QNB Group has been named ‘Sustainable Lender of the Year’ at the 2026 Middle East Transition Finance Awards, organised by Environmental Finance. Selected by an independent panel of industry experts, the award recognises QNB Group’s leadership in advancing sustainable finance and its commitment to supporting economic growth across the region. By the end of 2025, QNB Group’s sustainable financing portfolio reached approximately $11.34bn, representing a 21% year-on-year increase. This growth was driven by expansion across green, social, and sustainability-linked loans, alongside increased participation in sustainable syndications, with the group involved in approximately $20bn of sustainability-linked loan transactions. Green loans increased to $4.1bn, social loans reached $5.0bn, and sustainability-linked loans grew to $1.4bn, reflecting continued alignment of financing activities with sustainability objectives. The recognition reflects QNB Group’s continued efforts to integrate sustainability across its business activities and value chain. The group has made meaningful progress in expanding its sustainable finance portfolio and supporting clients’ transition journeys across key sectors, underpinned by a disciplined approach, robust frameworks, and alignment with international best practices.QNB Group’s sustainable finance activities are guided by its Sustainable Finance and Product Framework, aligned with international principles and best practices. The group has also demonstrated leadership in climate risk management, becoming the first bank in Qatar to announce a Net Zero 2050 ambition and among the first in the region to align its disclosures with International Financial Reporting Standards sustainability requirements, including independently assured, group-wide Scope 3 financed emissions. The recognition underscores QNB Group’s commitment to embedding sustainability at the core of its strategy, supporting clients in their transition to a low-carbon economy, and contributing to long-term value creation in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the development of a more sustainable economy.

Qatar Insurance reported a net profit of QR217mn in Q1 2026, up 6% year-on-year (y-o-y) from QR205mn, according to Qatar Insurance Group chairman Sheikh Hamad bin Faisal bin Thani Jasim al-Thani.Sheikh Hamad told the board of directors’ meeting that net profit attributable to shareholders of the parent amounted to QR205mn. Earnings per share for the period stood at QR0.030.The company’s well-diversified investment portfolio again proved its merits and resilience in Q1 2026. In an exceptionally volatile market environment, Qatar Insurance’s high-quality book generated solid investment income of QR238mn in Q1 2026, compared to QR216mn in the same period last year.Return on Investment for Q1 2026 came in at 5.3%, compared to 4.9% in Q1 2025. The book, which is mainly composed of a stable and conservative combination of bonds, cash, equities, and real estate, amounted to assets under management of QR18bn in Q1 2026, up from QR17.7bn in Q1 2025.Gross Written Premiums (GWP) totalled QR3.2bn, up by 13% y-o-y, while Insurance Service Result stood at QR130mn in Q1 2026, reflecting a significant 70% y-o-y increase.Despite the ongoing challenges, overall in Q1 2026, Qatar Insurance generated 56% of its GWPs in its domestic and MENA operations, with 44% stemming from its international business.Sheikh Hamad said the company’s Q1 2026 financial results confirm its resilience and strategic direction.“In a turbulent first quarter marked by the conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Qatar Insurance’s underwriting portfolio continued to generate consistent, stable, and reliable returns due to its robust diversification strategy of balancing our strong growth business generated in Qatar and the MENA region, with income from our international operations and investment portfolio, which once again provided a strong contribution to our results in highly volatile financial markets,” he said.Salem al-Mannai, Qatar Insurance Group CEO, said: “Despite this challenging first quarter, Qatar Insurance further expanded its products and services in Qatar, the MENA region with our presence in Dubai, Oman and Kuwait, and internationally through our Antares Lloyds Syndicate along with operations in Bermuda, Europe and Asia Pacific.“Whilst already benefiting from our regional spread, we further built our diversification and strengthened our resilience through a well-balanced product portfolio, generating attractive growth and returns with our personal non-life, life and medical book, and our commercial lines business in Qatar and the Mena region, and internationally in marine and other speciality lines through our reinsurance book.”He added: “We further strengthened our investments in technology, particularly during this period of uncertainty and disruption. Our pioneering role in insurtech and fintech, along with our award-winning app for motorists, has proven invaluable in maintaining seamless services for our customers.”

Qatar’s maritime sector recorded solid growth in April, with Mwani Qatar reporting a notable increase in cargo and vessel activity across the country’s main ports.Official figures for April show that container handling volumes rose by 14% compared to March this year, underscoring continued momentum in Qatar's logistics and trade sectors.According to data released by Mwani Qatar, a total of 50,738 (standard containers) twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) were processed last month, reflecting stronger demand for containerised shipping linked to both imports and re-exports.The rise aligns with broader regional trends, where Gulf ports have been expanding capacity and efficiency to capture growing trade flows between Asia, Europe, and Africa.The number of vessels calling at Qatar’s ports also increased during the month, climbing by 9% or 93 ships.This uptick highlights Qatar’s expanding connectivity and its ability to attract a diverse range of maritime traffic, including container ships, bulk carriers, and livestock vessels.General and bulk cargo volumes together exceeded 19,000 tonnes.Mwani’s figures indicate that 10,437 tonnes of general cargo, comprising a wide range of goods, such as machinery, construction materials, and consumer products, among others, were handled during the same period.Meanwhile, bulk cargo volumes reached approximately 8,600 tonnes, including commodities, such as collections, grains, and industrial raw materials.The livestock segment also saw considerable activity, with Qatar’s ports receiving 9,379 heads of cattle in April.This reflects the country’s ongoing efforts to ensure food security and maintain diversified supply chains, particularly for essential goods.Livestock imports remain a critical component of Qatar’s broader strategy to stabilise domestic markets and meet consumption needs.Operations across the country’s three main ports – Hamad Port, Al Ruwais Port, and Old Doha Port – were cited as key contributors to the overall performance.Each facility plays a distinct role within Qatar’s maritime ecosystem.Hamad Port, the nation’s flagship deep-water port, handles the majority of containerised and large-scale cargo traffic and is equipped with advanced automated systems designed to streamline operations.Al Ruwais Port, located in the north, primarily serves regional trade routes and supports smaller vessels, including those involved in coastal shipping and fishing industries.Meanwhile, Old Doha Port has increasingly evolved into a mixed-use terminal, accommodating cruise tourism alongside limited cargo handling, contributing to both economic diversification and urban renovation efforts.In recent years Mwani Qatar has implemented smart port technologies aimed at reducing turnaround times and improving cargo tracking.These measures are part of a broader national agenda to position Qatar as a regional logistics hub under the Qatar National Vision 2030 framework.Further, the resilience of Qatar’s ports continues to be reinforced by diversified trade partnerships and the country’s strategic geographic location along key maritime routes.Since the commissioning of Hamad Port in 2017, Qatar has significantly introduced more direct shipping links with major global markets, such as India, China and Europe, which has increased the country's role in facilitating regional trade.The expansion of shipping routes and the introduction of new feeder services have enhanced connectivity, making Qatari ports more attractive for international shipping companies seeking efficient Gulf distribution points.

Qatar Airways announced the return of passenger flights to Baghdad (BGW), Basra (BSR), and Erbil (EBL) in Iraq, starting on May 10, 2026, as the airline continues to reinstate its network across the Middle East.In a statement Saturday, Qatar Airways also announced that it will reintroduce freighter services to Baghdad from May 7, 2026, further supporting cargo flows.These resumptions follow the airline's recent announcements confirming the return of daily passenger services to Dubai (DXB) and Sharjah (SHJ), and to Bahrain (BAH), Damascus (DAM) and Kozhikode (CCJ), providing passengers with greater flexibility and enhanced connectivity across the region and beyond.Qatar Airways is advancing the phased restoration of its global network, with its flight schedule expanding from June 16, 2026 to more than 150 destinations across six continents.Qatar Airways advised passengers to regularly check its official website or app, and ensure their contact details are correct and updated. It added that flight schedules are subject to change or cancellation due to operational, regulatory, safety, or other circumstances beyond its control. 

Ministry of Transport Announces Full Resumption of Maritime Navigation Activities as of Saturday. MoT urged all owners of marine vessels and sea users to ensure that safety and security equipment is available before and during sailing, in order to safeguard everyone’s safety and to ensure the highest standards of security and safety for all maritime journeys.

The State of Qatar has reiterated the importance of eliminating racism and racial discrimination in all its forms, highlighting steps taken to promote equality, tolerance and social cohesion. The statement was delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva, Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi, during an informal meeting of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination with states parties to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. She said the State of Qatar had adopted policies and plans aimed at fostering an inclusive and safe society free from intolerance, hatred and discrimination, stressing that racism contravenes international and national laws and norms. Al Suwaidi also emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality, objectivity and mutual respect in the committee's work, noting that such principles strengthen trust in international mechanisms and ensure their effectiveness. She warned against approaches that could fuel division or justify exclusion based on race or origin, particularly amid current regional and global challenges, and called for preserving constructive dialogue and cooperation in addressing related issues

Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has provided an assistance of approximately QR50mn for the treatment of about 1,750 cancer patients in 2025 in Qatar, disclosed the chairman of the society. “In 2025 alone we have provided financial support worth QR49mn for approximately 1,750 adult and paediatric patients. Cancer treatment is very expensive and some of our non-Qatari colleagues living here, have certain difficulties in covering expenses,” His Excellency Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jaber al-Thani told Gulf Times in a recent interview. Sheikh Khalid said that QCS is taking care of the patients who have difficulty in meeting the expenses for the treatment and the society has made the system simpler and more accessible for people to apply for the assistance. “Recently we won an award for the whole process from His Highness the Amir. We have an application called ‘Wayyakom’ and through this, people can apply for the support from QCS. It is a platform that people can use to fill in the application. They can upload all the required documents and if everything is fine it will be approved by the system within 24-48 hours,” he explained. He noted that if the application is approved, and the financial aid or any assistance is provided, it will be shown in the application within the time period. The QCS chairman noted that 2025 marked a significant milestone in the journey of the organisation as it continued to translate its vision into tangible achievements through a comprehensive package of initiatives and services targeting patients, survivors, and the wider community. “Additionally, 1,200 individuals directly benefited from psychological and social support programmes, while indirect beneficiaries exceeded 40,000, alongside specialised individual psychological support services provided to 50 survivors,” he stated. According to the QCS chairman, in the field of community awareness, QCS has implemented specialised campaigns and programmes through its Cancer Awareness Centre, the first of its kind in the Middle East. In 2025, more than 6.65mn indirect beneficiaries were served, in addition to 18,950 direct beneficiaries through workshops, programmes, and field awareness activities. “On a daily basis, we have groups of people getting their training in Qatar Cancer Society. They are getting trained in cancer treatment programmes. We have a programme with the Primary Health Care Corporation, Hama d Medical Corporation as well as with Sidra Medicine. They keep sending their people for training with us,” he noted. “We have training programme meant for nursing staff. We also have programmes for physicians, health educators and health specialists. So all these programmes are going in tandem or in synchronisation with the respective institutions,” added Sheikh Khalid. 

Alqaqaa bin Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani claimed top honours in the Amateur class as the 12th round of the Longines Hathab Qatar Equestrian Tour began at the main arena of the Qatar Equestrian Federation Thursday. Riding Bon Suela, Alqaqaa delivered a flawless performance to win the Table A, special two-phase 100cm class in a time of 29.78 seconds. Poland’s Milena Werla aboard Nevada de Beauty finished second in 30.11, while Nasser Hamad al-Thani secured third with Equinoxe de l’Aulne in 30.17. Mohammed Saleh al-Marri, Head of the Facilities and Logistics Committee, presented the awards to the top three riders. In the Silver Tour accumulator with joker (130cm), Kuwait’s Madhy Alkhamees took victory in 52.18 seconds riding Caheelah de Beaufour. Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Alasaker on Cassiano II finished second in 53.56 secs, while Qatar’s Abdulaziz Khalid al-Bukhari placed third aboard Ganges Loca with 65/58.34. The winners were crowned by Saeed Hamad al-Rashdi, Deputy Director of the tournament. The Hathab series, organised by the Qatar Equestrian Federation in partnership with Al Shaqab, comprises 14 rounds.
