Rudi Garcia has left his role as Belgium coach after his side were knocked out of the World Cup quarter-finals, the Royal Belgian Football Federation (RBFA) said on Monday.Garcia, 62, took over the Red Devils in January 2025 before guiding them to a last-eight loss to eventual tournament winners Spain.The Frenchman replaced Domenico Tedesco and also helped Belgium secure their place in Nations League A with an ageing generation of big names players such as midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, forward Romelu Lukaku and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois."We sincerely thank Rudi Garcia and his staff for their dedication, professionalism and commitment over the past 18 months," the RBFA said."And wish them every success in the future," it added.Garcia's spell in charge was his first job in international football having had notable stints with Lille, Roma and Marseille.In 2023, he lasted just five months at Napoli before being sacked after only 16 games.At the World Cup, he was unable to take Belgium further than the last eight. Their third-place finish in 2018 remains their best performance at the competition.'Revival'Tedesco had only managed to take the squad to the last 16 of Euro 2024. His predecessor Roberto Martinez lost his job after a group stage exit at the World Cup four years ago."Rudi Garcia has undoubtedly contributed to the revival of the Red Devils," RBFA sporting director Vincent Mannaert said,"He was appointed national coach in a difficult sporting and financial context."Thanks in particular to his commitment and experience, team cohesion was restored and an excellent result was achieved at the last World Cup, Lannaert added.Belgium finished top of their group and hammered co-hosts the US 4-1 in the last 16 in a game overshadowed by President Donald Trump asking FIFA to suspend Folarin Balogun's red card ban."I leave Belgium in League A of the Nations League and among the 8 best teams in the world," Garcia said on Instagram."Only Spain, the new world champions, against whom we were the only team to score a goal in eight matches, prevented us from going even further in the most prestigious of competitions," the former Lille midfielder added.Garcia kept faith with the likes of de Bruyne, Lukaku and Courtois, all 33 or older for the competition, from their fabled "Golden Generation" which also included Eden Hazard and Vincent Kompany.He also placed faith in a younger generation of players such as attackers Jeremy Doku and Charles De Ketelaere and defender Nathan Ngoy."I'm ready once again, to pursue new ambitions with a national team or at club level," Garcia said."I wish Belgium all the best as they continue the generational change that I took pleasure in helping to start," he added. 

Germany's continued World Cup failures are a result of structural, political and cultural problems in German society, Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro said on Wednesday.Four-time winners Germany were eliminated by minnows Paraguay in the last 32 of the World Cup in June, having crashed out at the group stage of the 2018 and 2022 editions.Having taken over Leverkusen in 2018, Carro helped guide the club to a first Bundesliga title in 2024 alongside lifting the German Cup in the same season."Germany still have outstanding individual players, but we surely need to look closely at where we are now - it seems like there are fewer players coming through to the top level," 61-year-old Carro told AFP."There needs to be greater investment in youth development, including a better integration of school and sports."A state of the art, modern infrastructure is a key figure as well... projects that improve these conditions are too often slowed down by bureaucracy and lengthy decision-making."The issue goes beyond facilities and structures. There is also a cultural dimension," the Spaniard added.Carro said Leverkusen have been waiting almost a decade for approval on a new training centre despite scaling the project down from its initial target."We are still struggling with approvals despite identifying a suitable site," he said."That just illustrates one example of a much broader challenge here in Germany," he added.Originally from Barcelona, Carro said World Cup finalists Spain and semi-finalists France and England succeeded due to "enormous ambition, resilience and collective strength.""There are always things you can learn from other countries and systems. With Spain, England and France, you have three of the four World Cup semi-finalists literally next door."These are similarly developed football nations that have invested consistently in modern infrastructure and academies as well as in coaches and player development," he added.Germany are set to appoint Jurgen Klopp as coach after Julian Nagelsmann's resignation but Carro said the former Liverpool boss could not solve German football's woes on his own."Jurgen Klopp has achieved a great deal in his career and deserves respect for that," he said."But, one coach alone cannot solve long term and structural challenges."The conditions around him are at least as important: a strong and modern youth development concept, state of the art infrastructure, clear performance principles and a willingness to change." 

Slaven Bilic will return as head coach of Croatia, the national football federation announced Monday, replacing Zlatko Dalic, who resigned after the country's World Cup exit.Dalic stepped down last week after a tenure that included a runner-up finish at the 2018 World Cup. Croatia failed to move into the last 16 of this year's World Cup, losing 2-1 to Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.Former Croatian international defender Bilic previously coached Croatia between 2006 and 2012.The 57-year-old, who also coached English clubs West Ham, West Bromwich Albion and Watford, was "unanimously appointed" as head coach, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) said."It is not easy to succeed Zlatko, but we are convinced that Slaven is the right person for this role," HNS president Marijan Kustic said, praising Bilic's "extensive coaching and managerial experience".Bilic recorded a higher winning percentage than Dalic during his last tenure, with 42 wins, 15 draws and eight defeats in 65 matches.But his side's best result was reaching the quarter-finals of the 2008 European Championships, which they lost on penalties to Turkey."I am extremely excited about this challenge, which I feel completely ready for as a more mature and experienced coach than I was in 2006, but with the same motivation and desire for Croatia to be strong, bold and successful," Bilic told a press conference.- Modric in spotlight -The Split-born Bilic said he took the post to "achieve a great result, above all at the European Championship" in 2028.Asked about whether veteran captain Luka Modric would retire from international football, Bilic said the decision was up to the former Ballon d'Or winner, who will turn 41 in September."He is much more to Croatia than just the best player. Modric has been asked whether he is retiring since 2018 ... I would like him to continue playing for the national team."With 44 caps for Croatia, Bilic's club career was mostly spent at Hajduk Split with stints in England at West Ham and Everton in the mid-1990s.Bilic's last coaching position was at Saudi Arabia's Al-Fateh, during the 2023-2024 season.Modric's Croatia lost the 2018 World Cup final to France in Russia.Dalic also guided the nation to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the last-16 at Euro 2020. 

Manchester City have signed teenage winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester on a five-year deal, the Premier League giants announced Saturday.Monga made his English top-flight debut for the Foxes aged just 15 and has joined City despite interest from other leading clubs.The 17-year-old played 37 times for Leicester and was also the youngest player to start a game for the club.No fee has been disclosed but Monga's move is reported to be worth £10mn ($13mn) with add-ons on a contract which will take him through to 2031.Monga becomes the third English player to join Manchester City during the current transfer window, as new manager Enzo Maresca looks to refreshthe squad, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Pierce Charles and club-record signing Elliot Anderson.Monga featured for the first time in the top flight as a second-half substitute in Leicester's 3-0 defeat by Newcastle in April 2025 under Ruud van Nistelrooy and made his first start in the League Cup against Huddersfield in August 2025.The England under-19 international is also the third-youngest player to feature in the Premier League behind Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman."When I became aware that Manchester City were interested, I knew instantly this was the right choice for me," Monga told his new club's website."For any young footballer, to become part of this amazing club is a dream come true. This has been the best club in England over the past 10 years."And it has also handed opportunities to players from the academy like Phil Foden and Nico O'Reilly which shows that the pathway is there."It is a privilege to be here and I'm delighted to have joined." 

England captain Harry Kane labelled Erling Haaland "a machine" but said he and Norway's "beast" of a number nine are completely different players as they prepare to face off in Saturday's World Cup quarter-final.Haaland has struck seven times in his first four matches ever at a major tournament, including a devastating double to eliminate Brazil, and his goals have carried Norway into the last eight for the first time.Kane is only one goal behind the Manchester City striker for the tournament and has taken his overall World Cup record to 14 goals."I think we're completely different players. I know we're both strikers, but we're in almost two different positions," Kane told his pre-match press conference."Erling is incredible, his goalscoring record, physically he's a machine, he's a beast. His finishing is at the highest level and his goalscoring record speaks for itself."I see myself as a different player, although I score the same goals. I like to maybe touch the ball a little bit more, be involved with the play a little bit more, but also can play as maybe the out-and-out number nine."I don't think it's one to compare ourselves. I respect him a lot as a player and as a professional. Obviously, I'm hoping he has a quiet day tomorrow, but I think his overall performance is very good. He's a fantastic player." Despite their phenomenal goalscoring record, Haaland and Kane trail Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who have both netted eight times in the 2026 tournament, in the battle for the Golden Boot. Kane won the prize for the World Cup's top goalscorer in 2018 but England fell short of glory as they exited in the semi-finals to Croatia.Ending a 60-year wait for England to win a major tournament remains Kane's primary aim, but he is hoping to score the goals to carry the Three Lions to glory."I think it's been an amazing World Cup on that front in terms of all the top strikers, all the top goalscorers scoring goals and affecting games. It's not always the case at these major tournaments," added the Bayern Munich striker."It's a great competition. It puts me in a mindset to be at my very best level as much as possible."My main goal is to win the World Cup more than another golden boot, but I also know I'm a goalscorer, I'm the number nine, so if I'm scoring goals, it's obviously going to help the team."Kane has been the spearhead for a generation of England players that have come closer than ever before to ending the long wait since the 1966 World Cup to win a major tournament.Under Gareth Southgate they lost in both the last two finals of the European Championship and exited at the quarter-final and semi-final stage of the past two World Cups.Kane issued a rallying cry for a huge final effort to get over the line in what could be three games in eight days to make history."Ultimately, until we win that trophy, there's always going to be that talk around England and the team but we're in a good position. We're in a place that we wanted to be six weeks ago when we met up for prep camp," he added. "We took a lot of good steps in the right direction. We've overcome a lot of difficult moments and difficult games."Now we're in the final eight days of the final push. We're going to need everyone to be at the highest level to achieve our dreams."

The German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Saturday that it was close to an agreement with Jurgen Klopp for him to become the new Germany coach.However, before the 59-year-old makes his return to the touchline, the DFB said it still needed to secure the approval of his current employer, the Red Bull Group."DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held an initial in-depth discussion with Jurgen Klopp in New York on Friday regarding his potential appointment as national team coach," the DFB stated in a press release."During this constructive discussion, an understanding was reached on the key points of a potential contract."Discussions will continue next week. Both parties are confident that the negotiations - subject to an agreement with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull - can ultimately be brought to a successful conclusion," the statement continued.Klopp has been the DFB's preferred candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany's round-of-32 World Cup exit after losing on penalties to Paraguay.The German is widely considered one of the finest coaches in the game after glittering spells at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.Klopp stepped away from management after leaving Liverpool in 2024 and has since been engaged as the head of global football for energy drink brand Red Bull, over-seeing a multi-club network which includes clubs in Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States and Japan.Last weekend, Klopp said he was "more than recharged" following his break from the frontlines of football.Since winning the World Cup 12 years ago in Brazil, Germany suffered two consecutive group-stage exits, before their latest disappointment in North America this summer. 

South African midfielder Jayden Adams, who represented his country at the ongoing World Cup, died on Saturday at the age of 25 , Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said."It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams," McKenzie said in a statement.The minister did not disclose a cause of death."South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents," he said.The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also paid tribute, saying on X: "Football has lost one of its own."Police said they had opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning."Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation," Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk told AFP.Adams played in all three of South Africa's group-stage matches at the World Cup, as Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32 for the first time, but did not feature in the knockout defeat by Canada.He was also part of the South Africa squad that finished third at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.Born in Cape Town, Adams came through the Stellenbosch FC academy and became the club's first youth graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020.He went on to make 139 appearances for the Cape Winelands side and helped them win the Carling Knockout in 2023 before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.At Sundowns, the midfielder added a Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his list of honours.His death comes less than a month after the passing of his grandmother, on the eve of South Africa's Group A match against Czechia at Atlanta Stadium."Jayden started in the match against Czechia and gave his all while carrying the burden of losing his grandmother," the South African Football Association said at the time. 

Jassim Rashid al-Buenain has announced his resignation yesterday as president of the Qatar Football Association (QFA) following the conclusion of Qatar’s campaign in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.In a statement published on his official X account, al-Buenain said his decision comes after three years at the helm of the federation, a period he described as marked by significant challenges and continuous efforts to advance Qatari football.He said the federation worked tirelessly to transform its ambitions into tangible achievements, emphasising that commitment, dedication and teamwork were key to accomplishing the objectives set during his tenure. Al-Buenain also expressed his appreciation to everyone who supported the federation throughout his presidency, wishing continued success for Qatari football in the years ahead.Al-Buenain said the achievements made during his tenure stand as a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. He thanked the federation’s members and staff for their commitment, stressing that the successes achieved were the result of collective effort and prioritizing the interests of Qatari football.He said he leaves his position with pride in what was accomplished over the past three years, while expressing confidence that Qatari football will continue to progress.  Al-Buenain also wished the QFA and Al Annabi continued success in the years ahead. His resignation follows Al Annabi’s exit from the FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, after finishing bottom of Group B. Qatar made history by earning its first-ever World Cup point with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland, before suffering defeats to Canada 6-0 and Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1, ending their campaign in the group stage.

Al Sadd announced on Sunday the appointment of Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu as head coach of the club's first football team on a two-year contract through 2028. In a statement on its official website, the club said Lucescu's appointment is part of its strategy to build on recent success and strengthen the team's position at both the domestic and continental levels, in line with the ambitions of the club and its supporters. The club said Lucescu's coaching staff will include three assistant coaches, fitness coaches, a goalkeeping coach and a performance analyst.Lucescu succeeds Italian coach Roberto Mancini, who left the club in June after leading Al Sadd to the Qatari league title last season. The Romanian previously managed El Jaish during the 2012-13 season, guiding the Qatari club to the Round of 16 in its first appearance in the AFC Champions League. He later coached Romanian side Petrolul Ploiesti and Greek clubs Xanthi and PAOK before taking charge of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal from 2019 to 2021.

Ange Postecoglou has been appointed the new head coach of Al-Nassr on a two-year deal, ‌the Saudi Pro League champions said ​on Friday,as the ‌Australian attempts to revive his ‌career after ⁠two ‌bruising stints in the ‌Premier League."A new chapter. Mr Ange Postecoglou ⁠appointed as head coach of the Al-Nassr first team. The contract spans two seasons," the club said in a statement."We wish him and his staff every success in their journey."Postecoglou previously managed Tottenham ​Hotspur, whom he guided to Europa League glory in 2025, but he was sacked two weeks ‌later after they ⁠finished 17th ​in the Premier League standings.A miserable ​reign at Nottingham Forest in the 2025-26 season came to a swift and brutal end 39 days after his appointment when he went winless in his opening eight games in charge, which included six defeats.The 60-year-old had been linked with the Scotland job after Steve ‌Clarke stepped down ‌following their World ⁠cup exit, as well as Kazakhstan but ⁠media reports ⁠said his wage demands were too high for the central Asian side.He takes over an Al-Nassr side led by Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who guided the club to the ​Saudi Pro League title on the final day of the season in May.A manager known for winning trophies in his second season, Postecoglou guided Celtic to two Scottish Premiership titles while he has also won league titles with Brisbane Roar and Yokohama ‌F Marinos.
