Tuchel has 'no fear' after omitting star names from England's World Cup squad

Thomas Tuchel said on Friday he has no fears after leaving "extraordinary talents" out of England's World Cup squad, boldly stating his aim is to win the tournament.The German coach omitted a clutch of big names for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, including Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Harry Maguire, Adam Wharton, Morgan Gibbs-White and Luke Shaw are others overlooked as Gareth Southgate's successor made an eye-catching selection.Saudi-based Ivan Toney was the most surprising pick, having played just a handful of minutes as a substitute since Euro 2024. England are among the favourites at the World Cup, 60 years after they won their only major international trophy.Tuchel told a press conference at Wembley that the balance of his squad was more important than picking star names. "From day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select the best 26 most-talented players," he said. "Teams win championships, it's as simple as that."The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss admitted he had had to make painful decisions but said he had "no fear" over his choices. "It was a given that from these 55 players (in the provisional squad), we have to leave some extraordinary talents and extraordinary personalities at home," he said.The 52-year-old added: "I like these kind of decisions, even if it took us weeks and sometimes months to verify the decisions. I think they bring clarity, I think they bring a certain edge in the end that is necessary."Tuchel, appointed with a brief to win the World Cup, said he wanted to create a "brotherhood" and believes England have the world-class players to make a difference."The goal is to try to win it and not be shy about it, and then just to respect the game and the opponents and the amount and the obstacles that come with the tournament itself," he said.Tuchel admitted the selection of Toney, who plays for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, was "a bit of a surprise to us" but said he "ticks some boxes that we wanted".The former Brentford striker has scored 32 goals in 32 league games this season. "I think he has very special skills that could help us, meaning the situation, the scenario when we are chasing a result, when we are chasing a goal," added Tuchel."I think he can be a very valuable addition to Harry Kane. He can be a presence in the box when we are pushing for a goal. He is a natural finisher, he can help us with set pieces, he is very strong in the air, very good in using his body."England kick off their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17 with group games to follow against Ghana and Panama. SquadGoalkeepers: Jordan Pickford (Everton), Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), James Trafford (Manchester City)Defenders: Reece James (Chelsea), Tino Livramento, Dan Burn (Newcastle), Marc Guehi, John Stones, Nico O'Reilly (all Manchester City), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen), Djed Spence (Tottenham)Midfielders: Declan Rice (Arsenal), Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid/ESP), Jordan Henderson (Brentford), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal)Forwards: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Ivan Toney (Al-Ahli/KSA), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke (Arsenal), Marcus Rashford (Barcelona/ESP), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle)

Qatari Haj Mission ramps up efforts to ensure lodging readiness for pilgrims

The Qatari Haj Mission’s Surveillance and Inspection Unit is continuing to ramp up tours of the accommodation facilities of Qatar’s pilgrims and pilgrimage operators as part of the comprehensive preparations to receive them starting from the 4th of Dhu al-Hijjah. The move is intended to ensure that all accommodation facilities are fully equipped through the enforcement of the highest standards, as well as health and food requirements, to provide a secure and comfortable environment for them throughout their religious journey. Head of the Qatari Haj Mission’s Surveillance and Inspection Unit Mohammed Hassan al-Kaabi said these tours come as part of an integrated surveillance system to ensure that all pilgrimage operators adhere to the requirements for providing top-notch accommodation facilities. The purpose is to confirm that these facilities comply with all mission-approved conditions and specifications, al-Kaabi noted, pointing out that the inspection operations include checking bedrooms and public utilities, such as prayer rooms, restaurants, and reception lobbies, to ensure enhanced sanitation levels and the readiness of these facilities based on the top-tier approved criteria. Al-Kaabi highlighted that these tours include kitchens and food preparation settings, where all appliances are checked to confirm their validity, in addition to the quality of food components and adherence to the enforced health requirements to ensure the safety of meals served to pilgrims. He noted that the unit comprises health and food safety inspectors from the Ministry of Municipality, who take part in onsite inspections to ensure compliance with approved health and food safety standards. This move underscores the combined efforts of state institutions and their co-ordination in providing top-tier care services for pilgrims of Qatar, while ensuring their safety either during their stay at accommodation facilities or during commutation, Al Kaabi underlined. He clarified that this operation started earlier ahead of the Haj preparations, with the unit conducting tours of the operators’ accommodation facilities with the objective of taking notes and feedback. The aim was obviously to ensure those pilgrimage operators had been complying with the essential requirements ahead of the pilgrims’ arrival and to ensure the sites are truly ready and fully operational, followed by further visits after their arrival to conduct interviews and monitor their perspectives in terms of the quality of reception and food services to elevate their satisfaction, al-Kaabi recalled. Al-Kaabi called on pilgrims to participate in evaluating pilgrimage operators online by filling out forms that will be texted to their smartphones. He confirmed that this move is an essential tool in promoting performance, as well as the services afforded to them. He assured that these surveillance tours will remain in effect throughout the whole Haj season to ensure a safer and more luxurious environment for pilgrims from Qatar, as all supportive units in this mission are operating in unison to care for those pilgrims. The surveillance likewise extends to their tents in the Holy Sites in coordination with the Sites Service Unit to verify the enforcement of safety and health requirements. Strikingly, the mission has provided a free call service for all pilgrims from Qatar, as part of its commitment to protecting them and ensuring top-notch services are in place. Pilgrims can either dial the hotline 132 from inside Qatar, or 8003040444 inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for pilgrims who hold both Qatari and Saudi SIM cards, to submit complaints and inquiries. This step will obviously ensure swift interaction with all cases and provide support instantly. The unit broadly undertakes a pivotal role in confirming combined efforts in terms of co-ordination with all supportive units through receiving these complaints and inquiries and following up on them directly. These efforts are part of a combined system the Qatari mission is undertaking in unison with the authoritative agencies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with the latter undertaking a pivotal role in regulating pilgrimage affairs based on advanced operational plans.

Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer retired from international duty in 2024 but coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed the World Cup winner will play ahead of Oliver Baumann at this summer's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. (AFP)

Lopetegui urges Qatar to embrace World Cup challenge with belief and ambition

Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui has called on his players to embrace the toughest challenge in the nation’s football history with courage, realism and belief as Al Annabi prepare for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The global football showpiece will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. Qatar are drawn in Group B, and will open their campaign against Switzerland in San Francisco on June 13 before facing Canada in Vancouver on June 18. Their final group-stage match will be against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Seattle on June 24. Appointed in May 2025, Lopetegui guided Qatar through a tense playoff campaign against Oman and the UAE. After a goalless draw with Oman, Qatar defeated the UAE 2-1 in Doha last October, with goals from Boualem Khoukhi and Pedro Miguel sealing a historic qualification for the World Cup through the qualifiers for the first time in the nation’s history. Qatar had made its World Cup debut in 2022, which it hosted. Speaking in an interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA), Lopetegui acknowledged the scale of the challenge awaiting the two-time Asian champions but insisted his side must confront it head-on. “This is the reality that we have to face, and we cannot change it, so we have to accept the fact that we will play against Switzerland first, and we have to be ready to do our best against a very strong team,” Lopetegui said. “Switzerland is perhaps one of the most balanced teams in Europe over the last eight years. They have the same coach, and they have outstanding players who play in the best leagues in the world, such as the Champions League, the English Premier League, the Italian League, and the Spanish League; therefore, we have to be ready to face them.” The former Spain and Real Madrid coach warned that the challenge would not ease after the opening game. He described Canada as another highly competitive side packed with players competing at the highest European level, while stressing that Bosnia and Herzegovina had already proven their credentials by qualifying at the expense of Italy. “We realize that we are playing against teams of another level, and at the same time we know our real reality, and that the competitors are better than us, but this does not mean surrendering, but rather knowing what awaits us and what it requires us to be ready in order to achieve our ambition and dream of being a strong contender, and to prove our worthiness to be in the World Cup, in an opportunity that no one gave us, but rather we obtained it with our merit, which makes us believe in our abilities and aware of the strength of our competitors,” the 59-year-old said. Lopetegui revealed that Qatar’s preparations are focused not only on opponents, but also on adapting to unfamiliar match conditions, including morning kick-offs during the tournament. “The technical staff is working on changing many things until the date of the first match in the World Cup,” he said, adding that every available day is being used to ensure the players reach peak readiness. **media[447577]**Qatar began their preparations immediately after the end of the domestic season, with Lopetegui praising the competitive nature of the campaign and its benefit to national team players. “It was a good season in light of strong competition that benefited the national team players and certainly contributed to developing their level,” he said. “The most important thing for us was that the local players get the largest possible number of minutes, because sometimes there are not many local players in one team. I hope that most teams will include the largest possible number of Qatari players, and that they will get enough playing opportunities, and that they will compete for a sufficient number of minutes.” The Spaniard admitted injuries remain his greatest concern as Qatar continue preparations with an extended preliminary squad. “What concerns us now is reducing injuries as much as possible, and we hope to avoid them, as there is no time to recover in the event of any injury; therefore, we feel some concern and look forward to reaching full readiness before playing our first game,” he said. Lopetegui explained that the selection policy during the past year had been carefully managed with the World Cup in mind, especially regarding experienced players aged between 34 and 36. “For this reason, the choices were different in the Arab Cup, based on the need to achieve balance in the team, as it was necessary to take care of these players and think about reaching the decisive moment, which is the World Cup, in the best possible way, so that everyone is fully prepared, and they finish the season in the best possible way, to be ready for the big match that awaits them in June,” he said. Lopetegui is currently working with a 34-man group before the final squad is selected. “We are currently working with a group of approximately 34 players, who are usually familiar to us, and we will select a final list of players who we believe are capable of helping us achieve our goal of competing strongly in the World Cup." he said. “We certainly need to understand which players are better than others physically, as there are players who are injured or have been out of action for many weeks; therefore, we have to take such matters into consideration in order to finalize our list.” Lopetegui also reflected on the disruption caused by the cancellation of the Qatar Football Festival in March, which had included planned friendlies against world champions Argentina and Serbia. “Everyone in the region suffered during that period, and we had to cancel two very important matches that would have been a great test for us,” he said. “However, we changed our approach and held a 10-day training camp, during which we conducted high-quality training sessions that benefited us, as the players had been away from their daily training with their clubs for 15 days. In the end, we overcame the situation and are now looking ahead to the next period, which we will enter by playing three friendly matches before the World Cup: against Sudan in Doha tomorrow, then Ireland in Dublin, and finally El Salvador in Los Angeles, USA.” The coach pointed to previous setbacks during preparation campaigns as valuable learning experiences, citing the heavy friendly defeat against Russia last September before Qatar recovered impressively in the decisive qualifying playoffs against Oman and the UAE. According to Lopetegui, qualification itself marked the beginning of a “new page” in preparations, with the technical staff closely monitoring players in domestic and continental competitions before the latest training camp opened on May 12. While much attention has focused on star duo Akram Afif and Almoez Ali, Lopetegui stressed that Qatar’s hopes will depend on collective strength rather than individuals. “I don't like to talk about individual names, as it is about the team as a whole. Our strength does not lie in one name, but in our ability to do our best as a team. We are talking about strong opponents in the World Cup, so we must focus on our work as a group,” he said. The coach nevertheless provided an update on Almoez Ali’s difficult recovery from injury. “Almoez Ali, unfortunately, has not played more than two matches throughout this year, and he played one match with us last October because he suffered an injury and underwent surgery after our training camp last summer, and he was absent during the pre-season period until October, then he played his first match with the national team for 45 minutes, before suffering another injury and undergoing a second surgery, and being absent again before returning recently. “Therefore, I think that he played two or two and a half matches at most, which is not enough to maintain the required rhythm, and the matter here is not about being prepared or not, but rather about having the rhythm that this competition requires, and I hope that he will improve gradually. As for Akram, he is an influential player, and fortunately he is in top form and participates a lot with his team, and this is good for him and for us.” Qatar’s current training camp includes friendlies against Sudan in Doha tomorrow and Ireland in Dublin on May 28 before the squad heads to the United States for a final warm-up match against El Salvador in Los Angeles on June 6. Lopetegui also spoke emotionally about what the World Cup means for Qatar, saying he feels a deep sense of belonging and responsibility after guiding the country to qualification for the first time through the Asian qualifiers. The Spaniard said Qatari fans should already feel immense pride at reaching the tournament on merit after previously appearing as hosts at FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. He added that the players’ dream now is to compete with courage and dignity on football’s biggest stage. “They have another dream, which is to appear in a strong competitive manner, and to show fighting spirit, determination and perseverance in order to hold on to the chances and present an honorable participation,” Lopetegui said.

Veteran Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo will lead his country into the 2026 World Cup this summer after coach Roberto Martinez named the 41-year-old in his squad on Tuesday.The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star, now at Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, is set to appear at a record sixth World Cup.Portugal and Ronaldo, the all-time leading men's international goalscorer with 143 goals, have never won the competition.Ronaldo could face former Barcelona rival Lionel Messi, who is also set to play at a sixth World Cup after leading Argentina to glory four years ago in Qatar.The Portuguese forward avoided a three-match ban despite being sent off against the Republic of Ireland in their last qualifying match for an elbow.Spanish coach Martinez selected a 26-man squad with no major surprises, including Ronaldo's Al Nassr team-mate Joao Felix, and also named goalkeeper Ricardo Velho as an extra player in the group.Paris Saint-Germain stars Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes and Goncalo Ramos are also included in a strong squad, along with Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes and a contingent from Manchester City, including Bernardo Silva.Martinez said he would not need to manage five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo in a special way because of his age."In my experience, at a World Cup, a player doesn't follow the pattern of club form, age-related performance or anything like that," Martinez told reporters."The focus is our group. All of them are focussed, they're prepared for the demands of a World Cup and we just need to manage day by day." Ronaldo said last year that this World Cup would be his last.He was left in tears last weekend after defeat by Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League Two final, but Martinez said an emotionally draining season would not affect him this summer."I think that coming into the national team set-up brings new energy and allows you to completely switch off from what happened during the season," said the coach.Martinez confirmed Velho was the fourth goalkeeper and he would only be involved if another stopper was injured and could be replaced in the squad. The coach also said late striker Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in July 2025, was with the squad in spirit."The spirit, strength and example of Diogo Jota is our plus one," Martinez added.In the run-up to the tournament Portugal will face Chile and Nigeria in friendlies, before their World Cup campaign begins against DR Congo on June 17.Portugal will also face Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K on June 23 and 27, respectively.Squad:  Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa (Porto), Jose Sa (Wolves/ENG), Rui Silva (Sporting Lisbon), Ricardo Velho (Genclerbirligi/TUR)Defenders: Diogo Dalot (Manchester United/ENG), Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias (both Manchester City/ENG), Nelson Semedo (Fenerbahce/TUR), Joao Cancelo (Barcelona/ESP), Nuno Mendes (Pari Saint-Germain/FRA), Goncalo Inacio (Sporting Lisbon), Renato Veiga (Villarreal/ESP), Tomas Araujo (Benfica)Midfielders: Ruben Neves (Al Hilal/KSA), Samu Costa (Mallorca/ESP), Joao Neves, Vitinha (both Paris Saint-Germain/FRA), Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United/ENG), Bernardo Silva (Manchester City/ENG)Attackers: Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix (both Al Nassr/KSA), Francisco Trincao (Sporting Lisbon), Francisco Conceicao (Juventus/ITA), Pedro Neto (Chelsea/ENG), Rafael Leao (AC Milan/ITA), Goncalo Guedes (Real Sociedad/ESP), Goncalo Ramos (Paris Saint-Germain/FRA)
