His Excellency Chairperson of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to UNESCO Dr. Nasser bin Hamad Al Hinzab said that the passing of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, may Allah have mercy on him, represents a loss for the international community, given his enduring contributions to advancing development and expanding educational opportunities worldwide.This came at the beginning of his address during the opening of the high-level ministerial dialogue titled 'The global compact for sciences - sustainable development: Commitments for 2030 and beyond', held at UNESCO in Paris, France, in the presence of HE Director-General of UNESCO Dr. Khaled El-Enany, and a number of ministers and senior officials.The Chairperson of the UNESCO Executive Board called upon the participants to observe a minute of silence in mourning for HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, may Allah have mercy on him, in recognition of his humanitarian legacy and contributions to the fields of education and development.He said that HH the Father Amir believed that education is the cornerstone of human dignity, sustainable development, and lasting peace. His Highness, may Allah have mercy on him, made education, science, culture, and international cooperation key tools for empowering individuals, expanding opportunities, and building more inclusive societies capable of facing challenges, he noted.HE Dr. Nasser Al Hinzab added that His Highness' support for initiatives aimed at expanding access to quality education, promoting scientific progress, and investing in human capital contributed to establishing a global legacy that continues to inspire the international community and strengthens efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.His Excellency also praised the visionary leadership of HH the Father Amir, his unwavering belief in the values of intellectual pluralism, and the pivotal role of independent media, stemming from his conviction that open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas are fundamental to progress and the consolidation of peace.The Chairperson of UNESCO's Executive Board affirmed that the legacy of HH the Father Amir aligns closely with the organization's mission of building peace in the minds of people through education, science, culture, and international cooperation, noting that His Highness' contributions in these fields will remain etched in the memory of the international community.The conference, which brought together a large number of ministers from around the world, aimed to assess progress in implementing the goals of the International Decade for Sustainable Development, review innovative scientific solutions that contribute to addressing global challenges, and strengthen the international partnerships necessary to expand the role of science in achieving sustainable development.Held under the theme 'Science in action: Charting a sustainable and equitable future for all', the conference highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research, the principles of open science, and promoting the integration of science, policymaking, and society to contribute to building a more inclusive and equitable future, and to support efforts to shape the post-2030 global development agenda. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received a phone call on Thursday from Minister of Defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who expressed his deepest condolences on the passing of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, praying to Almighty Allah to grant him His boundless mercy and admit him into His vast Paradise.For his part, HH the Amir expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the Saudi Minister of Defense for his heartfelt condolences and sympathy.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received a phone call on Thursday from King Philippe of the Kingdom of Belgium, during which he expressed his sincere condolences on the passing of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani.For his part, HH the Amir expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the King of Belgium for his kind sentiments and heartfelt condolences. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received a phone call on Thursday fromGrand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg, who offered condolences on the passing of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. For his part, HH the Amir expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the Duke of Luxembourg for his condolences and kind sentiments.

The passing of HH the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani is a profound loss not only for Qatar but for the Arab and Islamic worlds. His vision, courage and unwavering commitment to his people transformed Qatar into a nation whose influence extends far beyond its geographical size. I extend my deepest condolences to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the Royal Family and the people of Qatar.  HH the late Father Amir was a noble leader who dedicated his life to serving his country, advancing humanity and ensuring that Qatar would leave a lasting mark on the world. When I reflect on HH Sheikh Hamad’s legacy, I think first of a leader who genuinely cared for his people.He cared about the Islamic world, believed in humanity and understood the importance of how Qatar was perceived internationally.  Through his leadership, Qatar evolved from what many once regarded as a small Gulf state into a respected global player in diplomacy, economics and international affairs.  One of his greatest achievements was transforming the global energy landscape. While much attention is often given to the North Field, the true breakthrough came from HH Sheikh Hamad’s vision to establish Qatar as a leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This fundamentally changed the global energy market and positioned Qatar among the world’s strongest economies.  Yet, what made this achievement truly remarkable was how that prosperity was invested. The wealth generated through LNG was channelled into education, research and human development rather than simply infrastructure.  The establishment and growth of Qatar Foundation, under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, created opportunities for generations of Qataris and residents alike. International universities, research institutions and centres of innovation became pillars of a knowledge-based society that continues to shape the country’s future.  HH the late Father Amir also understood that a nation’s identity cannot be measured solely by its skyline. He believed that culture is the soul of a country. Through sustained investment in museums, heritage and the arts, Qatar established itself as a regional and international cultural destination. These achievements reflected his conviction that great nations preserve and celebrate their identity while embracing the future.  Equally significant was his vision of Qatar as a platform for dialogue, peace and mediation.Under his leadership, Doha became synonymous with diplomacy, bringing together leaders from across the world to address complex global challenges. Initiatives such as the Doha Forum demonstrated Qatar’s growing role as a trusted venue where dialogue could prevail over conflict.  His humanitarian commitment was equally evident. HH Sheikh Hamad consistently stood with the Palestinian people and supported reconstruction efforts in Gaza and Lebanon, believing that leadership carried responsibilities beyond national borders. His compassion and commitment tohelping communities affected by conflict earned Qatar respect throughout the region.  His vision also extended to global diplomacy. By facilitating dialogue among Afghan parties, Qatar laid the foundations for peace negotiations that would later gain international recognition. These efforts reflected HH Sheikh Hamad’s belief that even the most difficult conflicts could be addressed through engagement and dialogue.  Sport was another pillar of his long-term vision. He recognised that sport is a form of public diplomacy capable of changing perceptions and bringing people together. The successful journey towards hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 was never solely about Qatar; it represented a defining moment for the entire Arab world. It demonstrated that the region could successfully deliver an event of global significance while showcasing its culture, hospitality and capabilities.  As someone who has worked in the media sector, I also regard the establishment of Al Jazeera as one of HH Sheikh Hamad’s most transformative achievements. It reshaped the Arab media landscape by introducing a new model of journalism that expanded public discourse and gave voice to perspectives that had long been absent from regional media. Its influence fundamentally changed how news was produced and consumed across the Middle East.  Throughout his life, HH Sheikh Hamad sought to reshape the global narrative surrounding Arabsand Muslims. At a time when the region was often associated with conflict and instability, he championed dialogue, understanding and co-operation. He believed that Qatar could serve as a bridge between cultures and demonstrate the values of peace, progress and mutual respect.  His legacy cannot be measured only by economic growth or international recognition. It lives on in Qatar’s educational institutions, its cultural achievements, its diplomatic influence and the confidence with which the nation continues to look towards the future.  HH the late Father Amir was, above all, a leader of the people. His vision transformed Qatar, inspired the region and earned admiration around the world. His contributions will continue to guide future generations, and his legacy will never be forgotten.

The Indian community, led by Ambassador Vipul, paid rich tributes Wednesday to late His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and offered condolences to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the royal family, and the people of Qatar on the passing of HH the late Father Amir.A large number of Indian community members, community leaders, and diplomats from the Indian embassy took part in the community condolence meeting held at the Ashoka Hall of the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC).The event, organised by the apex bodies under the aegis of the Indian embassy in Doha, saw the hall and nearby areas overflowing with community members, a true reflection of the love and respect for the departed leader.The meeting started with the observance of silence for a minute to pay respect to HH the late Father Amir, and a mourning note was read out by ICC general secretary Abraham Joseph, who highlighted that HH Sheikh Hamad leaves behind a legacy that helped shape modern Qatar and transform its lives with his kindness, generosity, wisdom and compassion.A short video highlighting HH the late Father Amir's visits to India and his interactions with various Indian leaders was screened on the occasion.Ambassador Vipul, in his address, highlighted that India and the Indian community in Qatar will always cherish the love and support given by HH Sheikh Hamad.“I have heard many stories of his love and compassion for the common people, particularly from India, as also his connect with India that we could see during his multiple visits to India,” the envoy said.“I had the good fortune and privilege of attending the meetings of our leaders with HH the Father Amir over the last several years, and what was remarkable in all these meetings was his love for India,” Vipul said. “He was always very gracious and held the Indian community in very high esteem, always had good words to say about India and the Indian community in Qatar.”The envoy noted that India observed one day of national mourning, declared in honour of HH the late Father Amir, during which the national flag was flown at half-mast across the country on all official buildings and at embassies abroad, and there was no official entertainment on that day.Vipul also noted that Indian Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiran Rijiju had come personally to Qatar to offer condolences to HH the Amir.Presidents of all four apex bodies under the embassy also spoke on the occasion.ICC president A P Manikantan, Indian Community Benevolent Forum president Shanavas Bava, Indian Sports Centre president E P Abdulrahman, and Indian Business and Professional Council president Taha Muhammed shared their thoughts on HH the late Father Amir and his extraordinary vision to take the country to great development and prosperity.They also recalled his affection and love for India and how the Indian community under his reign grew and contributed to the country's development.Several other prominent leaders and community members shared their thoughts, highlighting that the bond between Qatar and India remains very strong and cordial, and that HH the late Father Amir was instrumental in developing this cordial relationship between the two countries.
