Fables in Fashion Art Exhibition 2025 launched

Qatar Reads, an initiative under the Qatar National Library (QNL), and M7 have launched the Fables in Fashion Art Exhibition 2025 to illustrate the book Maqamat Al-Hariri in diverse artistic formats. Held in Msheireb M7, Qatar’s epicentre for innovation and entrepreneurship in design, fashion and tech, the exhibition expands the life of literature to connect and inform community members about our past as a source of cultural and creative innovation. The exhibition, which runs until September 20, is part of “One Book, One Doha”, Qatar Reads' annual reading campaign that brings community members together in a shared reading experience. Each year a book from Arabic literature is selected, inviting everyone to read, reflect and engage through a variety of campaign activities. A total of 30 artists and fashion designers are participating in reviving the content of this Arabic literary masterpiece. The exhibition includes canvas works, installations and fashion designs that were produced by 13 Qatari artists and 17 international artists. Thirty-two artistic and creative works are on display, in addition to eight fashion pieces to celebrate the power of literature and timeless wisdom. In this art exhibition, artists and collaborators bring a fresh visual perspective that infuses the narrative with a creative spirit and artistic depth. This enriches the book's content and transforms it into a multi-dimensional experience. Through their original contributions, the artists reimagine the text, broadening its scope and adding new levels of meaning. The exhibition is not just a representation of the book, it celebrates the creative added value brought by each participating artist, turning the literary work into a vibrant space for dialogue where words and images come together in a harmony worth exploring. HE the Minister of State and QNL president Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kawari said: “It is a true honour to present this magnificent artistic experience that can enable the society to learn and discover new meanings.” “The art exhibition emphasises our role at the QNL – thus expanding our efforts beyond the bookshelves,” he said. “It builds on our heritage and literature to promote imagination and creativity, culturally and technologically.” “We always aim to present our history in new, engaging ways to help the new generations absorb wisdom and build on a solid foundation where they can find engaging topics in old books,” HE Dr al-Kawari added. “This exhibition encourages members of the community to engage with literature in different ways, which means leveraging the power of reading to cultivate a reading culture within the community.” “By merging literacy initiatives with art and fashion, the Fables in Fashion Art Exhibition 2025 demonstrates that reading is part of our future-oriented vision – fueling creativity, collaboration and cultural dialogue,” he concluded. “When we selected Maqamat Al-Hariri as Book of the Year, it was based on our conviction that its themes would resonate widely across all segments of the community,” said Qatar Reads manager Fatema al-Malki, said. “We are proud of this interactive experience, which highlights art and fashion as powerful tools to reinforce the role of literature in our society, fostering creativity, innovation and cultural enrichment.”

Cybersecurity workshop stresses vigilance to meet challenges

An awareness workshop led by cybersecurity trainer Farhan Alsadi underscored the need for individuals and organisations in Qatar to strengthen their digital defences amid rising cyber threats. The session, held under the framework of the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), at the Qatar Press Center on Sunday highlighted the fast-evolving risks to personal data, critical infrastructure, and national digital assets.Alsadi cautioned that cybercrime today poses challenges not just to governments and corporations but also to everyday users navigating an increasingly connected world. He explained that cybersecurity is more than firewalls and passwords. “It is a structured set of practices and technologies designed to protect systems, networks, and information from malicious attacks,” he said. This includes securing data, preventing unauthorised access, and adopting swift response mechanisms in case of breaches.Participants were introduced to the central objectives of cybersecurity, beginning with the fundamental aim of protecting data from unauthorised access or exploitation. They learned that safeguarding sensitive information is the first line of defence in a digital world where personal, corporate, and even national assets are increasingly targeted. Closely linked to this is the need to secure networks and digital infrastructure against cyberattacks, ensuring that the systems underpinning communications, commerce, and governance remain resilient.Encryption was highlighted as a vital tool for maintaining the confidentiality of information as it moves across networks, effectively shielding it from interception or misuse. Alongside this, the importance of establishing strong security policies was emphasised, particularly in combating the persistent threat of malware that can cripple operations or compromise trust. Finally, participants were reminded that breaches, despite precautions, remain a reality; therefore, rapid response measures are essential to contain damage, restore functionality, and prevent repeat attacks.Together, these objectives framed cybersecurity not as a single action, but as an ongoing, multi-layered effort to build digital trust and resilience. The workshop stressed that protecting cyberspace is not only about technology but also about people. Raising awareness, Alsadi noted, is central to building a cyber-resilient society. Training sessions, awareness campaigns, and institutional programmes remain the first line of defence. He also pointed to the NCSA’s efforts in training national cadres on the latest cybersecurity tools, alongside supporting research to keep Qatar abreast of global challenges. International co-operation with leading countries and organisations was cited as key to keeping pace with the ever-changing threat landscape.Alsadi drew attention to the NCSA’s role in safeguarding personal data. Initiatives include educating users on their privacy rights, developing institutional training programmes, and adopting best practices based on international standards. Multiple reporting platforms are available for citizens to flag breaches swiftly, ensuring transparency and protection. The workshop also clarified how the NCSA and the Ministry of Interior work hand in hand. While the Agency focuses on awareness, prevention, and technical expertise, the Ministry investigates cybercrimes, gathers digital evidence, and coordinates with international bodies such as Interpol. Together, the two entities form a comprehensive shield for Qatar’s digital environment.Concluding the session, Alsadi urged participants to adopt a proactive stance. “Cybersecurity is not a one-off task but an ongoing responsibility,” he reminded. “Every click, every password, and every data transaction carries a risk — and also an opportunity to protect.”

Ryanair slashes winter seats in Spain over airport fees

Irish budget airline Ryanair Wednesday said it would slash more than 1mn winter seats in Spain over "excessive airport fees", sparking "extortion" accusations from the national airport operator. The row is the latest clash in an ongoing spat between the carrier and Spanish authorities that erupted last year after the leftist government fined Ryanair €107.8mn for "abusive practices" such as charging for hand luggage.Ryanair said in a statement that the cuts, which affect destinations including the popular Atlantic holiday island of Tenerife, were "due to excessive and uncompetitive airport fees" applied by state-owned airport operator Aena."These cuts will harm already vulnerable Spanish regional airports even more, and inevitably lead to a loss of investment, connectivity, tourism and jobs," Ryanair added, warning "many routes will be economically unviable".Aena chief executive Maurici Lucena retorted in a scathing statement that Spanish airports would "cease to function well" if they "evolved to the tune of the demands, whining, swindling and intolerable strategy of extortion of Ryanair".In January, the airline announced it was scrapping 800,000 seats on seven regional Spanish routes in response to Aena's airport fees.It has also dropped several French airports over a tax hike on air travel. In the past two years, the company has "tried to intimidate the public authorities of Germany, France, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United Kingdom", Lucena added. In response to last year's fine in Spain, Ryanair's group chief executive Michael O'Leary slammed Spain's far-left consumer rights minister Pablo Bustinduy as a "crazy communist".The firm then launched an advertising campaign that depicted the minister as a clown.Bustinduy has said "no pressure, no blackmail and no insult will stop me" in his defence of Spanish consumers against multinationals.

Singapore lists air turbulence as key safety risk in new report

Singapore has pledged to strengthen aviation safety practices around in-flight turbulence after two accidents last year that resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.Severe turbulence will now be classified as a state-level operational safety risk, alongside runway incursions, mid-air collisions and system failures, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said in its Singapore National Aviation Safety Plan for 2025-2027, released on Wednesday. The report identified 45 actions to bolster safety around operational and emerging risk areas. Of the accidents logged by Singapore in 2024, turbulence ranked as the highest. In an earlier safety plan for 2022-2024, turbulence was mentioned mainly in the context of training and operational awareness, not classified as a priority risk area in its own right. In May last year, one person died and scores of passengers suffered serious injuries when a Singapore Airlines Ltd flight from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence over Myanmar. In September, one passenger and one cabin crew were injured on a Guangzhou-bound flight that ran into turbulence over Hong Kong. Investors continue to probe the cause of the May accident. In the immediate aftermath of that first incident, airlines worked to implement a variety of measures including drilling flight crews on turbulence-related scenarios and enhancing forecasting and detection systems.Midair instability is becoming a more common hazard for carriers and passengers as rising global air traffic density means more planes flying in crowded skies, often through the same storm systems. Climate change is another factor: warming temperatures at cruising altitudes are strengthening jet streams and creating conditions linked to more frequent episodes of so-called “clear-air turbulence.”Some of the recommendations made by CAAS in its latest safety plan were around enhancing the accuracy of meteorological information, improving advance turbulence forecasting and on-board detection systems, sharing real-time turbulence data globally and adopting wider use of modern weather radar and turbulence awareness applications for pilots.“The recent spate of serious aviation safety incidents around the world is a timely reminder that we must stay vigilant and not take safety for granted,” Han Kok Juan, CAAS director-general, said. “The National Aviation Safety Plan is a call to action for the Singapore aviation sector to work together to ensure aviation safety as we position ourselves for growth.”
