Qatar, US play key role in stabilising European energy crisis: IGU

Qatar and the United States have played a key role in stabilising the European energy crisis due to the reduction of Russian piped gas supply, according to International Gas Union (IGU).“The 2022-2024 European energy crisis following the reduction of Russian piped gas supply was stabilised using LNG imports from the US and Qatar,” IGU said in its just released Global Gas Report 2025.Similarly, East Asian countries like Japan and South Korea rely on spot LNG purchases to balance seasonal fluctuations, establishing natural gas and LNG as tools for preventing deeper economic or social fallout through resilient and diversified supply, the report noted.Gas has proved itself a vital component of global energy security. LNG trade has historically offered cross-border flexibility to respond to shifting demand- supply dynamics during market uncertainties, it said.Amid rising demand, there is indication of growing LNG supply reinforcing natural gas’ role as a reliable fuel to meet expected shortfalls.Despite tightness in the near term, the global LNG market is expected to gradually ease over the next few years, and move into surplus as new supply comes online toward 2030.Around 270 bcm of approved or under construction liquefaction capacity is currently in the pipeline to be commissioned by 2030, primarily driven by projects in the US and Qatar. This marks a new growth phase following a prolonged period of stagnation, reflecting the inherently cyclical nature of the liquefaction sector. These cycles are driven by the capital-intensive nature of projects – typically costing around $0.75bn per bcm – and long development timelines, often spanning four to five years from FID to operation. To manage market risk, developers usually secure most of their capacity through long-term contracts.“Due to these factors, the LNG market is expected to remain broadly balanced, with limited opportunity for new developments in the short term and ample supply by 2030,” IGU said.Uncertainty surrounding the timing of LNG supply persists despite the expected surge associated with the next wave of LNG projects. In October 2024, TotalEnergies revised its forecast, now anticipating that the next wave of LNG supply will only come to market from 2027, two-years after the previously projected 2025 timeline. The supply outlook remains uncertain due to potential delays as well as regulatory, technical and financial risks to projects. While there is a potential for increased project FIDs as a result of US import tariffs, policies such as the sanctions on Russian LNG are set to strike a blow to global LNG supply as upcoming projects’ ability to acquire necessary equipment, secure vessels and find buyers is becoming increasingly limited.IGU said, “Disruptions to key LNG transit routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, increase shipping times and costs, undermining project economics and investor confidence. This may lead to slower FIDs for projects dependent on long-distance or chokepoint- exposed routes.”

Israeli aggression against Qatar's sovereignty transgressed all human tenets:  Arab League Sec General

The Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, condemned the Israeli crime of attacking Qatar's sovereignty as a grave violation of all human priciples and civilized norms - especially the long-standing rule against targeting mediators or negotiators.Addressing the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit today, Aboul-Gheit said the most dangerous thing in this aggression was that the perpetrator of the barbaric attack considered his act justified under any pretext, imagining he could slide into unprecedented levels of savagery and brazen violation of established norms with impunity.Attacking peaceful people, negotiators, and mediators has nothing to do with courage or honor; it is nothing but baseness and cowardice, while boasting and flaunting such acts reflects a level of moral decay rarely, if ever, seen in relations among nations, Aboul-Gheit highlighted. He affirmed that the summit did not convene merely to show solidarity with the State of Qatar, which is a duty for every Arab and Muslim whose conscience is stirred by the sight of this cowardly and despicable act, but also to send a clear message to the international community on the urgent need to end the silence toward the conduct of this rogue state, which has set the region ablaze, killed the innocent, and displaced and starved peaceful people to serve the personal ambitions of its leaders or their perverse ideologies, in a brazen attempt to return the world to the law of the jungle.Aboul-Gheit pointed out that silence in the face of criminality is itself a crime, and that remaining silent on violations of law undermines the entire international order, reminding that two full years of silence on the crimes in Gaza instilled in the occupation's leaders the belief that any act is possible, and any crime can go unpunished. They thus persisted in spreading destruction from one country to another, setting the entire region ablaze, as if the world had returned to the ages of barbarism and darkness after believing it had long left them behind, he said.Aboul-Gheit further stressed that those who lead the occupying state are liable before the International Criminal Court (ICC), and today have added a new crime to their record. He called on all defenders of law and principled actors across the world to unite in pursuing all war criminals accused of committing genocide in Gaza, and of violating the sovereignty of several states in the region and attacking them under pretexts and justifications with no foundation in any law or international charter. Finally, Aboul-Gheit delivered a message to the Israeli people, saying that what their government is doing in their name won't be forgotten, as crimes are indelible in minds, and that killing over 63,000 Palestinian people, in addition to displacing and starving them in Gaza, won't be forgotten. The recent aggression against the State of Qatar, which has long strived to reach agreements to halt the war and save lives, including their hostages, will not be forgotten either, he stressed.Aboul-Gheit warned that what the occupation government is doing in the name of the Israeli people devastates every foundation for peaceful coexistence in the region, putting future generations in a dark future in which violence and conflict prevail, stressing that it is a rogue government in the region and across the world.

Summit reflects solidarity with Qatar and affirms unity of Arab, Muslim Nations:  OIC Secretary-General

The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha affirmed that holding the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha is an occasion to renew sincere sentiments of sympathy and solidarity with the State of Qatar following the Israeli aggression, and an opportunity for Arab and Islamic nations to take a united and firm stance against this grave assault. In his address at the summit on Monday, he said that Qatar's initiative to convene the summit comes as a continuation of efforts and initiatives aimed at strengthening solidarity and cooperation, and unifying positions in defense of Arab and Islamic causes.OIC Secretary-General stressed that the organization strongly condemns the blatant violation of Qatar's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, underscoring that it is a flagrant breach of international law and the UN Charter. He reaffirmed OIC's full solidarity with Qatar and its complete support for all measures it deems necessary to safeguard its security and sovereignty. He called on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to assume its responsibilities in holding Israel accountable for its crimes and compelling it to halt its ongoing and dangerous aggressions. He noted that the Israeli attack on Qatar is an extension of the crimes of aggression against the Palestinian people, their land, and holy sites. He emphasized the importance of implementing Security Council resolutions, particularly those related to a ceasefire, sustained and adequate delivery of humanitarian aid across Gaza Strip, withdrawal of occupying forces, and enabling Hamas to assume its responsibilities in the strip.Secretary-General further reaffirmed OIC's support for the outcomes of the International Conference for Peaceful Settlement of Question of Palestine, and for the implementation of the two-state solution, which would allow the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate rights, foremost among them the right to self-determination, and to establish sovereignty along June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of their state, in line with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. He concluded by expressing confidence that the outcomes of the summit will contribute to strengthening Arab and Islamic solidarity with Qatar, and to unifying positions and efforts in the service of the causes of Muslim and Arab nations.

Take concrete steps to address Israel's madness of power: Amir

Israeli attack a blatant, treacherous, and cowardly aggressionIsrael assassinates negotiators and attacks mediating countryNetanyahu does not want the release of the captives, nor the Gaza war to endHis Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has inaugurated the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit at the Sheraton Doha Hotel. The summit convened with the participation of Their Highnesses and Excellencies the Arab and Islamic leaders, heads of state, and senior officials. His Highness the Amir, who chaired the session, delivered a speech. The following is the full text:In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, My brothers, Your Majesties, Excellencies and Highnesses, Your Excellencies, Honorable Audience, May the peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you. I welcome you to your home, Doha, and thank you for your responsiveness and interaction with the urgent invitation to convene this summit. My country's capital, Doha, where this summit is being held, was subjected to a treacherous attack targeting a residence housing the families of Hamas' political leadership and its negotiating delegation. This attack occurred in a residential neighborhood that includes schools and diplomatic missions. As a result of this aggression, six people were martyred, including a Qatari citizen serving in the Internal Security Forces, and 18 persons were injured. What he really wants is to make Gaza uninhabitable in order to displace its population. He believes in the so-called "Greater Israel," and he is exploiting the opportunity of war to expand settlements, change the status quo in the Holy Haram al-Sharif, tighten restrictions on the population in the West Bank, and plan to annex parts of it.The citizens and residents of this safe country were taken unawares, and the entire world was shocked along with them, not only because this aggression is a gross and grave violation of State's sovereignty and a trampling upon international conventions and norms, but also due to the special circumstances surrounding this cowardly terrorist act.For Qatar, a mediation state, which lies thousands of miles away from the place where the attacking aircraft took off, and which is exerting strenuous efforts for two years to reach a settlement that would stop the deadly and destructive war — being waged against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which has long since turned into a genocidal war — and to secure the release of the Israeli hostages.Doha has hosted, during these negotiations, delegations from Hamas and Israel. The mediation has already achieved — through cooperation with sisterly Egypt and the US of America — the release of 135 hostages in exchange for two truces in 2023 and 2025, and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Yet Israel has continued its war.We continued mediation in the hope of achieving a permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages, Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the release of Palestinian prisoners. When the treacherous attack occurred on September 9, the political leadership of Hamas was studying an American proposal that it had received from us and the Egyptians. It is obvious that Israel, which was supposed to be the other negotiating party, at least in the context of this mediation, was aware of this meeting being held in a well-known location frequented by diplomats, journalists, and others. Thus, decided to assassinate negotiators engaged in studying an American paper and preparing their response to it.Have you ever heard of anything like this before? A country that systematically and doggedly working to assassinate the very politicians it is negotiating with, and attacking the mediating country where the negotiations are taking place. If Israel wants to assassinate the political leadership of Hamas, then why does it negotiate with it? And if it wants to negotiate the release of the hostages, then why assassinate all those who could conduct negotiations with it? And how can we welcome Israeli delegations to our country for negotiations, when those who sent these delegations are plotting to bomb this country? These questions await no answer, but rather clarify why we say, unequivocally, that this aggression is in reality a blatant, treacherous, and cowardly. It is impossible to deal with such degree of malice and treachery. For there are simple, basic principles in human interaction, which even those provided with wisdom and courage necessary to engage in, can't expect that there are some who pay them no heed and to whom they mean nothing. The second truth which is evident to anyone with insight is that whoever works doggedly and systematically to assassinate the party he is negotiating with, intends to sabotage the negotiations. When he claims that their goal behind the negotiations is to free their detainees, his acts belie their claim. Releasing his soldiers and citizens is not among his priorities, and negotiations are merely part of the war, a political tactic coupled with the war, and a means to mislead Israeli public opinion. When public opinion pressures him, he sends a delegation to negotiate. He does so with one hand, while sabotaging the negotiations with the other. This has been his style up to now.If stopping the war is the price for freeing his hostages, he doesn't want them. What he really wants is to make Gaza uninhabitable in order to displace its population. He believes in the so-called "Greater Israel," and he is exploiting the opportunity of war to expand settlements, change the status quo in the Holy Haram al-Sharif, tighten restrictions on the population in the West Bank, and plan to annex parts of it.The government of Israel believes it places the Arabs before a fait accompli each time, then follows them with new ones, so they drop the old and negotiate over the new.The third truth made clear by this treacherous attack on our sovereignty is that the Israeli prime minister, who boasts that he has changed the face of the Middle East in the last two years, truly intends that Israel intervene wherever and whenever it wishes. He dreams that the Arab region becomes an Israeli sphere of influence. This is a dangerous delusion. The government of extremist settlers wants the dispatch of Israeli air power for bombing in the countries of the region to become a routine matter. In Lebanon, the acceptance by the Lebanese government of an American paper is met with bombings and assassinations, and Israel seeks to drag it into a civil war to stop its aggressions against it. As for Syria, that same prime minister openly declares there is no negotiation over the occupied Golan. He speaks and acts as though the areas south of Damascus are practically influence zones for Israel which works towards the partition of Syria. We are confident that these schemes will not pass.Honorable Audience, Israel claims it is a democracy surrounded by enemies, while in reality it is building a regime of occupation and apartheid hostile to its surroundings, and waging a genocidal war during which crimes, that know no red flags, have been committed. Its prime minister has declared, days ago, that he prevented the establishment of a Palestinian State, and that such a state will not be established in the future. He is hostile to the Palestinian Authority, and opposes the agreements by which this Authority was incepted. Is the Palestinian Authority hostile to Israel? Two neighboring States signed peace agreements with Israel and abided thereof, and two other States remain committed to the Arab Peace Initiative and seek a settlement through which their occupied lands may be restored. If Israel had accepted the Arab Peace Initiative, it would have spared the region and itself countless tragedies. Israel is not only rejecting peace with its surroundings, but rather wants to impose its will upon them. And whoever objects to that, will be portrayed in its false propaganda- which no one believes anymore- as either a terrorist or antisemitic, while at the same time the far-right government in Israel practices terrorist and racist policies. Each one of these three truths deserves that we shouldn't be contended with merely holding an emergency summit, but that we take concrete steps to address the state of madness of power, arrogance, and bloodthirstiness obsession that has befallen the government of Israel, and what resulted and continues to result from it: First, the insistence on continuing a genocidal war, displacement, and settlement expansion in Palestine. Second, the blatant intervention in the sovereignty of Arab States; and third and finally, the treacherous aggression against my safe country- a peace broker that has dedicated its diplomacy to resolving conflicts by peaceful means, and which for that receives appreciation and respect everywhere. For our part, we are determined to do everything necessary and permissible to us by international law, to preserve our sovereignty and confront this Israeli aggression.I reiterate my welcome to you, and thank you once again. I wish this summit success in taking practical and decisive steps that would satisfy our consciences and peoples.May peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.The opening ceremony was attended by HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, a number of Their Excellencies the Ministers, members of delegations, assistant secretaries, representatives of regional and international organizations, and summit guests.

PSG maintain perfect start, Ethan Mbappe strikes late for Lille

A Bradley Barcola brace earned Paris Saint-Germain a 2-0 win over Lens in Ligue 1 on Sunday, while Kylian Mbappe’s brother Ethan scored deep into second-half added time to give Lille a last-gasp victory. The result sent PSG back to the top of the table as the reigning champions secured their fourth win from four outings this term. However, the match threw up some injury headaches for coach Luis Enrique ahead of the start of PSG’s Champions League defence next week, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Lee Kang-in and Lucas Beraldo all limping off.Barcola sent PSG ahead on the quarter-hour with an elegant curling finish from 20 yards.New PSG signing Illya Zabarnyi came close to turning into his own net on 27 minutes following a rare Lens foray forward. But things did then go wrong for the dominant hosts as star winger Kvaratskhelia was forced off two minutes later with a calf issue, casting a doubt over his presence on Wednesday as PSG open their Champions League title defence against Atalanta.Barcola doubled PSG’s lead six minutes after half-time when he drove in from the left before arrowing a right-footed finish from distance past the dive of goalkeeper Robin Risser. But PSG’s injury woes accumulated in the second period when first midfielder Lee, then defender Beraldo had to be replaced.Earlier in Lille, 18-year-old Ethan Mbappe volleyed home eight minutes into injury time to give Lille a 2-1 home win over Toulouse despite the hosts being a goal down as the clock ticked past 90. A penalty at the very start of injury time converted by Nabil Bentaleb had brought the hosts level before Mbappe lashed home a late winner. Both goals came courtesy of late substitutes introduced by coach Bruno Genesio, after Toulouse were reduced to 10 men on 80 minutes.Following his departure from PSG in the wake of his elder brother Kylian’s acrimonious free transfer to Real Madrid, Mbappe joined Lille in July last year. The midfielder’s first strike for the 2020/21 Ligue 1 winners came on his 11th league appearance as he ghosted in at the far post to thrash Osame Sahraoui’s stood-up cross past the helpless visiting goalkeeper.“Last year was a bit of a difficult year for me, with a lot of injuries,” said Mbappe. “Coming back with a goal, honestly, there’s no better way to start a new season.”Frank Magri opened the scoring for Toulouse early in the second period before Lille’s late show. The last-gasp win provisionally took Lille to the top of the Ligue 1 table, on 10 points, before PSG won to knock them down to second. Lyon, the only other club to boast a 100 percent record in Ligue 1 this season, could take top spot with a victory in the weekend’s final match away to Rennes.Elsewhere, Liam Rosenior’s youthful Strasbourg side grabbed a 1-0 win at home to Le Havre thanks to Joaquin Panichelli’s 92nd-minute spot-kick. Paris FC claimed their second win of the campaign, holding out 2-1 at last-placed Brest, while Metz drew 1-1 with Angers.

Anti-Israel protests force early end to Vuelta a Espana cycle race

Protests target Israeli team over Gaza conflictPM Pedro Sanchez expresses admiration for protestersPro-Palestinian protests forced the Vuelta a Espana cycle race to be abandoned at its finale on Sunday, with Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard declared winner as police sought to quell demonstrations against an Israeli team's participation.Protesters chanting "they will not pass" overturned metal barriers and occupied the Vuelta (Tour of Spain) route at several points in Madrid as police attempted to push them back."The race is over," said a spokesperson for the organisers, who also cancelled the podium ceremony, leaving Vingegaard celebrating in the back of his team car.Earlier, Spain's Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed "admiration for the Spanish people mobilising for just causes like Palestine" by protesting during the race. The demonstrations have targeted the Israel-Premier Tech team over Israel's actions in Gaza. Some riders had threatened to quit last week as routes were blocked, causing some falls.Seven Israeli chess players withdrew from a Spanish tournament starting on Friday after organisers told them they would not be competing under their flag, citing the Gaza conflict and expressing solidarity with the Palestinians. On Sunday in Madrid, more than 1,000 police officers were on duty as cyclists reached the final stage of the 21-day race - the biggest deployment since the Spanish capital hosted the NATO summit three years ago.Police held back a crowd of hundreds bearing placards and waving Palestinian flags for several hours as the cyclists snaked their way through towns and villages towards Madrid. As the riders drew closer to the capital, the demonstrators hurled plastic bottles and traffic cones, upended blue barriers and surged onto the road. Baton-wielding riot police fired smoke bombs to try to disperse them.PM Sanchez has repeatedly clashed with Israel over its war in Gaza, describing it as genocide.Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, last year recognised a Palestinian state, prompting an angry response from Israel, which said it amounted to a "reward for terrorism".This week, Sanchez announced a block on oil and arms to Israel. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused his Spanish counterpart of antisemitism and making genocidal threats. It is the first time one of cycling's Grand Tours has been prevented from completing its final stage by political demonstrators since the Vuelta in 1978 was halted by Basque separatists in San Sebastian.Health Minister Monica Garcia said the latest protests showed Spain was a "global beacon in the defence of human rights.""The people of Madrid join dozens of demonstrations across the country and peacefully bring to a halt the end of a cycling race that should never have been used to whitewash genocide," Garcia said in a post on Bluesky.A government source defended Sanchez's comments, saying: "The prime minister has shown his admiration for the Spanish people for being brave when others look the other way from the genocide in Gaza."

Seville and Jefferson-Wooden enjoy maiden world titles, US savour field of gold

Oblique Seville and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden recorded their first major victories in winning the men's and women's 100m world titles Sunday, making it honours even between sprint powerhouses Jamaica and the United States. It was a good night in Tokyo for the Americans as two of their outstanding field athletes, Olympic champions Tara Davis-Woodhall and Valarie Allman, won the women's long jump and discus respectively. For Allman it filled a yawning space in her burgeoning medals cabinet -- a world title. There was a once-in-a-blue-moon ending in the men's 10,000m as Europe got the better of the cream of African distance running -- France's Jimmy Gressier took the honours. It was a first victory over the distance for a European since Somalia-born Briton Mo Farah in 2017 - he also won in 2013 and 2015. Italian Alberto Cova won the event at the inaugural edition of the worlds in 1983.Seville secured Jamaica's first men's world 100m title in 10 years leading home a Jamaican 1-2. The onwatching Usain Bolt did the sprint double at the 2015 worlds in Beijing. As Seville ripped his vest in celebration, teammate Kishane Thompson, who had to settle for silver as he did at the Olympics last year, embraced him.Olympic and defending world champion Noah Lyles was third.Seville had finished fourth in the two previous world finals but the 24-year-old said he had always retained belief in himself even if others had not."A lot of people are saying that I am panicking (in the last two finals). I don't know what they are talking about," he said."But I have proved myself that I am a champion and I hope that they can see that Oblique Seville is actually competitive and a warrior."Jefferson-Wooden succeeded her training partner Sha'Carri Richardson as world champion -- the latter finished fifth.Jefferson-Wooden -- who took bronze in the Olympic final last year behind Julien Alfred, who could only finish third on Sunday -- timed a new championship record of 10.61sec.The 24-year-old and Richardson are coached by the controversial former sprinter Dennis Mitchell, who served a doping ban as an athlete.Jefferson-Wooden said it had taken her some time to learn how to cope with the stresses and strains at major championships."I have been dreaming of this moment," she added."Instead of putting the pressure on myself and taking it as something overwhelming, I was just embracing it."That (change) was worth the gold medal tonight."She will bid to achieve the sprint double in the 200m later in the championships.'Felt incomplete'The race may be recalled in the years to come as the last individual global final contested by 38-year-old Jamaican legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who finished sixth. She said: "It's a surreal moment to know that 18 years ago I started as an athlete that wasn't sure what I wanted to do or who I was, and to be here in this moment continuing... to push the limits and finish on your own terms."Allman, twice a minor medallist at the worlds stamped her authority on the other finalists from the first throw of 67.63 metres and rammed home her superiority home in the fifth round with 69.48m.The former dancer raised her arms in celebration once victory was confirmed, and ran with a beaming smile to her coach in the stands."I didn''t realise before how much I wanted to become the world champion," she said."There was a part of me that felt incomplete."Allman, who took silver two years ago and bronze in 2022, conceded she had felt the pressure keenly going in to the final."The nerves hit me but now everything has fallen off my shoulders," she said."I keep looking at this medal and can''t believe it's real."Davis-Woodhall followed up Olympic gold with a long jump world title, outclassing the field with a leap of 7.13m.Gressier, 28, was like a terrier snapping at the heels of the Ethiopians on the final lap and the 28-year-old's final bite was the killer blow."This is a child's dream come true," he said.
