India batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to represent the country after receiving his maiden international cap ahead of Saturday's Twenty20 International against England in Manchester, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record.The left-hander was presented his cap by teammate Tilak Varma before the start of the match, becoming ⁠India's 122nd men's T20 international and its youngest international cricketer at 15 years and 99 days.India captain Shreyas Iyer ⁠said Sooryavanshi had earned his place in the squad and backed the teenager to cope with the demands of international cricket."He completely deserves to be in the squad," Iyer said after winning the toss and electing to bat."He's someone who doesn't take pressure at all. Has an unflinching nature. He's very well aware of what's going to come in these coming matches."Sooryavanshi's debut eclipses one of Indian cricket's most enduring milestones. Tendulkar was 16 when he made his international debut in a test match against ⁠Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989 before going on to become one of the game's greatest players.Widely regarded as one of India's brightest prospects, Sooryavanshi earned his first senior call-up after a meteoric rise that began with a blistering 35-ball century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year.The teenager further enhanced his reputation in this year's IPL, finishing as the tournament's leading run-scorer with a strike rate of more than 237 and setting a competition record by hitting 72 sixes.His performances prompted growing calls for a place in the national side, though selectors resisted fast-tracking him and ⁠waited until he turned 15 in March before naming him in India's ⁠squads for the T20 ⁠series in Ireland and England.Sooryavanshi did not feature in either match against Ireland, remaining on the sidelines as India suffered a shock 2-0 series defeat.He was handed his opportunity against England in the second match of the five-game series after the opener at Old Trafford ended without a result, leaving the contest level at 0-0. Sooryavanshi, opening after India elected to bat first, hit Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue for a six each, but was stumped as he tried to charge Will Jacks down the ground, departing for 14 off 10 balls. England captain Harry Brook had said during the toss that the hosts were prepared for Sooryavanshi's threat."Done some homework on Vaibhav, we have some tactical decisions. Just a matter of executing now," Brook said.   

Ben Stokes posted one last farewell to international cricket on Friday, thanking fans and team-mates alike for a "mad 15 years".The 35-year-old former England captain retired in extraordinary fashion during the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, making his exit public on the fourth afternoon and promptly taking a wicket next ball.His last match as an England international capped a rollercoaster few weeks for the celebrated all-rounder that started with a morale-boosting win in the first Test at Lord's, only for Stokes to miss New Zealand's thumping win at the Oval for breaking a team midnight curfew at a London nightclub.He returned for one last stand in Nottingham after receiving an official conduct warning, with his departure a chaotic affair that ended with Stokes being promoted to open the batting as England suffered a mammoth 160-run defeat that gave New Zealand a deserved 2-1 series-win.His exit was a frantic affair, concluding with his promotion to open the batting in his final Test innings and a thumping 160-run defeat to New Zealand.Stokes, posting on X after a couple of days away with his family, thanked colleagues and supporters for their backing."It's been a mad 15 years," he wrote. "It's had everything thrown in there, from the highest highs to the lowest lows (on and off the field)."My time was up, and no one was going to be able to make that decision other than me. But in the meantime, I just want to say I love every single England fan and every single cricket fan who's supported me over the years."I love every single person I've walked out onto the field with representing England."Stokes, who intends to continue his career with county side Durham, added: "I could go on and on, but I hope you get the gist of how much I loved doing what I did for 15 years. I'm looking forward to being a fan and supporting the team, and the odd day in hospitality won't go amiss."Family, friends, teammates, fans...I love yas (sic) all." 

Ireland head coach Heinrich Malan will step down from his role, the country's cricket board said on Monday, shortly after the ‌Irish whitewashed India 2-0 in a ​Twenty20 series.The South African, ‌appointed in 2022, oversaw a period in ‌which ⁠Ireland qualified ‌for three consecutive T20 ‌World Cups, secured their first three Test match victories, ⁠and claimed their first-ever series win against India. Few gave Ireland a chance in the two-match series, but they humbled India twice in three days, spoiling Shreyas Iyer's debut series as India's 20-overs captain. It was India's first T20 ​series defeat since 2023.The 45-year-old's current contract extends into early 2027, but Cricket Ireland said in a statement, "he (Malan) believes ‌the timing is right ⁠in the ​cycle to step back following the just-concluded ​successful T20 series versus India."Malan will be replaced by Gary Wilson, who represented Ireland 292 times as a player between 2005 and 2020. Wilson joined Ireland's coaching setup as assistant coach in 2022, and becomes the first Irish-born head coach in over 30 years, following John Wills in the early 1990s."It has been ‌an absolute privilege to ‌work with these players, ⁠staff and the wider Irish cricket community," Malan ⁠said in a ⁠statement. "On the field, we can look back with great pride," he added, pointing to a T20 World Cup victory against England, Ireland's first-ever Test victory against Afghanistan and a first home Test win vs ​Zimbabwe among the highlights. Malan will work alongside Wilson over the coming month to ensure a smooth transition as Ireland prepare for a one-day international series against Afghanistan in August.Cricket Ireland also said that the transition will allow Wilson to use the upcoming ODI series as part of the preparations ‌towards the World ​Cup qualifiers early in 2027.

Rachin Ravindra admits it will take a collective effort from New Zealand's batsmen to replace Kane Williamson after his shock decision to retire from international cricket.Williamson brought the curtain down on his illustrious New Zealand career following the first Test defeat against England at Lord's, leaving New Zealand with a huge hole in their line-up when the second Test starts at the Oval on Wednesday.The 35-year-old is New Zealand's all-time leading run scorer across all formats with 19,346 runs, including 48 centuries and six double hundreds, in 378 appearances between 2010 and 2026.Williamson, who captained New Zealand on 206 occasions, scored 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06 in 110 Tests for the Black Caps.New Zealand all-rounder Ravindra conceded it will be impossible for one player to produce the wealth of runs amassed by Williamson.Instead Ravindra hopes New Zealand's overall batting depth can help fill the void."I don't necessarily see it as pressure. Whenever a great moves on there is always a hole in the team," Ravindra told reporters on Monday."But the strength and quality in our depth in our team is what we pride ourselves on. We have Henry Nicholls and obviously Will Young is here as batting back-up."We all share responsibility within our batting unit. It's not on one guy, it's pretty hard to fill in that gap and unfortunately I don't think many people can. So it will be a collective effort." NO COMPLAINTSRavindra said New Zealand's squad had no complaints about Williamson's decision to step away in the middle of the three-Test series."It's always tough when probably our greatest player calls time. We were all so supportive of his decision," he said."Kane is such an amazing player but more than that he's such an amazing bloke and has contributed so much to New Zealand."Personally I have looked up to him for a long time now. He's one of my biggest idols. I was very lucky to share the crease with him and enjoy some cool partnerships."Sharing the crease, he is in a zen zone. He's such a great mentor. Kane has done things in his own way and decided the time is right. He has been so giving to the group."New Zealand will look to bounce back after being thrashed by 115 runs at Lord's, where they found it difficult to cope with a treacherous pitch that made it hard for the batsmen."We take learnings from everything, whether it is success or failure. There were some balls keeping low and seaming around at Lord's. We do know it is a fresh start," Ravindra said."This will be a different surface, different conditions. We haven't played a Test at the Oval for a long time."

International Cricket Council chief executive Sanjog Gupta, insists the Women's T20 World Cup can "co-exist" with the football World Cup.England opened the cricket showpiece on home soil with an 87-run rout of Sri Lanka on Friday in front of 14,865 fans at Edgbaston.England's female football and rugby teams enjoyed public acclaim for their success at the European Championships and Rugby World Cup in recent years.But their cricketing counterparts are going for glory at a time when the sporting landscape is being dominated by the men's football World Cup in North America.Gupta says ticket sales for the three-week event reaching around 220,000 before a ball had been bowled, by far a tournament record, suggests the women's event can hold public interest."We genuinely see this event as a seminal moment for the sport," Gupta said. "I think the World Cups can co-exist. We've not seen any impact on ticket sales."If anything, the ticket sales have been stronger than ever, which is why we're at a point where we've sold more tickets than any previous edition of the Women's T20 World Cup."Our attendance numbers are tracking in the manner that we expected them to and the projections are for them to touch 300,000. If the weather holds up then we will have a fantastic tournament which will stand in its own right."We've seen tremendous acceleration in the growth of women's cricket to an extent where we now believe this event could potentially be one of the two biggest women's sporting events ever. It is not in any way being played in the shadow of the FIFA Men's World Cup." 

Michael Vaughan has backed Ben Stokes to retain the England captaincy despite being investigated for breaking the team's curfew. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced they were looking into Stokes' involvement in a nightclub incident on Monday morning following England's win in the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's. England team-mate Gus Atkinson and Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa were also involved. Media reports on Tuesday suggested Stokes may resign as Test skipper.The second Test against New Zealand at the Oval gets under way in a week's time.But former England captain Vaughan said Stokes had sufficient "credit in the bank" to avoid being sacked."Yes, Ben Stokes broke a curfew," Vaughan wrote in the Daily Telegraph."Yes, he made a mistake. But is that a sacking offence as England's Test captain? I do not think so. 'STOKES HAS A LOT OF CREDIT IN THE BANK'"Stokes has a lot of credit in the bank for all he has done for England as captain and all-rounder. There is no way that those making the big decisions at the England and Wales Cricket Board have the same credit in the bank."I do not see how you can tell Stokes he is not captain anymore just for going over the curfew by a couple of hours after a win."He added: "A short suspension would be fine, but this is not a big enough incident over which to lose the captaincy."It is the latest controversy concerning the England team after the tour of Australia where the side faced allegations of a drinking culture during a 4-1 Ashes series loss.A physical confrontation with Auvaa is understood to have led to a member of ECB security staff being struck.If Stokes is stripped of the captaincy, vice-captain Harry Brook - already the skipper of England's white-ball teams - could lead the hosts next week.Brook was fined and censured for late-night drinking and clashing with a nightclub bouncer before captaining England in a one-day international in Wellington in October -- an incident that led to the midnight curfew.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can have his parents travel with him on India's overseas tours, the cricket board told AFP on Sunday, a day after the 15-year-old batting sensation earned his first senior international call-up.Sooryavanshi was named in India's T20 squad for the tours to Ireland and England, and the Asian Games, after sweeping the batting honours in this year's Indian Premier League.The left-handed opener is currently in Sri Lanka with the India A squad for a tri-nation series."His father will be flying down to Sri Lanka today," said Devajit Saikia, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)."Also, if his parents want to go to England and Ireland with him, then we will make arrangements for their travel. They would be his best support system."India, the T20 world champions, are scheduled to play Ireland on June 26 and 28 in Belfast before a five-match England series beginning July 1.The Asian Games will be held in Japan in September and October.Sooryavanshi's selection follows a stunning IPL campaign for Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed 776 runs to finish as the tournament's leading run scorer.He struck one century and five half-centuries during the season.He picked the Orange Cap for the leading run-getter, the IPL most valuable player and emerging player prizes.He is line to become India's youngest player, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, the batting great who made his Test debut aged 16 years and 205 days in 1989."With his performances, he has almost forced us to pick him," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said."Like everyone else that has watched T20 cricket in India, we have got high hopes of him. I think he just has picked himself." 

India coach Gautam Gambhir told struggling Rishabh Pant on Friday to stick to his natural attacking game after removing him as vice-captain for the one-off Test against Afghanistan.KL Rahul will be Shubman Gill's deputy for the match starting on Saturday in New Chandigarh in place of Pant.Wicketkeeper-batsman Pant has scored 3,476 runs at an average of 42.91 in 49 Test matches, since his debut in England in August 2018.But the 28-year-old stepped down as captain of Lucknow Super Giants last week, the team having finished last in the IPL.The usually flamboyant Test match star scored just 312 runs from 14 innings in this year's IPL, at a strike rate of 138.05."The responsibility is to play for India - the rest, everything else, is a by-product," Gambhir told reporters on the eve of the Test."When you start playing for India, you don't think about being a vice-captain. You think about doing good for India."Gambhir said that no player is told to "play a completely different game than his natural game"."We will not tell him to 'curb your game', but in international cricket, it is very important to play the situation, to read the situation," Gambhir added.Gambhir's Test record as India coach is unimpressive with 10 defeats, seven wins and two draws in 19 matches.India suffered a 2-0 defeat to South Africa at home in November in their most recent Test outing.They were also whitewashed in 2024 by New Zealand on home soil. COACH TAKING POSITIVESGambhir is taking positives though from the 2-2 Test series draw in England last year, and performances against the West Indies.India won 2-0 at home in October."We all know how well this young team played in England, and then we won against West Indies," he said, admitting that the South Africa series still "hurts"."These are young boys," he said. "I think we have got enough talent to turn it around, and I am very hopeful that we will give ourselves the best chance to win the World Test Championship."The match is not part of the World Test Championship cycle, but is a key game for Afghanistan who played their debut five-day game in India in 2018.Afghanistan, led by Hashmatullah Shahidi, have since played 12 Tests and won four."We're fully focused on this Test match," coach Richard Pybus said."Our focus is on, cliche as it sounds, is really our control - it's what we need to do."
