Zverev romps into quarter-finals as Darderi downed

Top seed Alexander Zverev romped into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Monday with a straight sets defeat of Italy's Luciano Darderi. Zverev, who had been taken to five sets in his opening two matches of the tournament, raced past 21st seed Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) in 2hr 30mins on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court. The brisk victory came as a welcome change for Zverev, whose marathon first and second round matches had finished in the early hours of the morning. "I don't know what to do with myself because it's before midnight," Zverev quipped afterwards. "Compared to the first two matches, the level has been going up." The 29-year-old French Open champion was in complete control throughout, punishing Darderi's woeful service game to grab an early double break in the first set for a 3-0 lead.Darderi, who has failed to go further than the fourth round at any Grand Slam in his career, never looked like forcing his way back into the set thereafter. Zverev mopped up the first set easily and was soon back on the attack in the second, once again securing a quick double-break for a 3-0 lead before holding with ease to go two sets up.Darderi did manage to rally in the third set, suddenly finding his range with some blistering forehands and holding off four break points in the 11th game to help set up a tie-break. But Zverev's superior service game meant there was only going to be one winner in the tie-break, a thunderous serve giving him a 5-2 lead before a scorching forehand into the corner took him to match point. Zverev then wrapped up victory with his 13th ace of the match."I thought my level was very consistent," Zverev said. "It was just he started playing incredibly well in the third set. I barely saw anyone hit the ball as hard consistently as he did in the third set," added the German, who will now face Dutch veteran Botic van de Zandschulp in the quarter-finals.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz posted his most convincing win in his injury return at the US Open, downing Tommy Paul in straight sets on Sunday to line up a quarter-final clash with Ben Shelton. Two-time women's defending champion Aryna Sabalenka also advanced, booking a last-eight date with Wimbledon winner Linda Noskova. Second-seeded Alcaraz, playing his first tournament since he was sidelined by a right wrist injury in April, looked closer to his brilliant best in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Paul, the 20th-seeded American who posed the Spaniard's sternest test yet. "I played my game," said Alcaraz, who unleashed 33 winners as he moved fluidly around the court, thwarting Paul at every turn in the two-hour 20-minute match.He'll face red-hot Shelton -- a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 winner over Stefanos Tsitsipas -- for a place in the semi-finals. "I tried to play my style," Alcaraz said. "Tommy is such a talented player. His shots are pretty dangerous and sometimes it's really difficult to control the ball when it comes to you."I just tried to be ready for a battle and tried to be aggressive all the time." Alcaraz grabbed the first break of the contest in the final game of a tight first set. From there he was in control. He broke Paul twice in the second set and again early in the third.He finished it off with a gutsy hold of serve in which he saved a pair of break points, the second with a swinging forehand volley that he followed with a forehand winner to set up the only match point he needed. "I'm really happy with the performance today," Alcaraz said.Shelton, who needed four sets in each of his first three matches, raised his game to dismantle former world number three Tsitsipas in just one hour and 52 minutes.The American, riding high after a strong August that included a title at the ATP Montreal Masters, blasted a dozen aces and never faced a break point. "I played a complete match from start to finish," said Shelton, who was looking forward to taking on Alcaraz. "I think the level that he's been playing at is really, really impressive. To not play for five months then do what he's done so far this tournament has been super-human.""I think it's going to be fireworks on Tuesday night," Shelton said. - Sabalenka on track -Sabalenka kept her bid for a rare US Open three-peat on track with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over American Taylor Townsend.The Belarusian, whose world number one ranking is on the line in New York, will face a tough quarter-final against sixth-ranked Czech Noskova, who edged dangerous Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.Sabalenka needed all of her resolve against the multi-faceted Townsend, whose blistering service returns and net prowess flummoxed the Belarusian star in a first set that opened with five breaks of serve.But her sustained power and precision proved too much and after falling behind 3-1 in the second set she won the last five games to seal the match."I was just trying to stay focused on myself and play not only point by point but ball by ball," Sabalenka said. "I'm happy that I was able to turn around that second set." Noskova needed six match points to seal her victory over Kostyuk, failing to convert two in the second set. "I am more than relieved," Noskova said. "This match was so tough, emotionally more so than physically." American Frances Tiafoe, the 11th seed who has twice reached the semi-finals in Flushing Meadows, booked his quarter-final berth with a 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) victory over former champion Daniil Medvedev. "Hell of a match," Tiafoe said. "I played well when it counted." Tiafoe will face compatriot Alex Michelsen for a place in the semi-finals. Michelsen defeated Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6 (8/6), 6-4, 6-4. Women's third seed Jessica Pegula also advanced the US cause. Pegula, one of the players with a chance to supplant Sabalenka atop the rankings in New York, reached the last eight with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Romanian Sorana Cirstea. She will play fellow American Emma Navarro, who defeated Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 6-2.bb/amz

Shoulder Pain? When to seek specialist care in Qatar

Shoulder pain has a way of affecting almost every part of daily life. Simple tasks such as reaching for a shelf, lifting groceries, exercising, driving, or even sleeping comfortably can become surprisingly difficult. Many people assume shoulder pain will eventually disappear on its own. While minor strains often improve with rest, persistent pain may indicate an underlying condition that requires professional assessment. Knowing when to seek specialist care can help prevent long-term complications and support a faster return to normal activities.  Common Causes of Shoulder Pain The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, making it particularly vulnerable to injury and wear. Common causes include:Rotator cuff injuriesShoulder impingementTendinitisFrozen shoulderArthritisSports-related injuriesShoulder instability or dislocationIn Qatar, shoulder problems are frequently seen among athletes, gym-goers, manual workers, and office employees who spend long hours at a desk.  Signs You Should Not Ignore Pain That Persists for Several Weeks Temporary soreness is common after physical activity. However, pain lasting more than a few weeks may indicate structural damage or ongoing inflammation. Difficulty Lifting or Reaching Struggling to raise your arm overhead or perform routine activities may suggest tendon, muscle, or joint involvement. Night Pain That Disrupts Sleep Pain that worsens at night is often associated with rotator cuff disorders and other shoulder conditions that benefit from further evaluation. Weakness or Instability A sensation that the shoulder may slip, catch, or give way can indicate instability or previous injury requiring orthopedic assessment.  Why Accurate Diagnosis Matters Many shoulder conditions produce similar symptoms, which is why self-diagnosis can be misleading. A specialist evaluation often includes a physical examination and, when necessary, advanced diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI. Identifying the exact source of pain allows treatment to target the underlying problem rather than simply managing symptoms.  Treatment Options Not all shoulder pain requires surgery. Many patients improve through a combination of:Activity modificationPhysiotherapyTargeted strengthening exercisesPain management strategiesGuided rehabilitation programs For more complex cases, treatment may involve orthopedic consultation, image-guided interventions, or surgical procedures when conservative measures are no longer effective. A structured rehabilitation plan remains a key component of recovery, helping restore movement, strength, and long-term shoulder function.  When Should Someone Seek Medical Evaluation? Consider seeking specialist care if shoulder pain persists beyond a few weeks, limits daily activities, disrupts sleep, follows an injury, or is accompanied by weakness or loss of motion. Early evaluation can help identify the cause and expand available treatment options before the condition progresses.  About DOC Medical Center DOC Medical Center is a specialized healthcare institution in Qatar focused on orthopedics, sports medicine, spine care, rehabilitation, physiotherapy, diagnostic imaging, neurology, neurosurgery, and surgical services. Through its Al Sadd, Lusail, and Izghawa branches, DOC provides patient-centered multidisciplinary care that supports patients from diagnosis through recovery. DOC Medical Center was recognized as the Best Medical Center in Qatar – Medicare Qatar Healthcare Awards 2025 and holds ACHSI EQUIP 7 International Accreditation, reflecting its commitment to clinical quality, patient safety, and evidence-based care. Shoulder pain is easier to treat when treated early. Shoulder pain is often easier to treat when addressed early. If symptoms are affecting your daily activities, exercise routine, or sleep, a professional evaluation can help determine the most appropriate next steps.  Phone: +974 4475 3333 --- Email: [email protected] --- https://www.docmedc.com/

Williams sisters fall in thrilling return to US Open doubles

Serena and Venus Williams electrified Arthur Ashe Stadium but fell to Chan Hao-ching and Maya Joint in three thrilling sets in their return to the US Open women's doubles on Friday.The superstar sisters, whose 14 Grand Slam doubles titles include two US Opens, rallied from a break down in the third set and led the deciding 10-point tiebreaker 5-0 but fell 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (10/7). Venus, 46, and Serena, 44, hadn't played Grand Slam doubles since the 2022 US Open and last won a title together at Roland Garros in 2018.They showed flashes of their brilliant best, Serena proving particularly dangerous patrolling the net but struggling with her serve.After recovering from losing the first set to level the match in the second-set tiebreaker.They belted no fewer than 20 winners in the set, holding serve throughout and leveled the match when Joint smacked an overhead long to roars from the crowd.Chan and Joint regrouped to seize a 4-2 lead in the third. The sisters rallied, but get to the finish line as Taiwan's Chan and Joint fought back superbly to clinch the victory.For Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion considered by many to be tennis's greatest women's player, it was her first return to the courts of Flushing Meadows since then.The 44-year-old had returned to major singles play as a Wimbledon wild card four years after "evolving away" from the game. At the All-England club she lost to Joint in a Centre Court clash that captured the imagination of both diehard and casual tennis fans. Even that experience didn't prepare Joint for the atmosphere on the cavernous Ashe Stadium. The sisters received a thunderous ovation when they took court, all business in understated white outfits. Every blistering volley and overhead smash from the Americans received raucous cheers, and when they sprinted to the lead in the decisive 10-point tiebreaker the noise was deafening "The atmosphere was surreal," Joint said. "Being able to play aginst such legends of the game is super special."bb/rcw
