of informative and engaging sessions on topics such as ‘Technology Integration in Teaching’, highlighting the effective use of technology in classrooms. ‘Integrating Art Across the Curriculum: A Holistic Learning Approach ', ' Hygiene and Safety’ through buddy teaching. ‘Smart Board & Digital Tools for Interactive Teaching’, ‘‘Play-Based and Inquiry Learning ’, and ‘Activity-Based Learning to Reinforce Concepts’, which added merit to the event. The day concluded with Dr Rajeev Thomas’s session, ‘From Teachers to Life Changers – Teaching at a Higher Level, Inspiring Life’. He highlighted challenges faced by young learners, including emotional fragility, identity crises, a lack of life skills, and communication difficulties. He stressed the importance of teachers understanding students’ worlds and creating a safe environment in which they can explore their potential. The sessions reinforced the school’s commitment to technology-enabled, activity-oriented and student-centred learning while empowering teachers to become effective mentors and life changers.
