Vehicles parked at or near metro, bus stops continue to pose challenge for commuters

Vehicles parked at or near Doha Metro and bus stops continue to be a concern in several parts of the capital, with commuters saying the practice obstructs public transport access and inconveniences passengers among others. Several vehicles are often seen occupying spaces of designated Metro feeder and bus stops, leaving limited room for buses to pull in and for passengers to board or alight comfortably. Similar scenes have been observed at other stops across Doha. The issue appears to be most common in busy residential and commercial areas, where some motorists park temporarily while waiting for passengers or leave their vehicles near public transport facilities. “When the designated spaces for public buses and Metro feeder vehicles are occupied by parked cars, drivers are forced to stop in the middle of the road. This not only contributes to traffic congestion but also poses safety risks to pedestrians and commuters,” said a Doha resident from East Al Hilal. He noted that some vehicles are also parked improperly, leaving too little space for buses to stop at the designated bus bay. The practice is prohibited under Article 78 of Qatar’s Traffic Law, which states that vehicles may not park or wait within 15m of bus stops, pedestrian crossings, junctions and roundabouts. The law also prohibits parking in places where vehicles may obstruct traffic or block the view of other road users. A number of commuters say improperly parked vehicles can force buses to stop farther from the curb, making boarding more difficult for elderly passengers, people with disabilities, parents with young children, and those carrying luggage. In some cases, pedestrians may also have to walk around parked vehicles or step onto the roadway to access buses. The recurring issue comes as Qatar continues to promote the Doha Metro and its integrated feeder bus network as part of broader efforts to reduce traffic congestion, improve first- and last-mile connectivity, and encourage more sustainable modes of transport. It is learnt that keeping bus stops clear is essential to maintaining reliable public transport operations. Vehicles occupying designated stopping areas can delay bus services, reduce passenger safety, and disrupt traffic flow, particularly during busy periods. The Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Traffic has repeatedly reminded motorists to comply with parking regulations, stressing in previous awareness campaigns that there is “no excuse” for parking in undesignated areas and warning that improper parking inconveniences other road users and compromises road safety. Residents have called for stricter enforcement around metro and bus stops, including more frequent patrols, clearer road markings, and greater public awareness to ensure designated public transport areas remain free of obstructions.

Fresh catch boosts sales at Old Doha Port fish market

The resumption of the local fishing season has significantly revitalised business at Jabrat Al Mina Fish Market in the Old Doha Port, with abundant supplies of freshly caught local seafood driving stronger consumer demand for premium domestic fish. The renewed influx of local catches has helped restore market balance, broaden consumer choice, and keep retail prices relatively stable, while supporting the continued growth of Qatar’s domestic fisheries sector. The market is currently witnessing brisk daily activity as fishing boats unload fresh catches directly at the port before they are offered for sale. Popular local species, including hamour, kingfish, sheri, safi, Sultan Ibrahim (red mullet), faskar, as well as shrimp and oysters, are attracting strong demand from both Qatari nationals and expatriate residents. Several high-demand varieties reportedly sell out before the end of the trading day, reflecting consumers’ strong preference for freshly landed local seafood. Vendors attributed the strong sales to the reopening of the fishing season, which has substantially increased domestic supply and helped stabilise prices amid the usual seasonal fluctuations. The greater availability of locally caught fish has expanded purchasing options and further strengthened Jabrat Al Mina’s reputation as Qatar’s premier destination for fresh seafood.**media[476274]**Traders also noted that the market continues to offer a wide selection of imported seafood to cater to diverse consumer preferences, including tilapia starting at QR10 per kilogram. They added that prices may vary daily depending on normal fluctuations in supply and demand. According to the latest data, Qatar’s fishing fleet comprises thousands of licensed vessels operating along a coastline stretching approximately 563km. Continued investments in sustainable fisheries management and modern fishing infrastructure are also supporting domestic seafood production. The Ministry of Municipality has further intensified efforts to regulate fishing seasons, protect fish stocks, and promote sustainable harvesting practices to preserve marine biodiversity and ensure the sector’s long-term productivity. Meanwhile, Jabrat Al Mina has enhanced the overall shopping experience through a range of modern retail services. Fish cleaning, filleting and preparation services, high hygiene standards, electronic payment facilities, and well-organised trading areas have significantly improved convenience for customers.**media[476273]**These value-added services have also reduced waiting times and increased customer satisfaction, transforming what was once a traditional fish market into a modern retail destination. Consumers at the market praised the combination of high-quality products, competitive prices, and efficient service, emphasising that locally caught seafood remains their preferred choice for its freshness and superior taste. “Besides its excellent location and modern facilities, the market offers a truly rewarding shopping experience. It features a wide variety of local fish brought in fresh from the sea every day, many of which are difficult to find elsewhere,” said Ahmed, a shopper, who also commended the market’s contemporary design and world-class facilities. Located within the redeveloped Old Doha Port waterfront, Al Mina district has evolved into more than just a commercial marketplace. It has become a popular destination that blends Qatar’s rich maritime heritage with modern amenities, attracting residents, visitors, and tourists alike. Its growing popularity is also contributing to the broader revitalisation of Old Doha Port as a cultural, leisure, and commercial hub. With fishing activity expected to remain strong in the coming months, traders anticipate continued price stability and a steady supply of key seafood varieties. They believe this will attract even more customers to the market and further boost business activity.

Culinary diplomacy at the heart of Qatar-Thai expanding ties

The Thai embassy in Doha is expanding its use of culinary diplomacy to strengthen cultural ties between Thailand and Qatar while supporting the growth and visibility of Thai-owned businesses across the country. As part of these efforts, the embassy recently hosted an exclusive media preview of “Thailand on a Plate: A Culinary Journey” at Benjarong Restaurant, Dusit Doha Hotel. The interactive cooking experience invited participants to discover authentic Thai cuisine through hands-on learning, highlighting the traditions, ingredients and customs that shape Thailand’s rich culinary heritage. In a press statement, Kit Devahastin, chargé d’affaires at the Thai embassy, said: “Thai cuisine is more than a culinary experience; it reflects Thailand’s culture, creativity, and hospitality. Through initiatives such as Thailand on a Plate, we hope to bring the people of Thailand and Qatar closer together by creating opportunities for cultural exchange and shared experiences. “Thai restaurants in Qatar have become important ambassadors of Thai culture, introducing Thai flavours and traditions to the Qatari community and residents from around the world.” Led by professional Thai chefs, participants learned to prepare authentic Thai dishes while discovering the stories behind Thai cuisine – from traditional techniques and unique ingredients to the balance of flavours, wellness, and hospitality that define Thai culinary culture. Speaking to ‘Gulf Times’, Yanisa Thanomrod, First Secretary at the embassy, said the initiative was designed to provide participants with a deeper appreciation of Thai culture by encouraging them to experience it first-hand. “Thailand on a Plate is an event that promotes a deeper understanding of Thai culture because it invites people to engage actively with Thai food,” Thanomrod said. She explained that the programme goes beyond teaching recipes by introducing participants to traditional Thai ingredients, cooking techniques, and family values passed down through generations. “We aim for the participants to learn how to cook Thai food and through this we’ll teach them about Thai ingredients, as well as the Thai way of life through the cooking methods and the way in which we have food. We usually eat it together as a family and through engaging actively in the cooking, I think the participants will really learn about Thai culture through that,” she said. Thanomrod noted that food provides one of the most accessible ways of building relationships between communities, making culinary experiences an effective form of cultural diplomacy. “Food is actually the simplest way to connect people because in all of our cultures we have our own way of dining together,” she said. “Within a meal people can share their stories and connect. We believe that through food, through dining together and through actively learning how to cook different types of cuisine will really enhance the experience and provide an easy way to connect people.” Alongside promoting cultural awareness, the embassy has also been working closely with Thai restaurants and chefs in Qatar to strengthen the local Thai culinary sector. According to Thanomrod, more than 20 Thai restaurants now operate in Qatar, with the embassy collaborating with many of them through initiatives that showcase authentic Thai cuisine and encourage residents to explore local establishments. She pointed to initiatives including Thai Souq Fest 2024, At the Table earlier this year and Thai Restaurant Week 2025, which have all sought to increase the visibility of Thai food while providing greater exposure for participating restaurants. “Through these initiatives, the aim is to increase the visibility of Thai food and Thai restaurants in Qatar, and they have been working very closely with us and have been supporting us a lot,” Thanomrod said. Building on that momentum, the embassy is preparing for another edition of Thai Restaurant Week this September, continuing its efforts to celebrate Thailand’s culinary heritage, support Thai businesses operating in Qatar and further strengthen the enduring friendship between the two countries.

Doha continues to reinforce its position as a leading global destination for sports training camps, supported by world-class facilities and comprehensive infrastructure that meet the highest international standards. These strengths have made Qatar a preferred choice for teams and clubs from around the world.The Qatar Gymnastics Federation (QGF) is hosting a training camp for the artistic gymnastics team of Al Ittihad Saudi Club at the QGF training hall. The camp forms part of the team's preparation program for upcoming competitions and championships.The camp features an intensive training program that includes joint sessions with members of Qatari teams. The competitive and focused training environment supports the exchange of technical expertise, helps raise athletes' skill levels, and reflects the depth of sporting cooperation between the two sides. QGF President and First Vice President of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Ali al-Hitmi said hosting training camps aligns with the Federation's vision to strengthen Qatar's position as a regional and global sports hub. He noted that the QGF remains committed to expanding cooperation with Arab and international federations and clubs, raising the technical level of gymnastics, and promoting the exchange of expertise among athletes and technical staff. Al Hitmi added that Qatar's world-class sports facilities, organizational expertise, and advanced logistical capabilities make it an ideal destination for training camps and sporting events. He said these strengths support the country's broader vision of establishing itself as a global sports capital. For his part, Director of the Artistic Gymnastics Team at Al-Ittihad Saudi Club Mohammed Al Sumairi expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and excellent organization the team received upon arriving in Doha. He praised Qatar's advanced sports facilities and the world-class standards of the QGF training hall, noting that its modern equipment and comprehensive facilities helped provide an ideal environment for the success of the camp and the achievement of its technical objectives. Al Sumairi also thanked the QGF, led by al-Hitmi, for its warm reception and strong cooperation. He emphasized that the camp offers an important opportunity to prepare the athletes for upcoming competitions while strengthening sporting ties between the Qatari and Saudi federations. The camp reflects continued confidence in Qatar as a host for international sports training camps, supported by its advanced infrastructure and strong organizational expertise. It further reinforces the country's position as a premier destination for teams and clubs seeking an ideal environment for preparation and development.

Shading the walk from station to door in peak summer

For commuters stepping out of an air-conditioned Metro station into Qatar’s summer heat, the most difficult part of the journey can sometimes be the shortest: the final few hundred metres on foot. As Doha expands its public transport, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, Qatar’s intense summer climate is placing greater focus on how routes connecting Metro stations, bus stops and other transport hubs to people’s destinations can be made more comfortable and accessible. The issue is already recognised in Qatar’s official planning framework. The Doha Municipality Vision and Development Strategy, developed under the Qatar National Master Plan, calls for a “network of shaded routes” connecting key facilities and transit stops to enhance thermal comfort for pedestrians and cyclists. The policy highlights an increasingly important consideration for cities in hot climates: shade is not simply an amenity or architectural feature, but an important part of making streets and public spaces more usable during periods of intense heat. For Qatar residents, the difference between shaded and exposed routes becomes particularly noticeable during summer, when daily routines often shift indoors or towards the cooler hours of early morning and evening. “Shaded areas help a lot during summer. But sometimes we have to wait several minutes for buses, so I hope more will be built for commuters,” Doha resident Ramil R told Gulf Times, adding that tall buildings and the canopy of trees also provide useful protection from direct sunlight. A frequent Metro commuter, he finds public transport practical, particularly as stations provide welcome relief from the heat. Online discussions and expatriate guides also frequently advise residents to use the Doha Metro and covered walkways during summer to minimise prolonged exposure to the sun. Discussions about daily commuting similarly highlight the extent to which everyday movement in Qatar relies on transitions between air-conditioned cars, Metro stations, buses and buildings. “Getting around Doha by public transport at this time of year can be challenging for many, but I think it is always better to plan ahead before leaving the house,” said Aristotle, another Doha resident who enjoys going out with his classmates during summer. A passenger, for example, may travel comfortably across Doha on the Metro only to face an exposed walk between the station exit and an office, home, shop or other destination. This final stretch presents a challenge for public transport in a hot-climate city. “We visit and hop from one mall to another via the Doha Metro, and it’s fun, and we don’t have to wait for the cold months to do this,” Aristotle said. “There are several ways to avoid direct sunlight, and I think being exposed for a few minutes is manageable.” Qatar’s planning framework has long recognised the importance of connecting public transport with pedestrian-friendly routes. A similar policy to Doha’s appears in the Al Rayyan and Al Shahhaniya Municipality Vision and Development Strategy, which also calls for shaded routes linking key facilities and transit stops. Several developments across Qatar demonstrate different approaches to addressing outdoor thermal comfort. At Msheireb Downtown Doha, climate-responsive design is integrated into the masterplan. According to Msheireb Properties, buildings and streets were designed to increase shading, reduce direct solar exposure and incorporate principles drawn from traditional Qatari architecture. Rather than treating individual buildings in isolation, the district uses the relationship between buildings, streets and public spaces to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment while providing greater protection from the sun. At Ras Bufontas Free Zone, Qatar Free Zones Authority has also incorporated climate-responsive features into pedestrian planning. The authority says pedestrian and cycling networks connect key facilities, while ample shading and specific street orientations help improve airflow and outdoor thermal comfort. Other locations have gone further by introducing mechanical cooling. At Al Gharrafa Park, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) installed an integrated cooling and air-conditioning system serving pedestrian and jogging tracks. According to Ashghal, the system is designed to maintain temperatures along the tracks at around 26C to 28C, with trees and climbing plants helping to retain cooler air. Similar temperature-controlled outdoor facilities have provided residents with more opportunities to remain physically active during the hottest months. A 2025 Xinhua report on Qatar’s adaptation to extreme summer heat highlighted the use of cooled and shaded outdoor walking facilities at Umm Al Seneem Park, where residents were able to exercise outdoors despite high temperatures. Other destinations across Qatar also offer cooled, air-conditioned or climate-controlled outdoor spaces where residents and visitors can stroll more comfortably during the summer, even during the daytime. This includes Oxygen Park at Education City, Souq Waqif’s Eastern Square, Centro at Rawdat Al Hamama, Crystal Walk at Gewan Island (Qatar’s longest climatised outdoor pedestrian walkway), 21 High St at Katara, Al Hazm Mall and West Walk in Al Waab.

Qatar Toy Festival highlights rise of ‘edutainment’ in summer tourism

The Qatar Toy Festival 2026 is showcasing the growing appeal of “edutainment”, drawing large numbers of families with immersive experiences that combine entertainment, creativity and hands-on learning. Running until July 31 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC), the month-long event also reflects Qatar’s efforts to expand its portfolio of year-round family attractions. Apart from colourful mascots, giant inflatables and live performances, the festival transforms the venue into an interactive playground where children meet their favourite characters while taking part in activities designed to develop creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills. **media[465979]** The festival also illustrates why large-scale indoor events have become an important feature of Qatar’s summer tourism calendar. Offering respite from the intense heat, they allow families to spend entire days enjoying themed attractions, live entertainment and interactive learning experiences under one roof during the school holidays. Across the exhibition halls, children take part in arts and crafts, construction-themed activities, obstacle courses and role-playing experiences that encourage creativity, communication and collaboration. **media[465978]** One of the festival’s most popular attractions recreates an emergency response scenario where children wear firefighter gear and work with instructors to extinguish a simulated building fire, introducing basic fire safety concepts while building confidence and teamwork.  Elsewhere, creative workshops invite youngsters to build, design and experiment, while themed play zones and interactive games keep them physically active and socially engaged.  Daily stage productions featuring storytelling, music, dance, and puppetry promote values such as friendship, kindness, co-operation, and perseverance, while character meet-and-greet sessions enhance the immersive atmosphere.  Watching her two children enjoy the activities, Doha resident Rochelle S said that the festival offers far more than entertainment.  “Children learn best when they’re enjoying themselves,” she said. “My son loved putting on the firefighter uniform and working with the other children.”  “He’s having fun, but I think he’s also learning teamwork, responsibility and basic safety,” she added. “It’s much better than simply sitting in front of a screen.”  She said that the festival provides families with a meaningful indoor option during the summer months.  “When it’s too hot outside, parents are always looking for worthwhile activities,” she pointed out. “Here we can spend several hours together while the children stay active, make friends and learn something new.” “That’s what makes it worthwhile.” The growing popularity of experience-based entertainment echoes a wider trend across the region. According to UN Tourism, the Middle East is the world’s fastest-growing tourism region, with Gulf countries investing in year-round attractions and family-friendly events to attract more visitors and diversify their tourism sectors. The educational value of play is supported by decades of child development research. Unicef describes play as fundamental to children’s cognitive, emotional, social and physical development, while developmental psychologists have found that guided play strengthens creativity, collaboration, communication and problem-solving skills.  This trend is becoming increasingly common across the Gulf, where indoor entertainment centres, interactive museums, and themed festivals continue to expand alongside tourism developments.
