 Mikel Arteta has silenced his doubters by awakening sleeping giant Arsenal, restoring the Gunners to the top of English football.Twenty-two years on from Arsene Wenger's "Invincibles", Arsenal have finally got over the line to vindicate the Arteta project that began with his appointment back in 2019.Arsenal gambled on their former club captain six-and-a-half years ago even though he had no previous managerial experience. But Arteta was blessed with arguably the best apprenticeship, working alongside his long-time mentor turned title rival Pep Guardiola.When Guardiola arrived at Manchester City a decade ago, he sought out Arteta's experience of the English game and someone he knew from their playing days together at Barcelona."As a player and as a coach, he's been an inspiration for me, and he's the person who decided to bet on me, to include me as a second coach," Arteta said of Guardiola last year. "I'll always be grateful to him, otherwise I wouldn't be here."Yet in stark contrast to many other modern coaches, Arteta has not followed the Guardiola approach in building a side that has pipped his former boss to the title. Arteta never quite made the grade at Barcelona but the influences on his playing career have moulded his outlook as a manager.After brief spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Rangers, Arteta finally found a home at Everton under David Moyes. "I learned from him on the field and off the field about building a team and getting the right characters in the team to build what you want," Arteta said of Moyes.An Arsenal side built on solid defensive foundations, and propelled towards the title from their strength at set-pieces, bears more similarity to the Moyes playbook than Guardiola's philosophy.In his first meeting with the Arsenal hierarchy, Arteta reportedly presented a five-phase plan to drag the club back into contention at the top of the Premier League and in Europe. He quickly made his presence felt as seven players, including star names Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil, were unceremoniously let go as Arteta sought greater squad harmony.A FA Cup win just months after taking charge bought him time, but it took another six years for more silverware to arrive. In his first season, Arsenal finished eighth, their worst league finish for 25 years, and failed to improve on that in the Covid-affected 2020/2021 campaign.A year later they botched the chance to qualify for the Champions League after a long absence with a late collapse to finish fifth. Even when major progress resulted in three successive second-placed finishes, Arteta's ability to get Arsenal over the line was questioned.By building from the back he was often criticised for being too conservative and he has walked a fine line with his exuberant touchline antics. Even this season, many believed Arsenal had lost their way when they suffered four consecutive domestic defeats in March and April, ending their interest in the FA Cup and League Cup and allowing Manchester City back into the Premier League title race.But Arteta managed to right the ship this time to finish the campaign strongly, seeing off Guardola's men and moving to the brink of Arsenal's greatest-ever season. If they beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on May 30 they will be European champions for the first time."Sometimes when it is harder at the beginning then it is better so to see that transformation and the joy in the people," Arteta said ahead of Arsenal's final home game of the season against Burnley. "It's something that is beautiful to watch."Arsenal's nearly man finally has his moment to savour. 

Bukayo Saka said that Arsenal's critics were "not laughing at us anymore" as the club celebrated their first Premier League title in more than two decades.Gunners players and staff gathered at the club's London Colney training ground on Tuesday to watch closest challengers Manchester City draw 1-1 away to Bournemouth – a result which gave Arsenal an unassailable four-point lead at the top of the table with just Sunday's final round of matches remaining.As the Arsenal squad relished the club's first Premier League title since 2004, there were also joyous scenes at the north London side's Emirates Stadium, where thousands of supporters gathered to mark the occasion by lighting fireworks and flares.Arsenal, runners-up in the league for the previous three seasons, had faced accusations of "bottling" their title bid, with several observers questioning their temperament and ability to handle pressure following a 2-1 defeat at City on April 19.But while City subsequently drew at Everton and then at Bournemouth, Arsenal won their next four league games without conceding a goal. Arsenal's success meant Gunners boss Mikel Arteta joined a select group who've won English titles both as a player and manager.Arteta, who rejoined Arsenal as manager in December 2019 with the club in dire straits, installed a blacked-out Premier League trophy at Colney which would light up only when the Gunners won the title"Light that up," Saka said in footage posted by defender Jurrien Timber on his Instagram account. "Let me tell you something. Twenty-two years, 22 years. there was laughing, there was joking, they're not laughing anymore," the England international added. "Look, it is going to be shining, it is going to be shining bright."In an Instagram post, this time on Saka's channel, Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly was seen holding a champagne bottle. "They called us bottlers," said Lewis-Skelly who, like Saka, came through the club's Hale End Academy youth system. "And now we're holding the bottle."Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger featured in a celebratory post put out by his old side. The Frenchman, who won three Premier League titles with the Gunners, including the 2004 'Invincibles', said: "You did it. Champions go on when others stop. This is your time. Now, go on and enjoy every moment."City manager Pep Guardiola, who had Arteta as his assistant for two of the Manchester club's league titles, paid tribute to his fellow Spaniard. "On behalf of everyone at Manchester City, we congratulate Mikel and all the staff, players and fans on winning the Premier League," Guardiola said. "They deserve it, for so much hard work and effort."Arsenal will be presented with the Premier League trophy after their final match of the domestic season at Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Gunners could yet end the campaign with an impressive double when they go in search of their first Champions League title against Paris Saint-Germain in a Budapest final on May 30. Arsenal players in dawn celebrations after winning Premier LeagueMeanwhile, Arsenal players were pictured celebrating with fans at 5am at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday after they clinched the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber were pictured in the early hours in an Instagram post by their teammate Eberechi Eze. Thousands of fans had gathered outside the stadium while Manchester City, needing a win to keep the title race alive, played at Bournemouth. The crowd grew as Bournemouth took the lead and although City equalised in injury time, the draw meant the title was heading to North London. Some supporters marked the occasion by lighting fireworks and flares. The players held a party at their London Colney training ground with coach Mikel Arteta and then took the celebrations to the Emirates Stadium. Many of the players said the title win was especially sweet as they had finished runners-up for the past three seasons. Arsenal fans thronged around the stadium, hanging out of car windows and waving flags. Arsene Wenger, the French coach who was in charge when Arsenal won their last title in 2004, addressed the players in a video on the club's social media channels. "You did it! Champions go on when others stop. This is your time. Now, go on and enjoy every moment," Wenger said. Ian Wright, the striker who scored 185 times for Arsenal and was a member of the side that clinched the domestic double in 1998, was mobbed by fans as he celebrated outside the Emirates. Arteta's side will formally be presented with the trophy on Sunday after their final match of the season at Crystal Palace.  Then they will turn their attention to winning a Champions League title for the first time when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the final in Budapest on May 30.

Arsenal are on the brink of ending a 22-year wait to win the Premier League after beating Burnley 1-0 to open up a five-point lead at the top. Kai Havertz headed in the only goal but was also lucky to avoid a second-half red card that could swung the title race back in Manchester City's favour.The Gunners could be crowned champions as early as today should City fail to win at Bournemouth. Even if City do end the Cherries' 16-game unbeaten run and beat Aston Villa, Arsenal will secure the title with victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday.However, the narrow margin of victory against a Burnley side that have long since been relegated does offer City hope.An Arsenal draw at Selhurst Park would allow City to snatch the title on goal difference if Pep Guardiola's team win their final two matches. To add extra intrigue to the final days of the season, reports on Monday suggest Guardiola will leave City after a decorared decade in charge after Villa visit the Etihad on Sunday.Roared on by an expectant capacity crowd in their final home game of the season, Arsenal were tipped to put the Clarets to the sword with ease. Burnley have taken just two points from their last 10 matches but made Mikel Arteta's men work for the three points on another nervy night at the Emirates.Leandro Trossard struck the post from the edge of the area before Bukayo Saka saw a penalty appeal waived away as he attempted to turn in Havertz's low cross. Arsenal were forced to rely on their set piece threat once more to prise Burnley open.Havertz rose highest to power in Saka's delivery on 37 minutes as they scored from a corner for the 18th time in the league this season. Yet the floodgates did not open and Arsenal were very fortunate not to have to defend their lead with 10 men for the final quarter.Havertz raked his studs down the calf of Lesley Ugochukwu in a mistimed challenge. Despite a VAR review, the original decision of a yellow card was not upgraded to red.Havertz was quickly replaced by Viktor Gyokeres. The Swede's arrival failed to kickstart Arsenal as an attacking force. But their rock solid defensive record again edged them closer to the title. Since losing to City last month, Arsenal have not conceded in their last four league games.

Arsenal ended their 22-year wait to be crowned Premier League champions on Tuesday after Manchester City were held 1-1 by Bournemouth.City had to win to take the title fight to the final day, but the Cherries extended their unbeaten streak to 17 league games, a run which has secured European football for the first time in the club's history. After finishing second for the past three seasons, Mikel Arteta's Gunners have finally made it over the line to end a six-year trophy drought.Arsenal edged to the brink of the title with an unconvincing 1-0 win over already relegated Burnley on Monday, which took them five points clear of City. The Gunners, who have set the pace for most of the season, have bounced back impressively since losing to City last month, winning four straight league matches without conceding a goal. On Monday, just 48 hours after completing a domestic cup double with victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup final, City were rocked by widespread reports that manager Pep Guardiola will depart after a decade in charge at the end of the season. Victory at Wembley on Saturday secured a 20th trophy of Guardiola's glorious reign. But he cannot add to his six Premier League titles when Aston Villa visit the Etihad on Sunday for what is expected to be his final match in charge. Guardiola had warned that fatigue could cost City against a highly motivated Bournemouth, who still have Champions League qualification in their sights for next season. As it stands, Bournemouth will be in the Europa League after ensuring they will finish no lower than seventh. Sixth could be good enough for a place in the Champions League if Aston Villa finish fifth and win Wednesday's Europa League final. City fans forlornly chanted "One more year, Guardiola" in the early stages at the Vitality Stadium in a bid to convince their decorated coach to see out the final season of his contract. But if the travelling fans hoped City's players would be inspired to give Guardiola a glorious goodbye, they were left sorely disappointed. Antoine Semenyo had the ball in the net on his return to Bournemouth but was flagged offside in City's best moment of a flat first half.  The home side suddenly sprang to life to open the scoring in the 39th minute. Eli Junior Kroupi curled a brilliant strike into the top corner to set a new record of 13 goals in a debut Premier League season for a teenager. Nico O'Reilly wasted City's best chance of a lifeline when he was denied by Djordje Petrovic just seconds into the second half. Guardiola watched on pensively as his side's title challenge fizzled out with a whimper. After winning what was billed a title decider against Arsenal last month, City put the destiny of the title back in their rivals' hands by drawing 3-3 at Everton. Guardiola looks set to depart having failed to win the league for two consecutive seasons for the first time in his coaching career. Rayan and David Brooks hit the post as Bournemouth should have secured victory in Andoni Iraola's final home game in charge. Erling Haaland's equaliser deep into stoppage time came too little, too late to save City's title challenge. But it was a big goal for Liverpool, who now have a three-point cushion over Bournemouth and a goal difference advantage of six heading into the final day battle to secure a top-five finish and Champions League football.

Chelsea appointed Xabi Alonso as the club's manager on Sunday on a four-year deal from next season with the Spaniard the latest coach tasked with turning around the club's fortunes. The Blues lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City on Saturday and lie ninth in the Premier League with two games of the campaign to go. Alonso rose to prominence as one of Europe's brightest coaches by guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten German league and cup double in the 2023/24 season. However, he lasted just seven months in the Real Madrid hotseat. Appointed last year, he departed the Spanish giants in January. "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager of the men's team," Chelsea said in a statement. "The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge." Alonso faces a huge task to get Chelsea back in the running for major honours. Chelsea did win the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League last year but have little else to show for well over one billion pounds ($1.35 billion) of spending on players since US consortium BlueCo took over in 2022 following Roman Abramovich's trophy-laden ownership of the club. Defeat at Wembley on Saturday means they have now gone eight seasons without a domestic trophy. "Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club," said Alonso. "From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies. There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies." Fans have continuously protested against BlueCo, who have embarked on a scattergun approach to hoovering up young talent from across the globe. That policy has secured some notable successes such as England international Cole Palmer. But a lack of experience in both the playing squad and the coaching staff has been blamed for a lack of consistency. Alonso becomes the sixth permanent manager to take charge at Stamford Bridge in the past four years after Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior. Rosenior was sacked after less than four months in charge in April after Chelsea lost five consecutive league games without scoring for the first time since 1912. Interim boss Calum McFarlane guided them into the FA Cup final, but Chelsea are winless in seven league games and at risk of missing out on European football entirely next season. Alonso has a point to prove after a turbulent short spell in Madrid, but his arrival is a coup for Chelsea's much-criticised owners. Many Liverpool fans were desperate for him to return to Anfield, where he starred for five years as a player between 2004 and 2009, to succeed the under-fire Arne Slot.

  Bruno Fernandes equalled the Premier League record of 20 assists in a season as Manchester United secured third place with a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.Fernandes, who was recently crowned the football writers' player of the season, moved alongside Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne when his cross was turned in by Bryan Mbeumo for United's third goal. Mbeumo was also involved for the game's most controversial moment when his handball in the build up to Matheus Cunha's strike went unpunished despite a VAR review. "I want collective awards more than anything," said Fernandes. "But knowing that your job is being recognised by many people, a lot of players came out and said I was player of the season, for that I am very grateful. "I got to 20 today. We have one more game. The manager decides who will play the next game. I will be very happy to do it. But if I don't, I am already happy because it is the most assists I have got in the Premier League." Another victory added to United's impressive run since Michael Carrick took charge in January. The former midfielder is expected to sign a two-year deal to remain in charge at Old Trafford in the coming days. "We've had some big, big moments, big goals and big results in this place over the last few months," said Carrick in an end-of-season address to the United fans. "Hopefully there'll be a few more of them." Both sides had secured their principal targets in recent weeks with United set to return to the Champions League, while Forest only guaranteed survival last weekend. The low stakes made for a wide open contest that burst into life when Luke Shaw volleyed United in front after just five minutes. Both sides wasted plenty of chances for more goals before the break, but Forest did level just seven minutes into the second period. Elliot Anderson's inviting delivery was headed in at the back post by defender Morato. United raced down the other end and Cunha swept home after the ball rebounded off Mbuemo's thigh onto his arm. In an extremely rare occurrence, Michael Salisbury stood by his original decision to award the goal despite being called by VAR to review the incident. Fernandes' record-equalling moment arrived 14 minutes from time when Mbeumo prodded in his drilled cross for his first goal since February. Still Forest refused to go away as England internationals Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White combined to reduce the arrears. Gibbs-White, playing for the first time since suffering a horrendous facial injury in a clash with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez earlier this month, steered into the bottom corner from Anderson's driven cross.Casemiro was given a standing ovation on his final Old Trafford appearance when the Brazilian was replaced by Mason Mount nine minutes from time. And Fernandes was inches away from a record-breaking 21st assist of the campaign when Diogo Dalot hit the post from his pass deep into stoppage time. 

 West Ham's 3-1 defeat at Newcastle left Tottenham realistically only needing one more point to win the battle for Premier League survival, while Bruno Fernandes made history in Manchester United's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.Spurs can avoid dropping out of the English top flight for the first time in nearly 50 years with victory at Chelsea on Tuesday, but a draw would also likely suffice thanks to their much superior goal difference over West Ham.A third consecutive defeat left the Hammers needing favours and they were well beaten at St. James' Park against a Newcastle side who had little to play for. Nick Woltemade turned in Harvey Barnes' cross for his first league goal since December.William Osula then finished off a flowing Newcastle move to double the lead inside 20 minutes. Osula struck again with his fifth goal in six games and even a stunning strike from Taty Castellanos was little consolation for the visitors.West Ham's only hope of survival is if they beat Leeds on the final day and Tottenham lose to both Chelsea and Everton.Fernandes equalled the Premier League record of 20 assists in a season as United secured third place at Old Trafford. The Portuguese international moved alongside Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne in the single-season assist list when his cross was turned in by Bryan Mbeumo for United's third goal at Old Trafford.Luke Shaw volleyed United in front after just five minutes, but Forest levelled a wide open encounter early in the second half when Elliot Anderson's cross was headed in by Morato. United raced down the other end and Matheus Cunha's goal was allowed to stand despite a VAR check for handball by Mbeumo in the build-up.Fernandes' record-equalling moment arrived 14 minutes from full-time when Mbeumo prodded in his drilled cross for his first goal since February. Morgan Gibbs-White reduced the deficit in the 78th minute.But United held on to add another victory to their impressive run since interim boss Michael Carrick arrived in January. Carrick is expected to sign a two-year contract to remain in charge on a permanent basis. "Over the coming days there'll be clarity in the situation," the former United midfielder said of his future.Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal in stoppage-time at Elland Road as Leeds beat Brighton 1-0 to damage the Seagulls' hopes of European qualification.Brentford, in eighth place, also suffered a blow to their European ambitions in a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace. Ismaila Sarr's sixth-minute penalty put Palace ahead before Dango Ouattara hauled Brentford level in the 40th minute. Adam Wharton restored Palace's advantage with his first goal for the club in the 52nd minute, but Ouattara struck again in the 88th minute.Sunderland are also in contention for European qualification after a 3-1 win at Everton lifted the Black Cats up to ninth. Fulham slipped to 13th after a 1-1 draw at relegated Wolves hampered their chances of Europe next season.Earlier, troubled Chelsea hired Xabi Alonso as their new manager, less than 24 hours after losing 1-0 against Manchester City in the FA Cup final. Alonso, who agreed a four-year contract with 10th-placed Chelsea, led Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024 but was sacked by Real Madrid in January after just seven months in charge. 

Jeremy Doku’s stoppage-time strike salvaged Manchester City a 3-3 draw at Everton, but a second half collapse handed the destiny of the Premier League title back to Arsenal last night. The Gunners now just need to win their final three games to end a 22-year wait to become the champions of England. City remain five points adrift of Mikel Arteta’s team, with a game in hand, and will struggle to recover from the manner of their implosion at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side appeared to be cruising to victory when Doku opened the scoring at the end of a dominant first half. However, an error-strewn second period was punished as Thierno Barry scored twice for the Toffees, either side of Jake O’Brien’s header. Erling Haaland and then a sensational effort from Doku in the 96th minute did however rescue a point which could ultimately keep City in the race. Arsenal visit relegation-threatened West Ham on Sunday before hosting Burnley and visiting Crystal Palace on the final day of the campaign. Two Arsenal victories since City last played in the league had ramped up the pressure on Guardiola’s side. City’s first team had gone the best part of two weeks without a proper outing after Guardiola heavily rotated for last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final win over Southampton. The visitors looked fresh rather than rusty as Everton were penned back inside their own box for practically the entire first half. City’s pressure finally found its reward two minutes before half-time when Rayan Cherki found Doku, who curled a shot into Jordan Pickford’s top right-hand corner. Things could have been even worse for the Toffees before the break as Michael Keane escaped with just a yellow card for a wild lunge on Doku. That decision proved to be vital as City paid a heavy price for a serious of basic defensive errors. Twice Guardiola’s men did not heed a warning that an Everton equaliser was coming. Gianluigi Donnarumma parried Iliman Ndiaye’s effort back into the danger area but Merlin Rohl was not alive to the rebound. Ndiaye then had a glorious chance after an error from Matheus Nunes but again could not beat the giant Italian in the City goal. When the equaliser finally arrived, City were again architects of their own downfall. Marc Guehi’s underhit passback handed Barry the simple task of slotting past the stranded Donnarumma. Another casual City mistake moments later led to Everton’s second. This time Abdukodir Khusanov was caught in possession by Ndiaye and bailed out by a last-ditch challenge from Guehi. But from the resulting corner, O’Brien rose highest to power home a header. Barry prodded home a third for Everton from Rohl’s deflected cross with City all at sea from a rapid counter-attack. Within seconds they had a lifeline, though, as straight from kick-off Mateo Kovacic played in Haaland to halve the arrears. Doku delivered a dagger to Everton’s hopes of European football next season right at the death. But it may have come too little, too late to rescue City’s chances of a seventh title in nine years. 

KL Rahul topped the Indian Premier League run-scoring charts with a match-winning knock in Delhi Capitals’ seven-wicket win over Rajasthan ‌Royals on Friday, saying individual milestones mean ​more when they ‌help the team win. Rahul has been Delhi’s ‌most consistent performer ‌this season, registering three ‌half-centuries and one century despite the team’s mixed results. The 34-year-old struck 75 off 40 balls, with six fours and five sixes, as Delhi snapped a three-match losing streak and completed their highest successful run chase of 226 in the IPL. Rahul had earlier hit an unbeaten 152 in ​a defeat against Punjab Kings, a knock that drew praise but did not bring the desired result for the ‌team. “After playing for so many years, ​numbers do matter,” Rahul said at the ​post-match presentation. “You’re happy that you score runs and you score these big runs and break records. “But if you don’t get the win after the game, it’s not as much fun,” he said, Rahul has been in strong form this season and he credited it to work on maintaining a higher strike rate to suit ‌the demands of ‌modern day Twenty20 cricket. While he is enjoying a good run in the tournament, he acknowledged that Delhi had slipped up in key moments despite pushing hard in earlier games. “This competition and T20 cricket doesn’t allow you a second chance,” he said. “So it was important that we take our chances ​and when we’re ahead, really press hard and finish the game, which we weren’t doing.” Delhi were also boosted by the return of Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who took three wickets in his first match of the season after months on the sidelines with elbow and shoulder injuries. Sixth-placed Delhi ‌next face ​Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday. 

Scott Parker has left his position as head coach of Burnley by mutual consent following the club's relegation from the Premier League, it was announced Thursday.Burnley said in a statement that Parker and the board had "mutually agreed that his time at Turf Moor would conclude" following one season back in the English top division.Parker led the Clarets to promotion last year but this season has been a struggle, with just four league wins in total.Burnley's fate was confirmed on April 22 after a 1-0 home defeat by Manchester City, two days after Wolves were relegated.Parker, who has previously managed Fulham, Bournemouth and Belgian side Club Brugge, signed a three-year contract in July 2024, succeeding Vincent Kompany.He oversaw a remarkable 2024/25 season in the Championship, which included a 31-match unbeaten run and 30 clean sheets, taking them back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.But Burnley have conceded 68 goals in 34 league matches in the current campaign, the most of any side, and were knocked out of the FA Cup and League Cup by third-tier teams."The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Scott for his professionalism, dedication and contribution," Burnley said in a statement."He leaves with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected with Burnley Football Club."Former England midfielder Parker, 45, said in a statement on the club's website that it had been an "immense privilege" to lead Burnley."I have enjoyed every moment of our journey together, but feel that now is the right time for both parties to move in a different direction," he said."I reflect back with great pride on what we achieved during my time at the club, especially our unforgettable promotion season in 2024/25, and it was a true honour to lead this team into the Premier League."The club said Parker's assistant, Mike Jackson, would take charge for the club's four remaining Premier League fixtures, beginning with Friday's match at Leeds United.It said the process of appointing a new permanent head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season had begun. 

Mired in a four-match losing streak, Mumbai Indians needed something special to revitalise their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign ‌and batter Tilak Varma duly delivered with ​an unbeaten century ‌in Monday’s win over Gujarat Titans. The middle-order ‌batter smashed 101 off ‌45 balls to lead the ‌five-time champions to a 99-run win that hauled them off the bottom of the table and up to seventh in the 10-team league. Varma’s previous best this season was 20 and the 23-year-old said he had struck form at just the right time. “The first hundred will always be special - and to ​be honest, it was very important for us,” he added. “We don’t have much time from here. Every game is important ‌for us.” Batting at number five, Varma ​collected 19 from his first 22 balls ​before racing to his first IPL hundred in just 45 balls. After going five innings without a six, he launched seven against a potent Gujarat attack that included Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan. “In the last five games, I haven’t spent much time in the middle. So I was just thinking that in this game, I ‌want to spend time ‌in the middle,” he said. “If you see the first 20 balls, I was just going ball-by-ball. Later on, once I had faced a few balls, I knew what I am capable of. “I was stable, keeping my head still and following my basics. I’ve got all the fancy shots - when the team needs, ​I can use that.” Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya, who played a largely support role in an 81-run stand with Varma, never doubted his teammate’s talent. “The only thing I kept telling him (was) - you’re goint to just watch the ball and hit the ball because I genuinely believe the kind of (way the) ball travels from his ‌bat is ​something really special,” Pandya said.
