The Permanent Web Summit Organising Committee held its annual strategic meeting in Doha, bringing together partners to guide the next phase of Web Summit Qatar's growth as preparations continue for its fourth edition, which will take place from 31 January to 3 February 2027.The meeting was chaired by HE Sheikh Jassim bin Mansour bin Jabor Al-Thani, Director of the Government Communications Office and Chairman of the Permanent Web Summit Organising Committee. It was attended by committee members representing the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Visit Qatar and Invest Qatar. Representatives of Qatar Investment Authority and Qatar Airways also attended the meeting alongside Web Summit founder and CEO Paddy Cosgrave and senior members of the Web Summit team.The committee reviewed the growing impact of Web Summit Qatar as a platform for entrepreneurship, investment, and innovation. Since the 2025 edition, 69 startups participating in Web Summit Qatar's Startup Programme have collectively raised more than USD 205 million in funding, reflecting the programme's role in connecting founders with global investors.During Web Summit Qatar 2026, more than 300 companies registered with Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), contributing to a 57% year-on-year increase in QFC registrations during the first quarter. These outcomes have supported Qatar's continued rise as a regional innovation hub, with the country achieving its highest-ever ranking in the StartupBlink Global Startup Ecosystem Index.Building on these outcomes, the committee set priorities for the year ahead, with a focus on strengthening international participation, attracting leading startups, investors, and technology companies, increasing opportunities for Qatari entrepreneurs and ensuring the event continues to deliver long-term economic and ecosystem impact.HE Sheikh Jassim bin Mansour bin Jabor Al-Thani said: "Web Summit Qatar has become an important platform for connecting entrepreneurs, investors, and technology leaders from around the world while supporting Qatar's digital economy. As we prepare for the fourth edition, we remain focused on building on that momentum and ensuring the partnership continues to create long-term opportunities for Qatar and the wider region."Paddy Cosgrave, founder and CEO of Web Summit, said: "Each edition of Web Summit Qatar has demonstrated the strength of our partnership with Qatar and the growing international interest in the event. We're looking forward to building on that success and welcoming the global technology community back to Doha in 2027."Web Summit Qatar will return to Doha from 31 January to 3 February 2027, bringing together entrepreneurs, investors, technology leaders, and policymakers from around the world. Through the continued partnership between the Permanent Web Summit Organising Committee and Web Summit, the event will build on the outcomes of previous editions while creating new opportunities for startups, investment, and international collaboration.

Syria condemned the attack targeting two tankers belonging to Qatar and Saudi Arabia while they were transiting the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as an unacceptable act and a violation of international law and freedom of maritime navigation.In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Syria's full solidarity with Qatar and Saudi Arabia, calling on the international community to take serious action to protect international waterways and safeguard regional security and stability. 

The Kingdom of Bahrain has strongly denounced the Iranian attack on the Saudi tanker "Wedyan" and the Qatari tanker "Al Rekayyat" while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.It stressed that this act is unacceptable, as it jeopardizes the security of international navigation and global energy supplies and amounts to a grave breach of the provisions of international law, UN Security Council Resolution 2817, and the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, in addition to vitiating de-escalation efforts and the entrenchment of regional security and stability.In a statement, the Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs reemphasized that the Kingdom of Bahrain stands in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar in all measures they pursue to safeguard their security and critical interests.The Ministry reiterated its call on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to assume its responsibility and take a resolute position to prevent the recurrence of Iranian sinful assaults and ensure the unrestricted freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without imposing any illegal tolls.It further stressed that weaponizing the Strait of Hormuz for economic pressure, extortion, and disrupting safe transit through international waterways must be rejected under the provisions of international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).The statement indicated that these instruments are fundamental pillars of energy security, food and medical supplies, and the flow of international commerce, which ultimately help consolidate security, stability, and prosperity in the region and around the world. 

Qatar has drawn one of its strongest waves of foreign business in recent years, with 3,295 non-Qatari companies registered in the first quarter of 2026 — a vote of international confidence that underscores the country's growing pull as a regional investment hub.The surge came despite the economic uncertainties and geopolitical challenges buffeting global markets during the quarter, and points to a business environment that continues to reassure investors even in turbulent times.According to a report by Qatar TV, the first-quarter figure marked one of the strongest bursts of foreign business establishment in years. The momentum reflects Qatar's ability to attract international investors through a blend of economic stability, advanced infrastructure, investor-friendly legislation, and expanding opportunities across multiple sectors.The increase comes as Qatar presses ahead with policies designed to sharpen its competitiveness as a regional and global business hub. Key drivers include the steady development of economic and investment regulations, efficient and easily accessible procedures for setting up businesses, and broader scope for foreign ownership across various sectors.Over recent years, the country has introduced a series of reforms aimed at making the investment process faster and more accessible. These measures have improved the ease of doing business, encouraging multinationals and entrepreneurs to establish operations in Qatar. Among the most significant steps has been the expansion of foreign ownership rules, allowing international investors to hold up to 100% of companies in many sectors — a move that has notably lifted market confidence.The strong showing was also evident on specialised economic platforms, particularly the Qatar Financial Centre, which added more than 800 new companies during the first quarter — a growth of around 57% on the same period a year earlier. The jump signals rising interest from global firms seeking to use Qatar as a base for regional operations.Foreign investment inflows are also undergoing a structural shift. While energy, particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG), remains the cornerstone of the economy, international capital is increasingly flowing into emerging fields such as financial services, technology, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and other knowledge-based industries.This diversification aligns with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, which seeks to build a sustainable, diversified economy capable of competing globally while reducing reliance on traditional sectors. The strategy places strong emphasis on innovation, human capital development, entrepreneurship, and the growth of a knowledge-driven economy.Qatar's ability to attract international companies has been further underpinned by major investment in infrastructure and logistics. World-class transport networks — including the expansion of Hamad International Airport and the continued growth of Hamad Port — have strengthened the country's role as a gateway linking Asia, Europe, and Africa.Financial indicators tell the same story. The stock of foreign direct investment reached around QR165.4bn by the end of 2025, reflecting sustained confidence among international investors and the continued inflow of foreign capital into the national economy.The growth in foreign companies mirrors Qatar's current economic performance and points to bright prospects ahead. International businesses increasingly view the country as a strategic location offering political stability, competitive regulations, advanced infrastructure, and access to fast-growing regional markets.Investment promotion bodies, meanwhile, continue to step up efforts to position Qatar as a global centre for business and innovation. Through initiatives supporting entrepreneurship, digital transformation, and sector diversification, the country is aiming to attract higher-value investment that contributes to long-term growth.As global competition for capital intensifies, Qatar's ongoing economic reforms, financial strength, and commitment to sustainable development are reinforcing its reputation as an attractive destination for international business. 

His Excellency the Governor of the Qatar Central Bank and Chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority, Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, held separate meetings with Founder and CEO of WHOOP, Will Ahmed; CEO of HPS Investment Partners, Scott Kapnick; Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of the Carlyle Group, David Rubenstein; and President and Chief Operating Officer of the Blackstone Group, Jonathan Gray, during his visit to New York, reports QNA. The meetings discussed key global financial and investment developments.

The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce has invited Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani to serve as a keynote speaker at the fifth edition of the Arab-Brazilian Economic Forum, to be held in Sao Paulo on August 25.The invitation was received by Qatar Chamber board member Mohamed bin Ahmed al-Obaidli from Mohamad Mourad, vice president for International Relations, and Rafael Solimeo, director and head of the International Office. Both Brazilian chamber officials also held a meeting with al-Obaidli to discuss trade and economic cooperation between Qatar and Brazil.The meeting discussed the role of Qatar Chamber and the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in strengthening these relations. They also explored ways to enhance the role of the private sector in both countries in promoting bilateral trade and mutual investment.It also addressed ways to strengthen cooperation between the two sides and develop a roadmap aimed at boosting bilateral trade and increasing mutual investments across various sectors, particularly food security and food industries.Mourad noted that the forum, organised in cooperation with the Union of Arab Chambers and under the auspices of the League of Arab States, will carry the theme’ The Global Economy in Transformation: A New Agenda between Brazil and the Arab Countries’. He invited Qatar Chamber to participate in the forum, which aims to consolidate relations between Brazil and the Arab countries and strengthen partnerships between the private sectors in both regions.Al-Obaidli lauded the strong relations between Qatar and Brazil, stressing Qatar Chamber’s commitment to enhancing trade cooperation and encouraging the establishment of joint ventures and alliances between Qatari and Brazilian companies to increase trade exchange.

Qatar Charity (QC), in co-operation with Mauritania’s ministry of social action, childhood and family, has inaugurated a sewing workshop in Nouakchott to support female graduates of the Women’s Empowerment Training Centre. The project, implemented through the QC’s Mauritania branch, targets breadwinners of vulnerable families and aims to enhance their economic empowerment through sustainable income-generating opportunities. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Lalla Fatimetou Mint Seddik Ould Larbi, adviser to the minister of social action, childhood and family; Fahd Salem al-Dosari, chargé d’affaires at Qatar’s embassy in Mauritania; Akhyarhoum Ould El Mostafa, deputy governor of Nouakchott West; Eng. Omer Abdelaziz Mohamed, country director of Qatar Charity’s Mauritania branch; Yent Agjereb, director of the Women’s Empowerment Training Centre; and several officials from the ministry and QC. Speaking at the event, Mohamed highlighted the strong partnership between Qatar Charity and the ministry, noting that the project reflects the organisation’s commitment to promoting sustainable economic empowerment. He said the workshop aims to provide Women’s Empowerment Training Centre graduates with employment opportunities and a stable source of income. Al-Dosari said the workshop is an example of the strong co-operation between Qatar and Mauritania and reflects their shared commitment to supporting vulnerable groups and advancing economic and social empowerment. Meanwhile, Larbi said the project helps build the capacities of young women and enhance their economic independence by providing them with skills needed in the labour market. She thanked Qatar Charity for its continued support and constructive co-operation with the ministry in serving vulnerable communities. 

With the focus on nurturing the next generation of scientists, engineers and analytical minds, the Qatar Centre for Quantum Computing (QC2) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, in collaboration with Qatar Foundation’s summer camp programme, Mukhayamna 2026, has launched the third edition of its Quantum Computing Summer School: QSchool 2026. QSchool 2026 is a weeklong programme held at the multipurpose hall of the research complex at Education City, consisting of various workshops to introduce high school students to the world of quantum computing. Mukhayamna 2026 is the flagship summer programme organised by Qatar Foundation’s Pre-University Education, featuring a wide variety of specialised camps for boys and girls, focusing on sports, computing, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. “QSchool 2026 opens a window for high school students into the quantum future, giving them early exposure to ideas and technologies that can help shape Qatar’s next generation of scientists, innovators, and technology leaders,” Dr Saif M al-Kuwari, associate professor at the College of Science and Engineering HBKU told Gulf Times. Started this Sunday, the workshop has specific themes and topics meant for each day of the programme. There will be a number of engaging interactive lectures, hands-on activities and laboratory sessions during the programme. At the workshop, students will explore the foundations of quantum mechanics, learn how quantum computers process information and experiment with quantum circuits, algorithms, teleportation and cryptography using simulated and real quantum platforms. During the QSchool 2026 there will a special guided tour of QC2 Lab, offering students first-hand exposure to quantum experiments and research environments supporting emerging quantum technologies. The programme focuses on high school students from across Qatar and aims to inspire the next generation of quantum scientists, engineers, and innovators. The programme started with an introduction to quantum computing and quantum mechanics. It explored the basic principles of quantum mechanics and how they enable quantum computing, with a focus on superposition, entanglement, measurement and wave-particle duality. The programme then moves on to quantum circuits, learning how quantum computers process information using qubits, quantum gates and quantum circuits, and experimenting with basic quantum operations through simulated environments and quantum hardware platforms. The workshop also discusses quantum algorithms and discovering how quantum algorithms can be used to approach certain problems in new ways, and why quantum computers may offer advantages for selected computational tasks. Furthermore, another topic discussed during the workshop was quantum teleportation. It explores quantum teleportation and learning how entanglement and classical communication can be used to transfer quantum information, while also simulating simple teleportation protocols. The next topic during the workshop is quantum cryptography. This enables participants to learn about quantum key distribution and how the principles of Quantum Physics can support secure communication. In addition, there will be a guided tour of the QC2 Lab facility. QC2 is a pioneering research hub at HBKU, and it focuses on advancing theoretical and experimental research in quantum computation, communication, and sensing. QC2 has a dedicated quantum laboratory, driving national digital resilience. It aims to establish a vibrant quantum ecosystem in Qatar, fostering collaboration among government, academia, and industry and is expected to cultivate, sustain, and propel the advancement of quantum technologies while addressing potential challenges in Qatar and around the world. 

The General Tax Authority (GTA) has announced the implementation of a new Excise Tax mechanism on Sweetened Drinks, effective July 6, 2026, based on a Tiered Volumetric Model under which the applicable tax is calculated according to the amount of sugar or added sweeteners contained in taxable beverages and products.In a statement issued on Monday, the Authority explained that the new mechanism is introduced pursuant to Law No. (2) of 2026, amending certain provisions of the Excise Tax Law, including the schedule of excise goods subject to tax. The amendments expand the scope of taxable goods to include Sugar-Sweetened Drinks, such as soft drinks and juices containing added sugar, as well as products that can be converted into beverages and contain sugar or added sweeteners, including concentrates, powders, extracts, and other similar products.The Authority emphasized that all people holding excise goods are required to submit a Transitional Declaration through the Dhareeba platform to declare their taxable inventory. Where the total inventory is less than 200,000 liters, taxpayers are required to submit the declaration only, with no Excise Tax payable. Where the total inventory is 200,000 liters or more, taxpayers must submit an audited inventory report confirming the quantity of stock held and pay any applicable Excise Tax.The GTA further clarified that the amount of Excise Tax payable is not determined solely by the volume of inventory, but by the sugar or added sweetener content of the beverages. Accordingly, the tax payable may be zero, even where the inventory exceeds the threshold, if all products fall within non-taxable categories. Excise Tax is payable only on beverages containing medium or high levels of added sugar.The Authority urges taxpayers to submit their tax return through the Dhareeba platform within 90 days from July 6, 2026, and to pay any tax due within 30 days from the date of filing the return.The Authority also clarified that the Excise Tax applies only to packaged products and does not apply to beverages prepared for immediate consumption and supplied to final consumers without sealed packaging.This initiative forms part of the state's broader efforts to reduce the consumption of high-sugar products and encourage manufacturers to reduce the sugar content of their products, contributing to improved public health and enhancing quality of life. 

The Qatar Football Association (QFA) is taking part in delivering the FIFA World Cup 2026, with several of its staff managing match operations as part of a knowledge and expertise transfer programme between the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and FIFA. The programme draws on the organisational experience Qatar gained from hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and other major international tournaments. QFA staff are taking on key roles at several stadiums, including overseeing operations and coordinating with participating teams, helping to deliver a seamless match experience in line with FIFA standards.  Abdulla Mohammed Jassim Al IshaqDeputy Match DirectorNew York New Jersey Stadium Abdulla Mohammed Jassim Al Ishaq is taking part as Deputy Match Director at New York New Jersey Stadium, leading operational activities and overseeing the stadium's readiness to host fixtures in line with FIFA requirements. His role includes managing team arrival and match coordination meetings, collaborations with participating teams and various operational bodies, as well as following up on pre-match ceremonies, pitch management, dressing rooms and match official facility readiness.  Ali Hamoud Al NuaimiMatch CommissionerHouston Stadium Ali Hamoud Al Nuaimi is serving as Match Commissioner at Houston Stadium, overseeing all organisational aspects of the match and monitoring proceedings and ensuring all parties comply with tournament regulations and FIFA requirements. He is also responsible for documenting events related to the match and preparing official match reports.  Abdulla Al AnsariMatch CoordinatorHouston Stadium Abdulla Al Ansari is working as Match Coordinator at Houston Stadium, liaising between teams and tournament management, running coordination meetings, ensuring the readiness of dressing rooms and other facilities, and managing team schedules from arrival at the stadium through to departure.  Ahmed Al SayedMatch CoordinatorMiami Stadium Ahmed Al Sayed is serving as Match Coordinator at Miami Stadium, handling team logistics and ensuring compliance with tournament regulations. His responsibilities also include reviewing and approving player and technical staff lists, overseeing team schedules, and coordinating with match officials, the match commissioner, media, security and the anti-doping team. This participation reflects the growing trust placed in Qatari professionals on the international stage, and the talent Qatar continues to build through its experience organising major global events.

The Qatar U-18 National basketball team has departed for Yalova, Turkiye, to begin a training camp running from 6 to 15 July 2026. This camp marks the final stage of preparations for the Gulf U-18 Championship, which will be hosted in Doha from 17 to 22 July, serving as a qualifier for the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship. Organized under the Qatar Basketball Federation’s development plan, the camp aims to enhance the players’ technical and physical readiness, while providing the coaching staff with an opportunity to finalize the best lineup ahead of official competition. The program includes four friendly matches against Turkish clubs and the Turkiye U-18 national team, designed to give the players strong competitive exposure, improve team cohesion, and assess tactical readiness before returning to Doha. The delegation is headed by Khalid Ahmed al-Mughni. The technical staff is led by Turkish coach Cengiz Karadağ, assisted by Abdo Al-Harji, Hashim Zaidan, and Mounir Ben Ghalla, with Kenan as fitness coach and Saif Al-Din Al-Hamandi as physiotherapist. The administrative staff includes Omar Ahmed and Ayoub Lotfi. The squad features 11 players: Tamim Ashraf Abu Issa, Meshaal Khalid Al-Mughni, Moaz Omar Mousa, Azzam Mohammed Yaken, Ziyad Tamer Al-Johari, Mohammed Saeed Badri, Mahmoud Tamer Ibrahim, Amer Ibrahim Mousa, Owen Ikina, Youssef Walid Abdelqader, and Shahi Mohammed. The Gulf U-18 Championship will be staged at Al-Gharafa Sports Hall, with five teams competing: Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman. The top three finishers will qualify directly for the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship, to be held in India in August 2026. The continental championship carries significant importance as it serves as the qualifying stage for the FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup, with the top four teams from Asia securing places in the global tournament, scheduled to take place in the Czech Republic.

 A report by the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), in partnership with the World Health Organisation, has attracted global attention, with leading international organisations discussing its contents at major forums. “We collaborated with WHO and came up with a landmark report called ‘In the line of Fire’, which talks about attack on health. Now this report in the last 18 months has been feeding the agenda at forums like the Human Rights Council in Geneva or WHO’s World Health Assembly,” Dr Sunoor Verma, director of Partnerships and Outreach, WISH, told the Gulf Times. Dr Sunoor said that WISH, a global healthcare initiative of Qatar Foundation, commissions reports on several important topics, which are then launched at every summit, and thereafter advocacy work is carried out around the world with WISH partners. “So that took us to Osaka, where Qatar Pavilion hosted us for a public-facing event to discuss the healthcare issues,” explained Dr Sunoor.“Then we convened in New York at the General Assembly to talk more specifically about what happens to humans and various diseases, when there is a humanitarian crisis, when there is an attack on health,” he said. The official said that there has been a drastic change in recent years in the fate of healthcare entities during conflicts or periods of geopolitical tension.“In earlier years, during a war or other conflicts, the moment there was any building or facilities associated with healthcare emergency, or an ambulance, nobody would touch it. Over the last 15-20 years or so, there has been a remarkable change, an unfortunate one, where these signs have become actually the primary targets so that you get populations to be displaced and move. So attacking health has become a tool in conflicts for warring parties,” he lamented. In the course of the last 14-15 years since its inception, Dr Sunoor said that WISH has commissioned a number of evidence-based reports.“I think the unique part about WISH is, it chooses what to report on. So these are either issues that are under the radar, or there are issues that are underfunded globally,” he noted. He said that all the reports WISH produces address issues that require urgent attention or dialogue, and that WISH has so far produced a large number of such reports. “As you see, health is not healthcare or medical science alone anymore. Health is at the intersection of things like urban planning, information technology, climate change, innovation among others. So health is now at an intersection of so many disciplines and all these determine the path of health. These reports are shaped accordingly and they can inform policymakers and then policymakers can advance the agenda,” underlined Dr Sunoor. The report ‘In the Line of Fire’ describes trends in global conflict, highlighting the scale and nature of attacks and their effects on population health.It speaks about protective mechanisms for the delivery of healthcare in armed conflict, setting out existing legal frameworks and accountability under International Humanitarian Law. It also underscores the need to build resilience and preparedness through capacity building, to explore protective measures through adaptive design, and to engage more effectively with armed forces and non-state actors. WISH will hold its 8th summit this year on November 29-30 under the theme ‘The New Health Span’ at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
