The National Planning Council hosts the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Municipality to discuss digital transformation in municipal services and food security

The National Planning Council hosted His Excellency Eng. Ali bin Mohammed Al Ali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Municipality, for the fifth episode of Podcast AlTanmiya. The episode discussed the Ministry's efforts to strengthen the country's food security system and supply chains, the project to plant ten million trees, the updated building requirements for residential villas, the digital transformation of public-facing services through the "Oun" application, and the Ministry's role in achieving the goals of the Third National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030. His Excellency confirmed that local markets have seen no shortage of food supplies since the regional crisis began at the end of February, and that the Ministry now issues residential villa building permits within a single day, compared with more than thirty days previously, using artificial intelligence. The episode addressed the country's food security system, the role of the committee responsible for monitoring the implementation of food security policies, which meets twice weekly to track strategic reserves, and the mechanisms that balance local production and imports to ensure a sustainable supply in the market. His Excellency noted that Qatar has achieved 100% self-sufficiency in dairy and 99.9% in fresh poultry, supported by regulations that have protected and strengthened local production. On the system's readiness over the past period, His Excellency the Undersecretary said: "Since the crisis began at the end of February, around six months ago, not a single shortage has been recorded. Walk into any store and look at the shelves, and you will not find anything missing." His Excellency the Undersecretary explained that the Ministry began applying artificial intelligence to residential villa building permits after training the system on all requirements and regulations, with the technology set to extend to the Ministry's remaining services. "The impact of artificial intelligence has not been limited to speed of delivery. It has also reduced errors and increased the efficiency of consultancy offices. We have begun using it in public cleanliness and building inspection, and we are working on digital twins that allow the entire city to be simulated before a decision is taken," he said. His Excellency Eng. Ali bin Mohammed Al Ali also discussed the ten million trees project, which the Ministry is delivering in phases that include planting along main roads such as Salwa Road, in cooperation with government and private entities including QatarEnergy. "The project has reached four million eight hundred thousand trees to date, close to half of the target," he noted.Turning to digital transformation in municipal services, His Excellency said the Ministry has digitised close to 29 million documents, and that all reports, whether received by telephone, through the application or via social media platforms, are handled through a unified call centre and prioritised according to the importance of the issue rather than the channel through which it arrived. "Customer satisfaction reached 86%, and we received close to one million requests during 2025 through the "Oun" application, which has surpassed 800 thousand downloads, and through online submission," he added. The episode also discussed the updated building requirements for residential villas, introduced in response to the needs of Qatari families, with only one exemption request received by the Ministry since they came into effect. "We reduced the minimum plot size to 400 square metres, so that any new employee is able to obtain a plot of land and build on it," His Excellency the Undersecretary said. Podcast AlTanmiya serves as a dialogue platform that highlights issues impacting daily life and Qatar's national growth. Through it, the National Planning Council hosts decision-makers, including ministry undersecretaries and CEOs, shedding light on government entities working as one integrated system to achieve the outcomes of the Third National Development Strategy.Viewers can watch the fifth episode across the Council's social media platforms and can also submit their questions for upcoming episodes' guests through Podcast AlTanmiya page on the Council's website:In Arabic: https://www.npc.qa/ar/pages/altanmiya.aspxIn English: https://www.npc.qa/en/pages/altanmiya.aspx

To mark the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP), Hamad International Airport (HIA) and the Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan), one of the centers operating under the Qatar Foundation (QF), launched a joint collaborative program aimed at enhancing the awareness of the valued elderly regarding travel procedures, services, and accessibility facilities available at the airport. The move contributes to greater independence and confidence while travelling and provides them with a smoother, more comfortable, and inclusive travel experience. The launch of the program comes as part of both entities’ commitment to strengthening community partnerships and integrating efforts aimed at empowering the valued elderly and improving their quality of life. It also seeks to reinforce the concept of inclusion and provide them with the opportunity to directly learn about HIA’s facilities, travel services, digital solutions, and the available channels for requesting assistance throughout the various stages of their journey. The program includes organising periodic visits for the valued elderly to HIA, featuring guided and introductory tours of the airport’s facilities and services dedicated to travelers, as well as awareness sessions covering the key stages of the passenger journey, travel procedures, digital solutions, and accessibility services. These sessions aim to help participants navigate the travel experience with greater knowledge, confidence, and independence. The program also prioritises the participation of the valued elderly by listening to their views and feedback regarding their experience and utilizing their input to further develop future sessions and tours. This supports ongoing efforts to provide a more inclusive travel experience that better meets their needs, while helping to identify areas that may require further awareness or clarification. This collaboration embodies HIA’s commitment to providing an inclusive and accessible travel experience for all passengers, alongside the role undertaken by Ehsan in empowering the valued elderly and enhancing their quality of life, thereby supporting the provision of a travel experience characterised by accessibility, confidence, and independence. Executive Manager of Ehsan, Manal al-Mannai, said the launch of the collaborative program with HIA, coinciding with IDOP, reflects the importance of integrating the roles of community institutions in supporting and empowering the valued elderly and providing services and experiences that enhance their independence and active participation in society. Al-Mannai added that Ehsan is committed to ensuring that the valued elderly are active partners in development of the services and experiences provided to them, and for opportunities that enhance their independence and confidence across various aspects of their lives. She elaborated that the program combines awareness, practical experience, contributing to enhancing their knowledge of travel services, airport facilities and achieving a more inclusive, suitable experience for them.

Sidra introduces 2 specialised therapies for children with high-risk neuroblastoma

To close Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this September, Sidra Medicine has marked two significant milestones in paediatric cancer care, following the introduction of two specialised therapies for children with high-risk neuroblastoma.  Sidra Medicine’s Pediatric Haematology, Oncology and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) teams have successfully administered naxitamab (Danyelza) for the first time in the GCC, followed by dinutuximab beta (Qarziba) for the first time in Qatar. Both are anti-GD2 monoclonal antibody therapies and are used in the treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma.  Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that develops in a child’s nerve tissue – the sympathetic nervous system. The cancer affects babies and young children and almost always develops before the age of 5.  Dr Chiara Cugno, Acting Division Chief of Pediatric Haematology and Oncology at Sidra Medicine, said: “The introduction of these complex therapies involved extensive preparation and collaboration across Sidra Medicine’s medical, surgical, nursing, pharmacy, education and wider multidisciplinary teams. This is also a testament to our commitment to continually advance paediatric cancer treatment and care as well as expanding access to specialised therapies for children and families in Qatar.”  The therapies were administered to two patients following stem cell transplantation, marking an important advancement in the specialised treatment options available to children with cancer at Sidra Medicine.  Issa, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at birth, was our first patient in Qatar and the first patient in the GCC to receive naxitamab (Danyelza). The new specialised therapy was part of his treatment regimen at Sidra Medicine, which included a combination of chemotherapy and autologous transplantation.  Issa’s father said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better team to care for Issa, at a hospital that delivers care of the highest international standards. Thanks to the support we received, we were in turn able to support and celebrate every step and milestone of Issa’s journey as a family.”  Issa’s father’s advice to other parents: “This journey can be long and very difficult. For us, optimism was an important part of going through it. A smile and emotional support for your child are essential for every stage of their treatment. For every parent facing a childhood cancer diagnosis, may Issa’s story give you hope and reassurance for each step and every milestone.”
