Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will attend the funeral of the late Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei this week, the South Asian nation's foreign ministry said on Thursday."The Prime Minister, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, will go to Iran and Turkey from 3-5 July... he will go to Iran first for (the) supreme leader's funeral," ministry spokesman Tahir Andrabi told reporters.Pakistan has been mediating between the United States and Iran to end the regional war which began in February with US-Israeli strikes that killed the 86-year-old Iranian supreme leader in Tehran.Andrabi reiterated earlier statements from Pakistan and fellow mediator Qatar that US-Iranian indirect talks in Doha this week had made progress and another meeting could take place after Khamenei's funeral.The public funeral will begin on Saturday, with his body lying in state at the colossal complex in central Tehran that hosts major Friday prayers, official ceremonies and religious gatherings.Pakistan shares deep historic ties with Iran. The two share a 900-kilometre (560-mile) border and cultural links, with Sunni-majority Pakistan home to the world's second-largest Shia population after Iran.Sharif's trip to Turkey would involve meetings with Turkish leadership and businesspeople, Andrabi said.

The State of Qatar won several awards at the International Forum of Arab Women in Diplomacy, organized by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States at its headquarters in Cairo Monday, in cooperation with the Arab Council for Social Responsibility, coinciding with the International Day of Arab Women Diplomats. Her Excellency Minister of Education and Higher Education Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater was awarded the Arab Woman Excellence Shield for Social Responsibility 2026 in recognition of her leadership at the national, regional, and international levels in supporting education and society, and as an inspiring model of Arab women's leadership. The award was received on her behalf by Counselor at the Embassy of the State of Qatar to the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the League of Arab States Khalid Abdullah Al Ibrahim. In the same context, Director of the Department of Private Schools and Kindergartens at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Dr. Rania Yousri Mohammed was honored with the Arab Woman Social Responsibility Award 2026 for the Social Responsibility Project in Private Schools and Kindergartens. Dr. Mohammed told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that Qatar's experience in this field was presented to Arab countries to exchange expertise and promote a culture of social responsibility and solidarity among schools, students, parents, and relevant ministries. She expressed hope that the project would help provide equitable, high-quality educational opportunities for all students in Qatar's private schools, enhancing education quality and supporting community development goals. Her Excellency Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti also received the Arab Woman Social Responsibility Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to parliamentary and community work and her efforts to promote the values of social responsibility. The award was received on her behalf by Khalid Abdullah Al Ibrahim. The forum also honored Minister Plenipotentiary, Deputy Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Egypt and Deputy Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States Maryam Ahmed Al Shibi, in recognition of her distinguished efforts in supporting diplomatic work, strengthening joint Arab cooperation, promoting social responsibility, and empowering women in diplomacy. In a statement to QNA, Al Shibi expressed her pride in the recognition, saying it reflects appreciation for Qatari women and Qatar's approach to empowering women and enhancing their participation in decision-making in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. She added that the award serves as motivation to continue serving communities and strengthening the role of Arab women in peacebuilding and sustainable development, dedicating the honor to Arab women in general and Qatari women in particular. The forum was attended by a distinguished group of regional and international diplomatic leaders, decision-makers, and representatives of development and media organizations.

Qatar, represented by the Qatar Mission to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), attended the 13th Session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR 13), held at the IMO headquarters in London from June 22-26. The NCSR 13 advanced maritime safety by updating digital navigation standards, revising performance requirements for S&R (search and rescue) equipment, and integrating modernised communications into global shipping. The Qatari team underlined the importance of cementing international cooperation in navigation and S&R.  

International rescue and relief teams have continued to arrive in Venezuela, two days after twin earthquakes devastated the capital, Caracas, and surrounding areas, killing at least 589 people and injuring 2,980, according to local authorities.Officials said hundreds of people remain missing or trapped beneath the rubble. A website set up to receive reports of missing persons had registered around 50,000 reports by Friday morning.The US Geological Survey has estimated that the death toll could eventually exceed 10,000, which would make the twin earthquakes among the deadliest to hit Latin America in the past century.Interim President Delcy Rodriguez's government has pledged a large-scale relief effort, deploying firefighters, police, civil defense teams and the military to affected areas.The neighboring coastal city of La Guaira was among the worst-hit areas, with at least 100 buildings, including high-rise residential blocks, collapsing. Homes also collapsed in the coastal state of Carabobo, where residents faced widespread power and water outages as families tried to salvage their belongings.The two earthquakes, measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck about 160km (100 miles) west of Caracas on Wednesday, which was a public holiday.

The director of the GCC-Criminal Information Centre to Combat Drugs (GCC-CICCD), Colonel Mohammed Abdullah al-Khater, said that the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, marked annually on June 26, is an important occasion to renew commitment to protecting societies from drugs and assessing efforts to strengthen community security and safeguard youth. He said that Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) states are observing the day amid rapid security and health changes, relying on integrated regional and national efforts under the GCC Anti-Drug Strategy (2025-28), which provides a comprehensive framework to unify member states’ efforts in confronting the drug threat. Al-Khater said the strategy focuses on reducing drug supply and demand, cutting off sources, promoting alternative development, strengthening legislation, combating money laundering from drug trafficking, and enhancing training and capacity-building to improve preventive, security, and treatment responses. He noted that this year’s global theme World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses, reflects current challenges, stressing that the drug threat is no longer limited to traditional smuggling methods but has extended into the digital space and social media platforms used to target youth and promote drugs. Al-Khater added that the GCC-CICCD has developed advanced electronic monitoring tools to curb online promotion, track and block suspicious accounts, and conduct joint security operations and controlled deliveries to target transnational criminal networks. He also said that the centre supports GCC security work through studies and research to unify procedures among member states. The official added that the GCC-CICCD regularly organises training programmes for anti-drug and customs personnel in GCC states, in co-operation with regional and international partners, universities, and research centres, to enhance expertise in combating evolving criminal methods.

The UN International Maritime Organization paused its programme to shepherd ​ships and seafarers through the Strait ‌of Hormuz on Thursday after a cargo ship reported a suspected attack, reigniting fears ‌over a preliminary deal to ⁠end the Iran war. The ‌ship said it was hit close to ‌Oman by a projectile, British navy agency UKMTO said, hours after Tehran warned vessels against taking routes that ⁠it had not approved. There was no immediate comment from Iran or the United States on the incident. Four sources identified the ship as the Singapore-flagged Ever Lovely. A security source said it was likely targeted by a drone. The IMO was helping to get hundreds of stranded ships and thousands of seafarers out of the strait where they had been stranded for months since the start of the war in late February. It said it had decided "to temporarily pause its implementation ​in order to reconfirm that the necessary safety guarantees continue to be in place for the ships on our evacuation list and all those in the region," IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez said in a statement. The IMO said the ‌ship involved in the suspected attack ⁠was not part of its ​evacuation programme. The initiative, which was launched on Tuesday, was a voluntary option for ships and ​their crew to sail out of the Gulf using two routes - one via Iranian waters and the other via Omani waters, with US oversight, the IMO said this week. Benchmark oil prices rose 1.9% following the reported attack, which analysts said rekindled concerns about how long it could take for Gulf oil flows to resume normal levels. The Oman incident is likely to refocus attention on the extent of Iran's future control over the Strait of Hormuz which, before the conflict,handled a fifth of the world's daily oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Before the incident, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio - wrapping up a tourof the Gulf to reassure states about the interim pact - told reporters that if ‌Iran threatens or blocks ships in the ‌strait, "then we're going to have a problem." Iran, ⁠though, has signalled it would continue to assert control over the strait. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Thursday ⁠that safe passage through the strait would only ⁠be possible through routes designated by Iran, adding that it would take action against vessels that failed to comply. Earlier, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said shipments through the strait were approaching levels seen before the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, with at least 20 million barrels of oil exiting the strait in the previous 24 hours. During the conflict, Iran took effective control of the vital chokepoint, disrupting oil flows ​and rattling global energy markets and the wider economy. The war is weighing heavily on US President Donald Trump ahead of November mid-term elections that will determine control of Congress. Just one in four Americans believes the war was worth the cost, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed. Conflicting accounts have emerged over elements of the framework ceasefire deal, which has prompted criticism of Trump at home and abroad. Disagreements persist over financial incentives for Iran, nuclear inspections, control of the Strait of Hormuz and Israel's parallel war in Lebanon. Iran's top negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, said on Thursday that the US assertion that Iran would spend its unfrozen assets to buy US agricultural ‌products was false. The deal sets ​up 60 days of talks to tackle thornier issues, including Iran's nuclear programme.

France recorded its hottest day ever since records began in 1947, as a severe heatwave affects much of Western Europe, according to the national weather service.The national heat index reached 29.8°C, based on 30 monitoring stations. Extreme temperatures were reported across western France, including 43.3°C in Cazaux, 42.2°C in Niort, 42.1°C in Bordeaux, 41.3°C in Rennes, and 44.3°C in Biscarosse.Meteorologists warned that high temperatures of 40°C to 42°C are expected to continue through the week, with unusually warm nights as well.Authorities said the heatwave could rival or exceed the intensity of the 2003 event, which caused around 15,000 deaths in France, though its duration is still unclear.France's previous record was 29.4°C, set in 2003 and 2019. Officials have taken emergency measures, including early closures of landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum. 

Oman said on Tuesday it ‌had coordinated with ​the International ‌Maritime Organization (IMO) ‌to ⁠provide ‌a temporary ‌maritime corridor ⁠for vessels seeking to transit the Strait of Hormuz, state news agency reported.The ​vessels wanting to use the temporary ‌corridor would ⁠need to ​coordinate with the ​IMO, based on coordinates announced by the organisation and Omani authorities, it added.The measure was ‌aimed at ‌ensuring ⁠freedom of ⁠navigation through ⁠the strategic waterway in line with international law and the law ​of the sea, which uphold freedom of navigation without imposing transit fees.

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi received His Excellency Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and his accompanying delegation at Muscat International Airport Tuesday, at the start of an official working visit to Oman.The visit comes as Doha and Muscat — two Gulf capitals that have long favoured quiet diplomacy over confrontation — look to deepen a partnership that has steadily gained weight amid a turbulent regional landscape. Both have carved out reputations as careful mediators, and their alignment on questions of de-escalation and dialogue has lent their co-operation a significance beyond the bilateral.The visit reflects the close fraternal ties between Oman and Qatar and aims to strengthen co-operation and co-ordination across a range of areas of mutual interest.
