This weekend’s Qatar International Baja will go a long way to determining the outcome of the various racing categories in both the FIA World and Middle East Baja Cups. The Lusail-based event hosts the penultimate rounds of both championships with the Dubai International Baja set to round off the respective race calendars the following weekend (November 5th-8th). The Drivers’ and Navigators’ Championships in the FIA World Baja Cup are set for a barn-storming conclusion with four drivers present in Qatar in with a very realistic chance of claiming the silverware. Saudi driver Dania Akeel leads the way on 273 points but the Toyota driver has already scored from her permitted six events and sits on the sidelines for the season’s finale, as Mitchel van den Brink, Francisco Barreto, Lionel Baud and Saood Variawa battle it out for the title. Van den Brink, Barreto and Variawa have posted four scores so far to the five notched up by Baud. Van den Brink is the runaway leader of the Challenger category as well and heads to Lusail in his South Racing Can-Am with 265 points and a seven-point cushion over Barreto, the winner in both Italy and Portugal this year in an SVR Toyota. Baud is the outsider and trails Van den Brink by 18 points but Jordan Baja winner Variawa is 33 points adrift and, more importantly, has two Bajas still to complete. Barreto, Baud and Variawa will also battle it out to overhaul Akeel in the Ultimate class. Akeel’s partner Sébastien Delaunay leads the way in the Navigators’ Championship, but is also absent as Bart van Heun, Paulo Fiúza and Lucie Baud tussle for supremacy. Lionel Baud leads the way from Hamed al-Wahaibi in the Master driver category. Van den Brink’s cushion over Al-Wahaibi is 60 points in the Challenger section. Al-Wahaibi returns from a freak leg injury to try and push R-X Sport on to Teams’ glory as well, but needs Van den Brink to falter on at least one of the last two Bajas if he is to prevail. The QMMF Team’s Abdulaziz al-Kuwari is a distant third in the rankings, while Van Heun leads the way from Maciej Giemza in the Navigators’ category. **media[509428]**Neither SSV and Junior Driver leader Hedda Hosås nor Emirati Mansour al-Helai have made the trip to Qatar and that has opened the door for Argentina-based Fernando Alvarez to push on for glory. The Can-Am driver trails Hosås by 33 points with one score in hand. His navigator Xavier Panseri is in a similar position in the battle for the Navigators’ series. Al-Mashna al-Shammeri has already posted six scores this season and amassed 226 points in the Stock category. He must sit on the sidelines to see if fellow Nissan driver Majed al-Thunayyan can finish the event and snatch the title in Qatar. The outcome of the FIA Middle East Baja Cup looks to be a lot more straightforward. Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah and Max Delfino have already taken wins in Saudi Arabia and Jordan this year and have 17-point leads in their respective championships over the absent Yasir Seaidan and Xavier Flick. Al-Attiyah will be one of the favourites for outright success in an MD Optimus Rallye – he has won the Qatar event in its various guises on a dozen occasions since 2004. Talented young Qatari Mohammed al-Marri leads the Junior rankings, holds third in the Drivers’ Championship and has a 58-point lead in the SSV class. He teams up with Pierre Delorme on this occasion, knowing that a strong finish in Qatar will be enough to see off the challenge from the likes of Hamad al-Harbi, Maha al-Hamali and Mohammed al-Atteya to claim SSV success. Seaidan’s absence has left the door slightly ajar for Dubai-based Briton David Mabbs and his navigator Dave McBride to make a late push for Challenger honours. Mabbs trails Seaidan by 68 points and faces strong Qatari competition for points this weekend. He is also in contention for the regional Master Driver title, but trails the absent Miroslav Zapletal by 37 points. On Tuesday there will be a day of pre-event preparations in the service park for teams and crews, while staff at the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) put the finishing touches to event logistics before administration checks, scrutineering and the pre-event press conference take centre stage at the Lusail International Circuit on Wednesday.

The Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC) has concluded its 2026 training programme on international commercial courts, featuring lectures, panel discussions and applied workshops on relevant legislation.  The program highlighted the procedures and practices of QICDRC and the Regulatory Tribunal of the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), bringing together 25 qualified lawyers and legal practitioners who gained practical insights into the legal frameworks and procedural rules governing court proceedings and appeals before the court’s appellate division.  It covered the key stages of litigation, including emergency motions, commencement of proceedings, defences and counterclaims, jurisdictional disputes, disclosure and case preparation, hearings and evidence, judgments, court orders and damages, costs and enforcement, appeals, and proceedings before the regulatory tribunal.  By reviewing pending and previously heard cases, participants deepened their understanding of court procedures, including oral argument, legal analysis and litigation strategy. The sessions also addressed ethical and procedural issues confronting attorneys practicing before international commercial courts.  QICDRC CEO Faisal bin Rashid al-Sahouti said the programme underscored the court’s commitment to legal practitioners’ professional development and familiarising them with established court procedures. He said this knowledge helps expedite litigation, saving time and effort for litigants and judges while substantially improving court efficiency and access to justice.  QICDRC continues to offer professional development and knowledge-building initiatives to strengthen legal skills, promote international best practices and advance the State of Qatar’s legal community. 

MotoGP will forge ahead with next month’s Qatar Grand Prix despite Middle East tensions and concerns from some riders over safety, while others said they trusted organisers Dorna to ensure the race could be staged safely. The race at the Lusail International Circuit, originally scheduled for April but postponed to November 6-8 due to the regional conflict, remains on the calendar for what would be the 20th round of the season. Several sports events in Saudi Arabia, including the Saudi International golf tournament, the Urban Cycling World Championships and the FIFAe World Cup, were scrapped earlier this month after a strike on Riyadh’s international airport killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 300. Earlier this week, the US State Department ordered some diplomats and family members to depart from its missions in Saudi Arabia and plans to withdraw family members from a number of other US missions in the region. However, a MotoGP source told Reuters the Qatar Grand Prix remains on the calendar and preparations continue, adding that the safety and well-being of everyone involved was their first priority. Gresini Racing’s Alex Marquez, who finished runner-up in the championship last season, voiced scepticism about whether safety could truly be guaranteed in such a volatile environment. “Every day, it (the situation) changes and every day it looks worse. That’s how it is,” the Spaniard said ahead of this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix. “The championship tells us that everything is under control, but I think nobody has a situation like that under control. It’s quite complex. From one day to the next, everything can change a lot, and I think it’s not a decision they should make now. They should be realistic and wait for the next few days.” Formula One is also planning to host the season’s last two races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi as planned, with International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Mohammed Ben Sulayem saying the situation was currently “fine” in the region. Liberty Media, which acquired the F1 commercial rights in 2017, took over MotoGP’s parent company Dorna in 2024. While the Formula One championship could be wrapped up before the final two races of the season — with Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli holding a 102-point lead — the MotoGP title race remains razor-tight after 17 of the 22 rounds. Aprilia’s Jorge Martin holds a two-point lead over Ducati’s reigning champion Marc Marquez ahead of this weekend’s action at the Phillip Island Circuit. “I want to go to Qatar because the circuit is incredible. I believe in the championship and in what those who manage it decide,” Martin said. “Nobody has said we’re not going. It’s just another race. If we go, great. If not, that’s fine too. If the organisers decide we can go, it’ll be because our safety is guaranteed.”The Qatar Grand Prix has been a near-constant fixture on the MotoGP calendar since its debut in 2004, with the only interruption coming in 2020 when the race was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Doha on Saturday hosted the 50th Congress of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), bringing together representatives of member national associations to discuss hockey’s development and governance and strengthen cooperation across the sport. Addressing the Congress, H.E. Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), welcomed delegates and described the 50th edition as a significant milestone in the Federation’s history, reflecting years of work, leadership and a shared vision that have advanced hockey and expanded its global reach. He said that building on this legacy requires creating greater opportunities for future generations, stressing that success in sport is measured not only by the events organised, but also by the opportunities created for athletes and generations to come, a responsibility shared across the Olympic Movement. He added that Qatar’s hosting of international sporting events goes beyond welcoming participants from around the world to building strong partnerships and creating a lasting impact that continues long after an event. HE Jassim al-Buenain said that progress in sport also depends on how widely its benefits are shared, requiring close cooperation between international federations, national Olympic committees and everyone working to develop sport, while keeping athletes at the heart of every decision. For his part, FIH President Tayyab Ikram thanked Qatar and the QOC for hosting the 50th Congress and praised the support of HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, President of QOC and President of the Olympic Council of Asia, for hockey and for hosting the international gathering in Doha. Ikram commended Qatar’s role in bringing the international sporting community together and promoting peace and understanding among nations through sport, highlighting the importance of this role amid the challenges facing the region and the world. He said the Congress offered an opportunity to celebrate hockey’s journey and shape its future through dialogue and the exchange of views among national associations on the Federation’s strategic framework and priorities for the coming period, while keeping athletes at the heart of these efforts and strengthening hockey’s contribution to the Olympic Movement. During the Congress, Ikram announced that the President’s Award would be presented to HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani in recognition of his support for hockey. He also honoured the QOC and HE Jassim bin Rashid al-Buenain for their support for the sport and for hosting the 50th FIH Congress. The programme began on 21 October with an FIH Executive Board meeting. On 23 October, it featured the National Associations Forum and the FIH Awards Ceremony, including the announcement of the FIH Hockey Stars Awards 2026 winners. The National Associations Forum focused on two main topics: the International Olympic Committee’s “Fit for the Future” initiative and the new FIH strategic framework. Discussions enabled participants to exchange expertise and perspectives on the changing international sporting landscape and priorities for hockey’s development and global growth. Doha’s hosting of the event reflects Qatar’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with international sports federations, contributing to the development of the Olympic Movement and providing a platform for sporting leaders to exchange expertise and discuss the future of sport. 

A late thrilling strike from Angolan forward Gelson Dala saw Al Wakrah stage a stunning comeback and beat Al Arabi 3-2 in their round seven match of the Qatar Stars League (QSL) at the Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday.In the second game, Al Duhail scored twice in stoppage time to beat Lusail 3-1 in a dramatic tie at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium.The result saw Al Duhail move into the top three with 15 points to their credit and tied with second-placed Al Sadd. Al Rayyah are at the top with 17 points, Al Arabi now fourth with 12 points and Al Wakrah fifth with 11 points.Dala scored the winner for The Blue Wave in the 88th minute after Amin Zahzouh had equalized in 83rd minute, and Nasser al-Yazidi scored their opening goal in the 69th minute.For Al Arabi, Michael Olunga had scored both their goals in the 38th and 45th minute.Dala made a fine run after picking on a Luis Alberto assist to go on and score. The linesman had raised the flag as Dala scored but VAR later green signalled the goal for Al Wakrah.Earlier, Al Wakrah fought back from being two goals down after the break.Zahzouh essayed a fine diagonal kick from a Murad Naji cross for the equalizer. The attacking Moroccan player struck from right of the box, sending the ball through defenders and beating the goalkeeper hollow in the left corner.Zahzouh prior to scoring had provided al-Yazidi with a fine cross to make a successful header.Al Arabi seemed to be sitting pretty when Olunga first made a header and later deflected in an Isaac Lihaji cross but they lost the plot in the second session.In 90+11 minute, Al Arabi’s Alexis Perez received a red card for violent conduct.At the start of the second half, Al Arabi’s Marwan Sherif suffered an injury as he fell face down and had to be wheeled off. Additional 15 minutes were added to the match at the end.It was Al Wakrah’s third win of the league and provided them with the three valuable points, while the first setback for Al Arabi. Late scare for DuhailLusail, coached by Emanuel Mesquita, appeared to have earned a valuable point when Rodrigo Moreno levelled the score in the 89th minute against Al Duhail after Qatar international Almoez Ali had put the Red Knights ahead in the 40th minute.Al Duhail, however, responded in style as Boubakary Soumare restored the lead in the 4th minute of added time, before Ali sealed full points with his second goal of the night deep into stoppage time.The result lifted Al Duhail in the standings, building on their win over Al Sadd in the previous round and keeping them in the title race. Lusail remained on six points.Belmadi’s men will now look to carry the momentum forward, while Mesquita’s team must regroup quickly after seeing a hard-earned point slip away in the dying minutes.Lusail will be looking to return to winning ways and secure a positive result against Al Sailiya next Saturday in the eighth round of the league. The match will take place at Suheim bin Hamad Stadium at 5:15 PM. 

MES Indian School, Abu Hamour Branch (MESIS), honoured Adeeb Yacoob Koiloth of Grade XII for winning the bronze medal at the Al-Farghani International Physics Olympiad 2026, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, representing Qatar.The Olympiad brought together 107 secondary school students from 15 countries and territories, with each national delegation comprising up to five students and two team leaders.Eligible participants were secondary school students aged under 20.The competition featured two five-hour examination rounds on separate days: a theoretical round with three problems worth 60 points and a practical/experimental round worth 40 points, totalling 100 points.The celebration was graced by principal Pramila Kannan and vice-principal Shamjida Shajith, along with Koiloth’s parents, teachers, and students.The MESIS fraternity applauded his dedication, perseverance, and passion for learning.The school management and principal congratulated Koiloth and encouraged students to strive for excellence.His achievement has brought immense pride to the school, adding another feather to MESIS's cap. 

 Qatar Airways yesterday announced the next phase of its expansion in Australia, with plans to launch direct passenger services between Hamad International Airport and Western Sydney International Airport from 15 December 2027.  Western Sydney becomes Qatar Airways’ seventh gateway in Australia, alongside Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra.  The new route will initially be served by three weekly flights using the airline’s Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with 42 Business Class and 312 Economy Class seats. Passengers will also be able to enjoy Starlink Wi-Fi free of charge.  The new route will complement the broader growth plans of the Qatar Airways-Virgin Australia partnership across Australia, supporting additional network development opportunities and enhanced access to international destinations for Australian travellers.  Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Hamad al-Khater, said: “Our launch at Western Sydney International is the next chapter in our long-standing partnership with Australia, one of our most important markets.  “The new route will link Western Sydney directly with Doha and, through Hamad International Airport, with more than 170 destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and beyond, strengthening existing ties and creating new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment between Australia, Qatar and the wider world,” he added.  

 Participants at the Doha International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Security (Doha-AIS) 2026 have called for the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into internal security systems.  During a panel discussion, titled “A Global Approach to Ethics, Governance, and Responsible AI”, speakers emphasised the need to improve the ability to predict and respond to cyber threats, in order to keep pace with the rapidly evolving security risks worldwide.  Aisha al-Asmakh, a researcher at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, presented a vision for strengthening the security of maritime infrastructure in the State of Qatar, through integrating renewable energy sources with AI technologies to protect offshore gas platforms, pipelines, and subsea communication networks.  Al-Asmakh presented a model for a wind-powered offshore platform designed to supply energy to unmanned maritime vehicles, incorporating intelligent monitoring systems powered by clean energy. The model is intended to enable the early detection of security threats and improve response times.  She said the study’s findings showed that integrating renewable energy with AI could improve maritime operations, energy management and real-time decision-making. She also called for the development of a national AI platform capable of supporting both civilian and security applications.  For his part, Sami Salem, Government and Public Sector associate at PwC, emphasised that adopting an AI-driven approach to national security offers strategic advantages. These include the ability to anticipate crises early, accelerate the transition from threat detection to decisive action, enhance co-ordination among relevant national entities, and build institutional capacity to address future challenges.  Meanwhile, Shawq al-Qahtani, Senior Information Security Assurance Engineer at beIN Media Group, discussed the challenges of maintaining control over AI systems and the importance of technological sovereignty as these systems become increasingly capable of moving beyond providing answers to executing actions.  Al-Qahtani stressed the need for robust governance of intelligent technologies, effective data controls, clearly defined access rights and privileges, decision traceability, and mechanisms to ensure data recoverability. Such measures, she said, are essential to strengthening the security and reliability of AI systems.  

The Foreign Policy Association (FPA) has honoured His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in recognition of his pioneering role in mediation and international diplomacy. At a special ceremony held in New York, Her Excellency Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani received the medal on behalf of HH the Amir.The event was attended by FPA President and CEO Noel Lateef, FPA Vice-Chairman Sana Sabbagh, members of the association's board of directors, and other prominent figures.In his welcoming remarks, FPA President and CEO Noel Lateef expressed his profound appreciation to HH the Amir for accepting the medal, noting that the honour recognises HH the Amir's pioneering leadership and significant contributions to advancing international peace and security.He also praised HH the Amir's steadfast commitment to mediation, dialogue and diplomatic engagement as cornerstones of Qatar's foreign policy, as well as his efforts to strengthen multilateral co-operation at the regional and international levels. In remarks delivered on behalf of the association's president and board of directors, FPA Vice-Chairman Sana Sabbagh expressed the association's pride in awarding the medal to HH the Amir and extended her appreciation to the State of Qatar for its significant role in advancing peace.She also praised HH the Amir's leadership and steadfast commitment to dialogue and to preserving prospects for peaceful co-operation amid profound global uncertainty stemming from numerous political developments. Sabbagh said the occasion reaffirmed the association's conviction that diplomacy demands patience, perseverance and a genuine willingness to engage in dialogue and exchange views despite differences -- principles fundamental to advancing peace and forging stronger ties among nations committed to peace.In her acceptance remarks, HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani conveyed His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani's appreciation to the Foreign Policy Association for the honour, noting that for more than a century, the association has championed the principle that an informed public is a cornerstone of international responsibility.She added that, under HH the Amir's leadership, Qatar has continued to play a pivotal role on the international stage, consolidating its standing as an internationally recognised mediator and a steadfast advocate of efforts to spare nations the ravages of war and violence. She underscored that investing in human capital through education has been central to this approach, reflecting a vision that HH the Amir has pursued since assuming the reins of power in June 2013.Her Excellency underscored that, under HH the Amir's leadership, Qatar's foreign policy is guided by the principles of peaceful dispute resolution, respect for international law and the protection of civilians, underpinned by the firm conviction that no conflict is beyond the reach of dialogue.She also highlighted Qatar's continued efforts to strengthen its standing as a global hub for investment, technology, energy, education and sports, underscoring the country's openness to the world and its resolve to deepen partnerships with the international community.HE Sheikha Alya said Qatar's approach to mediation rests on two fundamental principles. The first is that mediation must be guided by a clear objective: achieving sustainable peace and laying the foundations for its long-term preservation. This approach has established Qatar as an impartial and trusted mediator, earning the confidence of parties to conflicts, including those who may distrust all other parties. The second principle, she stressed, is that peace without reconstruction is merely a temporary truce, not genuine peace.She underscored Qatar's contribution to helping countries emerge from conflict, lay the foundations for sustainable peace and avert a relapse into war through its development and humanitarian efforts. In this context, she cited several examples of Qatar's mediation and peacebuilding efforts in Afghanistan, Gaza, Darfur, Chad and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, among other regions. Addressing the latest regional developments, Her Excellency noted that Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states had faced serious challenges in the wake of Iran's unlawful attacks and its obstruction of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, in flagrant violation of international law.She stressed that Qatar had condemned the attacks and exercised its inherent right to self-defence. Despite these circumstances, Qatar, under HH the Amir's leadership, had continued to support Pakistan-led mediation efforts to facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran.
