Teenager Kimi Antonelli extended his lead in the drivers' world championship with a commanding and nerveless victory for Mercedes ahead of Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton in a protracted, incident-hit Monaco Grand Prix Sunday.It was the 19-year-old Italian's record fifth consecutive victory this season, making him the first Italian to achieve that feat since Alberto Ascari in 1952. It hoisted him 66 points clear of Hamilton in the title race."The car was a peach today," he said after becoming the youngest winner of Formula One's classic blue riband event."An incredible day - one of those when we had incredible pace to give me confidence to push."In a stoppage-strewn race punctuated by crashes, retirements and a series of penalties, Antonelli came home 6.271 seconds clear of seven-time champion Hamilton with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar third ahead of Oscar Piastri of McLaren.Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad finished a career-best fifth and sixth respectively, while Sergio Perez in 10th scored the new Cadillac team's first point.Hamilton equalled Ayrton Senna's record total of eight Monaco podiums.Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull suffered an engine failure at the start and retired, as did world champion Lando Norris when his McLaren had battery problems.Antonelli made a perfect getaway. Behind him, Verstappen had a power failure as he attempted to start."What can I do?" asked Verstappen. "Just bring it home," came the Red Bull reply. His problem was diagnosed as engine failure. It was his eighth first-lap retirement.For Antonelli, the youngest-ever pole sitter in Monaco, his dream start enabled a run in clear air to establish a lead of 5.4 seconds by lap 10.Norris had a lap one setback when, after squabbling with Piastri for sixth, he was passed by Pierre Gasly on the outside of St Devote.In the first round of pit stops, Hamilton was one of several drivers given a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit-lane.After revelling in his supremacy, Antonelli came in a second time after 37 laps, easily retaining his lead before Norris's problems ended with a call to retire on lap 46.The young Italian was racing with such ease that race engineer Peter Bonington told him: "Kimi, fastest lap! No, we don't need them."'No rear brakes'On lap 60, Lance Stroll smacked the barriers at Antony Noghes to prompt a safety car.The race re-started on lap 66 and, as Antonelli pulled clear with Hamilton in pursuit, the luckless Leclerc crashed at the same spot."I'm not taking the blame for that," he said. "It's like I had no rear brakes at all."That lifted Hadjar into third place before a second red flag suspended the action, with the field called back to wait in the pit lane as the track was repaired and Russell was given a drive-through penalty for failing to serve an earlier time penalty correctly.After a 40-minute hiatus, the action resumed from a standing start.Antonelli held his nerve to lead again with Hamilton second ahead of Russell, who promptly pitted for his penalty and fell to 14th. 

World championship leading teenager Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable run of successes on Saturday by claiming pole position for Mercedes ahead of four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.The 19-year-old Italian clocked one minute and 12.051 seconds to beat the Dutchman by 0.043 seconds in the final minute of a thrilling qualifying session that left both Ferraris on the second row of the grid.After four wins, Antonelli will be seeking to become the first Italian to win five consecutive races since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat for Ferrari in 1952 after extending Mercedes' run to six successive poles this year.Antonelli said he had produced "a magic lap"."It was so close with Max!" he said after securing his fourth pole of the season.Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was third ahead of Charles Leclerc, Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull and Mercedes' George Russell, who is 43 points behind Antonelli in the drivers' title race.McLaren's Oscar Piastri outpaced team-mate and world champion Lando Norris to qualifying seventh.Antonelli's pole was the first by a Mercedes driver since Hamilton in 2019 and he became the first Italian to take pole in Monaco since Jarno Trulli in 2004.The session began in warm sunshine with a long queue weaving out of the pits to warm their tyres in preparation for a flying lap, albeit in heavy traffic.An early radio call from Hamilton to complain Leclerc was "backing into me" reflected the tension in the cockpits before Hadjar vented to his frustrations.Leclerc topped the early runs ahead of Norris and Hamilton while Russell toiled for a clean lap before Gabriel Bortoleto clipped a barrier at the chicane and came to a halt, causing a six-minute red flag stoppage.This left most drivers chasing a lap in the final seconds of Q1 while the main contenders stayed in the pits.Leclerc led the way into Q2 ahead of Verstappen and Antonelli while a lap from Sainz, in the added time, saw him claim 10th and avoid an early exit. Alonso outburst  Out instead went the two Cadillacs, both Haas drivers and both Aston Martins, with two-time champion Fernando Alonso, 21st, making clear his distaste for the new 'hybrid era' cars."The worst generation of cars I have driven in Monaco,"he said."Hybrid cars should not be racing. Simple as that."After 21 previous appearances, including two wins and two poles, Alonso, at 44, is the most experienced Monaco driver on the grid.Verstappen led out for Q2, narrowly avoiding a pit-lane clash with Sainz before the precocious Antonelli set the pace in 1:12.778 ahead of Verstappen until Leclerc moved within 0.070 seconds of him.It was tight and changeable at the top as Red Bull burst into the frame, Verstappen going fastest in 1:12.499 to beat Antonelli by 0.205 with Hadjar third 0.223 adrift ahead of the Ferraris and McLarens.This time, both Williams and both Audis were eliminated along with Alpine's Franco Colapinto Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad.Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls and Alpine's Pierre Gasly made the top ten shootout.The final ten had another chance to compose a perfect pole lap.Leclerc bailed out of his first flying run, but hit the sweet spot on his second to clock 1:12.351 and snatch provisional pole.In a sensational sequence, the celebrating Monegasque crowd were silenced as Verstappen clocked 1:12.094 before, Antonelli blew that away as the tension erupted in Italian euphoria around the Monte Carlo harbour. 

Charles Leclerc has agreed a multi-year extension with his “second family” Ferrari days out from his home Monaco Grand Prix, the Formula One team announced on Wednesday. The 28-year-old has been with Ferrari since 2019, winning eight Grand Prix - his last victory was in 2024 - with his highest finish in the world championship being runner-up to Max Verstappen in 2022. “Scuderia Ferrari HP announces the renewal of its agreement with Charles Leclerc, who will continue to wear the team’s colours for the coming seasons of the Formula 1 World Championship,” read a Ferrari statement on their website. Leclerc, who sits in third position in this year's title race, just three points ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton, said that he was ecstatic to continue his dream drive with Ferrari. “It’s the team I've loved and dreamt of being part of since I was a child, and after all these years it has become a second family,” he said. “Together we’ve shared incredible moments and some tougher ones, but I believe in this team more than ever, and I’m deeply grateful that we will keep pushing side by side toward our shared goal of bringing the World Championship back to Maranello. “Being a Ferrari driver is a dream, but it's also a responsibility I never take for granted.” Ferrari lauded their “second-most capped Formula 1 driver and (who) also ranks second for pole positions, behind only Michael Schumacher.” “This renewal feels like something very natural for us,” said team principal Fred Vasseur. “Over these seasons we have seen him grow, to become not only one of the strongest drivers in Formula 1, but also a person who is completely at one with the team and everything Ferrari represents. “We appreciate his talent, we love his determination and the way he approaches every day with the people in the Scuderia, both on and off the track.”    

Marco Bezzecchi beat teammate Jorge Martin to win the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday as manufacturers ‌Aprilia ruined rivals Ducati's centenary celebrations on home turf in Mugello after Francesco ​Bagnaia briefly led the MotoGP race. Ducati's ‌Bagnaia, a three-time winner in Mugello from 2022 to 2024, led the ‌race until there were ⁠10 laps left when ‌Bezzecchi made his move before Spaniard Martin ‌also moved past the Italian to drop him down to third. There was no stopping Bezzecchi ⁠after he moved into the lead as the Italian rider fulfilled a childhood dream by taking the chequered flag over three seconds ahead of Martin for his first win at the famous circuit."It was a dream I wanted to achieve since I was a kid," Bezzecchi said after the Aprilia team threw him into the air during wild celebrations in the paddock. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Today we went there, we had ​fun. Thank you all guys, you are fantastic," he added in a message to the fans who streamed on to the circuit. Bezzecchi now leads Martin by 17 points in the championship after seven rounds. Meanwhile, Bagnaia's ‌late heroics denied Aprilia a podium ⁠lockout when Trackhouse ​rider Ai Ogura briefly took third on the final lap before the Italian ​took the place back just before the finish line. APRILIA'S BATTLE FOR LEAD WITH BAGNAIA As the red lights went out, it was the two factory Aprilia riders that battled for the lead while the two Ducatis slotted in behind them after sprint winner Raul Fernandez went very wide on turn one and fell from second to 17th. It was pole sitter Bezzecchi who led the pack of riders while Bagnaia moved up four places to slot in behind his Italian compatriot on home turf, with Martin and Marc Marquez chasing them down in third and fourth, respectively. Bezzecchi could not hold on to the ‌lead for long, however, as Bagnaia ‌used the Aprilia's slipstream to surge ⁠ahead on the start-finish straight. Marquez, making his return from double surgery on his foot and ⁠shoulder, was involved in a tense battle ⁠for fourth with KTM's Pedro Acosta as the two Spaniards constantly swapped positions. Up front, Bezzecchi stayed on Bagnaia's rear wheel and he finally made his move with 10 laps left, using the slipstream again to take the lead. That was all the Aprilia rider needed as he peeled away and built a commanding lead while Bagnaia turned his attention to Martin closing in behind him. The inevitable ​overtake came on lap 16 when Martin pounced to move up to second, with Bagnaia aware the Aprilia was faster as he was overtaken on the inside of turn one. "It was really tough because in the last laps I was struggling a lot with the rear grip," Bagnaia said. "I saw that the Aprilias were doing a fantastic job. I just tried to leave no space for Ai. But thanks to everyone, thanks to my team that did a fantastic job. We really deserve this kind of results." Ogura finished less than a tenth of a ‌second behind Bagnaia while ​VR46 Racing's Fabio Di Giannantonio rounded out the top five. Acosta finished sixth ahead of Marquez in seventh.

KTM's Pedro Acosta set the fastest time in Friday's practice for the Catalan Grand Prix, the sixth of 22 rounds in the MotoGP world championship.Under threatening skies, Acosta finished 0.018sec ahead of fellow Spaniard Alex Marquez of Ducati-Gresini and 0.070sec in front of his South African teammate Brad Binder.Raul Fernandez posted the fourth-fastest time at the very end of the session, just ahead of Johann Zarco and Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio.Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi took seventh place for Aprilia, ahead of Honda's Joan Mir and Australian Jack Miller.In the absence of reigning world champion Marc Marquez, who underwent surgery on his right foot and shoulder on Sunday, Jorge Martin, winner of both the sprint and the Grand Prix at Le Mans last weekend, failed to seize his chance.The 2024 world champion, who had fallen in the morning during free practice, went down again in the afternoon and could do no better than 17th fastest.With only the top 10 going directly into Q2, Martin will need to finish in the top two of Q1 to have a chance of a decent starting place on the grid.Two-time champion Francesco Bagnaia, Marquez's teammate at Ducati, also missed out on direct qualification as he could only manage the 13th quickest time. 

Jorge Martin surged to victory in the MotoGP sprint race at the French Grand Prix at Le Mans Saturday as Marc Marquez broke a foot in a spectacular crash.Martin started eighth on the grid but raced through the pack heading into the first corner and then pulled away to win."I love this track," said Martin, who won both the sprint and the main race at Le Mans on his way to the 2024 world title.Behind him, reigning world champion Marquez endured a nightmare day that ended in a violent crash on his factory Ducati. It left him with a broken right foot that will require surgery.Marquez started on the front row but had slipped to seventh before losing control with less than two laps of the 13-lap race to go.He put his left foot on the ground to try to regain his balance but was flipped over the handlebars in the opposite direction, sliding along the ground as his disintegrating Ducati cartwheeled just past him.Ducati issued a statement after the race saying that an X-ray showed "a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot" and that Marquez, who is a distant fifth in the standings, would miss Sunday's main race and at least one more."He will fly to Madrid this evening to undergo surgery in the coming days. He will not participate in the Catalan Grand Prix next week," said the Ducati statement.Martin started from eighth on the grid but jumped to first early on his Aprilia."I struggled a bit in qualifying but I knew my potential," he said."I put all my determination into the start. I found myself ahead at the second corner and I pushed like I'm used to alone, and boom! boom! boom!" he added, punching the air three times.In balmy, sunny conditions, Martin finished a comfortable 1.107 seconds ahead of Francesco Bagnaia on the second factory Ducati."I'm happy," said the Italian. "We are stilling missing something compared to Aprilia. I hope tomorrow we will have good weather because we can make a good result."The other Aprilia, ridden by Marco Bezzecchi, was third 2.786sec back.The Italian remained at the top of the riders' standings, with his lead cut to six points over team-mate Martin.Pedro Acosta, on a KTM, is third, 36 points off the pace."I'm very happy," said Bezzecchi. "I wasn't feeling very good. Happy to get this result. Always fighting."Spaniard Acosta was fourth with Frenchman Fabio Quartararo fifth for Yamaha.The weekend's racing continues with Sunday's main race when rain is forecast. 

Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli, the youngest championship leader in F1 history, will seek to complete a hat-trick of early season victories this weekend as Formula One returns after a month’s enforced absence due to the Middle East war. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver, triumphant in China and Japan, leads team-mate George Russell, who won the season-opening Australian race, by nine points ahead of what is effectively the start of another season, complete with revised rules and widespread car upgrades, at the Miami Grand Prix. “After a month without any racing, we are ready to get back on track,” said Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff. “We’ve used this break to analyse the opening races, address our weaknesses and rase our level. We’ve started the season well, but that counts for very little if you stand still. We know our competitors will have used this time to improve and build a deeper understanding of their cars so we expect the field to be closer in Miami. That’s the reality of F1 - it’s a challenge we must rise to.” Antonelli’s early triumphs made him the first Italian driver since Alberto Ascari in 1953 to win two consecutive races. Ascari completed his treble that season. Wolff also addressed the tweaks to the regulations to be introduced in Miami, aimed at making the cars and the spectacle more natural with reduced battery re-charging in qualifying and increased super-clipping power to reduce dangerous speed differentials. He said the revised rules would “respect the DNA of our sport” and deliver an improved spectacle without any significant reduction to Mercedes’ early-season performance advantage.For Mercedes, this Sunday’s race is an opportunity for a first win in Florida since the event was launched five years ago. It has been won twice by four-time champion Max Verstappen for Red Bull and twice by McLaren with a win apiece for world champion Lando Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri. They will harbour hopes of claiming points too with success in Saturday’s sprint race, won last year by Norris, but Ferrari are widely expected to be strong contenders too as they arrive in Miami, like McLaren, who are bringing an almost “completely new car”, with a heavily revised package. “It was one of our best tracks for pure pace, compared to others, last year,” said Norris. “It’s a different track and it may still suit us a little more than others.” After winning in 2022 and 2023, Verstappen will be aiming to stop Mercedes’ winning run and revive Red Bull’s challenge this year after a discouraging start. He is ninth, on 12 points, 60 adrift of Antonelli, with team-mate Isack Hadjar 12th on four. Ferrari’s duo of Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton are third and fourth respectively on 49 and 41 points with many paddock observers suggesting they are poised to fight for a first win since Carlos Sainz’s success in Mexico in October 2024. Leclerc’s eighth and last win came at Austin, Texas, shortly before Sainz’s triumph while Hamilton is chasing his 106th win and first since the 2024 Belgian race before he joined Ferrari. After a desultory first year, the Briton said he is relishing the challenge of a new formula that has seen him rediscover his racing mojo. “We’re all re-charged after the break,” said Russell, expressing the feelings of most drivers. “I’m hoping we can continue where we left off.” It will mark newcomers Cadillac’s first racing appearance on home soil in the United States when Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas venture out at the Hard Rock Stadium in a new American livery. 

Alex Marquez turned his 250th Grand Prix start into a late birthday gift by winning the Spanish Grand Prix ‌for the second straight year Sunday while watching his brother and pole ​sitter Marc crash out in ‌dramatic fashion. The Gresini Racing rider, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Thursday, started ‌fifth on the grid but quickly moved ‌up to overtake his elder sibling before ‌stretching clear for victory. Marc’s quest for a milestone 100th Grand Prix win across all classes came to an abrupt end on lap two when he lost control at turn 11, crashing out while chasing down his younger brother and stunning the home crowd. “Not many words to describe this moment, we struggled a lot at the beginning of the year,” Alex said. “Today, for me, it was clear - go from the first lap, pushing, trying to take the lead. From that moment, I knew that the rhythm was really good until the ​end.” Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi finished second for Aprilia after failing to reel in the flying Alex over 25 laps, while VR46 Racing’s Fabio di Giannantonio completed the podium to move up to third in the ‌championship standings. Marc’s crash now leaves the reigning champion 44 ​points behind Bezzecchi in the championship hunt, as a first Jerez victory since ​2019 remains elusive. ALEX UNBEATABLE IN DRY CONDITIONSMarc had clinched his first pole of the season before winning a chaotic sprint despite a crash in rainy conditions on Saturday, but bright sunshine welcomed the riders at the Circuito de Jerez Sunday. Alex, who had been unbeatable in dry conditions at Jerez with a 2025 setup on his Ducati, made a perfect getaway from fifth on the grid. After Marc got the jump from pole and Bezzecchi slotted in behind from the second row, Alex quickly pushed the Italian down to third before taking the lead from his brother with a dive on the inside. As ‌the elder Marquez brother chased him, ‌his race unravelled spectacularly on lap two when he lost the front end and crashed at turn 11, much to the dismay of the Spanish crowd. That moved Bezzecchi up to second but the Italian had his work cut out trying to close the gap as Alex continued to stretch his advantage to more than a second. Behind the leading duo, Di Giannantonio split the two Aprilias by pushing Jorge Martin down to fourth. BOTH DUCATIS FAIL TO FINISHDucati had celebrated a one-two in Saturday’s sprint but Sunday’s race came to a premature end for the ​Italian outfit when Francesco Bagnaia retired with a technical problem. The factory Ducati team have now gone nine races without a Grand Prix podium - their longest drought since 2014. But up front, it was all about Alex as he urged the crowd to increase their volume on the final lap - just as he did last year - before crossing the finish line and heading straight to the fans to soak up their adulation.“We struggled a bit all weekend, so it wasn’t easy and we made a good performance. I’m very happy,” said Bezzecchi. 

Formula One leaders Mercedes go into Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix chasing a season-opening hat-trick of one-two ‌wins, with Kimi Antonelli fired up after a maiden victory and George Russell seeking ​to cement his status as title ‌favourite.The pair have won one Sunday race each but Russell, winner of the season-opener ‌in Australia and the ⁠Saturday sprint in China, ‌leads his Chinese Grand Prix-winning teammate by ‌four points.Mercedes last kicked off with a hat-trick of wins in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic-hit season in ⁠which Austria's Red Bull Ring hosted the first two races.The last time they started with three one-two finishes was in 2019.Having made a similarly dominant start to the sport's new era this season, including locking out the front row in every qualifying session, they could tick off both milestones on Sunday."We have made a positive start to the season but it is only that," said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. "We know that the moment you think you've got this sport figured out, ​you are usually proven wrong."FERRARI CHASING FIRST WIN AT SUZUKA SINCE 2004Despite Wolff's caution, either Russell or Antonelli should be celebrating a first win at Suzuka, a 5.8-km figure-of-eight layout widely hailed as a drivers' track that hosts ‌the 40th running of the Japanese ⁠round.Ferrari, who last won ​at Suzuka in 2004 and have been second-best to Mercedes in the opening two ​races, will hope to rise to the challenge.Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, thanks to their fast starts and intra-team duels, have served up plenty of wheel-to-wheel entertainment.Seven-time world champion Hamilton, in particular, has shown plenty of fight and ended his podium drought in China with a third-place finish. A four-time Suzuka winner, the Briton will be hoping that run continues.Circuit owners Honda will be hoping for a happier homecoming as power unit suppliers to Aston Martin after a dismal start to their year.Neither Fernando Alonso nor Lance Stroll have finished the opening two races, with vibrations from the Japanese manufacturer's power unit severely limiting running.Just getting to the chequered flag would be big ‌progress for the Japanese manufacturer that ‌powered Max Verstappen to four successive wins ⁠on the circuit from 2022 to 2025 when they were partners to Red Bull.The four-time world champion, ⁠who now has a Ford-badged Red Bull ⁠power unit in his car, will also be looking to bounce back after retiring in China."Heading into Suzuka, this is one of my favourite tracks to race at with lots of high-speed corners," said Verstappen. "There is a lot of history at this circuit for the team and it is one I always look forward to coming back to."McLaren will be hoping for a strong showing after reigning champion Lando Norris and ​Oscar Piastri were unable to start in China.Australian Piastri will be especially keen to get a full race distance under his belt, having only completed the China sprint so far after also crashing out on a reconnaissance lap ahead of his home race in Melbourne.Haas could provide some cheer for the Japanese fans.The U.S.-owned team have Toyota's motorsports division as their title sponsors and are led by Japanese team principal Ayao Komatsu.The team, running a special Godzilla-themed livery from this weekend, are an impressive fourth in the constructors' standings with the team's British racer Oliver Bearman fifth in the drivers' battle.The Japanese Grand ‌Prix will be the last ​race until the Miami Grand Prix on May 3 with April's Bahrain and Saudi Arabian rounds cancelled due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. 

Kimi Antonelli said Monday that he is eyeing further Formula One success after the teenage Italian announced himself on the world stage with victory in the Chinese Grand Prix.The 19-year-old won his maiden GP from pole position on Sunday and was greeted by media and enthusiastic fans as he touched down in his native Bologna."I'm so happy for the win and to have brought the Italian flag back onto the highest step of the podium," Antonelli told reporters."It's a starting point and I hope I can keep going because we're on the right track. It won't be easy."Antonelli, who took over Lewis Hamilton's old seat at Mercedes at the start of the 2025 season, is the first Italian to win an F1 GP since Giancarlo Fisichella 20 years ago.He finished in front of Mercedes teammate George Russell and Ferrari's Hamilton after becoming the youngest pole sitter in F1 history.And Antonelli even hinted that he was aiming to be become the first Italian to win the drivers' championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953."I've removed a bit of weight from my shoulders, I'm more relaxed. It's the kind of result which gives you strength and more awareness of what you can do," he said."There's another, bigger step, which is the most difficult. I'm sure that if I do everything well we can get there."Antonelli's win was huge news in Italy and led to tennis superstar Jannik Sinner dedicating his Indian Wells triumph to F1's rising star."I was really surprised by Sinner's homage, I sent him a message because I really appreciated it, it was really nice of him," he said.Antonelli sits four points behind Russell in the world championship standings with the Japanese GP coming up on March 29.
