Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit has met a delegation from Qatar's Committee for the Alliance of Civilizations, led by HE Ambassador Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Sada, in Cairo.During the meeting, the Qatari delegation reviewed initiatives and projects launched by the State of Qatar in the field of the Alliance of Civilizations. These included the Qatar Global Award for Dialogue Among Civilizations, the Alliance of Civilizations Magazine, and the Encyclopedia of Occidentalism.The delegation said the encyclopedia is the first project of its kind in the Arab and Islamic world aimed at understanding Western societies from an Islamic perspective.At the end of the meeting, the delegation presented Aboul Gheit with a copy of the four-volume Encyclopedia of Occidentalism. 

Qatar Museums (QM) has announced it will present a curated collection of new releases during the 35th Doha International Book Fair (DIBF). The fair will take place from May 14 to 23, 2026 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, commonly known as DECC. A Qatar Museums statement said the organisation’s participation would give visitors the opportunity to explore a broad range of publications produced by the institution over the years, reflecting its efforts to document and share cultural narratives from Qatar, the wider region and beyond. It added that it would showcase award-winning publications and exhibition catalogues that highlight the role of books in connecting audiences with art, culture and heritage. The collection spans subjects including art, design, architecture, archaeology, sport, photography and children’s literature. Alongside newly released works, the Qatar Museums booth will also feature publications linked to some of the institution’s most prominent exhibitions and initiatives, underscoring its continued investment in research, storytelling and cultural exchange through publishing. Visitors will also be able to explore bilingual and multilingual editions intended to make art and heritage more accessible to diverse audiences. Mai al-Nesf, Head of Publications Shared Services and a published Qatari author, said the institution aimed to encourage learning and dialogue through its publications. “Through our participation in the Doha International Book Fair, we are pleased to present publications that open new windows onto art and culture, providing the public with opportunities for learning, dialogue, and discovery,” she said. Among the titles being showcased are Nested in Modernity: Moments from the History of Doha’s Old Palace, A Seat at the Table: Food and Feasting in the Islamic World and Seeing Is Believing: The Art and Influence of Jean-Leon Gerome. The display will also include Splendours of the Atlas: A Voyage through Morocco’s Heritage, Manzar: Art and Architecture from Pakistan, 1940s to Today and Al Journal — Volume One. Since its establishment, Qatar Museums has developed an extensive archive of exhibition catalogues, scholarly works, research publications and children’s books as part of its broader mission to make culture, creativity and knowledge accessible to local, regional and international audiences. 

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has introduced a fresh batch of electronic services in the first quarter of this year, comprising 29 services on its website and 57 on its mobile application Bee’ah. The move is designed to streamline procedures, lift the quality of services offered to individuals, companies and beneficiaries, and speed up transactions through digital channels. The rollout forms part of the ministry’s broader push to deepen digital transformation across its operations, in keeping with a strategy built around government service excellence, innovation, a better user experience and the development of digital systems that deliver efficient and flexible service.In a statement issued yesterday, the ministry said the new offering covers 40 electronic services in radiation protection. These handle the issuance, renewal, amendment and cancellation of personal licences for work in radiation-related fields, licences for possessing radioactive materials and radiation devices, licences for importing and exporting radioactive materials, and licences for vehicles transporting such materials. A further 12 services relate to hazardous waste, among them the renewal of permits for disposing of hazardous healthcare waste, the issuance of maritime transit permits for hazardous waste shipments, and extensions of those transit permits.  The package also features 16 electronic services tied to the Wildlife Development Department, including permits for quarry operations, the issuance and renewal of permits for installing mobile crushers, permits to visit Fuwairit Beach, and permits to begin project work in areas of wild vegetation, alongside other services. Eighteen additional services cover the Natural Reserves Sector and are available on both the ministry’s website and the app. They include environmental permits for temporary activities, land lease contracts for service activities, land lease contracts for motorcycle rental activities, permits to visit natural reserves, filming permits within reserves, and permits to visit whale shark and dugong aggregations. Speaking on the launch, Yousef Ibrahim al-Hamar, Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs at the ministry, said the new package is part of efforts to develop the environmental services system and ease procedures for individuals, companies and beneficiaries, consistent with the country’s drive towards digital transformation and more efficient government services. He said the services help structure how applications are submitted and tracked electronically and make it easier to complete transactions, particularly those involving technical and environmental licences and permits. The ministry, he added, is working to convert services of a technical and regulatory nature into clear, user-friendly digital offerings that save beneficiaries time and effort and cut down on in-person visits, without diluting the accuracy of procedures or the requirements approved for each service. Al-Hamar also noted that the expansion of electronic services reflects the ministry’s commitment to sharpening its digital tools and providing easier and more effective services, reinforcing its work to protect the environment and uphold the highest levels of compliance with approved standards. 

Qatar Airways will resume flight operations to Helsinki, Finland, and Tokyo Haneda, Japan from July 15 as part of a wider push to expand services across international markets, the airline announced yesterday. The carrier will operate four weekly flights to Helsinki from July 15, scaling up to a daily service from August 1. Travellers from Australia, Kenya, and Southeast Asia will benefit from the airline’s extensive global network, it said. Complementing its existing service to Tokyo Narita (NRT), Qatar Airways will return to Tokyo Haneda (HND) with four weekly flights from July 15, rising to seven weekly flights from August 1. The Haneda route will facilitate onward transfers in Japan for travellers from Europe and the Middle East. Qatar Airways said it is furthering global connectivity by rebuilding its network to cover more than 160 destinations across six continents this summer.

The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has announced that 29 of its health centres have renewed their certification for sustainable operations under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) developed by the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD). The PHCC said that a number of several facilities achieved high performance ratings, including platinum and gold classifications, reflecting standards in operational sustainability, resource efficiency and indoor environmental quality. The achievement marks a significant milestone for the organisation, which said it had become the first government entity in Qatar to renew GSAS Operations certifications for a second cycle.The certification renewal process is required every four years to maintain compliance with approved sustainability standards. GORD chairman Dr Yousef Alhorr described the renewed certification as an important environmental and institutional accomplishment. “The Primary Health Care Corporation’s centres receiving GSAS Operations certification for the second consecutive time represents a distinguished environmental and institutional achievement that reflects a commitment to making sustainability an integral part of the healthcare system in Qatar,” he said. Musallam Mubarak al-Nabet, the PHCC’s assistant managing director for Administrative Affairs and Shared Services, said that the recertification demonstrated the organisation’s commitment to delivering sustainable healthcare services.The GSAS Operations certification provides a data-driven framework aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of existing buildings while enhancing indoor environmental quality for occupants. 

Shell Qatar, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior (MoI), represented by the North Security Department, recently organised an awareness event for workers as part of the International Workers’ Day 2026 celebrations. The event witnessed the participation of more than 470 workers representing 14 of the largest companies working in the Northern region of Qatar. The event in Al Khor, with the participation of various MoI departments and the private sector, presented lectures on pedestrian traffic safety, drug prevention, the importance of enhancing workers’ mental and psychological well-being, and cultural integration by introducing Qatari customs and traditions to workers. In addition, the ministry’s Human Rights Department delivered a presentation on workers’ rights and responsibilities, and on ways to promote and strengthen human rights principles among workers.The programme included a cultural, safety, and security awareness competition that saw high participation, concluding with an awards ceremony to honour the winners. “Organising this event reflects the integration between security and community aspects,” said said Colonel Ahmed Saad al-Muhannadi from the North Security Department. “It contributes to enhancing worker awareness, developing a sense of security, and preventing crime.” On behalf of Shell Qatar, Eng. Hussain al-Hajji, general manager of Public Relations, said that the “Bedar” community awareness events reflect Shell Qatar’s commitment to empowering communities and raising worker awareness. The “Bedar” initiative is one of the key community programmes led by Shell Qatar in collaboration with the MoI, and it aims to enhance workers’ awareness and integrate them into national and community events, contributing to improving their quality of life and supporting social sustainability in Qatar. 

German businesses continue to view Qatar as a trusted partner, with bilateral trade ties and energy co-operation holding firm despite geopolitical turbulence. Dr Martin Henkelmann, Regional CEO of the German Chambers of Commerce (AHK) covering Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Pakistan, said the presence of German companies in Qatar remains stable, underpinned by more than two decades of institutional commitment through the German Industry and Commerce Office in Doha. In an exclusive interview with Gulf Times, Dr Henkelmann emphasised that German firms value reliability and trust, qualities that have characterised their long standing relationship with Qatar. This foundation, he noted, continues to guide investment decisions and reinforces confidence in the country’s business environment. The long term energy partnership between Germany and Qatar, formalised in 2022, remains a cornerstone of bilateral cooperation, said Dr Henkelmann, noting that the agreement reflects a mutual commitment to technical exchange and know how transfer, with dialogue platforms being expanded to strengthen coordination between stakeholders on both sides. German engineering and construction firms also remain engaged in Qatar’s infrastructure pipeline, supported by the country’s clear development path under the Qatar National Vision 2030, he emphasised. Dr Henkelmann said opportunities in technology, healthcare and infrastructure continue to attract German expertise, with companies taking a long term view rather than being swayed by short term geopolitical volatility. He pointed out that German businesses are increasingly shifting from project based cooperation toward knowledge and innovation driven partnerships. “The next step is therefore not only exporting products, but increasingly contributing through local partnerships, research and development co-operation, training initiatives, and long term technology transfer,” Dr Henkelmann explained. Dr Henkelmann also highlighted the role of the German Chamber, working closely with Team Germany, including the Embassy of Germany in Doha and the German Business Council Qatar, to actively support companies. “We are facilitating direct exchange between businesses, logistics providers, authorities, and other stakeholders to improve coordination and share reliable market information in real time,” he said.In addition, the chamber provides market intelligence, business partner matching, networking platforms, and close coordination with both German and Qatari partners. Dr Henkelmann noted that in uncertain times, “trusted networks and direct communication channels become even more valuable for maintaining business continuity.” Sectors such as digital health, smart industry solutions, cybersecurity, vocational training, sustainable urban development and environmental technology were identified as areas where German companies could expand their presence in Qatar. Dr Henkelmann said these fields represent the next phase of bilateral engagement, moving beyond traditional contracts toward deeper collaboration in innovation and skills development. German businesses, he said, are highly regarded for quality, reliability, and technical expertise, noting that the challenge now is to translate those strengths into partnerships that deliver long term value for Qatar’s diversification agenda while opening new avenues for German firms to contribute to the country’s growth. Dr Henkelmann added: “The German companies’ view is long-term and future-oriented and therefore not driven by geopolitical ups and downs.”

The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) concluded a training programme for Qatar University (QU) students, organised as part of its annual educational campaign targeting students of universities, schools and civil and military state institutions, under the theme 'toward a society aware of its rights.'In this context, NHRC's Director of Programs and Education Hamad al-Hajri emphasised the NHRC's commitment to openness and communication with various public bodies, institutions, and stakeholders, especially students and youth, through training them, building their capacities, and providing platforms that enable them to express their ideas and views, thus contributing to preparing them for active participation in shaping future visions and programmes.Al-Hajri urged the course participants to be ambassadors for human rights, through active participation in human rights activities and programmes, and to contribute to consolidating the leading position that the State of Qatar enjoys regionally and internationally, through engaging in community, human rights, humanitarian and development initiatives, and providing views and proposals in various fields of human rights.He pointed out that the dialogues and discussions that took place during the training programme over four months reflected an advanced human rights awareness among the students. He stressed his confidence in their ability to understand the human rights system, its standards and national, regional and international protection mechanisms, and to interpret this knowledge into real practices in their personal lives and professional careers. The training programme included a series of theoretical lectures, practical activities and field training within the various departments of the committee, with the aim of introducing participants to the principles and foundations of human rights, their historical origins and development, developing practical skills in the fields of human rights work, in addition to applying theoretical knowledge within the institutional work environment, and enhancing awareness of the role of the NHRC, its competencies and its working mechanisms at the national and international levels.The programme also focused on raising awareness of the international human rights protection system, monitoring mechanisms and international reports, and enabling female students to practice professionally in a realistic work environment that is appropriate to their academic specialisations.It addressed the concept of human rights and its intellectual and historical origins, as a system with multiple intellectual, religious, political and social tributaries, in addition to reviewing the development of the concept of human rights after the First and Second World Wars, and what resulted from it in the establishment of the international system for the protection of human dignity.The programme also addressed the International Bill of Human Rights, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights issued in 1948, its background, formulation, legal nature and the extent of its binding nature, as well as the two International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and their importance in transforming human rights principles into international legal obligations.
