Fatma Sultan al-Kuwari, CEO of the Doha 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid Committee, has highlighted Qatar’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, emphasising the potential of the event to create a lasting legacy that extends beyond sports infrastructure and venues.Al-Kuwari said Qatar had strong reasons to pursue its ambition, pointing to the country’s experience in hosting major sporting events and the skills and knowledge gained through organising international competitions. In a post on Qatar International Media Office platform, she noted that the Doha 2036 bid is currently in the continuous dialogue phase, during which interested bidding entities explore their ambitions and determine when they intend to pursue hosting the Games.According to al-Kuwari, the legacy of hosting a major sporting event should not be measured solely by infrastructure or sporting facilities, but also by its impact on individuals and communities. She highlighted the opportunities such events create for young people to discover sports, volunteers to gain new knowledge and experience, and athletes to compete and achieve their first victories. “We want the Games to really transform every individual that lives in Qatar and in the region,” al-Kuwari said.She added that the proposed Games could demonstrate how sport and culture can inspire hope and drive positive change around the world. Reaffirming confidence in Qatar’s ability to deliver major international events, al-Kuwari said the country consistently fulfils its commitments.Qatar’s bid ambition reflects a broader vision of using the Olympic and Paralympic Games as a platform to encourage participation in sport, develop skills, empower communities and create a lasting legacy for future generations. 

Qatar Museums (QM) celebrated the International White Cane Day Thursday under the theme A Story of Achievement: Beyond the Limits of Sight.The event highlighted the experiences and accomplishments of individuals with visual impairments, emphasised the importance of raising public awareness regarding their capabilities, and underscored the need to create more accessible cultural and educational environments to support their active participation in society.The event coincided with the global observance of International White Cane Day, held annually on October 15.The white cane is a vital tool for the independence of those with visual impairments; it serves not only as an aid for mobility but also as a key instrument that enables individuals to access various facilities and services with confidence and safety.During the celebration, National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) director Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Hamad al-Thani honoured several participants in recognition of their efforts and contributions toward raising social awareness about the needs of people with disabilities, particularly those who are blind or visually impaired.The Qatar Cultural Centre for the Blind, which operates under the Ministry of Culture, also participated in the event.The Centre showcased its programmes and its cultural and awareness-raising role, contributing to a greater understanding of the rights of individuals with visual impairments.It further sought to support their integration and active participation in society, underscoring the Centre's mission to foster social awareness regarding the importance of empowering blind individuals to lead independent and dignified lives.The participation also highlighted the vital role of the white cane as a universal symbol of independence, promoted a culture of respect for the rights of the blind and appreciation for their capabilities, and built bridges of communication with various segments of society through awareness programmes and events that champion the values of inclusion and equality.Qatar Cultural Centre for the Blind chairman Faisal al-Kohji told the Qatar News Agency (QNA) that hosting such events, and the attention given to them by Qatari cultural institutions, stems from their significant role in shedding light on the key challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments.These initiatives, he said, help address how to interact with this group, while also cultivating broader social awareness regarding how to engage with them, as well as with persons with disabilities in general.Al-Kohji said that the QM's hosting of this event at the NMoQ underscores the practical role such organisations play in enhancing the quality of services provided to individuals with visual impairments.Ensuring the participation of this group in cultural life is a commitment enshrined in both local legislation and international conventions ratified by Qatar.These efforts aim to achieve equality and ensure that people with disabilities, and specifically those with visual impairments, can fully benefit from the services offered by cultural institutions.NMo programme specialist Dr Joumana Obeid told the QNA that the museum is committed to inclusivity, offering comprehensive facilities for all visitors, including those with disabilities, such as visual impairments.She noted that these accommodations begin the moment a visitor arrives at the museum's parking facility and continue until their departure.This includes the organisation of specialised tours, during which visitors can explore the museum's various exhibits with the help of dedicated assistive tools.Obeid further noted that the museum's reception team is fully trained in interacting with and appropriately guiding individuals with disabilities.The goal is to ensure that their visit is as smooth and accessible as possible, supported by specialised, well-suited resources that enable them to navigate the museum and take full advantage of its offerings. 

Hosts Qatar will launch their Gulf U-17 Cup Qatar 2026 campaign against tournament debutants China today, aiming to make a winning start on home soil as the 10-team competition kicks off in Doha. The opening Group A clash is scheduled for 5:45pm at Grand Hamad Stadium, with Qatar looking to capitalise on home advantage and take an early step towards the semi-finals. The UAE will face Bahrain at Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium at 8pm in Friday's other fixture.Qatar, coached by Nicholas Arnaldo, have been drawn in Group A alongside the UAE, Oman, Bahrain and China. Group B comprises defending champions Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Yemen and Egypt. The hosts have named a 23-player squad for the tournament, with Arnaldo counting on a blend of young talent to deliver a strong campaign. China, meanwhile, will make their first appearance in the competition, adding a new challenge to the opening fixture.Saudi Arabia begin their title defence on Saturday against Egypt at Grand Hamad Stadium, while Iraq take on Yemen at Saoud bin Abdulrahman Stadium. The group stage runs through October 29, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the semi-finals on November 1. The final will be played at Grand Hamad Stadium on November 4.The tournament features 23 matches across three venues and brings together the eight Gulf Football Federation member associations, alongside invited teams China and Egypt. The expanded field is intended to provide stronger competition and valuable preparation for upcoming international assignments, including the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026.Saudi Arabia claimed the inaugural title in Qatar in 2025, defeating the UAE 2-0 in the final. 

Lusail Sports Club has launched its table tennis programme under the umbrella of the Qatar Table Tennis Association as part of its strategy to expand into various sports and attract more participants.The club has strengthened its squad with three signings ahead of upcoming tournaments and competitions. Ahmed al-Awlaqi, captain of the Qatar national table tennis team, is among the club’s new recruits. The experienced player has represented Qatar at international competitions and achieved notable success. The club has also signed promising national team player Ahmed Qarni and Ibrahim Gibran, both on loan from Qatar SC.The contracts were signed by Lusail Sports Club Vice-President Jassim Mohammed al-Mudahka in the presence of the club’s table tennis team manager, Yousef Nasser al-Hajjaji.The launch of table tennis is part of the club’s wider plan to expand its sporting activities. Lusail also intends to introduce men’s and women’s futsal and basketball in the near future.The club said the expansion aims to attract talent, develop athletes and provide more opportunities for participation in different sports. It also seeks to strengthen cooperation with national sports federations and support the development of local talent in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. 

The Qatar Football Association (QFA), represented by its President HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani in his capacity as a member of the FIFA Council, participated in the Council's 37th meeting on Friday.  Chaired by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the meeting took place via video conference, with participants discussing a wide range of items on the agenda and adopting the appropriate decisions and recommendations.  According to a statement issued by FIFA, the FIFA administration presented the FIFA Council with a proposed initiative called the FIFA Surplus Solidarity Program, which would use a portion of FIFA's reserves to more than double the level of planned funding for the 2027-2030 period to USD 6.35 billion.  Under this proposal, the allocations per FIFA Member Association will reach USD 25 million, while distributions to confederations, zonal/regional associations and other stakeholders are set to significantly increase their Forward 4.0 entitlements, with the terms of distribution being aligned with the development of women's and youth football, long-term football projects and footballing infrastructure.  The plan, including the eligibility, application, approval, disbursement, control and audit requirements, will be finalized by the relevant FIFA committees and subsequently by the FIFA Council at its next meeting in December 2026, and included in the Annual Report 2026, all of which will be subject to approval at the 77th FIFA Congress in March 2027, in line with the established governance practices.

The Gulf Football Federation (GFF) Referees Committee has announced the match official appointments for the opening round of the second edition of the Gulf U-17 Cup Qatar 2026, which will take place in Qatar from 16 October to 4 November. The tournament will feature 10 national teams competing in 23 matches, making it the largest edition in the competition's history in terms of participating teams. The tournament is organised by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) in Qatar, in coordination with the Gulf Football Federation. Saudi referee Ali Mohammed Al Qahtani has been appointed to officiate the opening match between Qatar and China in Group A at Hamad Grand Stadium. He will be assisted by fellow Saudis Saad Al Shabrami and Mohammed Wazi, with Abdullah Zarban, also from Saudi Arabia, serving as the fourth official. Abdullah Al Balushi has been appointed as the referee assessor. Meanwhile, Kuwaiti referee Dawood Al Abdullah will take charge of the second Group A fixture between the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain at Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium. He will be assisted by compatriot Shafi Al Failakawi and Iraq's Shaker Adib, while fellow Iraqi Laith Sattam will serve as the fourth official. Abdulrahman Al Amri has been appointed as the referee assessor.

The fifth round of political consultations between the foreign ministries in the State of Qatar and the Kingdom of Sweden was held in Stockholm on Thursday.HE Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi headed the Qatari side, while Director-General for Global Affairs at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs Mikael Lindvall headed the Swedish side.During the consultations, both sides discussed ways to foster cooperative relations between the two countries.The consultations were attended by HE Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Kingdom of Sweden Nadia bint Ahmed Al Sheebi along with the accompanying delegation. 

His Excellency Minister of Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, met on Thursday with Minister of Interior of the Syrian Arab Republic, Anas Khattab, during His Excellency's visit to the country.During the meeting, they discussed cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to enhance and develop them, particularly in the security fields. They also discussed several topics of mutual interest.
