 Uzbekistan’s newly inaugurated Islamic Civilisation Centre reflects the country’s efforts to preserve the legacy of renowned Muslim scholars while strengthening cultural co-operation with Qatar and the wider Islamic world, ambassador Ashraf Khodjaev has said.Speaking at a presentation in Doha dedicated to the Islamic Civilisation Centre, the envoy described the institution as a major national project initiated by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in 2017 and inaugurated recently.The event was attended by a number of dignitaries, including HE the Minister of State and Qatar National Library (QNL) President Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kawari, HE the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Secretary-General and Qatar Committee for the Alliance of Civilisations Chairman Dr Ahmad Hassan al-Hammadi, MoFA Protocol Department director Ibrahim Yousif Fakhro, HE the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and chairman of the Board of Directors for the Doha International Centre for Interfaith Dialogue Dr Ibrahim bin Saleh al-Nuaimi, and Katara Cultural Village general manager Prof Dr Khalid Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, in addition several ambassadors and diplomats.Khodjaev said the centre holds special significance not only for Uzbekistan but also for the broader Islamic world, highlighting the country’s rich intellectual and spiritual heritage rooted in the historic cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.He noted that the region produced some of the Islamic world’s most influential scholars and scientists, including Imam al-Bukhari, Imam al-Maturidi, al-Khwarizmi, al-Beruni and Mirzo Ulugbek, whose contributions shaped the development of mathematics, astronomy, medicine and philosophy.“The Islamic Civilisation Centre was created to preserve and present this extraordinary legacy in a modern and meaningful way, particularly for younger generations,” Khodjaev said.He described the centre as more than a museum, saying that it is envisioned as a platform for education, research, dialogue and cultural exchange.Khodjaev also lauded Qatar’s role in promoting culture, education and diplomacy, citing institutions such as the QNL, Katara, Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) and Education City.“Both of our countries recognise that long-term development is ultimately built not only through infrastructure and economic growth, but through investment in people, education, culture and historical memory,” he said.The envoy stressed the importance of helping younger generations remain connected to their identity, values and intellectual heritage, especially in a rapidly changing world.He also highlighted Central Asia’s historical role as a crossroads of civilisations where knowledge, trade and ideas connected different parts of the world.Khodjaev thanked Al Jazeera Media Network for supporting plans to produce documentary films about the Islamic Civilisation Centre and other historical landmarks and personalities from Uzbekistan.The ambassador invited people in Qatar to visit Uzbekistan and explore its cultural and historical landmarks, including the newly inaugurated Imam Al-Bukhari Complex in Samarkand, which he described as one of the region’s most important spiritual and cultural projects.He also revealed ongoing co-operation between the MIA and the QNL on a special publication featuring artefacts and manuscripts linked to Uzbekistan’s history that are preserved in museums across Qatar.Khodjaev thanked Qatari officials and institutions for supporting efforts to deepen cultural and intellectual ties between Uzbekistan and Qatar.

Jewellery shops in Qatar are witnessing brisk sales during the Eid al Adha holiday, with customers taking advantage of a modest dip in gold prices to make festive purchases, it is learnt.Market data revealed that in Qatar, 24 karat gold was priced at “QR546.50” per gramme yesterday (May 26), easing slightly from the previous day. Retailers said the modest decline encouraged shoppers to buy during the holiday, reinforcing the seasonal demand pattern that typically lifts sales at this time of year.Shopkeepers added that brisk activity was evident across popular gold souqs and malls, with many customers opting for traditional designs as well as lighter ornaments suited for gifting. “We see families coming in together, often buying sets for weddings or smaller pieces for children,” one jeweller at Souq Waqif explained, noting that Eid remains one of the strongest trading periods of the year.Gold staged a strong rebound in the previous session, gaining “1.35%” to settle at “$4,570” per ounce, according to Vijay Valecha, chief investment officer at Century Financial. According to Valecha, the metal was trading “0.83%” lower at “$4,532,” reflecting cautious sentiment amid regional uncertainty.Valecha observed that the recent decline in oil prices over the past week had helped ease inflation concerns, “providing further support to bullion.”Despite the current pullback, Valecha maintained that “the overall technical outlook for gold remains positive.” Prices continue to hold above a key ascending trendline support on the four hour chart that has been intact since May 19, he noted.“As long as gold sustains above the crucial $4,515 level, which falls on the trendline support, the intraday bullish structure remains valid, with expectations of a potential rebound from current levels,” Valecha said.He identified immediate resistance at the previous session high of “$4,580,” followed by the 50 day simple moving average at “$4,648.” Silver, meanwhile, was quoted at “$76.49,” down “2%,” with support at “$74” and resistance at “$78.79.”Valecha also pointed to macro factors, including energy price movements, inflation expectations, and currency dynamics, as likely to keep prices well supported, even as near term volatility persists. Analysts generally view bullion’s safe haven role as intact, with investors and households turning to gold during periods of uncertainty.For retailers in Qatar, the combination of festive demand and supportive market fundamentals has created a favourable environment. “Customers are buying during dips, and Eid has always been a strong period for jewellery sales,” one shop manager pointed out.He noted that while high prices remain a challenge for some buyers, the cultural significance of gifting gold during Eid continues to underpin demand. Traders expect momentum to carry through the week, with many shops extending hours to accommodate the surge in foot traffic, the shopkeeper added.

A 28-member Qatar football squad - coached by Julen Lopetegui - on Wednesday left Doha for Dublin where they will play an international against Ireland on Thursday. Following their friendly in Dublin, the Qatar squad will then leave for Los Angeles, United States, where they are scheduled to play their final friendly against El Salvador on June 6. On Tuesday, coach Lopetegui announced a 28-member squad. The squad will be trimmed to 26 on or before June 2nd deadline announced by FIFA. The FIFA World Cup will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Two-time Asian champions Qatar secured qualification for a second consecutive FIFA World Cup - the first on merit - after progressing through the play-offs against Oman and the UAE late last year. Al Annabi have been drawn in Group B and will open their campaign against Switzerland on June 13 at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium before facing co-hosts Canada on June 19 in Vancouver and Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 24 in Seattle. Qatar will base their FIFA World Cup campaign in Santa Barbara, California, with the national team set to train at Westmont College after FIFA confirmed team base camps for the 2026 tournament. The Qatar squad will stay in the coastal Californian city during the expanded 48-team World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from next month. FIFA announced the official list of team base camps, with Qatar assigned to Santa Barbara, where Westmont College will serve as the team’s training site as the Gulf nation prepare for another appearance on football’s biggest stage. “Team Base Camps are an integral part of the fabric of any FIFA World Cup,” said Heimo Schirgi, FIFA World Cup 2026 chief operating officer. “They are where teams put down roots, train and recuperate, and experience the day-to-day rhythms of the tournament,” he added. Defending champions Argentina and England were both assigned bases in Kansas City, while the majority of participating nations will be stationed across the United States.According to FIFA, 39 of the 48 competing teams will be based in the United States, with seven teams located in Mexico and two in Canada. Iran were confirmed to be based in Tijuana, Mexico, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum saying on Monday that the country would allow the team to stay there to avoid potential United States visa restrictions.  

Qatar Condemns Explosion Targeting Train in Pakistan Doha | May 25, 2026 The State of Qatar strongly condemns the explosion that targeted a passenger train in the southwest of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates the State of Qatar's firm stance against violence, terrorism, and criminal acts, regardless of motives or reasons. The Ministry expresses the State of Qatar’s condolences to the families of the victims, and to the government and people of Pakistan, and its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.
