Qatar participated in the High-Level Segment of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), held in Yerevan, Armenia, on October 27-28.The segment was held as part of the 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference, hosted by Armenia from October 19 to 30.Qatar was represented at the meeting by HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie. In his address, HE the Minister said biodiversity conservation and the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems are key national priorities, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030. He noted that terrestrial protected areas cover around 27% of Qatar's land area. By 2030, the country aims to protect 30% of its terrestrial and marine areas and restore 30% of natural habitats. HE the Minister underscored the significance of the current conference, which marks the first global review of collective progress in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Qatar hopes the discussions will yield concrete measures to accelerate the fulfillment of international commitments and deliver measurable national results, he said. He added that Qatar had aligned its national priorities with the framework’s goals and targets, integrated biodiversity objectives into its development plans, and translated its international commitments into specific national programs subject to monitoring and evaluation. Qatar had also recently updated its national biodiversity targets and prepared the general framework for its National Biodiversity Strategy, he said. Work is underway to finalize the strategy and its accompanying national action plan, which will define national priorities, establish implementation programs and set measurable indicators to track progress. HE the Minister outlined the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change's efforts, in cooperation with national entities, research institutions, universities and the private sector, to conserve ecosystems and protect wildlife. These initiatives include monitoring whale sharks, protecting dugongs, and safeguarding and rehabilitating meadows and other natural sites. He said these efforts covered 76 meadows and natural sites between 2019 and 2026, noting that Qatar aims to protect and rehabilitate 500 sites by 2030. At the international level, HE the Minister called for increased funding for biodiversity conservation, stronger support for capacity-building and the transfer of appropriate technologies, and greater consideration of the specific needs of developing countries, particularly those with arid and hyper-arid climates. He also called for closer international cooperation in sharing scientific and technical data and expertise, as well as for biodiversity considerations to be integrated into development policies and plans. He stressed that concerted global action is essential to achieving the targets set out in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. HE the Minister reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to strengthening national biodiversity conservation efforts, supporting international action to accelerate implementation of the global framework, and preserving natural resources for future generations. 

A car drove into a group of people late Monday in Neustadt am Rubenberge, in northwestern Germany, injuring several people.Four to five people were injured, some seriously, but none sustained life-threatening injuries, a police spokesperson said Tuesday.A nearby police patrol conducting a routine traffic check intervened, and officers fired shots at the vehicle during the incident, the spokesperson said. The car's occupants fled and remain at large.The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Police were searching for those involved, deploying additional officers and a helicopter, according to media reports. 

 The Academic Bridge Programme (ABP), part of Qatar Foundation’s (QF) Pre-University Education, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), a QF partner university, is to host the ‘Building Bridges to Higher Education: Advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Readiness and Global Competence’ forum.  The forum will take place on November 14, under the patronage of Qatar’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education, and in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). Registration is open until November 7 at https://qatar-weill.cornell.edu/event/fpf  The one-day forum will explore practical strategies to help teachers and academic counsellors guide students toward educational pathways that align with their abilities and aspirations, while encouraging greater interest in STEM, as well as medical and healthcare fields.  Participants will also gain insights into university admission requirements, preparatory programmes, and the skills needed to succeed in higher education. The forum will address challenges students may face during their transition to university and explore ways to prepare them academically and personally for this important stage. 

 Thirty-two second-year medical students from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) completed biomedical summer research projects at elite international institutions in Qatar, the US and the UK.  The projects are part of the college’s Advanced Biomedical Sciences Research (ABSR) elective course, which offers students who have completed the first year of the medical curriculum the opportunity to pursue a personal scholarly experience in biomedical science.  The elective is open to students who wish to graduate with honours in research or who otherwise are interested in developing their scientific investigation and clinical research skills.  This student-initiated programme invites students to submit research proposals for consideration, develop working relationships with prospective mentors and secure invitations to visit and collaborate on research projects.The eight-week programme offers a variety of experiences, including clinical research, laboratory research, social science projects, public health projects, and other translational projects.  The majority of this year’s cohort of participating students were awarded the Medical Student Research Award (MSRA), which is provided by the WCM-Q Research Division, to support their travel.The students spent the summer working on research projects in orthopaedics, neurology, oncology, haematology, immunology, and endocrinology, among others, with placements at specialised centres at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, New York-Presbyterian, the University of Oxford, and WCM-Q.  Student Abdulla al-Mutawa spent the summer at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York in the laboratory of Dr Shahin Rafii, founding director of the Hartman Institute for Therapeutic Organ Regeneration, the Arthur B Belfer Professor of Genetic Medicine, chief of the Division of Regenerative Medicine in the Department of Medicine and director of the Ansary Stem Cell Institute, learning how to preserve the diverse phenotype of mesenchymal stromal cells through modulation of TGF-ß signalling.  Student Luai Hommos joined Dr Mootaz Salman, associate professor of neurobiology, in his lab at the University of Oxford to investigate blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity in mouse models of induced synucleinopathy.Parkinson’s disease and other synucleinopathies are increasingly linked to early breakdown of the BBB, which may serve as a diagnostic marker before clinical symptoms appear.  Dr Nayef Mazloum, associate professor of microbiology and immunology, and associate dean for student research at WCM-Q, said: “This year’s cohort of students has shown a consistent commitment to strengthening their research skills, and I am extremely proud of everything they have achieved over the summer.” 

Qatar Chamber and Senegal’s Investment Promotion Agency discussed trade and economic cooperation as well as ways to strengthen partnerships between the business communities of both countries, and investment opportunities available in the Senegalese market, particularly in the sectors of energy, oil and gas, mining, agriculture, food industries, tourism, and digital technology. It also reviewed preparations for the “Dakar-Doha Day” event, scheduled to take place in Doha next December.  This came as first vice-chairman of Qatar Chamber Mohammed bin Ahmed bin Twar al-Kuwari met with a business delegation from the Republic of Senegal headed by Director General of Senegal’s Investment Promotion and Major Projects Agency (APIX) Bakary Sega Bathily, and including Investment Director at APIX Habibatou. The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Senegal to the State of Qatar Cheikh Tidiane Sall.  Al-Kuwari stressed the importance of strengthening economic and trade relations between Qatar and Senegal, noting that such meetings help open new avenues of cooperation between the private sectors of both countries, explore available investment opportunities, and establish mutually beneficial trade and investment partnerships.  He praised the initiative to organize “Dakar-Doha Day,” describing it as an opportunity to showcase Senegal’s economy and highlight investment opportunities available to Qatari investors, while also providing a platform for direct meetings between businesspeople and companies from both countries.  Ambassador of the Republic of Senegal to Qatar Cheikh Tidiane Sall affirmed his country’s keenness to strengthen economic and investment relations with Qatar. He noted that organizing “Dakar-Doha Day” represents an important step toward introducing the Qatari business community to promising opportunities in Senegal and encouraging new partnerships between companies and institutions in both countries.He explained that the Senegalese side is looking forward to organizing the event on December 7.  The event is expected to be attended by representatives of Senegalese government entities and the private sector.The Ambassador also noted Senegal’s interest in hosting a future edition of the Qatar-Africa Business Forum, which would help strengthen economic ties between Qatar and African countries and expand opportunities for trade and investment cooperation.  Meanwhile, Director General of Senegal’s APIX Bakary Sega Bathily expressed his country’s interest in enhancing economic and investment cooperation with Qatar. He highlighted Senegal’s diverse economic potential and natural resources, which offer promising opportunities for Qatari investors across various sectors.  He explained that priority sectors include agriculture, food industries, energy, mining, tourism, and digital technology. He noted that Senegal possesses significant resources of phosphate, iron, and gold, and seeks to develop processing industries that capitalize on these resources and natural gas production, with the aim of meeting domestic market needs and expanding into international markets.  Investment director at APIX Habibatou said that the agency works to promote investment opportunities across various sectors of the Senegalese economy and facilitate communication between foreign investors, government entities, and the Senegalese private sector. 

Pace bowler Dilshan Madushanka grabbed a career best 5-34 as Sri Lanka cruised to a thumping eight-wicket win over Pakistan in Lahore on Tuesday which ends England's hopes of reaching the tri-series final.The left-armer was well supported by spinner Sahan Arachchige, who took 2-24, to dismiss Pakistan for a paltry 110 in just 25.3 overs. The Sri Lankan batters reached the target in just 18.1 overs.The victory is Sri Lanka's second in three games, enough to deprive the third team England of a spot in Sunday's final, for which Pakistan have already qualified with three wins.The English, who have contrived to lose successive matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan from winning positions, needed the hosts to win to have any hope of joining them in the final.Consequently, Thursday's match between Sri Lanka and England is a dead rubber.Kamindu Mendis struck two sixes and eight fours in his 62 not out from 60 balls, reaching his fifth ODI half-century with a six off Shaheen Shah Afridi. Pavan Rathnayake was unbeaten on 23.Avishka Fernando fell for 16 and skipper Kusal Mendis made eight, with wickets going to Shaheen and Arafat Minhas.Mendis praised the efforts of his bowlers, particularly Madushanka."We executed our plans well and Dilshan bowled superbly, everyone is happy at the team's progress," said Mendis, whose team hunted down 430 against England on Thursday - the second highest successful chase in all ODIs.Shaheen put on a brave face after an abject display by his team."We must forget this match and get ready for the final," said Shaheen. "We will come back in the final and bat stronger."Earlier, it was Madushanka's demolition act that wrecked Pakistan, who were put in to bat. Their 110 was their second lowest ODI total at home behind the 75 they made against the same opposition and at the same venue in 2009.Pakistan, who chased down 242 in a thrilling one-wicket win against England on Sunday, batted poorly on a flat Gaddafi Stadium pitch with token resistance from Babar Azam, top-scoring with 29, and Hasan Nawaz who made 17.Madushanka dismissed out-of-form opener Fakhar Zaman for five in the fourth over to start the slide.Azam and Saad Baig put on 23 for the third wicket before Madushanka had Baig caught at cover for five, while Arachchige removed Salman Agha for nine.The next over saw Azam falling leg before to Eshan Malinga.Madushanka ensured Pakistan fell way short of a decent total by taking the wickets of Shaheen (15) and Haris Rauf (one) to complete a five-wicket haul.Madushanka's previous best figure of 5-80 came against India in Mumbai in the 2023 World Cup.

The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has designated four health centers as "Baby-Friendly" under the "Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative", as part of its ongoing efforts to promote maternal and child health, encourage breastfeeding, and provide a supportive health environment for it. The designation includes Leabaib, Umm Slal, Al Thumama, and Muaither health centers, which fall under the Primary Health Care Corporation. The centers received the designation in recognition of their commitment to implementing the initiative's standards approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and providing the necessary care and support for mothers and children. The designation followed the completion of comprehensive and thorough evaluations conducted by a team of specialists from MOPH, accredited by WHO, to verify the extent of compliance with the standards and steps of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. This brings the total number of healthcare facilities designated as "Baby-Friendly Hospitals" in the State of Qatar to nine, following the previous designation of five healthcare facilities under the initiative. This move underscores the progress made in expanding its implementation and promoting healthcare practices that support breastfeeding and maternal and child care.Director of the Health Promotion Department at MOPH, Dr. Salah Abdulla Alyafei, said the designation of these healthcare facilities reflects the Ministry's efforts to promote maternal and child health and support breastfeeding.He emphasized the Ministry's commitment to providing support to healthcare facilities in both the public and private sectors and developing the skills of healthcare providers, thereby contributing to the wider implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative in the State of Qatar. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program launched by WHO and UNICEF to establish healthcare systems that support breastfeeding.

Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries should co-ordinate industrial strategies, replace imports with locally made products, and build cross-border investment corridors to strengthen regional integration, trade, and shared business opportunities, ministers said. Speaking at the session on “The Future of Investment in the Gulf Region” during the ninth World Investment Forum (WIF) in Doha yesterday, ministers from across the Gulf highlighted the need to move beyond attracting foreign capital and create practical opportunities that encourage investment, expand manufacturing and connect regional markets. Bahrain’s industry and commerce minister, Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro, said governments needed to take a more proactive role in identifying and developing investment opportunities based on actual market demand. Rather than simply promoting their countries to international investors, he said governments should identify products they can manufacture locally instead of importing. GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said the region should be viewed as an interconnected economic and investment system rather than six separate national markets. He cited the bloc’s gross domestic product of $2.4tn, external trade exceeding $1.3tn and sovereign wealth fund assets of more than $5tn as indicators of its economic and financial capacity. Albudaiwi also said foreign direct investment stock in GCC countries exceeded $792bn in 2025, including more than $171bn in investment between member states. Intra-GCC investment therefore represented approximately 22% of the total, according to the figures presented during the session. HE the Minister of State for Foreign Trade Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Sayed said that recent crises had shown how closely Gulf economies are connected and how their industries can complement one another. He said the GCC had maintained the movement of goods through alternative routes despite disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, demonstrating the value of regional connectivity. He called for stronger links between industries, with the private sector playing a central role in using resources across the value chain to expand intra-GCC trade and manufacturing. The UAE representative also highlighted trade agreements’ role in opening markets and attracting investment. He cited the UAE’s Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs), which aim to reduce tariffs and improve market access for businesses. The UAE’s foreign trade reached Dh3.8tn, or approximately $1.1tn, in the previous year, according to figures shared during the session. Trade with CEPA partner countries contributed to non-oil trade growth, illustrating how market access can create opportunities for businesses and investors. Kuwait’s state minister for economic affairs and investment, Abdulaziz Nasser Abdulaziz al-Marzouq, said the region had the energy, capital, human resources and regulatory environment needed to develop high-value industries, particularly in technology. 

Pakistan paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi grabbed four wickets to limit England to 241 despite a fighting century by Ben Duckett in Lahore on Sunday.Battling to stay in the tri-series after losing their first two games, England never fully recovered after slipping to 19-3 on a batting-friendly pitch. Duckett resisted with a knock of 105 off 111 balls and Sam Curran scored 42 during a 93-run fifth wicket stand, while Gus Atkinson contributed an unbeaten 36 at the bottom of the order.Shaheen claimed 4-46 while Razaullah took 2-38 on his ODI debut as England were bowled out in 46.4 overs. Duckett hit 10 fours and two sixes before falling to spinner Arafat Minhas, who finished with 2-26.Opting to bowl first, Shaheen removed Tom Banton for four in the opening over -- his 150th ODI wicket.The lanky left-armer is the 13th bowler from Pakistan to take 150 or more wickets. In his next over, Shaheen got the prized wicket of Joe Root for five, caught cutting a short delivery.England plunged into further trouble when Harry Brook -- who scored the fastest-ever ODI double century in his team's shock defeat to Sri Lanka -- was run out for one. Duckett's fifth ODI hundred and Curran's resolute batting briefly steadied England before Shaheen took two more wickets to end the innings.
